    I love the vibrato-like quality of the echoes. I don’t think of vintage delays as being particularly unique but this one really has a different character.

    Great video. I also bought one of these and agree that sounds amazing. Thanks for the rundown on how OG oil can delays actually work. It’s always fun to nerd out with you. Also groovy to see the Science Fair. I nabbed one of the Halloween versions and absolutely love the variety of sound - though I lean heavily on the Rat side. Great video as always. Thanks!

      I ended up getting both because I have no self control and these have tones to explore.. The Oil Can is so damn good, particularly the secret mode which adds a second tape head.

    There is a great UA-cam video by Uncle Doug repairing and rebuilding a 1977 Morley Evo-1 oil can delay. Look it up. It was posted on February 13 2021, and it's 1:16:25 of fascinating.
    I've always wanted a vintage Morley Evo-1 Oil Can or Tel-Ray Adineko delay (although I prefer the Morley version). Oil Can is my absolute favorite delay/reverb/modulation effect.
    Back in 2018 I picked up a Catalinbread Adineko pedal designed by Howard Gee, a true master. It sounds great and captures most closely how an actual Morley sounds,...and the controls emulate the actual controls on a true oil can delay, short of actually changing the oil itself to achieve different capacitance and viscosity properties. I also tried the OBNE Black Fountain oil can V1, but preferred the Catalinbread, it was not even close.
    And to this day I still haven't found any other oil can delay that even comes close to Howard's Adineko, including the OBNE Black Fountain V2. The OBNE BFv2 is certainly better than the v1, but IMHO Howard's Adineko blows everything else out of the water...oil?...water?...to this day, with the exception of an actual Morley Evo-1.

      Hi there!! They’re Gemini Mercury One Duobuckers. Really enjoying the in-between tones on them, hand made for not that much more than the price of a mass produced set. Also, I can coil tap them and not lose a ton of volume. Definitely recommend checking them out.

    The best mode of the pedal is the secret mode. With the switch up, turn all the knobs to zero then flip the switch down. The LED will start blinking to show you are in secret mode. Now you can feel free to move the knobs however you like. Supposedly this mode adds a second recording head to the emulation. All I know is that it sounds fantastic. Flip the switch back up to exit secret mode.

    • @StompboxBreakdown

      That's cool, I'll have to give it a shot. I purposely don't watch other people's demos of pedals I plan on covering because I don't want them to influence my approach. I don't know if the secret mode came out in one of those or later on JHS but I missed it entirely, I'm just learning about it now in the comments. It's not mentioned in the instruction booklet either. To me, that pretty much spells out that this is just a preview of an oil can algorithm with bigger plans.

    I really want one but only in standard 3 Series white.
    Creating scarcity is antithetical to the mission of the 3 Series -- making high quality effects accessible. I hope JHS gets it right and has a regular release.

    I'd be interested in a comparison video of the JHS Oil Can, Catalinbread Adineko, and the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Black Fountain. I have a feeling the OBNE would come out as the one to get based on variations of sounds, but it would be interesting to hear all three back to back.
    Also, tell us more about those new pickups!

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  9 місяців тому +3

      If I had all 3, I'd definitely do a little demonstration of the differences. I've got another delay that draws inspiration from oil can, the Greer Black Tiger. It's mostly just a really nice sounding lo-fi PT2399-based delay, though. No modulation.
      The pickups are Gemini Mercury Ones. My first boutique-y set, hand-built, with a really nice coil tap that doesn't drastically drop the output volume. Dropped them in last week and have been enjoying the heck out of them. Highly recommended. I'm gonna order a set of single coils for a Strat I have that needs something new going on.

    I loved my Catalinbread Adineko, but both examples I owned made a weird background buzz I couldn't live with, so they had to go. I'd buy this in a heartbeat, unfortunately JHS doesn't see the necessity, value or use of having trails, same goes for the Old Bloodnoise Endeavors Black Fountain. Then there's also the fact that it was limited edition and came and went before I even knew it was out. So I just got a UA Orion delay today (Echoplex sound) as I was in the market for a simple delay. GREAT VIDEO.

      Man I have the exact same complaint. Love love love the Adineko, truly the best oil can delay on the market, but the noise floor is penthouse level high, making it a total deal breaker. At least live. I’ve recorded with it but our sound guy had to do some editing tricks to get it sounding dead quiet in the open spaces. Glad to see oil can delays getting some love. Such a great sounding effect!

