Ren is one of the most talented artists in the game these days. The poetry and storytelling he creates, reminds me of the Troubadours of the 70's. The Tale of Jenny and Screech is haunting and beautiful at the same time.
Violets Tale was written in 2019 at 29. He says the worst year of his life was 2015 (25). He still did not have a correct diagnosis after 6 years of illness. He made a wonderful video with his former girlfriend Bibi called Crutch. I highly recommend this jewel.
@@TouchyReactions I would also highly recommend PENITENCE which was written shortly after they split. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful and poetic with all of Ren lyrically genius.
In Welsh the term is Bardd which is anglicised to Bard and so this kind of music that Ren does comes under the genre of Bardcore. Bardism originated with the Welsh. To give a bit of context to Jenny once you find out the plot twist at the end, Jenny is 14 years old, she is the twin of Screech who we are told was 14 years old. This means Jenny was walking the streets late at night wearing high heels and she had walked those streets a thousand times before and so we can infer that Jenny must have been a “lady of the night” to put it in a non explicit way and that would suggest that her upbringing was not good either and especially as a 14 years old doing it, so they were both failed by the system and both ended up in a dodgy part of town and both doing bad things to get money to survive and it ended in tragedy. She wanted to escape that life and ultimately she got her wish just not the kind of escape she was probably hoping for.
Thank you, I enjoyed your reaction. Ren has also been compared with medieval troubadours (Southern French) and bards (Welsh), in fact he calls this style "Bardcore". Ren's well of inspiration goes deep. He transcends genres. May I request "Penitence"? No one else will ask for it but it's a hidden gem.
@@TouchyReactions Second that - Penitence is an absolutely beautiful song with possibly the best vocal intro I've ever heard. I'm not sure Ren coined the term 'bardcore', I think it was a comment on a video that took hold and he's happily embraced it. Either way it's a brilliant name for his unique genre!
Also, Ren is not technically a rapper. He's a musician who has always incorporated some rap into his music, but he decided to make a hip hop album for fun (Sick Boi), which went on to become #1 on the UK charts. He's said his next album is getting back to more singing and guitar. The boy can (and does) do it all!
He is a rapper though. He is a rapper who also does other genres. A lot of people don't even know that ED Sheeran is also a rapper, in fact ED is a rapper who can play and sing... just like Ren. Not a singer who can rap.
By the way, a cool thing is before rewinding, hes doing violets experiences backwards, so at 12:48 hes portraying violet arriving in the afterlife, hence why it sounds ethereal/spooky. And right before that portrays the moment violet reviews her entire life. And the playing before that, the Renaissance-like theme i believe is shes frolicking through heaven.
Ren shines the light on dark sides of society.. but its done in such a creative way and done so well that you can't look away.. this reflects the cycles of abuse.. Violet ended up with an abusive man like her father.. Jenny responded to a threat the same as the mother she never even knew.. froze and went silent.. Screech went from a threat to violence in response to her silence just like his father did with violet.. it depicts the abuse cycle and as you said many other important messages. I recently stumbled on a song that is an alternative to this on a page called Renegade. It is performed by AI.. but sounds really good and the lyrics are smart.. its a what if type song and when Screech gets out the blade instead of repeating the cycle.. Jenny steps forward and speaks to James.. and it breaks the cycle for them both.. its actually really nice. Worth checking out.
Jenny was a 14 year old girl in the streets late at night. She was likely a prostitute. And Screech’s buddy wasn’t home while Screech’s gf was busy late at night is a sign they were together. Also Jenny basically froze and went quiet like their mother Violet while Screech exploded into violence like their father Stevie. It’s a sad tale of generational trauma and nature vs nurture.
@@melissaisloud7404 sounds all too convenient. Tragic for sure but tragically convenient. Gutted with the whole both of them on a hospital bed together in the end too. No winners no right or wrongs just tragic gritty reality (in a song lol)

My vote for next Ren reaction, since you're a married couple, would be for Crutch, a collab with a now-ex-girlfriend about the strains of being the supportive one when your partner is struggling. Also, I recently rewatched that animated Robin Hood, a fave when I was a kid, with my 5-year-old daughter, and that rooster minstrel was much more depressing than I remembered. She kept telling me "Daddy, the rooster sounds sad."
Ren is certainly compelling. If you are thinking that Ren just has messages in his works, you are just scratching the surface and seriously underselling him. Ren does not impart messages; he encourages listeners to think for themselves and to openly discuss topics they would otherwise not think of or speak of.
