A special Lion and a special person. Recorded ahead of his 50th birthday, in his own words Doddie relives his incredible journey. We will all miss him greatly. #RIPDoddie
I am English so obviously I didnt want Scotland to win anything. But I had the pleasure to meet the great man in London where he came to support an animal charity. Lovely, endearing, softly spoken gentleman. Scotland have been my second team ever since. God bless this prince amongst men.
Big man and an even bigger character, why does God take the best 1st, he must a have a special job for them somewhere else, heartfelt condolences to his family, there will never be another Doddie Weir.
I am an exile from Langholm. I am sure that Langholm rugby club members as with all the Border towns will be saddened at the passing of this giant gentle Melrosian who gave his all for Melrose, Scotland, The lions , his beloved wife and family and finally in fighting this dreadful disease. A great man in the true sense of the world.
Working in bioresearch, I'm proud to confirm that Doddie's charity raises a lot of money, awareness and inspiration for the scientists who continue to look into treatment and a cure for MND. If you want to contribute, it's the 'My Name'5 Doddie' foundation.
I have a tear in my eye as I'm reading the comments. I met Doddie when he visited my school when he played for Newcastle Falcons. Still have the picture of me with Doddie.
RIP Doddie Weir from MND aged 52. Such a horrible disease. Mistaken identity always makes me laugh. An all time classic. Condolences to his family and friends xxx.
I met Doddie a few times when I was the Captain of the aircraft that flew the Lions down to South Africa in 97 and flew him home again with his injured knee. What a lovely man, big in all respects and a tragic loss to his family and the rugby world.
As an Englishman and ex player and still big fan, it’ll never hurt to say Scotsman Doddie was not only a great player to watch, a big personality but one hell of a man, what a role model, very very brave right to the end. RIP big fellah!
I had the pleasure of meeting him after the Scotland Australia game in 2017 where he was the speaker in the thistle suite Such a funny genuine man Had a chat with everyone in there and never left anyone out A true legend of Scottish rugby who will be sorely missed 🏴❤️
I am a Scot (also a former farmer), living in South Africa since 1996 (good timing, some may say!). Doddle was always a special, magical player. His approach to MND was nothing short of inspirational (an overused term, but apt in this description). He was a remarkable force of nature, a gentle giant (unless you happened to be wearing an opposition jersey on the field of play!). He will be missed by many people all around the world, but many people have benefitted from a life well lived.
"A man walks into a pub and sees a giraffe at the bar"this happened to me at Bellingham golf course. Gentleman, hero and always a legendary inspiration in everything.
I was out today with guys I last played Rugby with 20 years ago. It was just like we'd just come off the pitch in terms of banter. We all die and some, like Doddie, die too young. In the hearts of his mates when they're having a beer and watching the Rugby he'll still be there. Every funny outrageous thing he ever did will be retold. The dead don't miss the living. The living miss the dead. Such a nice bloke.
Still have my Living with Lions VHS copy and Doddie was definitely one of the fun loving characters of that tour cruelly cut short from that one petulant South African stamp. Rest easy big man on a life well lived
i was heartbroken when i found out he passed. met the man several times a true gentleman, always had time for the fans in fact he had time for anyone and everyone, a true loss to both rugby and his millions of fans around the world, rest easy big man your tour is finally over 😪🏉
I for one will never forget getting up in those wee hours in Australia to watch a most emotional tribute given on Remembrance Sunday, a day of all days, All Blacks v Scotland, and to see that sporting tribute by both teams and the crowd applauding, highlighting this dreadful disease. Rugby was the winner that day. RIP G W Weir
RIP doddie . Never met the man but he seemed like such a decent guy. All young rugby players and young men should look up to the likes of doddie as a role model on how the live a good life.
I'm from Melrose, Doddie was a local hero. We've had a fair few great rugby men from round here but he stands out. Gets a death sentence and makes his last 5 years about helping others with his condition. Hit me in the stomach hearing he'd died especially after seeing him on the pitch at Murrayfield only a couple weeks ago. Rest well King.
What an incredible man.. He kept so positive through an horrific illness and is an inspiration in how to approach life with a smile and a zest for life. RIP Doddie.
Great tribute to a wonderful bloke; he’s the epitome of what this great game offers to players, coaching staff and fans in many many parts of the world!
I know he was Rugby Union but from all the Rugby League fraternity Doddie was so well respected as a player and a man. We send our love to his family n friends. Great great fella. RiP from Rugby League.🏉🏉🏉
What an absolute legend Doddie was. I have such fond memories of watching Scotland play through the 1990s (even though we didn't win that often), he was such an important part of the team which earned him his deserved place with the Lions in 1997. Thank you for the memories and rest easy big chap.
What a bloke, the stuff him and rob are doing to raise awareness is going to save so many lives in the future. Lots of love to the family. Absolute gentle giant, will be sorely missed ❤️
DODDIE ALWAYS APPEARED TO BE TRUE GENTLEMAN.....PRINCESS ANN TOOK AVERY GOOD INTEREST IN HIM AND YOU COULD SEE A LOVELY RELATION SHIP THEY HAD......BIG SMILES ALL ROUND.....HE NEVER EVER FELT SORRY FOR HIMSELF......DODDIE WAS A LEGEND AND SCOTLAND WILL MISS HIM LIKE WISE WITH THE ENGLISH IN FACT THE WHOLE RUGBY FRATERNITY WILL MISS HIM......WE WILL REMEMBER HIM
A fantastic player with great wit. Fought to the end which was always his way and over the last few years didn't pity himself but focused all his energy on creating awareness for MND. Rest In Peace Big Man with respect from Limerick.

I’ve still got my DVD of the same. I still think SA ‘97 was the best Lions tour yet. It’s all way too serious these days.
