I'm amazed that you didn't know Lea Solonga! She is a legend of musical theater, not only for her portayal of Eponine in Les Miserable but also as Kim in Miss Saigon. She was also the singing voice of Jasmine in Disney's original animated release of Alladin. She is amazing at mixing powerful vocals with emotion. I hope you enjoy more of her voice!
I first saw Lea in 1989 at the Theater Royal. That was my first exposure this this tour de force. She has given many of us some live memories that will never fade.
By many theater nerds, this is considered to be the best performance of the best Broadway song ever written. As the voice of Jasmine and Mulan, Lea is the epitome of the Disney princess. Not everyone knows the name, but everyone knows the voice.
You are watching the gold standard of that song. Lea is the Eponine! She is a Westend, Broadway and Disney legend and still performing on the same high level.
Almost everyone accepts she's the definitive Eponine, whom she portrayed in the original Broadway production of Les Miserablės in 1993. But she also played the beloved Fantine in the musical's Broadway revival in 2006. But it was as Kim in the original Miss Saigon that she won both the Tony's (Broadway) and the Sir Laurence Olivierè (West End) awards. She's a true theater legend. She's Filipina (Pinay), btw.
The original Broadway production of Les Mis was in 1987 and Frances Ruffelle was Eponine (as well as being the voice of Eponine on the Broadway soundtrack). Lea Salonga joined the cast as a replacement in 1993, but wasn’t on a recording on it until this 10th anniversary concert.
Les Miserables was a theatrical musical way before it was a movie. You should grab a bottle of wine one evening, settle back on your sofa and watch the full Les Miserables concert that Lea Salonga's beautiful performance came from. I promise you will be astounded. It's a collection of some of the greatest musical theatre songs ever written! :)
Before it was made into a movie, les miz was and still is one of the greatest Broadway musical. Leah is also the singing voice of 2 Disney princesses, Jasmine of Alladin and Mulan. She was also the original lead actor of the Broadway hit Miss Saigon where she won a Tony award.
Dearest Schnell....forget the movie! Watch the entire of this anniversary concert and you will be FLAWED at the voices. This was a stunning evening of musical theater! Casts from all over the world were brought together for this night.....its is truly remarkable! PS....Lea has a connection to Morissette. Lea was a judge on the voice and was blown away by Morissette.
So true....forget the movie. Watch this 10th anniversary concert instead which is a concert version of the best musical ever written. You will be a fan forever.
Yes, I can't believe she said Lea was doing a COVER from the movie! And she's never heard one of the most famous Broadway musicals pronounced? Never heard of Les Miz? She should not be doing this kind of reaction video. It means nothing.
This genre is called musical theater. This musical played on Broadway, in London, and stages around the world well before any movie of it was released. This particular performance is iconic. It alone defines the craft of musical theater. Lea herself is from the Philippines and faced much prejudice breaking into the top rungs of the music business. The part of Eponine is the most iconic part in one of the most iconic musical theater productions, Les Misrables. And, Lea set the standard for this part with performances like this one. I think you would find it deeply rewarding to explore the genre of musical theater much more broadly. There is a mountain of brilliant vocal discoveries in the offering for you.
Thank you so much for featuring our most loved and pride the Disney legend Ms Lea Salonga. Lea, is a great storyteller and as they say, "speaks in the right pitch". I believe she is not a cover but the original one. God bless and more of her performances please.. Thanks!!❤️❤️❤️🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Lea is one of the finest known artist in The Philippines. Philippine Pride. The country knows her very well so is the International Music industry. Great reaction to this artist.
Lea is my childhood crush when I was 6yrs old. That was almost 40yrs ago. Now, it looks like I’m able to see Lea sing LIVE this year since she’ll be having a concert at Northridge California. I get to see her sing LIVE 40 years later.
@Schnell Jordan This isn't a cover. This is the real thing. She defined the role and, thus, the song. This is her song. The version you watched is, I believe, the Les Miserable 10th Anniversary Concert. Les Miserable is first and foremost a Stage Production. The Movie was a film adaptation of the Stage Production. Lea Salonga played that part in the Stage Production and, like I said, defined the role and how this song is supposed to be sung. That's why she stands stock still and sings. And that's why she doesn't react to the applause. She wasn't really singing the song. She was performing the song. You just witnessed an Undisputed Master at work.
To be clear, she didn't originate the role. That was Frances Ruffelle from the West End & Broadway cast. However, Lea was the one chosen to be part of "The Dream Cast" for this concert.
