  • One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is what watch do I recommend for a first luxury Swiss watch? Today I share my top choice and personal favourite. In this video I discuss 5 key reasons why buying an Omega Seamaster on the used market is a great place to start. No matter if it is a 1950s/60s Mad Men style piece or the 90s James Bond icon, the Seamaster packs a hell of a lot for as low as $500 to $3000 and upwards.

      Garrett Rodden / 500 lb closer to 800 or 900 US dollars I think. That is very low still to get A James Bond Seamaster. Mine was bought in the 90s Auto with wave face. It is worth many thousands now. I regret selling it when I went through a divorce. It only went up in value and liked it better than the Submariner I also had. I moved on and love Panerai now.

    When I started working in 1968, I was earning around $100 per month. Around the corner from my office was an store selling Omegas. I used my first paycheck to pay $65 for an Omega Gevene Chronostop divers watch. It had the 12 o'clock marker where the 3 o'clock usually is. It came with a corfram strap which I did not like, so I bought the mesh bracelet for $60 with my next paycheck.
    I wore this watch until 1992 when I replaced it with a Seamaster Polaris Multifunction to celebrate surviving a heart event.
    Today I have a classic Seamaster 2254 and a Speedy MOTM

    Around 02/03' I saw Die Another Day, that moment I knew I wanted Bond's seamaster. Probably was in 2nd grade at the time but I was mesmerized by the craftsmanship and elegance of the whole thing. With my parents being Rolex and Cartier folks they knew what a fine timepiece was and promised to gift me one when I graduated college. Last year I finally received my BA degree and walked during commencement. Shook the dean's hand, while holding my degree with my Seamaster Diver 300 Coaxial 41mm on the wrist.

    My first luxury watch was a Seamaster Chronograph bought in 2000. A great watch. I use it for flying now. The red hands show up very well against the blue face making it easy for my 51 year old eyes to see the elapsed time while in flight.
    Peace.

    Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your channel. I've been a one watch guy with a Seiko 5 for over ten years until I recently inherited a vintage Red Submariner. I immediately began researching the watch and the more I learned the more fascinated I became. Along the way I've kept coming back to your channel time and again and I've realized that I must have a bit of a thing for mechanical movements. it's the reason I specifically purchased a Seiko 5 nearly ten years ago(they weren't exactly easy to find in the USA back then.) You've inspired me to purchase an SKX009 and deliberately start a collection. Keep up the fantastic work. I'm glad to be a subscriber.

    20 years ago I bought my 1st quality watch , a speedmaster reduced (still love that timepiece) at the time i looked at a Seamaster but my budget could not go that far, time rolls on and i now have a modest collection that includes a Datejust and a few other maybe not so expensive but to me interesting watches. Yesterday I finally pulled the pin and ordered a 41mm Seamaster 300 , I cannot wait for it to arrive .

    Hi, my second "real" watch was the Omega Seamaster 2537.80.00 40th anniversary 007 Bond watch. I still have it, and it is still my favorite. As you mentioned, the feeling you get when first putting it on, you do not forget. It has weight to it, it feels like you're wearing something special and luxurious, and for me at least it is very comfortable on the wrist. I never plan on selling this one, and hope to add another Seamaster in black.

      I'm doing the same for a Grand Seiko Spring Drive Diver. The "swiss made" tag says nothing to me compared with the accuracy and technical development. People won't recognize it as a very good piece? Well, maybe that's the second bigger appeal for me, I like to look as the average grey man but at the same time enjoy secretly a wonderful accurate time keeper. For the same reason I would never buy a Rolex Submariner, (less a homage).

    Great video as always. I actually just picked up my first Omega Seamaster a few weeks ago. I decided to go with the quartz movement blue wave that Pierce Brosnan wears in Goldeneye instead of the chronograph he switched to for the rest of his 007 movies. Goldeneye just has such a special place in my heart I thought it appropriate to get the quartz instead, though I prefer automatic movements. Unfortunately I had to get it serviced by Omega, which is where it is now, and they are performing some repairs due to some dishonesty by the seller, but nothing that depreciates its value, in general, or to me. I fell in love with my father's (an old gold Seamaster), and I'm now in love with mine, so I could not agree more with you.

    I use the diving bezel quite a lot, usually for cooking, not having a stopwatch available, or not using your phone to have your hands free, it just works wonderfully! A diver is the best all round watch, and the seamaster is simply a great entry piece. I love Rolex more than Omega, mostly for the in house movements, but I would not mind a seamaster 300.

    A contemporary seamaster is a great first watch. My personal favourite is the 2254.50. I would say though that if you have your heart set on a particular piece that is similar but perhaps more expensive (possibly a sub) then it really is worth saving because if you give in by buying a piece that is more affordable than what you truly want, you're really just delaying gratification.

    Midsize Seamaster was my first luxury watch, my wife bought it as an engagement present for me in 2001. I now also have a Rolex "Hulk" But the Omega is still worn every week and is my go to watch for holidays and sports. Had a wobble about the size being too small a few years back but now I really appreciate it (I have very small wrists).

    The only thing about buying an Omega for $500: plan on it needing a service, and Omega/Swatch group charging you 600-800 for it, at which point you might have more into it than it's worth...it may or may not be worth it to you, but factor that in.

He did a vid on alternatives for the $8000+ Breitling Navitimer; one of his recommendations - the Seiko Flightmaster. Tristano wears a Flighty, and so do I. It's a terrific watch. The 371(413 on rubber) is also a terrific watch, and an affordable alternative for a $3000 Omega.
      And dress divers are cool... at ALL price points.

    I would pick one up for $500 in a heartbeat. But for the price you actually pay for these watches I am not at all convinced this is the best choice for a first luxury watch. To each his own, but kind of a boring choice really. There is a pitfall in being too hung up on value for money and watches that are the darlings of the watch community. You can easily be talked into watches that don't speak to you, and talk yourself out of buying the watch that you really want. But watches are emotion and pure personal preference. Not everyone loves the same things. I for one could not care less about the Bond product placement.
    I am always a bit skeptical when people just into watches are showing of their SKX's, and a few years later down the line showing their Seamasters. I can't know for sure, but you wonder. Is that what you really want? Or were you convinced to buy those? Best advice I ever got was to not buy a watch you have never seen in real life. Easy as that.

    Ok, let's just get one thing straight here... Omega is NOT a real luxury brand. It's a mid-high mass, an entry level to the bigger brands. That's not to say there aren't great Omega watches (my personal fave is the Planet Ocean 600M that I wear often), but lets's call a spade a spade...

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC 6 років тому +6

      + Privet By what criteria did you reach the conclusion that "Omega is not a real luxury brand"? I have no horse in this race, but I'm seeing similar apparently arbitrary comments about other brands here.

    • @OutdoorsIQ
      @OutdoorsIQ 5 років тому +4

      I feel Omega is luxury. It’s a watch that goes beyond the simple function of telling the time. Which to me is what makes a watch luxury. If a mass market is willing to pay thousands of dollars more to complete the same task, for a name, for a style then that is luxury. By my definition. Here’s the actual definition: “an indulgence in something that provides pleasure, satisfaction, or ease” - Merriam Webster

    My first luxury automatic was an Omega midsize Seamaster Diver purchased in the late 90's. Several years ago I had it serviced and the watchmaker told me that it had an ETA movement. Not fully understanding what he meant, I thought maybe my Seamaster was a less desirable watch. After getting more information from this channel and elsewhere on the internet, I've learned that the ETA movement is the norm for my watch and nothing to sneer at. Now I have a renewed appreciation for my Seamaster and once again it's become my favorite watch. Thank You.
