God, Somewhere City is such a good fucking album. This list makes me wanna give The Brave Little Abacus another shot, cause last time I listened to them, I wasn't super into experimental/whinier stuff, but maybe it'll click more for me this time around.

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness).
Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music.
Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta.
Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral

NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

"midwest emo" is a misnomer. Although many bands are from the midwest (American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Braid, the Promise Ring, etc) there are many many more that were from all over the US (and eventually other countries). Sunny Day Real Estate, one of if not the first midwest emo bands, were from Seattle

I never heard of the term "emo" until the mid 2000s. I would've just called this punk or metal.
Whatever, it's hard and screechy, that's enough.
"Emo" is a shortening of "emocore" which was in itself a shortening of "emotive hardcore punk" which the scene has been called since the 80's when it started in the Washington DC post hardcore scene.
@@elk3407 - it was mostly underground, though. I was a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s; I just listened to regular radio and MTV when it mattered, and the music was great! Livin' on a Prayer and It Was a Good Day are legendary! I never even heard of this "underground scene", until much later. Can't win with anybody.
