James, I’m 70 years of age, and remember when this was released. I am still captivated by this. I’ve been playing since ‘75, can’t read a stitch of music except for chord diagrams but managed to figure things out . I recently had surgery on my fretting hand, and recovery has been slow and taxing. So I took the leap and decided that the best therapy for my hand was Stills, and Suite; and then I found this amongst your tutorials. Wow is all that I can say. Mysteries revealed. THANK YOU. My faith has been restored.
From someone that has never played guitar, (or a complete song on any instrument) I can tell you the pace of your lesson/video is absolutely perfect. I literally tuned my guitar, paused it long enough to see the fingerings and frets and within an half an hour, and one time through this video, I could play, and sing, this entire song. (minus the solo stuff) The only thing left is learning/practicing strumming patterns and noise dampening. It makes me really happy. One of my all time favorite songs. SIDE NOTE/Story : I bought a cheaper Martin HPL guitar because I wanted to learn a bit. When I came to this song and tuned down I got a little frustrated of having to change tunings back and forth. Obviously, I needed another acoustic so, I bought a Martin GPC-16E. Anyway, long story short, this video cost me $1600.
For those complaining he's going to fast, you have options. You can replay as much as you like! Also, you can slow down the video. Hit the gear looking icon ⚙ then change playback speed.
Good man you're absolutely right, or they could do what we had to do in the days before UA-cam, keep moving the needle back on the album or rewind the tape 😜 ha! Tapes, do you remember them 😂😂
James, Wow! I’m 75 years old and have been playing guitar since my college days in the 60’s. This has always been at the top of my list of favorite tunes. My friends and I would sing along to “Suite” although I never learned it on guitar. I knew it was a strange tuning and was not really equipped to tackle it. I’m rediscovering guitar now (mostly I play piano) but your excellent teaching of the song has inspired me to try and give it a go. Thank you so much and I’ll definitely check out the other videos on your site. Fantastic work!
I LOVE the pace of your lessons. Thanks for not going through it, up down up down up like I have never heard the song or picked up a guitar. There are hundreds of those pace lessons and I roll my eyes every time. Hang tough man, the players appreciate your top notch stuff. Especially after we browsed through a few lessons where they get it wrong...
@@jamesjames9275 and so you shouldn’t. Subtle distinction in the presentation of Suite Judy Blue Eyes perhaps but a compliment to you. I jumped from there to “Live the One You’re With” and “4 & 20”. Great stuff!!
First off, thank you! This channel is a fantastic resource!! Your instructions are made to dial in a "fluent" player directly into the song and geared to a specific level of proficiency, no need for explanations or apologizes. Cheers!!
James. You do a tremendous job explaining every song as simplistic as possible. I always thought this particular song was such a difficult song to play but how you break it down I’m inspired to give it a shot. Thanks and keep rocking.
This is fanTAStic! There was a cover band in the late 80's early 90's from the Philly area called 'Witness'...they used to cover this and 'Hocus Pocus' by Focus. They always nailed it. Well done JJ!
You teach exactly the way l like to learn. Exactly. Your guitars sound so wonderful. I can just watch you and plan to learn the song later. And I have. You are a treasure. I mean, you totally know how great it is to have someone do what you do. Clear visuals, and the tuning. And you really play so well man. It's just freak'n fun watch'n you. Thanks so much.
I never thought I'd be able to play this song that I have LOVED since its release. I just picked up the guitar again 3 years ago after a way-too-long hiatus and now I can learn one of the great tunes from one of the great teachers. You're keepin' my rockin' soul alive, JJ. Thank you. And, good luck on the surgery.
Laying here in a hospital bed looking for something to learn while I’m on the couch for the next month or so and decided this one is next. Spent 17:51 laughing my ass off! I’m in tears. GD I miss you JJ! I sincerely hope you are well. I got a decade or so on you but in another life I suspect we could have been best friends or at the very least drinking buddies. Somehow we were shaped with the same personality. Maybe it’s just an age thing but I too find my patience wearing thin with the “I want everything easy for me mentality.” My guitar lessons started with learning to read and play from sheet music and a phonograph needle. Try taking that approach Tubers. Your commentaries and lightheartedness are priceless and sorely missed. I wish the best to you and Mrs. JJ. Thank you for cheering me up.
This is a master class, JJ. To early players: JJ has presented you with a magic key to the musical universe. You will remember this lesson many moons from now.
