This is a real treasure. The amount of musicianship from all of them at such an young age is impressive. And unlike classical music or ever jazz and rock, there was little recorded history and literature for them to study. But they are very serious about what they're doing here, very dedicated musicians no different than a small jazz combo. No prancing front man. No dramatic virtuoso. Amazing stuff and they have never quit and never abandoned this beautiful folk music they began with.

Rest in Peace Francisco "Frank" Gonzalez. You are not forgotten, nor the band that you founded in 1973 and that's still going strong today.

These guys are one of the great American bands. They can do it all, and they do it with honesty and integrity. I love their corridos as much as I like their Texas shuffles. They play with EVERYBODY, and they are always worth listening to. VIVE LOS LOBOS DEL ESTE DE LOS ANGELES!!

Usually the comment section is crowded with remarks attempting to be hip or insightful. If you read many comments, you know I’m right. People talk about themselves as if their take is the only one to consider. I’m no different (although I make no claim at being hip).
The important thing is to go see these artists before they quit. You will have one hell of an evening. The show (2023) is less of what’s shown here, but that’s because they had to make room for all the rest of their catalog. I’ve been fortunate to see them many times, and I will continue to see them every time they pass through Tejas. Add to the experience the opening act(s) they bring along. You’re watching people that love what they do, and I’m so glad they went ahead and played for everyone, not just their mothers.

I remember back in the mid 70's. They would come to Cal Poly Pomona every Chicano Week and do a two hour set. My wife and I would follow them every other Thursday night at a club across the street from St. Alphonso's church. The beginning and timing of Los Lobos was beautiful in solidifying "Chicano Pride." Que Viva!

That club was the Manny Lopez Niteclub on Atlantic. Los Lobos were looking for a place to rehearse/play. I was working the bar for my father prior to joining the Navy. Manny met with the boys and they worked out a weekday schedule. That was around September 1976. They polished their skills created a following that is still with them. They played a tribute set to my father when they played Humphrey’s in San Diego in 2006. I remember him standing and turning around to the crowd. When he sat down he said “The boys have done well.”

It is so interesting that this band stayed close to the Traditional Mexican sound.....as opposed to Tejano Bands...which was more of a boarder sound.....and then they morphed into a Blues, Rock act while keeping the Mexican musical traditions AT THE SAME TIME. A TRUE AMERICAN BAND.

Back in the day in 75 there was a black mynah bird named 7up who liked to amuse me. The drive up to Folsom was a familiar route. On the day of my 19th surprise party, I remember skipping everyother step to race up the stairs ahead of Tita and Norma. I got in through the back doorway and surprised the whole lot of you who were standing the in the dark. It was such fun. Days of wine and hazy smoked filled rooms. Youth. I never thanked you Conrad. Never forgotten.

    • @dougsmith7083
      @dougsmith7083 4 роки тому +2

What an awesome remembrance! Conrad was the first band member I approached upon seeing Los Lobos for the 2nd time - five years after my first time seeing them in a bar here in Vancouver that was jammed as tight as possible with maybe 200 people in 1981.
When I approached Conrad, the 1st Warner/Slash album was out and, because they already had a loyal following (those 200 people who were at that pair of '81 shows...plus, everyone who missed it and, hated themselves for missing them/who had become numb from our voracious praise).
The general public had a bit of a glimpse of them via early video television shows too. They ended up playing a sold out show at a concert hall that was packed...approx 1200-ish+
After the 3rd encore I approached Conrad to see if he would talk about bass guitar and, answer my questions about the more traditional instruments he played. He was awesome. Brought me back to the room where the other band members were hanging out and cooling off after a long and, energetic night of music.
I mentioned the 1981 shows at The Railway Club in Vancouver and, all talking completely stopped. Silence. I was 16 at that 1981 show (always been very tall and, looked older and, played with bands since I was 14...never a problem with me getting into a venue from '80 onward).
When the silence broke (boy was that 10 seconds of silence freakin nerve wracking!) Everyone was shaking my hand and offering a beer, slapping me on my back, etc.
It turned out that those two shows were the only two shows that the band didn't get ripped off by the club/promoter on the entire 2 week trek. In fact, the band said that those two shows were by FAR the most fun, best crowds, and, biggest pick-me-up they could have imagined as the 5 prior shows that were in Northern California, Oregon and Washington State had been so poorly attended or, if attendance was good, the PA system was terrible, or, the promoters flat out neglected to offer the band the bare minimum "rider" of clean towels and a case of beer...
They were almost gonna cancel the Vancouver shows and, forget about the hassle of the border crossing because they were down to a very puny amount of both band and personal funds.
The two Vancouver shows each paid over $1500. They were fed, provided with ample beer (they were not crazy drinkers anyways) and, a place to crash. It was a tremendous lifesaver.
They have never forgotten about this. Backstage after that 1986 show...they were EXACTLY who you are seeing in this film. Most humble and respectful and friendly people ever. They treated myself and the half dozen other Vancouver people who were in their backstage area like they were honoured to have us join them.
      Amazing

So proud of my roots and those who came here from across the border with same American dream as those who came here from across the oceans.

En cambio estos señores no se avergüenzan y no niegan sus raises mucho por ellos

Here are my notes of this video with a set list (containing time splits) if anyone wants to make mp3's for themselves:
Los Lobos at East Los Angeles College (1975)
appearing on KCET's (PBS) "La Cultura" program
entitled "Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles".
    Personnel (from left to right):
    Cesar Rosas
    Louie Pérez
    Conrad Lozano
    Frank (later "Francisco") González
    David Hidalgo
Set List (with video time splits):
00:00 El Pájaro Cu (with band's founding history at end of song)
01:54 (band background, banter, and rehearsing)
    04:19 Las Tres Huastecas
    10:14 Sabor a Mí
    14:43 Siete Laguras
    17:58 El Canelo
    21:26 Maria Chuchena

The correct song's name is not "Siete Laguras." It is "Siete Leguas" (legua = league). And, yes, "El Torito Jarocho" starts at 4:19 while "Las Tres Huastecas" starts at 7:28.
BTW, how come nobody has noticed that the program ends at 27:54?

One day I was working at an old church in San Gabriel and the custodian was this veterano from gerrity lomas; he mentioned growing up around Conrads pad when they called him "animal, beast, wolf, etc...one of those nick names. Also when I worked with Dr Cobos at ELAC, he told me how they were his students too. I took some inspiration from this group as they took it to the Mex Folk roots and Rock. Shout out to city terrace hills; I'll be doing a gig on gerraty this Sunday at the circle. -Angel from 2nd st & Marianna Ave, Santuario de Guadalupe!! Ollin!!

I love this. Foster parents in LA exposed me to mariachi music, and when i was adopted and went elsewhere I "forgot" about it. That's until 1984 when Los Lobos came to my college and played. I thought, I remember this. So much passion in the music.
Saying that, they played at a bar in Dewey Beach Delaware in 1995, and i was escorted out for throwing gummy bears. Sorry guys.

I really, really enjoyed this video, the music, the whole thing was spectacular. I absolutely recommend anyone who likes good music to check this out. Dynamite stuff.
Having said that, nothing can really top the Geraldo tease at 29:54. It's too perfect for words to describe.
Also, that soap opera was just getting interesting when the video cut off. I am hereby challenging the Internet to find a copy of THAT episode, too!