She's a Filipina Diva of international fame especially in broadway, disney movies, and performances with international stars, hope you feature more of her songs
I have seen it live twice in Rochester NY, les miz 10 is the best ever.Having read the book with every character being a tragedy, Eponine is the one I feel the most for and Lea hit her emotion perfectly .... remember, this character was the original spoiled daughter from the inn at the beginning.
Better yet, make it a mission to see live theater. My generation (I feel in my twenties but saw her in 1989 as a young 23 year old) were blessed with some of the greatest musicals, concerts and shows. Working in London before moving to the US. I made it a mission to catch multiple shows every month. From Pavarotti in the park, to David Bowie underground show, to Prince “last shows”, to Lea and Michael Ball. Seeing music and theater live is incomparable to anything else. You are in the moment.
"a cover of On My Own, this was sung by Samantha in the movie Les Miserables..." A cover done in 1995 of a performance in 2012. 😁😁 FYI, this performance by Lea Salonga was for the 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Mis. Samantha Banks did the same role in Broadway 15 years after.
TBH I am somewhat surprised, that as a UA-cam reviewer and someone who seems educated in the field of music study(based on your other videos), that you aren't familiar with Lea Salonga and/or Les Miserables.... Its similar to watching a makeup reviewer pull out a Mac product and saying "What is this thing they call a lipstick?" and "Anyone else here ever heard of Mac?"
LEA SALONGA is a WORLD RENOWNED FILIPINA stage actress and singer. she has performed KIM in Miss Saigon, EPONINE in Les Miserables and she is a TONY AWARD winner. she too is the voice of JASMINE in Aladdin.
Schnell, so glad to learn you had a great time celebrating the holidays with your family. Thanks for this reaction as I was not familiar with Lea Salonga. Sadly, I have not attended many theater performances, a true regret in my life. Lea is wonderful.
She played Kim in the original production of Miss Saigon in London....that was as a teenager....then the role in Les Miserables, and the various Disney projects.... One of the most accomplished Broadway performers and a Disney princess...
Lea Salonga was named by TIME Magazine last year as one of the most influential people in the world. She's a Tony awardee for her Broadway appearances in Miss Saigon, etc. The Philippines' pride.
Forget the movie! Watch the play, that's the original Les Mis. Lea Salonga is musical theatre superstar. Best actress awardee for both Tony and Lawrence Olivier musical theatre awards.
Hello, thanks for this lovely reaction. Her performance is literally the one and only ultimate reference piece of art! Such voice moves the Heart of God and leaves us breathless and speechless. Songs like these widen our hearts.
Geez, she's not "singing" she performing her lines in a singing fashion, that's why you don't see her "flaying" her hands.. You honestly need to know more about the music industry.
Morrisette's friend and idol Lea Salonga. She's also the original Mulan and Jamine(Aladin). Lea is possible the best technical singer on the planet; she also introduced Mori to Disney.
Pronounced LE-YA, she was the first Asian / filipino to play the role of Eponine and then Fantine. that performance was part of the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables and she was also a part of the 25th anniversary. She was the first KIM of Miss Saigon musical in westend and Broadway and had won the Tony. She also is the singing voice for 2 Disney Princesses, Jasmine and Mulan, less than a handful has this honor.
@@meredithchandler73 Filipinos pronounced it LE-YA and Lea is a Filipino, in our language tagalog, we syllabicate, our vowels are short vowels. Our E's in elephant, egg, bed.
As has been pointed out, this was taken from the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables - pretty much the dream cast of the English version of the musical at that time. Take a moment to listen to Russel Crowe's performance of "Stars" from the 2012 movie, then come back to the 10th anniversary concert and see Philip Quast deliver a masterclass in how to sing the role of Javert.
Lea is the Pride of the Philippines. The Icon, a living legend. She is a theater superstar. Her version of On My Own is the Gold Standard. She also later played Fantine in the 25th anniversary of Les Mis and sang I Dreamed a Dream, you should react to that performance as well. The only Two time Disney Princess, a Tony and Olivier award winning performer as the Original Kim in Miss Saigon. React to her performance of I’d give my life for you. Lea Salonga Regine Velazquez Morissette Amon Jona Viray Katrina Velarde KZ Tandigan Klarisse De Guzman Rachelle Ann Go Sarah Geronimo 4th Impact are just some of the amazing singers from the Philippines that you should checkout.
I just listed my favorites. There are so many to list from the Philippines. Aegis, Frenchy, Sharon, Sarah, etc. we would probably be here all day trying to list them all. But feel free to add more.
