    The TCM puts out a small reference voltage on the backup light bulb power circuit. When the vehicle is not in reverse, the TCM expects this voltage to be pulled to ground through the closed windings of the bulbs. If the bulbs are blown, the wrong style, or the circuit has a problem, the TCM assumes the vehicle is in reverse.

    This video just saved me at least $5,000. Took my Versa to the dealer and they said it needed a full transmission replacement. I watched this video and connected the dots to the after market backup camera I had installed. The knuckleheads who installed the camera did a terrible job and left the wire open to shorting out. A quick repair of their work, and the car is not throwing the error anymore.
    Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this.

  • @AlienBros
    @AlienBros 3 роки тому +20

    Just started the video. Had one of these a couple months ago with the same code. The one I was working on needed the tailights replaced. There is a circut in I think the drivers side tailight that gets corroded in these when the tailights crack and cause transmission range sensor codes. It's weird. That's what the fix was for the one I did though. Also note they don't 100% have to be visibly cracked to have corrosion on that chip. Old bulbs cause it too.
    Edit* finally got to the point in the video with the bulb. Yes the bulb not making contact will short that circut and trigger that code. You had it right.

    Nissan's are always difficult, but this video is very important in diagnosing a fault that could be flagged due to a problem in the parallel circuit, the code description kind of said it (in hidden word's) that if the TCM see's two command's at the same time for 5 seconds, it would set the P0705, but what a great video looking forward to the follow-up video👍

    I am a Mitsubishi Technician, this is a very common problem with Jatco cvt Jf015. Danner, only replace the bulb's with an original Nissan part number and the cvt will work fine. The Jatco control unit evaluate the amps bulb in all conditions, when the brake is press and depress, when you put reverse, neutral, drive or low, if the amp is not right the control unit set a code and in some cases the cvt set in limp mode. Many technicians from Nissan or Mitsubishi replaced the cvt by warranty claim but in many cases the warranty claim is rejected and the dealer pay for that cvt, regards from Mexico Danner!

It had very slight wear, and very, very light corrosion on the tip contact. So, I cleaned it up with a piece of emery cloth. Put it back in. Both were bright. I cleared the code. It was still showing after one trip to town about 8 miles away and back. But, after another trip,the code is gone. I NEVER would have guessed this was the problem. Back in the 1970's the only CVT around were the DAF transmissions on the small 340 Volvo's from their Dutch factory. These transmission used external rubber drive belts with variable pulleys. The transmiission was mounted in the rear of the car just ahead of the rear axle. The two external belts linked to very large vee pulleys on the left and right drive shafts. I went out to a house call on one with no drive. Put a rope on the car and moved it 10 yards only to have one of the pulleys fall off on to the road. Fix was simple only parts required were a new nut and locking washer.

    I hate Nissan's too for every reason you showed here! Wrong service info, and SLOOOOOW navigation with the Autel. I mean slower than dial-up internet slow! It's ridiculous. I dread whenever one of these shows up here, which thankfully isn't too often. I wouldn't own one if it were given to me! Headache central. I have enough trouble with my Silverado! My stainless Corsa cat back just cracked in half right at the flex joint yesterday. Literally one thing after another with that toilet. Installed a new transmission a few months back after losing 3rd and 4th. Just turned 106k miles on the way home. Guess I can't complain too much - got 14 years, 104k out of that exhaust system.

My first job was for Saturn that had HUGE problems with CVT transmissions (like all cars with CVT transmissions) and they had us replacing the internals. If you look at the factory diagram the reverse lights and the input to the TCM are all tied together. All the rear lights share the same grounds left and right side. So it makes sense to me that if you had a ground issue either on the left or the right tail lamp/ stop lamps circuits as well as a short in the rear lighting circuits that would show a system voltage to the tcm.

