It’s amazing how well ELO’s one-of-kind style has aged, and how younger generations of listeners are discovering it. In a world that has heavily emphasized rhythm-based music for many years, creative, melody-based music is surprisingly refreshing. And yes, Jeff Lynne is a genius whose work goes well beyond ELO.
Discovered the song when I was about 23, living alone (and lonely) in the corporate apartment for a plastic sheet factory two time zones away from my newly ex-girlfriend, in a tiny industrial town in WA state. I had just moved out west and knew almost nobody. Heartbroken over the breakup at the time, so the song etched itself deeply into my heart and mind. Super relevant. Even years later it would hit me like a punch in the gut when it came on the radio. I'm over it now and I cover it on guitar. But good writing, boy.
"Telephone Line" is from the day when there were no cell phones. In fact, I think it was even before answering machines. All we had was land lines. Usually, if nobody answered, you were just SOL. When he says, "can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer", he was probably talking to the long distance operator who put the call through for him.
Answering machines existed, but were not common in private homes yet. But even the long distance operator was more of a callback to even earlier times. Few people ever used operator-assisted dialing even back then except for things like collect (reversed-charge) calling... at least in the US.
Turned to stone ,Strange Magic, Evil Woman, Can't get it out of my head, Mr. Blue Sky, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Livin Thing, Showdown, Last Train to London, Do Ya, Don't bring me down, Hold on Tight and All over the world. All hits here, not a bad song in this list just take your pick. 😎✌
when i re...visit ed the song after 40 years....the song simply floored me ..i had learned piano and guitar...but the song became so stunning...the blonde that sings with him..is so beautiful

And NF? Both have very large Fan groups, esp. Tom's " THe Hangover gang" or H.O.G . Be sure to #. BTW Tom removes all cursing from his, is 100% independent with a great, inspiring Overcoming story. Most start with his Break out song " Dear Rappers" but he has so many different sounds , lots to choose from. All are not politically charged, but some are. " Deat Slim" is an Homage song to Eminem. Castles is very thoughtful uplifting. A lot will talk about his Alcoholic & DEpression recovery. Also Chris Stapleton " Tennesee Whiskey" is huge draw and is not really country-more soulful.