      You should try adjusting the trim pot for the preamp. It should take the noise down if it was increased by accident or from a prior user. Catalinbread wanted to emulate the "analog" feel and sound of the traditional preamps that would have been in the original TelRay units.

    • @SS-gx7tg
      @SS-gx7tg 9 місяців тому

      @@mattayers3794wtf? There’s a preamp trim pot inside the adineko?! I guess I should’ve been wise to that, especially seeing as the echorec has the same and both these were developed around the same time andwith Herman and j deville lending expertise. Btw check what Mr black dropped today!

      @TheFlutecart 5 місяців тому

      Hmmm, I have the Adineko, never troubled by the noise. It is my go to "need even more delay", my usual engaged delay is Volante. By the time I kick on the Adineko, I often have a fuzz or harder drive pedal on as well, perhaps that's why? Did not even know about the trimpot. I have the Zero Point flange from Catalinbread also - it has a trimpot for a boost in it but never messed with it, it's a little hot now but I think I like it like that. Best sounding tape chorus pedal this side of DECO. Just getting accustomed to my DECO V2, it will replace the Zero Point but the Adineko will stay put for now, love the dang thing, they should make an Adineko Epoch Deluxe, I'd buy it.

    Love your channel and how you review such unique and interesting pedals out there as opposed to the standard flavor of the month pedals so many others stick top. This channel is a refreshing change of pace from the status quo. Anyway, Adineko and Greer Royal Velvet are great spins on the oil can theme though it sounds like you’re familiar with both. And while not an oil can but certainly weird, I’ve been loving my BOSS Tera Echo lately. I’d love if you did a vid on that pedal someday. Or the Fernweh by JupiterFX. PS Hope Santa brings you some nice presents!
    Edit: I meant Greer's Black Tiger, not Royal Velvet (accidentally ate a 500mg edible, reality doesn't even exist right now) but the Royal Velvet is still an amazing Vox in a box, and when run at 18v it's one of the best overdrives ever. That's actually true of most of Nick Greer's pedals. He currently has limited stock of the Sonic Boom 2023 edition. One of the best pedals of all time. While the Lightspeed gets all the attention and understandably so as it's a great pedal worth the hype, but the Sonic Boom is much better imo. It adds this girthy glassy quality that just makes everything sound better. I own an original Sonic Boom (it's been THE always-on magic sauce pedal I've used for 14 years now) and myself and many others have been pestering Nick to revive it and last month he did so I stocked up and bought TWO 2023 versions as it really is a holy grail pedal for me.. I tried multiple guitars amps and pickups and did tons of tests and after almost a full day I'm happy to say he 100% replicated the original with no change whatsoever, at least not to the sound - the only change is the visual, the 2023 pedal is much friendlier on the eyes than his earlier pedals, though I like the rough aesthetic of the early stuff. Anyway I'll stop blabbing otherwise I'll go off on a million tangents and wind up pontificating about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Actually that's a great 3:07am meal, gotta make one now. Thanks again for the great vid

    Tell me about the new pickups! You had a SD 59 in the bridge before right? What’s different about the new ones?

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  9 місяців тому

      Yeah, a '59 in the bridge and a JB Jazz in the neck. I really love that combination, same combo in my Explorer, almost the same combo in my Les Paul, and they worked great in the Jetstream except when I wanted a more focused sound. Coil tapping gives a variation, but it also drops the output considerably.
      I was turned on to Gemini Pickups, a hand-made pickup company pretty close to where I live, specifically the Mercury One humbuckers. So I've got a pair of those in there now, and they're wired as Dualbuckers, so there is a coil tap feature, but it somehow maintains most of the output. Highly recommend checking them out, and price is about in line with what you'd pay for a new set of mass-produced pickups.

    I'm guessing you haven't discovered secret mode which opens up another sonic realm. I don't know who discovered this and if the other 3 Series pedals have this, but JHS never mentioned the Oil Can having an Easter Egg of sorts. Very easy to access it.
    Turn off the pedal, turn the mod switch up, then turn all knobs to zero, next flip the mod switch down and turn on the pedal. The LED blinks when you're in this mode. It adds another tape head and you can even get chorus sounds from it or anything in between.