Thanks again James another one I allways wanted to play . I like the fact that in the last couple of years you do way more lesson videos rather than just playing along with a song. A BIG THANK YOU.
Sending appreciation for the research uncovering the relatively ancient and yet still obscure mystery of this alternative tuning. Your work breathes new life into this popular classic.
Still's mother confirmed to me a rumor that Steve Stills was born right up the street from me in Texaco, IL. When I asked her she was astonished and said "Why Stephen doesn't even know that because we moved to Carmi as soon as he was born!" A really old grandmother in my hometown in Mt Vernon, IL attended the birth of Steve Stills and she was the only witness. It was just a coincidence how all of this came together because I owned an antique shop with Still's mother in Stinson Beach. It absolutely blew her mind when I asked her. Later, I managed to bring three Carmi watermelons to them, one for him, his mom and his sister, because Steve Stills grew up on Carmi watermelons.
Strangely I’ve just watched a video with Stills and Judy Collins talking about their old romance after which he wrote this song for her. That made me listen to the tune again and now here is your lesson. Very helpful....I didn’t know the tuning before.....now I can’t stop playing it.....it sounds great but is quite easy! 👍.
You champion ...... great lesson. I found 'Love rhe One You're With' lesson last week n olayed it at an open mike in Saturday - and floored 'em !!! You're a great teacher AND a good man to have on the team. Thanks so much 👍
You make me sound like a genius, and that is genius!!! Thanks for everything you do and your generous spirit. Good luck with the surgery and hopefully a quick and full recovery, we need you in full working order for many years to come. All the best.
You are the best teacher on the internet, that's just how it is. I don't know you, not paying you, just saying it how it is not unlike your explanation about the tuning of this song. Thank you for teaching me all these songs! I have learned many from you and when I search a song to learn, I go through the list of videos to see if you cover it first. I appreciate your work, and I LOVE THAT GUITAR!
Thanks sooooo much for sharing your skills on all the stuff you have done! Much appreciated james. Sorry there are some cruellers on the net, but most folks really appreciate your efforts!
You are so great! Love your videos and there are puppeteer talking hands to boot!! Well done and thanks for the great, fast, concise lessons. Please keep them coming.
Great lesson and to the point. It's nice to have someone just play the song and let the rest of us work out the details. It's probably not for new players but if you've got a couple of years under your belt, you should be fine. Just the way I like to learn. Thank you for the work you put into this tutorial, just to make our lives easier.
Perfect lesson James. And you're right - beginners aren't going to tackle this song - or really shouldn't. It's for players. You know, all us old farts who LOVE this f'n song!!! Thank you!!!!
Good job and it’s appreciated. A great quick refresher as I haven’t played it in decades and, yes.. This IS the correct tuning and vibe. Thanks again for the refresher
after a few minutes of being memorized watching you play this so effortlessly, I applaud you for giving me the pieces as you say!! Thank you. Now I have 3 songs with this tuning (all 3 were pointed out by you at the end of the lesson...haa) so I won't have to retune after just playing one song.
Great !! Long long time ago (50 plus years) I and my 3 band players played this song with 4 acoustic guitars in front of 600-plus people in my school. It was a hit. People really didn't believe they were seeing/hearing. They loved it. I forgot about the tuning, the cords (Yeaah I am getting older ... I know) Love your video. It took me 10 minutes to play it again. Thank you so much for sharing this. Still love the song very much. Please keep sharing!
Wow..GREAT..GREAT Tutorial....I'm a long time player. And not in a million years would i ever have thought i could play this song...I am now rockin with this (new to me) tuning Thank you!!! P.S. got a couple other songs out of it also...Thanks...
You know, setting the playback speed to 0.25 on the UA-cam gear icon, it's plenty slow for the slow people. Everyone complaining should try it. Seriously, epic lesson, thanks. I really dug the sitar sound.
Awesome tutorial , fella. Respect from UK. Mr Still's sure is a guitar sorcerer; bar none. His self and Jimmy Page makes life worth living with their peerless, musical prowess it has to be said.
The speed/pace/tempo of your lessons is just one of the reasons why you teach songs better than anyone on the web. Perfect. I also appreciate your approach to many solos......"it's kind of in this area, wing it and you'll sound okay" works every time. Just plant the seed of where I need to be, and I'll figure it out. Thank you.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for putting this out there. I've wanted to know how to play this song for decades, but never got serious about finding out until now (I mean, I was a teenager when it first came out, for crying out loud). The alternate tuning was the biggest thing, then the chord shapes and finally, how to play the last part of the song. I've been having some fun with this. Again, thank you for taking the time to do this.
