The Pilot Watch That Helped Save The World - 1 Year With My Greatest Omega - CK2292 Review & History

  • Today's video is extra special. After over a year of ownership I discuss why my WW2 Omega CK2292 is not only the greatest Omega watch I have ever owned, but also one of the world's best pilot watches ever made.
I discuss its history in depth and look at how it compares to other more iconic Omega Pilot watches of its day. Where does it fit in next to the more lusted after waterproof CK2444 and the CK2129 watch that was famously worn by Tom Hardy in the epic Christopher Nolan directed movie Dunkirk? Why has the CK2292 lasted so long in my collection, unlike the many Seamasters and Speedmasters that have come and gone?
Join me on a rather personal, inspiring, and essential journey into a largely forgotten era that really was Omega's finest hour.

Excellent history lesson and Omega tribute. In my University class I teach that it is the Brits that won the war due to their fantastic development of critical technologies and strategies. Us Americans certainly helped, but the British resilience was key to it all.

Sorry chaps and chapettes, very slight error @7:39 These movements operated at 18,000 VPH. For some reason, that I can only attribute to my dyslexic brain, I said "eighteen hundred" and not "thousand". Not the first time I have done that. SMH.
    Oh well, KBO!!! :D

Well done The Urban Gentry old boy. More of this please sir. The background sorting sounds matched the tone of your voice making this video easy to sink into and quickly find how fast 20 something minutes can fly. I can't imagine the research, preparation, practice, and editing this must have taken. This is amazing. I would love to have a series dedicating time to understand the history both styling as well as importance.
    Thanks mate. Cheers!

I felt as if I were dropped into that time period! That is an absolutely gorgeous watch! I’ve always wanted a vintage piece, but I don’t think I’ll ever be that lucky to find one with that much history, and importance. Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I understand what that Omega means to you.

“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
Lesser, cowardly men always acquiesce to evil and assault true leaders - they call them crazy; ill-equipped, drunkards, etc. It happened to Churchill, saw them do it to Reagan and Thatcher, and they’re still at it today.
    Very interesting…nice RAF tribute TGV!

Yes, TGV, loved it. Also appreciated the heartfelt narrative and footage of the veterans. The feeling of just holding one of the vintage RAF issues must be difficult to describe in mere words. My first Swiss piece (still have it) is a vintage Seamaster circa '68 on original mesh band. Picked it up it back in the 80's at the long standing Sunday Antique Bazaar, Avenida Mexico/Chapultepic, near the Universidad De Guadalajara. Con Respeto y Admiracion, JP Davis

From what I've read, the Weems bezel was invented because watch movements were non-hacking at the time. It was not for timing minutes, but was instead to allow synchronizing to the second with another time source, e.g. radio signals. It became obsolete once hacking movements were available.

Great intro and an even better story. Loved this Saturday “Spitfire watch” historical account. What a treat!

    Hi TGV
Very good historical investigation. I learned a lot about the wartime Omegas here😊
I’ve just finished reading a book about RAF, US and Luftwaffe planes shot down over my country (-Denmark). Fascinating and horrible at the same time. More than 2000 planes got lost even in this relatively quiet area in WW2. That says a bit about the scale of this war...
Your excellent WW2 watch is wonderful, on the edge of being too much when it comes to patina - but exactly not being too much. A real historical timepiece, I fully understand you being proud of it.
Really fine work from you as always - keep up the good work👍

3 years later and I still come back to this video every once in a while. In my opinion, one of your best masterpieces for this channel, hands down.
Can't deny I was a little shocked when you announced you sold the watch after saying you'd own it until you "joined those spitfires in the skies", but well, I guess it's the collectors life, right?
Regarding me, I was also lucky to acquire a CK2292 for around 1k€ and I can't avoid feeling nostalgic every time I look at it. And I believe a lot of that has to do with this video of yours.
Congrats for still getting all of us hooked to your videos so many years later. I believe you're one of the greatest influences in keeping this hobby alive and in good health over the years.

I throughly enjoy all the videos you make TGV, Bravo my friend! I can confidently say, it is because of you that my interest in watches grew and now I have long term goals of obtaining an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, a Rolex Explorer II or a Submariner or both who knows! :)
But I have discovered other amazing watches and brands that have such a huge horological history behind them like Seiko, Timex, Zeppelin, Hamilton and countless others and it just gives me such great satisfaction knowing that in each watch there's a piece of history that I'm holding and has its own special meaning. So thank you my friend for all your hard work! - AR

Beautiful example you have. It baffles me why omega doesn't reissue these 3 watches with modern movements and perhaps a more contemporary size.. Not that much larger, perhaps a 36mm.

I really like these videos where you bring history and story telling into it. Brings a deeper dimension to watches. Would like to see more vids like this. Also tied into design trends of an era