I had a nissan sentra came to me after 3 transmission with the last one being a crate from Nissan with the same problem the car is in limp mode, no codes any where on the car except a code for a brake light switch the tests on the switch shows everything ok, so I moved on to the brake lights them selves sure enough the power gets back there but the bulbs burned notice I said bulbS both, since there is no relation I moved on to other tests with no luck. so I decided to ship it. but as gesture of good faith I decided to replace the bulbs. viola the problem is solved yes the transmission issue is solved!!!!! it turned out they put a program line that if both bulbs are out you are not safe to be on the road so they shut you down.

      Bulletin is 100 percent credible. Manufacturers go out of their way to avoid publishing TSBs unless its a legit issue, so when one goes public...you can be damn sure it is legit. Doesn't mean a tsb always relates to the exact situation on the vehicle you're working on..but if it is published as a tsb, it should be step 1 in your diag. And if the diag confirms the tsb but the tsb has you replace a part with same non updated part... then its time for experienced based fix. Don't let the engineers parts cannon shoot you in the ass 😎

    My parents 2014 SV sedan set a P0705. The symptom was poor acceleration and engine speed wouldn't rise above 1800 RPM or so. Happened while driving on a sunny day. The P0705 appears to put the car into a limp home mode, where the CVT isn't allowed to change pulley position. When I was plugging in the ODB scanner, the trunk opened. I thought it was just the key in my pocket getting pressed. It happened again today when nobody had either key set. I put the car in reverse (engine not running) and went to close the trunk, noticed the reverse lights weren't on, but they came on when the trunk was closed (I believe the jolt of closing the trunk completed a faulty connection somewhere). I test drove the car a second time after I closed the trunk and pulled the code, the problem was still present, but quickly resolved itself. It hasn't reappeared since. The gear indicator on the dash works fine, the tail lamp assemblies are completely corrosion free. My current theory is that there's a faulty connection between the TRS and tail lamp assembly somewhere in the harness inside the car. Either that or the reverse bulbs or tail lamp grounds are faulty.

    Continuously variable transmission. Basically a pair of inward facing cones for input and another for output and a high strength belt connecting them. the input cones move apart and the output cones move together so that the belt is on a smaller part of the input side cones and bigger part of output side cones to increase gear ratio. Since it can be at any points on the cones, it doesnt have set ratios, itll just slide continuously, slightly increasing the ratio the whole time.

    I don't know why manufacturers use those printed circuit boards on tail lamps or anywhere else on a car. GM used those on their pickups for years and had problems with them. I remember an instructor saying to me one time that for those to be effective the margin of error in manufacturing them has to be zero, in other words, probably won't happen. I like how that chart at 12:27 says two or more signals simultaneously stay on continuously. I'm surprised they didn't also say at the same time, 🤣.

      Thanks - I was just going to post the same thing. Only thing I'd add is, it's like a 10-speed bicycle in the way it works, only without set gears to engage. When your pedal sprocket is big and the wheel sprocket is small, you haul ass and pedal slowly, but can't climb hills very well. When the pedal sprocket is small and the wheel sprocket big, you pedal fast and go slow, but are able to climb steep hills with a heavy load with minimal effort. You can think of automotive, snowmobile, and ATV CVTs as infinitely variable 10-speed bicycles with no gears.

    Hello @ScannerDanner. So what happened to the car? Did the CEL came back on after you replaced the reverse light bulb? Did the bulb replacement fixed the problem? I dont want to replace the tail lamp assembly yet, maybe cleaning the contacts and replacing the bulb will solve the issue

