8 Month Update - The 3M Headliner Glue has begun to fail in the hot 125 Degree days of summer. It's still holding on but patches of it have begun detaching. I'd suggest researching a different glue if you plan to do this repair.
I'm doing research to do this exact job. A lot of advice I'm getting says that you have to spray the fabric on the foam side as well as the headliner, otherwise it's liable to peel away. Some folks also say if 3M for headliner (I think 70 or 77?) doesn't work, you can try 3M 90. Less forgiving but stronger for more heat. In case you decide to try doing this job again. Thanks for the video regardless, I'll reference it when I attempt it on my car soon.
@@JordanPayneLV got the headliner dropped enough in 5 mins flat ... 3 hours to goo gone/plastic scrape all the old adhesive residue off the top so I could stick the new one on... 5 mins to put it back together lol 😂😭
Thanks for making this video. Was good to see the “no window removal” method in action before trying it myself. Got mine out the same way you did. I did order an oem replacement headliner (which will probably fail too🤭), but plan to practice the material replacement on the old one. Did learn that I swear and talk to myself too much while doing these jobs to ever make a UA-cam video lol. The 981 content has been great. Keep up the great work.
Glad to see and hear this. I replaced my first failed one with a junkyard GT4 Alcantara headliner, which has also started to fail. I used the window removal method and it stressed me out. I also read that doing the “taco” method can cause permanent damage to the new or recovered headliner. Although the video is cut and edited while getting the headliner in and out, it seems like you were able to get it both ways without having to fold it? I had my original liner recovered in a microsuede along with my A pillars by and automotive upholstery shop at the same time I got the GT4 liner, but now that the GT4 liner is failing, it’s time to do this job again. So happy to hear of a successful non window-removing option 👍🏻👍🏻
I have a 2010 Cayman S and reside in Florida and had the headliner delaminate when hurricane Michael went by in 2018. This happened overnight, due to the barometric swing, and I'm lucky to have got that much time before it turned into a head towel. My car is kept in an air conditioned garage and if possible on an outing I find shade for parking. It looks like the 981 has the same problem, but believe it or not getting the headliner out of the car appears to be a bit easier of a mission. The 987, both 1 & 2. have trim to remove all the way around the headliner and it didn't want to just pop off easily either. I wish I'd just had those hard foam blocks on the back of the headliner, but no, there was a hard plastic grid epoxied to it that is like sharks teeth. The headliner wasn't going to come out the door, for me anyways and those sharks teeth left a few marks on the interior soft touch paint. Needless to say I also had to get some elastomeric interior paint and redo the afflicted parts. I went through the same basic steps for prepping for the new headliner application, but did the installation a little different. So heat and humidity is the enemy due to a water based adhesive and it separates from the soft foam. I ordered some upholstery grade material for my replacement headliner and used 3M under hood adhesive to do the installation. My Cayman is black with a sand beige interior, and I figured since I own a crocodile, I'd get some cocoa brown material and install that on the headliner. Worked great and no problem for 6 years now 🤞👌👍! If your interested in the material it is sold by Rothman Associates in Miami, Florida, phone (305) 573-8300. The Item # BKPRED-LIZ Desc. Lizardo-Cocoa (L). You can get this material in different colors or you may find something else you like. Remember to just keep your head towel free 😅🤣😂.
Have you thought about retrofitting a 718/991.2 steering wheel to your car? I did it to my 981 and it updates the interior very much imo! Cheers for the tutorial also
@@JordanPayneLV I got mine from ebay and it came with an airbag, it was a simple swap. You can get the turn dial coded in but I bought a steering wheel without it.
Very helpful video. I got the #$&@ thing out with no damage to the car or me! I was originally planning on using 3M 77 adhesive but after reading the comments I'm going to do some research. Thanks for documenting the steps.
Glad you got yours out! Yeah I was a bit worried after I posted this about the comments but so far the headliner is still staying up nicely. We’ll see what happens in summer
Do you know the part number of the clips that popped off? Mine broke completely and I can't find the part number. It seems like Porsche does not sell that specific part.
Having the same issue with my 981. Does the contrast in the A pillars material stand out enough to go ahead and replace the material with the matching sued??
The contrast doesn’t bother me, I decided not to do suede on the A pillars because they get touched more often and I figured the pattern from the suede would get all messy quickly
3M headliner adhesive or 3M 45 photo adhesive??? They make a lot of stuff.... The Permatex headliner adhesive is good to 170 degrees I can't imagine the 3M version being less than that.
did you have to bend the roof piece to get out/into of the car? In another post/youtube, the instruction was to bend it, but your video doesn't show that was the case. if you could clarify, i'd appreciate thanks a lot
it's a problem with ALL German cars because of their regulation force the manufacture to use environmental friendly glues, mine just started sagging and it's hecka annoyin
The ones attached to the headliner? The “ball and socket” ones? Well it would probably still stick up there using that high quality Velcro stuff they have in there, but it might fall down over time

Thanks for the update
A lot of shops use DAP Weldwood Contact Adhesive Top & Trim HHR Solvent Type Spray Grade which needs to be sprayed with an air sprayer.
Thank you! You just saved me $700. Very kind of you to take the time to make this video
Of course, glad it helped! :)
Thank you very much for this video, redid my 2007 Cayman S headliner with the help of your video. Much appreciated!
Glad it helped! Good job 👌🏻💪🏻
Had this problem in my GT4... Crazy how it happens on the 981 generation cars in the heat. Amazing vid my bro!
Right? You’d think Porsche would have that figured out by now, thank you man 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mine just dropped, who did your repair, Im in Boca
Great video, to get out the head liner. No need to disassemble the rear window? 😊thank you
Super job and thanks for your hard work. You're saving me a lot of money. The dealer is a joke!
Glad it could help!
appreciate your time and effort film this sir!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video - I needed to replace my XM antenna and this helped me drop it enough to get access without breaking :)
Glad it helped out! 🙌🏻

I had to remove the windows. I couldn't get it out without. Mine is a PDK, probably the reason.
@@samyb2834 yeah maybe the shifter is a little taller in the PDK?

Hopefully it stays up, so far so good!
Very good job !
Good video well done, only thing that I would like to know how many tins of spray glue did you need ?
Thank you! About 1.25 cans, the glue is still holding up despite the Las Vegas summer heat. We’ll see if it lasts through the whole summer

I haven’t looked into it! Do you need a new airbag as well? I love the 718 for the drive mode dial but I don’t think that’ll work in a 981?

Very nice... Instead of brushing the last section on, I'd have just masked the black side of the fabric and still sprayed it on though...
mine's also atlas grey, best color.
Good job
Thank you! It’s still holding on after all this time, hopefully it survives the summer :)
Where can i buy new clips like those i cant find them anywhere!!! Please help if anyone knows
$80,000 car quality pure quality
Yep, mine too. That’s why I’m here watching. There’s a handful of other stuff; door sill and headlamps’ glass (plastic).

As someone who has worked with 3M adhesives for many years be ready to re-do the fabric as 3M starts to fail around 87 deg F. You been warned!
Ahhhh no don’t say that >.<
Good thing it’s almost winter time
Fire Stick what would be the adhesive of choice ? If not using the 3M product. Like Jordan I live in a warm region.

I didn’t have to bend mine, you have to rotate the piece just right to get it out though
FINALLY have time over the summer to do it! Ss cables going in this Thursday and headliner fix!
Do some research on alternative headliner glue, in the dead of the summer heat mine is finally showing some signs on weakening
