My husband is a steel worker. I could get you some cool scrap to use. Maybe we could do a trade? Like a tiny paring knife for a box of cool scrap? lol
It would depend on the kind of steel.
@@JPsBladeworks what’s your preference
@@TarotLadyLissa high carbon steel
@@JPsBladeworksI would love to see a video of you making something from that scrap
@@xijinpig7978 chinese steel is trash
Badass looking blade, nice work!
About the paper test: I find it super useful when I'm sharpening knives because I can feel any impertfections or missed areas on the blade. As it slices through the paper the feel and sound of the slice will change if there are any tiny chips or anything like that that you can't see with the naked eye.
I always do a paper test to check my edge after i sharpen.
Truth: the finish work is the most difficult of almost ANY project. Forging gets the form but grinding and sanding get the fit and figure. 4-5 hours of hand sanding is no joke.
And that hand sanding just kills your hands. Im definitely going to have arthritis when im old at this rate.
Nakiri is my favorite knife in the kitchen. This one looks fantastic!
Thank you
That is gorgeous! Nice work!
Thank you
That's some beautiful work. Nicely done.
Thank you
On some of this kind of video, we are watching a master who has done it thousands of times. Often they have no running commentary on their process because there is no need, the results speak for it all. Those are inspirational in one way. This is inspirational in a different way. You are learning and explaining the process and what you are trying out. You don't have the perfect shop for your process so you explain the workaround. You have confidence and humility where they are deserved. I hope to be half the craftsman and artist you are someday. Keep it up!
Im very much an intermediate maker but I appreciate the kind words. I only strive to get better at my craft and hopefully some day be able to sell everything i make.
Looks awesome!
Thanks
Outstanding, great job
Thanks
Looks fantastic. Nice job.
Thank you
That is one of the prettiest patterns i have ever seen. Wish you could have kept the cells a bit rounder
Glad you likes it
Awesome Knife. Really like the coffee etch and that green burl is just lovely!
Thank you
Some people are on here saying stop doubting yourself. I say doubt your work all the time for your whole career. Never think too highly of your own work. Never think you know everything. As you grow older, you'll gain quiet confidence. You'll do fine. Oh, my favorite part was the canister release.
Ive been working on that canister release. At first it was a fluke that happened on accident then i figured it was a time saver to do it this way so i figured out how to do it. I have about a 75% success rate.
That knife came out awesome , love the black and green handle. An I agree with you on the coffee etch .
The coffee etch is essential 👌
Another gorgeous knife dude!
Thank you
As always, your work is awesome
Thank you. I appreciate your support
Beautiful!
Thank you
Dude, i watch a lot these videos, your technique to release the canister is genius.
Ive been getting more consistent with it
I agree. I have watched every episode of Forged in Fire and a lot of Kyle Royer videos and I have Never seen a canister come off "in one piece". Well two pieces anyway.
That's good to hear about the forging thing. I'm a beast with an angle grinder already. Forging here I come.
Sweet. Good luck
Outstanding!
Thank you!
very cool pattern!
Thanks
Great video! You do a fantastic job explaining how and why you do things step by step. This is a beautiful knife by the way. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.🔪
Thank you for taking time and watching.
Beautiful work
Thank you
Pretty knife. Good work.

Very beautiful work.

Nice work !