JJ thanx for pullin that tune backoutta my dust cobwebed memory hole 😆 carry on was the same basically and 4 and 20 learned these years ago for playing solo and for my Mom she loved to hear me play back in those days even had me learnbJohn Denver songs for her❤😌 miss those times
PT -- Love the meticulous detail on your video covers, taking the viewers right into the studio and demonstrating how the musicians actually played the songs........
Wow , well, hats off to you, sir! You've really done the hard yards on this one. It's surprising how little there is in the way of actual different chords, but Stills sure got a lot out of 'em songwise. From the instant you banged out that first lick I knew I was in for something special Great trebly sting tone which is exactly how the songs sounds. It goes to show you don't need a Martin to get this song sounding pretty darn as good as the original. It's all in the fingers and getting on that rhythm and getting into 'flow'. You have clearly proved it. REALLY enjoyed this as the song has always been a big fave of mine too! Looking forward to looking at your other posted material. HUGE thanks, JJ.
Keep up the fabulous work. You teach us to fish and in the year and more I’ve been out on the boat of learning with you, I’ve netted many a marvel. Hot damn! Many thanks, the strumming just gets better and better.
Man, I love this song! This was an excellent tutorial filled with great advice and tips that I can't wait to try. The song is so much more simple than it sounds and your advice about the solo is spot on. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and impressive skill.
like everyone else, I've always wanted to learn this one. what a beautify bizarre song and tuning. thanks so much. you are much appreciated , my friend.
You’re the best, James. Exactly what I need almost every time. I think “gee, I wonder how that song goes” and, oh look, I can learn it either in one playthrough or in a lesson that is rarely much longer than the song itself. And you’re right to lecture people a bit about the tuning on this one because that’s about 95% of learning the song. I just need an extra guitar to keep in that tuning because it’s kind of a pain!
Dude I've been your student for a long time. You are dead on most of the time. I would totally suck on guitar still playin shit wrong and stinkin up the room if not for your greatness.
You're awesome so never change! :^) I really enjoy the relaxed quality of your lessons. This tuning is amazing. I've been playing around with it for hours and all those droning notes have really filled my head with possibilities.
Awesome job! My all time favourite C S N song! I really love that your going through this Woodstock era. So many great songs it was a magical time for music. A tough time in government though. But so many kings and queens of singer songwriters were born throughout the turbulent times. I hope your arm isn't bothering you to much. Good luck and Peace man!
I've been playing it in standard tuning for 50 years, the hard way. I've seen Stills do it with this tuning many times. I finally learned the easy way! Thanks. No whining about speed here. It's digital yo.
One of the most beautiful songs in history. I always wanted to play and sing this. Like my next bon fire party. I need 2 more acoustic guitars, so I can have one always tuned like this. Thank You for the magical lesson.
James, great lesson and not to worry about "too fast". That is what pause and rewind are for. This is a good learning song for intermediates (and maybe some beginners) that want to learn to trust their muscle memory when changing shapes. Really appreciate your time and effort!!
One thing that I respect and always appreciate about you James (and your alter ego pvtrickster) is how you always give this important work away for free, and never have one of those caveats that say "for the full lesson go here and join my website". Some of these guys act like THEY frigging wrote the songs themselves. I think it's a bullshit move to use other artists material to try and make a living from, especially in a public forum such as this. (playing covers out live is a whole different deal). Now I'm not sure how it all works as far as monetizing a site goes, but I have never been asked to pay something to you and yours for access to any of this music, so thank you for that James and thank you to Mrs. James who it seems to me is a very supportive wife I'm also blessed to have one who fully supports whatever i do when it comes to thr music-making-she even fixes the guitars and equipment when it breaks down.. Of course, I'm not quite as spoiled as you are bro, with all those great and very expensive guitars but I do have my share of gear and everything I need. So once again thanks JJ and Mrs.JJ
James your tutorial was perfect. I can't handle having the dogma of put this finger here. Hammer on. Strum one down . Now this finger here... You know. I like how you roll. And it sounds on. Thanks man.
When i started to watch your videos a couple of years ago (since the privatttricker era) i used to complain about the pace of the videos. Now i think it is just perfect, it seems i got some progress. Thank you from Brazil!