I didnt used to be impressed by Leah Salonga till I compared this performance of hers with other performers. Then I realized how great she really is. Outstanding! Just outstanding!
You will love the 10th anniversary concert from which this came from. Most people consider this as the dream cast since it has all the powerhouse actors cast for this, and there is no throwaway performance in it--you can pick any performance there to review and each would be a solid performance done. You definitely have to see the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables as it is until today the gold standard for the musical.
The movie is excellent, but I think you will enjoy it more if you are familiar with the play before you do. This performance is from the 10th anniversary dream cast of Les Miserables. You will never hear better singers in the parts. I think that Lea's performance in this video is considered to be the quintessential performance of Eponine singing "One My Own." By the way -- Lea plays Fantine in the 25th Anniversary concert.
The original singer of the song "ON MY OWN " is Lea Salonga, in the theatrical play "Les Miserables" The movie you are referring to is a cinematic adoptation of the musical play. You should do research before making comments so as not to confuse peaple.
Nice reaction! . . .Lea Salonga is a legendary Filipino artist. She is the top of the food chain among Filipino singers. And the singer in Princess Jasmine of Aladdin and Mulan. (A Walt Disney Classics) Les Miserablesk (coming from Victor Hugo's novel in 1862) is a theatrical play recognized worldwide that has been played not just in universities but also considered a big event. And the screening process is stringent. (pls. watch how lea was selected in the role). Movies was also made for this, and it's beautiful) I think the proper pronunciation is Lay-Mis-Sir-Rob. Thank you.
She auditioned as Kim of Miss Saigon and hope you watch her videos till end. Anyway she is a legendary in musical theater. Thank you for your amazing comments, to the TNT Boys and Leah Salonga. Please do some comments to Elha Nimfa's "chandelier" and Gigi de Lana "yesterday when i was young". God bless.
This performance was from the Les Misérables 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. She has portrayed Éponine in the play, being the first Asian actress to perform the role on Broadway. She’s a Tony Award and Laurence Olivier winner for her Broadway and West End stints performing the lead character in Miss Saigon. She’s also the singing voice of Jasmine in Aladdin as well as Mulan.
Welcome to the masterclass in everything theatre. Lea was the original Kim in Miss Saigon at the age of 17. She won a Tony for that work. React to her in the Manila performance of Ms Saigon: ua-cam.com/video/cwB3Zxh2gSE/v-deo.html
Lea still songs all over the world she's the best Musical Theater singer from the Philippines and sang for Disney also. Lea speaks highly of Morrisett Amon.
she is the original voice for Disneys Mulan and for Yasmin in Aladdin (and other) also she is the original Kim in Miss Saigon. I have seen the movie (based on the stage version) but it was not my taste. I rather prefer the stage version which I have seen several times in London and Germany
Lea Salonga is a gift to Broadway and West End. She is the winner of the prestigious Sir Laurence Olivier in London’s West End for a leading role in a musical for her portrayal as the original Kim in one of the most controversial musical of all time Miss Saigon. She went on to duplicate her portrayal as Kim in the original production of Miss Saigon in Broadway New York and again won the Tony Award for a leading role in a musical. She is the original singing voices of a whole New World from the famous animated movie Aladdin and another Disney movie “Mulan” where she is again the singing voice of that movie. Disney awarded her the Disney Legend Award for singing the voices of these two legendary movie. And the list is on and on. You need a year to read her musical and theatrical achievements, just visit her website and for sure you will be amazed👌
Well, not the original. The role was originated (in the English version) by Frances Ruffelle. But it was certantly before the movie :) and yes, she's amazing!
Schnell, Miserables in French is pronounced Miz-air-ah-bles......in English, it translates to "the miserable ones"....in French, it is "the wretched ones" I would highly recommend watching the entire 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables.
Hi my friend I think you will find this young lady is amazing and has done many different things a new young gentleman taking UA-cam by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
Leah Salonga played Eponine in the Broadway Musical, “Les Miserables.” Hence, she does cover this song. Samantha may have sang this for the movie but Leah was the actress in this Broadway Musical. She is a multi awarded artist. She won the Tony Award for her portrayal as Kim in Miss Saigon and in London, the Lawrence Olivier Award.
Schnell, may I respectfuuly suggest that, when reacting to a new artist, you use Google to get some backgound of the artist. I'm an old Aussie but I have known Lea for years.
