Don't Tell Ray - DIY PT2399-Based Oil Can Delay

The classic oil can-style delay sound is finally available as a DIY project! Don't Tell Ray emulates the legendary Tel-Ray Adineko and Organ Tone delays. With a preamp capable of a moderate amount of grit, sinusoidal modulation, and modulation times corresponding to the physical transport of the units, you can go from a nice, clean slapback like a brand new unit all the way to a gritty, wobbly, dark delay more akin to a unit that has been sorely neglected over the years. old oil cans DO go into runaway bro. depends on the circuit... but nice job, bri, the overall tone is very close. delay time on them was REAL short! right on!

The delay time was the one area where I purposely went beyond what the oil cans do. The rest of it I tried to stick pretty close to what the older units do. Getting it to go into runaway oscillation should be as easy as a resistor change (R20)

@@ozerik yeah, can. they can also sound horribly distorted if not aligned right, or not work at all if the wrong fluid is used in them, or if the aluminum disc is scratched or damaged. there's a lot of variables.

@@666pinkster I had no I DEA until this comment that such things existed! I work a LOT with tin cans, and have built dozens of delays into tuna and pineapple cans 😊🤣

It's a modulated delay, which gives it some chorus-y sounds and with feedback it gives it a little bit of a reverb-like quality.
