Apologies for the misspell, I have rectified the title of the video. Thank you for joining me as we delve into a group I obviously need to learn more about:)
ELO can be reaaallly poppy - as on Telephone Line - or really rock and/or veer towards proggy influences. For me, their best work is their only "concept" album, Eldorado, which they recorded in the middle of their no-fault run(1973-76). Face The Music (1975) has some pretty rockin' (Poker), proggin' (Fire on High) and poppin' (Strange Magic) tracks.
For a display of ELO's orchestral prowess, I suggest the "El Dorado Overture" that leads right into "Can't get it out of my head"...here's a fanpost that includes some incredible images to go with this awesome song! ua-cam.com/video/3bHzu-PZ4TE/v-deo.html
When this song came out... Telephones in houses were on the wall or on a little desk in the hallway, next to the telephone book, and the yellow pages,if you wanted to call someone, you had to DIAL their number, wait for the ring tone unti they answerd, ,It was called Conversation back then, no text l, or messaging of any kind, ha.love your vid, your so young ha.
I love it that you had awareness that no one’s answering. Other reactors have been baffled, saying “Why doesn’t he just leave a voice mail?” This is DECADES before VM was a thing. LOL
I'll just ignore the electronic part. Jeff Lynne is a genius, Beatles connection, blah blah blah... Many catchy great songs from ELO. Mr Blue Sky, Livin' Thing, Turn to Stone, Evil Woman, Strange Magic, Last Train to London, Do Ya, Don't Bring Me Down... the list goes on.
@@i_kill_for_zardoz The funny thing is back in the 70's when this band was big we use to joking call them the electronic LED orchestra because electric light sounded too old-fashioned.

ELECTRIC Light Orchestra was an anomaly even in a time of near-universal diversity. ELO started out, not as a band, but as a name for an experimental album by three members of British pop-rock band The Move. When The Move broke up, singer-guitarist Jeff Lynne decided to continue recording under the name ELO. ELO was unusual in that the band included two cellists and a violinist, which added to the lush soundscape of Lynne's songs. ELO managed fuse prog-rock elements with mainstream pop. This was a pop band that 'serious' listeners also loved. Most of the purely pop fans had no idea that they'd previously made a concept album called Eldorado, which described itself as a Symphony. Lynne is a genius of pop, and the records he makes are distinctly his. After the original ELO broke up, he turned that genius hand to producing other people's records. He produced George Harrison's most successful album, Cloud Nine, as well as Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever and Into The Great Wide Open. Lynne, Harrison and Petty were also in a short-lived supergroup called The Traveling Wilburys, along with Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. And now for something completely different, I very highly recommend as an ELP reaction, the live version of "Tarkus" from their album (takes a deep breath) 'Welcome back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Ladies And Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake And Palmer!' I'd particularly like to point out the last section of the piece, "Aquatarkus". You won't believe just how much more analog synthesizers were capable of than their digital replacements. "Aquatarkus" is a tour-de-force.
I am impressed. This song is one of their greatest songs, but gets forgotten when people make a list of their favorite ELO songs, and YOU got to hear this one first. Any of the rest possibly might let you down, even the one song that sill gets some good airplay today. This I call their masterpiece.
ELO were a highly efficient and skilled hit machine in the 70's. A talented classic rock band. They combined rock 'n' roll, blues, and pop with just a little bit of proggy electronics here and there. They're still going in some form and play huge concerts in the UK, most years. If you liked this, check out Livin Thing, Mr Blue Sky, Turn to stone, All over the World, Evil Woman & The Diary of Horace Wimp.
I *adore* your description: “highly efficient and skilled.” I loved ELO for about 5 minutes when they were a thing. I would play their version of Roll Over Beethoven constantly. Then I heard the Beatles’ version. Immediately ELO dropped down from “brilliant” to “efficient and skilled.” A little over-produced. Or a lot. To my teenaged ears, the Beatles sounded raw and came to life during ROB. When I heard Chuck Berry’s version, omigosh. Pure electricity.
If you haven't already figured it out ELO was a British band.Though they had big hits prior to this . This song really got the Americas to take notice of them. Jeff Lynn wrote and sang every hit they ever had, and is still writing and performing to this day. In the 90's Jeff teamed up with a few other legendary artists , and formed a remarkable band called "The Traveling Wilbury's" Though they were a short lived group . they produced a few real huge hits. The members were a who's who of music history including : Roy Orbison, George Harrison of the Beatles, The legendary Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and of course Jeff Lynn. Jeff's latest song was released a few years ago , it is a fantastic song called "When I was a Boy" recounting how he fell in love with music as a child. The most astounding thing about this song is it's video. The video was directed by Famous Hollywood director Warren Fu , who also directed Star Trek 2009, co directed Star Wars the Phantom menace , and Terminator Salvation. You really need to see that astounding video.
He is the most heavily Beatles influenced man to record music. You can hear it in every song he has ever recorded. Even he admits to that. But he mastered it so well that he has produced Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Along with Tom Petty and many more.
excellent. jeff lynnn....another genius. are all their songs like this ? well...they all have the strings (they were part of the band), many have gorgeous melody, harmony...great hooks....but they can also rock when they needed too. they had a lot of hits, but i will recommend some other non-hits, Fire on High, Waterfall, Shangri-la, Mission, Poker....

