We picked up a Boatswains whistle some 40 years ago at a shop in Newport Beach. It got passed around at a huge SoCal family party and my grandmother was ONLY one that knew how to make it work and all the “calls” too. Turns out she had 3 brothers in the Navy for WW2. The 2 that survived knew it well and taught her. Kinda a forgotten “communication” yet still used from my understanding.
It’s called a Boatswains Call (or Boatswains Pipe, they can be used interchangeably) and they’re still used on Naval ships and Coast Guard cutters for informing crew members of evolutions and rendering honors to higher ranks. The Commandant of the CG visited our 87’ CG cutter a while back and my BM2 rendered honors to him with a Boatswains Call.
Also, I thank your grandmothers 3 brothers for their volunteering, sacrifices, and service for our country. Godspeed to them as well as the rest of your family.
@@benben7448 thank you and I take that to heart. Thank you for continuing the honor of service as well.
@@flipnotrab Of course, I do it for you guys. Nothing makes me happier than making sure people get back to their families safe and sound from the waters
In the Royal Navy, we still use it for four main calls: The Still, to bring everyone to attention for a specific event i.e. Colours or Passing Honours. The Carry On, to fall everyone out of attention. The Side, to salute Officers of Command and Call the Hands, to wake everyone up. I know the USN and USCG use them more than we do but I still believe most modern navies still use them.
That damn thing was never meant to be blasted over the 1MC. Especially that close to the mic. Twenty years of that and still I clicked. What's wrong with me?
Pipe down! 😆
#Memories #GoodTimes
Watch rotation.
me: trying to recover from 3 section watch
boatswain: HEY ITS NOON HAHA
🤣🤣🤣
Port and starboard watch sections for a 9 month deployment. Hated being last on Bright Bridge.
No sleep for the wicked
He was really trying to reach that minute for chow with the pause
My Dad had one of those whistles in the house, my brother and I would always play with it when we were young.
I been keeping one in my safe for eight years and im finally finding out it what it is. I thought it was a vintage meth pipe so I never used it until now 🤣
"Captin...the teapot is ready..."
Most hated man on ship... at least by Marines.
My Brother Jeffery Allan Dyson was a 1st. Class Boatswains Mate 02/22/22
Chow time! Fuck yeah
This used to annoy the shit out of me at sea!! 😫🤦🏽♂️
Damn ive heard the Boatswain call on DDG-69
Do all that and still some ships will announce what it means.. smh. Learn your calls, shipmates.
Lol. I was a fellow BM2 with this guy. How did you get this video???
After looking at your other videos, I feel like you may have been the strike group Chaplin. You were all over the place around that time.
I done took it myself.
I was visiting the ship as a Navy artist.
Bryan nope, not the Chaps- but back in my Marine Reserve days, I spent a couple years as a Chaplain’s Assistant because he didn’t have a Navy RP. #GoodTimes
@@sketchbook1 Nice! Well if you flew in on a helo, I was probably the LSE on the flight deck.
Bryan I certainly did. You guys treated me like a king, too, btw. The XO put me up for a night in the CO’s Sea Cabin!
I’ll be honest, I have little experience with these apart from family, being in cadets, and a interest in the navy
But…. Idk that dosnt sound right to me 😭 i know Americans do things different but I kinda feel this is one thing every country could all sit around and agree on using universally 😅 so idk just feels like it’s not right but again, I don’t actually know 🤷♂️
Thats my sister ship. Mine was DDG67.
Ahhhh boatswain mate
Oof, I wouldn't want that blasting in my ears.
He’s probably not endearing himself with everyone else on board.
That pause
If i remember correctly when we were at sea only the Bosun could make the calls. Am i wrong?
No you're not wrong.
Yep
