Thanks. Just got through tightening those 4 pesky bolts. Got it back together once...found out dimmer didn't work... got it together a second time... ignition didn't work... found your video which included exploded diagram and got it on the third try. Thanks again and thanks for including diagram.
Glad it worked out for you Kevin. As you can see from my video, it took me a couple of try's as well to get mine all sorted out. Take care enjoy and have fun...
I hope you see this. My friend took my steering column apart and tightened the tilt. He lost the snap ring, but I found it. He now has congestive heart failure and can’t finish the job. Even though I have the GM manual, and it shows the diagram, and the snap ring, I can’t figure out where it goes. I can’t put the rest of it back together until I figure that out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Mike
Hey Mike @sportiessc sorry I didn't respond sooner. The snap ring shouldn't be that big of an issue. Once you get it all back together, almost, you need a compression tool, to get that snap ring back in. Automotive shop should have proper sized rings, I;m guessing around 1/2" maybe 5/8's not certain. Measure the Steering Shaft that that ring goes on. Any more questions don't hesitate to reach out to me, maybe in text or other social media. Let me Know how it goes. Thanks. Have a good day.
@@1Patient Hi sir, I'm not talking about the one that holds the spring down. This is a very small snap ring, maybe 1/8" wide. I can't for the life of me figure out where it goes. I wish I could share a snapshot of what's in the tech manual from Buick. It wouldn't have come out of the flasher, would it? Thanks Mike
@@sportiessc Hey Mike. Im Joel David by-the-way. I hope it isn't from the flasher, I mean, I don't think it has any snap rings, it is held in with a philips no.2 or 1 can't remember. You will need a pick to remove the c-clip to get down to the first set of bearings, i.e., the "Upper" bearing will be the first one you will come into contact with. You will have to go as far as the turn signal removal, and behind that is another plastic part that has to be removed before you get access to the bearings, Hope this helps.
on my 75 Camaro, tilt wheel, column, my key is difficult to turn and only turns while the column is in the fully up position...? Any idea what's gone wrong? The only replacement parts I can find is that 1/4 round gear looking thing.. plastic, at the end of the ignition switch,, I can see it in your video.. is that a common problem spot? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.
thanks, from 1973 until 1987 they made these trucks with that body style with the exception of the front ends changing, the most in history, I also have a 71 chevy c20 2wd!
That body style I wanted so bad, I almost bought one after I test drove it, I couldn't get my long legs to operate the peddles (manual trans) without my knees hitting the steering wheel all the time, so, I bought this truck instead. Now though, my heart is set on a 1965 or 66.
JDE... I was cleaning up the tilt column on a Scout... same-ish column. Upper and #2 bearing races let the balls loose. Any thoughts? I captured 12 and then 13... upper race had 14 slots. Any ideas?
Thanks Steve for question. You could always repack the races with some grease, put correct number of bearings back in and seal the deal. Was there damage inside the column or any worn surfaces that should be smooth? Is the bearing cage gone, the races pitted?
Needle nose pliers, push in and turn a 1/4 or 1/2 turn counter clockwise to loosen, keep pressure on it while turning. Mine seemed a little gummed up with old grease, I just cleaned it a little and pumped more newer grease in there... any other questions feel free to ask... later dude.
I have to do this on my '78 Big 10, I have a cruise control and have to replace the indicator sleeve so I will have to go a little further into it but this helps a lot. Thanks!!!
Yes, and I went to pick and pull and got a second Bezel, and arranged it so I could get four more gauges into the cluster... however, I am probably going to make one out of a piece of flat aluminum and paint it up,
I drove my vehicle with loose wheel for over a year, once I tightened up those 4 bolts everything came together tightened right up. Was the Spring and Retainer Clip properly installed? Were all the Bearings Re-Seated properly, is it possible the ball joint got some ware on it? Sorry Bud, wish I could be of more help to ya...
Great vid and tunes. How long did this take start to finish ? I have a column with a aftermarket wheel on it I want to put everything back to stock. Is it easier to just look for a new column ? Horn dont work ect thanks
+rodkrell1 Good luck with finding an original Column, you might get lucky at a Wrecking Yard, but don't hold your breath. The new columns are out there, but I don't like that look of them, the original is way better if you can find one. It took probably 3-4 maybe 5 hours, but I was taking pictures etc...and documenting all the steps...so that I wouldn't get lost in the process. I would suggest to do it all at once, don't stop and come back to it later, because you might forget a step. Take care and good luck. Thumbs up bud...
Great video I am having to do the same thing to mine but can't find the pivot pins. The part store (advance, oreilly, and napa) can't even find the number for me. any idea where i can get the pivot pins at????
Could you do a video on the horn, I have a 1969 chevelle and I don't even know were to begin with all the wiring of the horn throughout the steering wheel to the column to the horns. When I took the steering wheel off there were no wires connecting. The first part were you took the vice grip and a hammer and pulled the tri piece (idk what it's called) there wasn't even a copper board behind it, it's just that piece and I know you need one with it. So I'm i screwed do I need a new column?
I have an after-market steering wheel mounted on the Column, so a couple of proprietary differences, the wire and copper colored circular circuit board are for the horn of that steering wheel, everything under the black cover plate is the guts of the original column. Is it possible that your horn wire was ripped out and or just not there?
Yeah i figured it out, my dad had an extra column laying around and it fit, the problem was, was that first off the copper circuit board wasn't even there and second I guess the owners before hand decided to take the original steering wheel off and doing that, my guess is they cut the wire, left the original circuit along with the wheel and found one without the copper that fit. So now we just need to connect the wheel now that we have the correct parts and it'll work.
Good job on the picture sequence, though I would prefer a voice over rather than the tech-mime thing. I have a 78 Sierra Classic truck with an Olds 455 Rocket engine, and have ignition switch problems as well as the wobbly column thing. My ignition is not like this - there is a security tab that must be pushed in for the ignition to come out. Matt B's video, 1978 GM and Chevy Ignition Lock Removal shows this in detail (fortunately for me, as mine didn't slide out nicely after removing the retaining screw, like in this video).