  • @ScannerDanner
    @ScannerDanner  3 роки тому

    1. I should have had the reverse lights on when I unbolted that assembly. A few of you mentioned a bad ground and that was a possibility. I think? But I have to look at the other lights (parking, brake and turn), if they share that same ground for the reverse light, then this absolutely was not a bad ground, at least not externally (wiring or connector). There would have been other lighting issues! (SEE EDIT BELOW)
    2. Some others suggested that I prove the code by jumping the reverse light circuit. This is a good suggestion and I even mentioned doing something along those lines. I chose not to because I was dealing with incorrect diagrams and I made the mistake of taking that bulb out before ever taking a voltage reading on that bulb smh. So jumping things, I know the code is going to set. This is a legit TSB, that was never in question.
    3. It's been 5 or 6 weeks since the bulbs were replaced with no issues. So I'm calling it a fix.
    Wish I would have done some voltage checks on that circuit board WHILE the bulb was dim!! I'm sorry I did not and we are all left with questions 😪
    EDIT!!! @Chris Wey mentioned about when the brake, turn and parking lights are on, with a bad (slightly in this case) ground will increase voltage on the reverse light circuit, causing a drive and reverse signal (and code) at the same time. If this housing only has one ground, this could absolutely be a condition! Maybe the dim bulb was a coincidence and me just moving the housing "fixed the bad ground (temporarily)
    🤬🤬🤬 sorry guys. Feeling like a jack weed here. Time will tell

    • @phareztrinimand
      @phareztrinimand 3 роки тому

      Good thinking but if the brake turn,park are on and voltage increase it still can`t show 2 gears on, because even tho it has voltage at reverse back feeding, the voltage would have no where to go because the pnp switch isn`t closing that circuit to relay that to the computer, the pnp can only select one gear at a time, so you might see some voltage back feeding but the lever isn`t connecting that circuit to the computer.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 роки тому

      @@phareztrinimand remember the diagram was wrong! The reverse light circuit is tied into the signal wire that goes to the computer. So the range switch will be sending the signal that it is in drive and the elevated voltage on the reverse light circuit would be sending a false reverse signal.
      Also remember that even though it is a 12v signal, the internal threshold will be much lower than that, to trigger a reverse signal recognition. Hope that makes sense.
      I'm not saying this is what is was, as you would most likely have other lighting issues (dim bulbs, fast blinking turn signal etc.) But it is plausible.

    tail lamp assembly water intrusion, first thing I think of? it's corrodes and bridges tail to brake filaments enough to back-feed the brake switch circuit and trigger the codes, possible while coasting a long ways off highway ramp/downhill
    ** watching further and seeing the corrosion location in photo's, it could be tail/brake back-feeding the reverse or tail/reverse back-feeding the brake circuit or more then one being back-fed via poor ground! (assuming connector is at bottom of those lamp assemblies) which it kind of looked that way by amount of traces.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 3 роки тому

      also. poor bulb to housing ground could allow tail to brake circuit back-feeding, assuming the brake switch directly feeds the bulbs and TCM/BCM/ECM. I forget what the diagram claimed or lied about now. multitasking lol
      and now thinking further, a simple bad filament inside brake/tail bulb could break off the ground side and bridge together, again back-feeding the brake circuit.
      **also filaments sagged and touching in a shared tail/brake bulb.
      really a big can of worms there, but that's the stupid things which my mind figures out pretty fast when I focus on it, but you cannot win them all in a hurry!

    The wiring to the AV module could also have an intermittent short to power as a means to cause the TCM to see voltage at the wrong time. Is there a backup camera connector flapping in the weather or is there a camera installed? They don't say what the threshold voltage is for the TCM to sense the line has been raised. Is it the full 12v or anything above say 3v? I wondered if the bad connection series resistance on the left bulb couldn't create a ghost voltage situation, but can't see how the right bulb wouldn't be an effective pull-down path even with a lifted ground on the left.

  • @toddhorting4419

    At 25:10 the left light was definitely dimmer. I believe you had a short feeding another light in the harness. Possible cause was pinched wires from a previous bulb change. All the time I was shouting at the TV for you to check the connector on the back of each lamp cluster.
    No matter what brand, they're notorious for burning up the ground connection as the stamped part of the cluster is galvanised steel whereas the harness connector is brass or similar.
    Direction of current flow, sum of current from all lamps, a little moisture and you get accelerated corrosion then they melt due to high current through a high resistance.
    My guess is fault sets when direction indicators and brake lights are on at the same time.
    What does it need to see a high? Maybe only 5 Volts on a 12V circuit?