Lea set a very high bar for Filipino singers, please check Music travel love,it’s 2 Canadian singers ft Anthony Uy How deep is your love,it’s a collaboration of Canadian and Filipino artists that features nice view of both countries
Disneys hall of fame leah sang twice for them A WHOLE NEW WORLD /REFLECTION.... a filipina icon to be proud of.... Check her with RACHEL ANN GO,,, A MOVIE IN MY MIND....
there are things that might well be called ' required listening' or watching. the DVD of the '10 th Anniversary of LesMis.' is one. - every performer is great , will be one of your best 3 hr watches. in the same vein, totally different - the original ' Woodstock' film.....
Thanks for the RV. To your intro, I don't think Lea did the cover of this song which Samantha Barks sang. Rather, I think you can say it's the other way around... ;)
Yeah that annoyed me! Seeing as by the time the film came out Les Mis had been running for 27 years and this was 17 years before the film came out! To reduce the 10th anniversary artists to covers is a bit disrespectful and I would have hoped more research would have been done first. Especially when a lot of them were OG London cast members!
Lea Salonga is the a modern legend of musical theater. She is also a judge in The Voice Philippines. In one year, she did not select Morissette Amon for her team. LS reasoned that the voice of Morissette Amon fit better with Sarah Geronimo. This performance. LS sounds great! 😀

"a cover of On My Own, this was sung by Samantha in the movie Les Miserables..."
A cover done in 1995 of a performance in 2012. 😁😁
FYI, this performance by Lea Salonga was for the 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Mis.
She didn't even know who is DAVID FOSTER who is so well known in USA and CANADA,how much more to Lea....
Lea Salonga is the one who sang a whole new world. And reflection from the movie mulan
Wow guys thank you for appreciating our very own legend of the Philippines Lea Salonga one of world famous dramatic singer
LEA SALONGA is a WORLD RENOWNED FILIPINA stage actress and singer. she has performed KIM in Miss Saigon, EPONINE in Les Miserables and she is a TONY AWARD winner. she too is the voice of JASMINE in Aladdin.
A maasterclass perfomance. I understand that this vid is a teaching resource for all Les Mis students, even now after so many years.
It's good to give theatre more attention. Sometimes it feels like it gets overlooked.
Breath control, range, emotion, musicality, Lea has it all. She is tye epitome of disney princesses.
Lea Salonga is a West End and Broadway musical theatre goddess. She has won both Tony and Lawrence Olivier awards for best performance.
Lea Salonga is phenomenal👏👏👏Thank u again Schnell, for sharing this wonderful episode...
She's the True Disney Princess indeed!
Whaaat? Out of all our singers. You have never heard of Lea Salonga? 😅🤣🤣 😁 she's on the top of the top. A legend in comparison to the other singers.
Hello, thanks for this lovely reaction. Her performance is literally the one and only ultimate reference piece of art! Such voice moves the Heart of God and leaves us breathless and speechless. Songs like these widen our hearts.
She is a legend. You should look her up more.
The full orchestra accompaniment just puts the icing on this performance..
Legend Disney princess ❤️
Pronounced LE-YA, she was the first Asian / filipino to play the role of Eponine and then Fantine. that performance was part of the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables and she was also a part of the 25th anniversary. She was the first KIM of Miss Saigon musical in westend and Broadway and had won the Tony. She also is the singing voice for 2 Disney Princesses, Jasmine and Mulan, less than a handful has this honor.
Pronounced LAY-ah (like Princess Leia from Star Wars).
@@meredithchandler73 Filipinos pronounced it LE-YA and Lea is a Filipino, in our language tagalog, we syllabicate, our vowels are short vowels. Our E's in elephant, egg, bed.
I was amazed of her facial expressions the song ends and still her face not smiling iiww i love it
As has been pointed out, this was taken from the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables - pretty much the dream cast of the English version of the musical at that time.
Lea Salonga
Regine Velazquez
Morissette Amon
Jona Viray
Katrina Velarde
KZ Tandigan
Klarisse De Guzman
Rachelle Ann Go
Sarah Geronimo
4th Impact
are just some of the amazing singers from the Philippines that you should checkout.
Why didn't you include Jaya and Lani. They are part of the original Vocal Trinity of the Philippines.
I just listed my favorites. There are so many to list from the Philippines. Aegis, Frenchy, Sharon, Sarah, etc. we would probably be here all day trying to list them all. But feel free to add more.