Very nice blade. Enjoyed.
Thanks
Beautiful attention to detail. Very nice design. Beautiful wood on the handle.
Thank you
The colors work awesome together the overall look and color is sick that would be a knife I would use all the time. Keep up the great work 😎
Thanks glad you liked it!
Fantastic blade 👍👍
Thank you
Very well done sir, beautiful handle
Thank you
Yeah, that looks really nice. I guess the bars you put in give it that banded appearance, which I really like. Handle turned out pretty good, too, the shape looks comfortable for a chopper like that
Yea i was hoping it would be more pronounced but i think i twisted it a bit too tight.
man I could use one in my kitchen. Knife looks great.
Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to explain each of the steps during the process of making the knife. I have watched many videos about making knives that are obviously edited to speed up the process, but few take the time to describe how or why they do certain things. As a knife maker myself, I am always interested in seeing what other makers are doing so that I can learn new or more efficient ways of doing things. I don't have a forge, so I make knives using the stock removal method. This has worked very well for me. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Im glad I can help however I can. Sometimes I wish I started with stock removals because man grinding is just about the hardest part of making a knife. It takes a lot of work to get that down. I just jumped straight to damascus with no skills and made some pretty but ugly knifes if you get what i mean.
@JPsBladeworks my first attempt to grind a knife blade was on a bench grinder. It worked, but I spent so much time trying to hand finish it, so I bought a 2x72 belt grinder, the process was greatly improved.
@@phildore46Big belt grinders are AWESOME 👍
@edwardfletcher7790 my first belt grinder was a Grizzly knife grinder, but I recently upgraded to an Ameribrade, a little pricey but more features and variable speed.
Great work ❤
Thanks
Great job
Thank you
Amazing work man! I been forging for about 7 years now self taught. If you haven't try hot cheap instant coffee like the whole jar of coffee. IMO it make the etch pop even more.
The cheaper the better.
Very nice blade!
Thank you
Bro?!!! That's a beautiful knife 🔪 buddy nice work 👍
Thanks bud
Bro u killed it on this one thanks for sharing it with us

Beautiful knife. I love the pattern even if it is subtle. Great job. ~Kevin
Thanks Kevin
I have never seen his type of knife made before. It's a good looking job and I liked your video. It explained everything you were doing while making the knife. Beautiful job, excellent video. Thank you for the hard work.
Thank you. I appreciate the kind words
It's a Japanese style knife designed for vegetables.
It's sometimes used for fish, but never red meat...
Very cool👍👍👍
Thank you
Amazing