@James James. Hey there JJ, Thank you for posting this lesson. Man does this one bring back memory's. I really love this one from Stephen Stills. In fact, if it wasn't for CS&N/CSN&Y I probably would never had bought an acoustic guitar, let alone any electric guitars ''and so on and so on and so on''. So this comment will be a tad longer, so please bare with me, just as I'll have to do. As a kid, Stephen Stills had an enormous impact on my life, along with Crosby & Nash added into the mix. But no one plays like Stephen Stills, except Stephen Stills. Don't get me wrong. The Beatles impacted in my life musically but it was CS&N Acoustical creations, so they were on the top rung... With all that said, I happen to catch a CS&N concert from 2012. So lets get this party started because I'm not finished yet.... After I watched that video, then looking at the column to the right of the screen, there had to be another 7 or 8 different concert video's of SJBE by them but it didn't end there. There had to be about a dozen other artists, both known, along with a lot of unknowns. But just a few lessons & yours is always my first choice. I believe there were a couple of 12 year olds doing their version of the song. But by now, I was about ready to head back to the 2012 concert, this band called like ''Someone & Foxes, or Foxes & Someone playing their rendition of SJBE's. The girls were young & were accompanied by a couple of older guys, men actually. Although they were pretty good, the guitarist didn't do any justice playing in all major chords, I just had to go back to that CS&N concert. It was Stephen Stills that brought me back. He plays his song differently. Just as you show on your video, or as you said, just as Stephen played it.... So that's my story JJ, thanks again for posting it because it sure was a blast from the past on this sunny Sunday afternoon......
Nice one! For all those that speak 1-4-5, etc,... ,... is a sweet one,(with all being open, 1 at nut). This booger couldn't be easier! Thanks so much for this and all your videos, the basic play alongs, and especially the lessons. Your vids got me through Keith for last year or so,...I'm dabbling in country triad leads now, but had to come back to JJ and PTr for some more ,... Again, really appreciate your contribution to the guitar world !
Really great stuff James, The pace was great and as you stated its for those who have been playing awhile, which is probably most of us. I learned a much harder way to play this years ago and as a result stopped playing it all the way through as it just wasn't fun. You have made it fun again, Thank You! Keep them coming your teaching approach resonates with many I'm sure.

Great lesson,! Don't waste your energy on folks that don't get the program. Your killing it man! Rock on...Jimmy Dean.
Thanks JJ! I always use your videos to get me started in the right direction. Very helpful.
JJ, I haven't heard this for ages. Fantastic stuff from you, inspires me to have a go at playing it, thanks 👍
PT -- Love the meticulous detail on your video covers, taking the viewers right into the studio and demonstrating how the musicians actually played the songs........
it is uncanny how i will have a song in my head and then you do a vid . thankyou sir
Exactly the other day when I heard some Golden Earring
He's done this one before, but it might be on the older channel. Classic tune by a group that had an unbeatable sense of harmony and melody.
Great, I have been trying for so long to do this, I am going to get this done, Thanks, love your channel, don't ever stop
Strong work brother it's a great tune that makes anyone who applies them self sound like a strummer exstrodinair .
like everyone else, I've always wanted to learn this one. what a beautify bizarre song and tuning. thanks so much. you are much appreciated , my friend.
Once again, James James has the tutorial I’m looking for… thanks!
Your lessons rock, man. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much for removing the mystery and the pain! All E's! Now I think I'll have a go at it! 👍
Best CSN lesson I've ever seen. Many thanks!
One of your best lessons. You give just the facts. Very good !
This is great, from what I could find it is the best. Why would anyone complain?
One of the most beautiful songs in history. I always wanted to play and sing this. Like my next bon fire party.
I need 2 more acoustic guitars, so I can have one always tuned like this. Thank You for the magical lesson.
James, great lesson and not to worry about "too fast". That is what pause and rewind are for. This is a good learning song for intermediates (and maybe some beginners) that want to learn to trust their muscle memory when changing shapes. Really appreciate your time and effort!!
Not too fast, great tuition. I am so excited to be playing this at a festival this summer. I love this tuning.
Thanks for the tuning and the rest. Have always loved the harmonics in this tune. Absolut banging on that bottom E. Love it.
Great job James. Thanks for going into it. Glad I finally got to play this one and read the history behind the songwriting.
such a great song done so well,
James your tutorial was perfect.
I loved it completely right up until " And I'm not gonna......." After that I was just laughing. Sir, you are inspiring. Truly
"Tuning is taken care of...NO DEBATE!" Yes! Great lesson, as always. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this! It’s my new favorite Judy Blue Eyes tutorial.