Gigi de Lana and others
Lea is different class.Dont Cry For Me Argentina would be good to do next.Thans Stuart
I didnt used to be impressed by Leah Salonga till I compared this performance of hers with other performers. Then I realized how great she really is. Outstanding! Just outstanding!
?
You will love the 10th anniversary concert from which this came from. Most people consider this as the dream cast since it has all the powerhouse actors cast for this, and there is no throwaway performance in it--you can pick any performance there to review and each would be a solid performance done. You definitely have to see the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables as it is until today the gold standard for the musical.
The movie is excellent, but I think you will enjoy it more if you are familiar with the play before you do.
This performance is from the 10th anniversary dream cast of Les Miserables. You will never hear better singers in the parts. I think that Lea's performance in this video is considered to be the quintessential performance of Eponine singing "One My Own."
By the way -- Lea plays Fantine in the 25th Anniversary concert.
Great reaction! Love Lea's performance. She's a legend!
The original singer of the song "ON MY OWN " is Lea Salonga, in the theatrical play "Les Miserables" The movie you are referring to is a cinematic adoptation of the musical play. You should do research before making comments so as not to confuse peaple.
Lea Salonga started it all in the Philippines she's our pride.
Tony Award winner and Lawrence Olivier Award winner for her “Kim” in Miss Saigon. The original “KIM” both in the West End in London & Broadway.
Nice reaction! . . .Lea Salonga is a legendary Filipino artist. She is the top of the food chain among Filipino singers. And the singer in Princess Jasmine of Aladdin and Mulan. (A Walt Disney Classics)
Les Miserablesk (coming from Victor Hugo's novel in 1862) is a theatrical play recognized worldwide that has been played not just in universities but also considered a big event. And the screening process is stringent. (pls. watch how lea was selected in the role). Movies was also made for this, and it's beautiful)
I think the proper pronunciation is Lay-Mis-Sir-Rob.
That's why you can't spell CLEAR without LEA. Legend!
she is LITERALLY a Disney Princess the singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan
Lea Salonga played Eponine and Fontine in Les Misérables on Broadway way before it was a movie. She was also the original Miss Saigon (on Broadway)
Lea didn't cover it, she performed it in the actual West End production. She played Eponine and Fantine, the first Asian to ever do so.
Lea salonga is my favorite singer here in the phillipines.🇵🇭❤️👍pls.try to react" dont cry for me argentina"by lea salonga.🙏
Lea is the original. Not a cover. She is phenomenal
Well, not the original. The role was originated (in the English version) by Frances Ruffelle. But it was certantly before the movie :) and yes, she's amazing!
Lea is the only Filipino (and Asian) Tony Awardee & most famous singer & Broadway artist...
Must watch her Don't Cry for Me Argentina.
A real Disney princess from the Philippines...
Lea Salonga is a Tony award and Olivier award winner for her role as Kim in Miss Saigon in 1989
Schnell, Miserables in French is pronounced Miz-air-ah-bles......in English, it translates to "the miserable ones"....in French, it is "the wretched ones"
I would highly recommend watching the entire 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables.
Lea salonga is a Filipina she's done a lot of musical like aladintheme song whole new world, and a lot more
Hi my friend I think you will find this young lady is amazing and has done many different things a new young gentleman taking UA-cam by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
I’m utterly amazed when I find a person who has no idea who lea is
It's not an Effin Movie. Its LIVE THEATRE!
You need to react when she was 18 yrs old auditioning for Miss Saigon. At the time she had a Bristish accent.
There's something in the water in the Philippines.
Schnell, may I respectfuuly suggest that, when reacting to a new artist, you use Google to get some backgound of the artist. I'm an old Aussie but I have known Lea for years.
You knew no one else does it like Lea.
She is the BEST- period. She is not only a two-time Disney princess (Jasmine and Mulan), she became a Disney Legend in 2011.
The first Asian won for TONY award - Leah Salonga
I h eard this 3 or 4 years ago. I found it to be theatrical. I think she belongs in the theater In musicals.
Thank you ❤️🇵🇭
there are things that might well be called ' required listening' or watching. the DVD of the '10 th Anniversary of LesMis.' is one. - every performer is great , will be one of your best 3 hr watches. in the same vein, totally different - the original ' Woodstock' film.....
Check her Don’t Cry for me Argentina and Via Dolorosa
Hello Schnell. Love your 2023 look 😍
She is a Filipina and a legend singer before Regine, Charice and Morissette. She sang A Whole New World and Reflection. She is well- known in Mulan.
Love your video reaction cutie
Hi Alien, nice to see you back.❤❤❤