That is a beautiful knife. I do like your handle also. Much talent. Peace back to ya.
Thanks glad you liked it ✌️
Good stuff brother.
Much appreciated
Nice job.
Thanks
It's an amazing price bro..Definitely worth every moment you put into it
Thanks
Beautiful blade, very well done. I'd be proud of that if I were you. Maybe some mosaic pins in the Tang, but very beautiful.
Thank you. Unfortunately I dont own any mosaic pins.
Dude that was awesome. Stop doubting yourself. That handle is not only beautiful but it’s highly unusual as well. Great job!! I love that knife OMG !!
✌️🇺🇸😎👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks. Its hard not to doubt ones self. I am my harshest critic...after me is my brother 🤣
The Damascus on this one is very good. I like the stabilized green beryl. I probably would not have mixed the black Mikarta into it, but it's a nice knife.
Thanks. Yes i dropped the ball with the ammount of black micarta
I think it's absolutely not good, love your work ❤
Thank you
Very nice Work. I am new to your work and you very talented. This video gives me some great ideas. Thank you.
You welcome. Glad i could help
Nice job 😎😍
thank you
Awesome work. Love seeing what you come up with. Can’t wait to see the next one. Have you done one with horse shoe nails?
No i havent. Where could inget some of those?
This is really pretty. I'm a chef, and I obviously work with knives a lot, and I do have one comment about the heel of the knife and that is it looked it looked as though it was sharp up the side where my fingers would be. Forgive my ignorance if that's just the style of the knife or my eyes saw something that wasn't there.
towards the black of the heel or do you mean just the heel in general. i always round out the back of my heels so that it is comfortable for the grip
Really enjoy your content young man, but please don’t sell yourself short. You are a very skilled craftsman! Keep up the good work ❤
Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.
Neat vid, personally, I think the grip looks great.
Thanks
What more can you say, nice.
Thanks glad you liked it
very nice work, great video. really like the handle colors, material. the blade is stunning a real piece of art. I feel the nakiri should have a rounder edge on the front point for rolling chopping large veggies. also most professionals chop with pointer, middle and thumb on the blade not sure if that grip was tested. not trying to be critical just food for thought, do your thing.
sure thing
its a great pattern, and i like the half black half green handle.
the paper test is totally fine, but some people atent happy if they not complainig.
I know. I like poking them to get them angrier.
Bearings are such nice steel, chromium, vanadium, high carbon, good quality stainless steel 👍
Yes i love working with bearing steel
@@JPsBladeworks I'm guessing you'd work with the bearing race frame material if you weren't making Damascus ?
Watching Blacksmithing is so soothing, it's such an elemental process. It connects with Men on a primal level seeing a shape being formed from hot metal 🙏👍
Would love to see that knife with a bone handle, but man that was a awesome looking blade!!
Thanks
Very nice, I too would have given the green about 3/4 instead of half but that;s how it goes. Still very pretty finished, I think mosaic after the initial stack might be what you;re after with the rods. But then again who's an armchair quarterback....Keep up the great videos, thanks again.
Im going to mosaic the other half. It will be a very small knife but i want to give tiling a try.
@@JPsBladeworks Good luck, I haven't that either.
another beautiful piece. that pattern just tiled without the twist is a great pattern to try. your videos on a early sunday afternoon with my coffe makes my day, thank you.
I appreciate you watching. I was up until 4am to get this out this morning 😴
Awesome build. Keep up the good work. How about a canister katana for one of your future projects?
One day little puppy one day
Turned out super nice. Coffee etch does so much for the contrast. Will it retain the contrast or do you re-etch ever so often?
Not sure. I havent retched a knife. Im sure through wear and tear it will need tough up in a couple years but that wear and tear means it was being used as intended so thats a good thing
This would make me wanna cook more lol , do a newspaper test it’s better on the blade.
I dont even think i get newpapers anymore
Beautiful knife, very talented.
Thank you i appreciate it
I think the ball bearing pattern has GREAT POTENTIAL but it will take some practice, trial & error, shot in the dark, to find a technique that gives you results that you're happy with..... Personally I like that there is almost a reptile skin look to some of the pattern, and if you could figure out to get that pattern throughout the entire blade then you'd have a great 'look' for a line of knives... but like I said it would take a bit of trial and error until you can figure out exactly what it takes to master the technique....
But I REALLY think you have the skill and talent to achieve this, if it's something you wanted to do...
And aside from the Damascus pattern I am IN LOVE with that green burl handle!!! WOW!!! That is a VERY UNIQUE look, and I LOVE IT!! And I think it would go REALLY WELL with some copper accents if you give them a decent patina.... (I wonder if there is a way to give the blade a green tint to it.. like how you use coffee to create the super dark parts of the pattern... maybe there is a way to add something to the coffee mix.. like copper sulfate, which is really blue tho but just an example.... maybe you could use you YT clout to contact some of the YT chemistry people and see if they could help you out 🤷♂ you'll never know unless you try)
