    Flour sacks were decorated specifically to be used by housewives sew. I have a quilt my grandmother made of flour sacks, and they were nice quailty fabric. That makes sense because a loosely woven fabric would not hold flour well.

    • @revelationquilts
      @revelationquilts  6 місяців тому +8

      Great point - plus they were so pretty. When flour companies found out that women were using them for quilts, they started making them pretty. Somewhere I saw a great documentary on this subject.

      My dad told about going with my granddad to get flour that his mom always used to make towels. When the companies started printing overall prints they had to get certain ones she requested. The companies also printed actual pattern pieces for children's clothes to be cut out and seen but they were for young kids and dad and his brother were older. Just saying.

      Flour sacks were made a lot better than some of our fabrics today, that is for sure!

    I commented on the video when you bought these bandanas that they can be disappointingly thin and coarsely woven when the sizing is washed out, but that I was sure you'd come up with a way to make something beautiful out of them. Looks like your bandanas are better fabric than mine were, and you've certainly come up with an ingenious way to use them! I really like the way you"ve cut and recombined them to retain the overall circular design. You've got two unusual and colourful quilts there. Bravo!

    • @revelationquilts
      @revelationquilts  6 місяців тому +3

      Thank you - they honestly aren't as thin as people are thinking. They will be good car/picnic/beach quilts. Can't beat the price.

    No border. I use the web technique when I do disappearing 9 patches to make sure they get sewn in the place I intend them to go. I just never knew that it was called that. The second round is a brilliant way to make 9 patches. Think small squares with a random effect or possibly ombre. Think postage stamp quilt. In whatever size you want you want the squares to be. Even could be a side project you work on with pieces leftover from a current quilting project. So much inspiration in one video. Thanks for sharing. PS: I just started this year using a spray starch before I press before I make the initial cuts. I was,and remain, impressed with the difference it makes. It’s a game changer if you’re using a less expensive fabric.

      Brilliant idea to echo the design - bandana/lace and use what you have. I'm curious how the bandanas held up to washing and use? I know our bandanas carried as hankies/sweat mops get softer and more wonderful, hopefully those used for quilting do the same?

    How fun! I love your creativity. Every time I walk by the Hobby Lobby aisle with all the colorful bandanas I admire them but wonder what to do with them. This is a great idea. It would make a great Comfy (charity) quilt for kids. And the bandanas are so soft when washed. Also can't wait to try the web method. I have a sewing room setup that's conducive to that. Thanks for sharing.

    Absolutely love these quilts. I think I might have used some stabilizer or interfacing on the back of these bandanas as they can be pretty thin. But beautiful non the less. I think a black border would be stunning.

    • @vareekinyanjui6119
      @vareekinyanjui6119 6 місяців тому

      I made a bandana quilt a few years ago. Some of the takeaways were that the bandanna was definitely not square. The biggest takeaway was to use stabilizer because the bandannas were definitely thin and did not hold up long. I will definitely make another with stabilizer.

    A good short note is copied here from the internet. "Facing a Quilt is a method of finishing the edge of a quilt. A strip of facing fabric is sewn to the front of a quilt and turned to the back so that none of the facing fabric shows on the front. A Facing provides an alternative to traditional binding." There are a few demonstrations on UA-cam but I found the best one is by Nancy at OnPoint-TV and Quilting with Nancy. She has one that is titled Facing A Quilt. I believe there are additional samples in later videos. I suggested facing because your quilts are complete in and of themselves. It is busy enough to let it be as is and can make the viewer look beyond what is there. At least that is how I saw them. Hope this helps.

      I wonder if using 50% of the bandanas the same colour and pairing with the multiple colours then cutting a churn dash block would be cool, too…I like the double layer cutting similar to a disappearing layers x-patch design and swapping fabric….perhaps if cut on angles more interesting blocks would result,..or what about using equilateral triangles and turning each triangle for a kaleidoscope effect…your work is so inspiring …love your creativity and clear instructions. Looking forward for more great ideas in 2024. 🎉🎉. 😊

    Clever idea! Love it! Making a ‘disappearing’ 25 patch would be interesting as well. There are several cutting choices that you could create-adapting disappearing 4 patch, hourglass etc-and you could keep the same pair together or swap it with other pairs.
    I’ve just subscribed, and ai’m looking forward to watching past & future videos!
    Stay well!

      Great point! I think there are so many possibilities with this. I thought about cutting diagonally as well.

    It's a great quilt top, however, do to the busy patterns and colors, I would go with a solid border, maybe even a solid sashing. So many options! Can't wait to see what you do.

    I prefer the version that is not so busy, with greater harmony. Nice work!