The violins are part of the "Orchestra" in the group name. Jeff Lynne started experimenting with strings in a rock song, liked what he got, and continued using them.
Interesting to hear this was their biggest hit in the USA. They're a great band with many hit singles and Jeff Lynne is a genius, singer and multi instrumentalist and of course still going strong. Check out the latest ELO album "From Out of Nowhere".
I saw ELO live in 1975, before they became "too commercial". This song, released in 1976, was part of their becoming more radio friendly. When I saw them, they no longer had Roy Wood, co-founder of the group, but had not yet become oversaturated in radio playlists. Go for their earlier stuff (On The Third Day is a good album). Peace.

Daniel - Two wildly different songs, each with a surprising lyrical twist. "Message in a bottle" by the police, and "Jessie" by Carly Simon. Message in a Bottle has the most incredible drumming. The drummer punctuates the music, leading then lagging the expected beat in the listener-s brain. Best hi-hat work around. Jessie is just a love of a song. How can you resist a lyric, "Let's drink to the heart that has a Will of its own".
Love ELO early works. They became too poppy by the end of the seventies. Recommend 10538 Overture. ELO at the beginning when they were very interesting. This song has a future dystopian feel. The character sung about is “10538”. Kinda like George Lucas’ Thx1138 film or Fahrenheit 451.
I used to dislike artists becoming “too poppy”, but I have learned to love pop. There are so many great pop songs. The pop genre has as much richness and depth as any other. And poppy ELO is amazing :)

So John Lennon called ELO “Sons of Beatles”. Jeff Lynne is a genius writer, singer, musician, producer. Beyond ELO he produced for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and masterfully produced Free as a Bird by The Beatles. One of the all time greats
In general I like ELO. Their song "Rock is King" was the entrance music for a tag-team wrestling duo called The Rock and Roll Express back in the 80s/90s. The issue I have is Geoff Lynne's tendency to overproduce, and making his work on George Harrison's albums sound like ELO.
@@navinspurpose7609 I was a wrestler (as you can see by my photo). Worked on a card w/Robert Gibson back in 1990. And they still work better than most of today's talent.
So 1990 pre WCW....was it with the NWA or on an independent show? Who did you work that night? I have met a lot of great men and woman(and some not so great) from the pro wrestling industry.

Do a deep dive . You will not be disappointed. Turned to Stone..us great...
A tag team that by the way is still going strong almost 40 years later!
Dude just watched one of your matches....you sold your A$$ of out there. Great stuff, cool that you have this footage. Only thing camera pans to the left during superplex finisher.
@@navinspurpose7609 Thanks! Which one did you watch, the broadcast of that match or my dad's home movie? The broadcast shows the superplex.
Yeah back in the day you couldn't leave a message. They wouldn't even know you called.lol.