I just wanted to to throw a few ideas out in hope of giving you some inspiration in doing something that no one has done before and help you stand you in the HUGE group of YT blacksmiths... and if not then no harm, no foul :) I'll still enjoy everything you do on here :)
Thanks for the idea. I have a sword i did with a blue patina on the copper fittings that tuned out a really pretty shade of blue green but i dont know if its possible to do that to a knife. Ive seen copper layer knifes patina red but never green let alone straight steel.
lol I've been watching so many of your videos and JUST realized we have the same name...or at least we both go by JP
your videos are awesome btw (you get bonus points for the name haha)
Me and my two brothers also share the same initials. Im Jesus and they are Juan and Jose. Very basic mexican names so we are all JP as well
I think that after twisting it is necessary to stretch more so that the drawing is less pepper-oriented. in general, a beautiful knife, only the guard is missing
A guard for a Nakiri?
@@JPsBladeworks not as a stop, but so that the handle starts with brass
If it cuts paper it’s sharp it ain’t that deep😂😂 awesome build man love all your content!
Thank you. I appreciate your support
I think the ones that you have done with just one item in the can looks better. Do not get me wrong this is a nice one, would love one like that.. Try doing one with just the ball barring in it. I think that the bar stock took the round items and did not allow them to show up. I have a small cooking channel, if you ever want one tried out, please let me know.. Would love to test it out, and I will return it.
yea the round stock was lost in the overall look. hopefully it shows up better on the other half of the billet.
Man. That is a vegetable knife to be proud of!
On your last comment about testing on paper: when you made the watermelon knife, kinda wished to see it decimate some melon. On this knife, would love to see you use it for its intended purpose just a little?
Great vid as always!!!
Ill be honest with you i finished the knife 10 hrs ago and edited til about 4am to get it done in time. So unfortunately no vegetables were harmed in the making of this video 🤣
Sick
Thanks
I love your videos and you do some amazing work. Gotta ask how you like that anvil though. I just bought the same one and was curious how long you have had it. I was a little worried about how long it would last with how cheap I got it.
ive had it a little over 2 years. Its great for the price. Wish I had bought a bigger one but other than that im very happy with my purchase.
I use just a drop of ca glue to keep my round stock in place
It never crossed my mind. I just kept hoding it until i had enough ball bearings in their to hold it in place
Once I saw the complete knife handle and all I feel ya on using less of that block next time around. Still a gorgeous blade all around. I'm off to see if I can afford anything from your shop. Keep up the good works.
Unfortunately I don't have anything on my shop right now. What kind of knives would you be interested for future reference? I hope to have something in stock in the near future.
@@JPsBladeworks I can't afford to much but a tanto style edc would be amazing. Basically for field and everyday use.
You’ve got some great talent! Love watching your videos! The narration is cool too. Glad you don’t put spices or peppers in the canister. Those guys are weird, quiet and SO boring! Keep up the great work!
Thank you.
turned out beautiful! Thank you for sharing your process!
Thank you for taking time and watching
if you used the twist pattern you made with some normal folded damascus with high layer count all around it as say a santoku or something, that would be sweet. looked amazing just gave me that idea. i need to pay you to just work with patterns with me, i wouldnt even care what you finished the billet out as i just love pattern work.
I enjoy experimenting with patterns but im still fairly new. Soon ill be diving into mosaics so im excited to see how many i can screw up
nice work.. i rly like the pattern on the blade (not a big fan of micarta and colored wood but thats just my tast).. isnt a nakiri usually onesided? to finely slice veg and fruits?
Ive seen both with a single bevel and double bevel. I dont have enough reference for making single bevel but I should try that some day.
Line the canister with thin Stainless Steel pieces. It won't forge weld the canister to the billet. It takes much higher heat to forge weld Stainless.
I prefer the spray paint
@@JPsBladeworks As long as it has Titanium Oxide for pigment, it's the same as White Out. Whatever floats your boat!
At the very beginning I was really hoping you were going to say "first I'm going to wash my balls" 😂😂😂
I might next time 😆
@@JPsBladeworks I'll be watching 🤣🤣🤣
you can google each of these names for different Japanese knife types. theres a couple thousand others but these are fairly common.

PANKIRI (SERRATED KNIFE)
MUKIMONO (PARING AND GARNISH KNIFE)
UDON KIRI (UDON NOODLE KNIFE)

I like to make gyutos and western chefs the most.
I'd like to see you forge a blade with a round handle made entirely of steel minus the handle material cut a thumb rest and some minor finger grooves and finish the handle with 25LPI checkering.
That sounds interesting
👍👍👍
🙏
What if you tried doing the bars but without the twist? I imagine they might show up more then. Beautiful work btw!
im sure they would.
I really like how it turned out how much would you sell that for?
Probably 250ish or so
