- A 4-minute tutorial showing how to add text to your videos in SHOTCUT, the open source video editor. The technique involves placing your text on a separate clip and on a higher track than your main video. This makes it easy for you to position the text when and where you want it - and also allows you to add fade-ins and fade-outs if required.
Thanks, Jonray. Just one tip for anyone watching this: you need to add a second video track on the timeline. The text goes in the second video track. I didn't do that, and was having a hard time--impossible!--trying to make this work. We can SEE that in Jonray's tutorial, but he doesn't SAY it, so it's easy to miss.

Hi, I simply used Notepad for the copied text. It's useful to make the Notepad box stay on top always, so I used a program called Turbo Top to do that.

Hello. I'm following your tutorial and my text background suppose to be transparent. However it is solid black. I have no idea why, I have tried this many times and I can't seem to get it transparent. Please help.
Hi - have you dragged the text clip from the preview screen down to the timeline? Until you do that it has a black background.
@@jonrayjr421 Yes. I follow the tutorial exactly. I have no idea why mine is black. It blocks out the video underneath.
thank you for your tutorials Jonray! i was myself just working on a short clip, and suddenly found that all of my text overlays became opaque and blacked out the layers underneath. have you ever encountered this before?
There seems to be no way to get my text onto the timeline. Dragging does nothing.
Can you remind us (me) how to lock some text in place- such that if you move one text block, the rest don't move with it? Would that be "unsnap to the grid"?

you can change the video settings to HQ just below the video, on the right corner

When I open other and select text then type what I want then say "OK" my video disappears and instead all I see is the text box as its own video. I am following the directions exactly. Any ideas, folx?
Hi, click on the Shotcut preview screen showing the text and drag it down to the timeline.
@@jonrayjr421 that does not work. I get the same problem as Jo Qima'au. When I drag and drop the text to a new track, the text shows as white on sold black, completely blanking the sound and video of the other track for the duration the text plays. And yes, I DO have the colour set to 'transparent'.

Ah OK, I get your problem now. You have "Ripple Trim and Drop" switched on. See the circular icon in the timeline menu (two icons to the right of the magnet icon)? That needs to be switched off (white, not blue). It's the default setting so I assumed it would be off. When it's on, yes, it will INSERT the text clip in the centre of your clip and push the rest of the clip to the right. When it's off you can add the text clip anywhere you like. I hope that solves the problem! PS also make sure the next icon (circular with a star is also white). That applies the ripple effect to all tracks, which you don't want.
