I would not have thought to use a collective grip with this. I like the idea but I didn't think the collective grips have a twist axis so wouldn't that leave it one axis short.
Did you have a chance to test the dual z-extension configuration? I'm wondering if it will be intuitive for the right hand, since it feels like it will completely change the way wrist "axis" translates to joystick movement. I'm definitely getting one for the left hand, with the new gimbal clutch to emulate the way throttle works.
Thanks alot noob, as always you are very informative direct and straight to the point. Because of this I generally take what you say as fact after I tested alot of your other points. Keep up the great work that you do!!!
Your hands naturally angle at 65 degrees +/- 5, which actually shows a Joystick is more natural then a tendonitis causing keyboard. The Extension will allow you to angle it at your discretion that will fit you individually which is the best part of this design. I noticed the imbalance of the LH and maybe a counter weight will be added in the next design?
This is awesome! I did this mod with my Alphas when i bought them and sent virpil photos and ideas and now it's a product! (made mine from stainless though as i'm a fabricator)
My question would be more about the height difference between the stick and base versus using the Z extension. At the lowest setting on the Z Extension, what is the difference in height from the neck of the Alpha Grip (where your thumb/index finger both touch the stick)?
I saw some people on reddit making mods like these for VIrpil controls. Makes perfect sense to me. I'll probably buy one for both sticks if I ever get the money for a set of Alphas.
I have printed one of these for my vkb stick and it has worked really well with absolutely no flex or warp. But I used real mounting hardware from an existing extension so the contact point between the plastic and the metal was much larger.
So tempted to buy one of these, but I think it would mean changing the whole monster tech system I have bolted to my chair, mainly the keyboard swivel mount
As an owner of the same mounts, who also wants this kind of setup, I don't think it will cause an issue. It looks like most of the grip remains off to the left, and unless you mount it very very low, you shouldn't get any interference
I am intrigued! Please share your experiences in SC. How precise does it feel using thrust? In dogfights? Is it slower when you need to yank the stick really fast? How does rotating feel (while flying) on this configuration? And when the stick is to one side and you need to rotate the alpha? Etc... I am intrigued!!
Looks interesting. Curious as to how your left stick axis binds are setup. Mine are strafe forward, back, left and right, with the twist being up and down. I feel like the forward and back would be nice with it but the left and right and twist would feel odd.
interesting product, inho specially for twist users for the vertical strafe. it seems it would make the twist more intuitive (not left right for up/down)
At first the twist for vertical movement may seem weird, but after a while it is completely natural. When it comes to operating things like cranes and other heavy machinery, your controls hardly have any resembalance of the actuall movments and it may take a while at first to get used to it, but once you get used to it it's completely natural. I personally have the opposite concern with the twist axis in this settup. I am worried that the twist axis would be harder to use.
Hey Noob, I actually went out and got two of these, knew I'd like one, and giving two a go for now. Another high quality piece from Virpil. I use the cosmo SIM springs in my warBRD bases and so the weight was a little off of centre on the x-axis. Easily fixed in Virpil software, just set the new resting position of the x-axis as "centre". Job done, no further tweaks needed. I'm not convinced that the z-axis is usable in the positive direction.. it's not natural to twist the wrist up/back in that direction. But it's working, (has too, as I've no pedals)..
Whelp... I said I wasn't going to spend any more on virpil till I could buy without converting my money to euros and not have to pay to ship overseas. But dang it this is what I've been wanting since I got my hosas set up for space sim.
An interesting idea. Not touched my HOTAS setup for a long time now. I actually have two sets, an X52 and an X52 Pro. Perhaps it is possible to run two of these sticks (and no throttle? or perhaps throttle is possible with two sticks?) I have known for ages that two sticks will be my preferred option to pilot in the Verse, must be about time to dig into this situation :) Just for now it seems my PC's RAM is faulty and cannot load into the Verse for more than about 15 seconds before crashing. Fixing this soon !
Anybody used one of these with a stick and throttle setup? I'm not a fan of dual stick personally, but I'm kind of considering trying one on the primary stick just for the more natural wrist angle
glad to see this catching on. although my method is a bit more obscure. I use aluminum extrusion mounts, and wanted to be able to tilt my joystick for certain circumstances. got myself a $15 aluminum pivot bracket, now both my joysticks (and my throttle if I want) can tilt, and untilt. takes about 10 seconds to change the angle. held in place just as solidly as they are without the pivot bracket.
sweet. i just ordered my constellation alpha with that Z extention with the needed base for my left hand as an addition. noob, do you have an idea how to set up a multi layered setup on your bindings on sc? something like if i hold a certain button, my binding appear to affect the shilds instead of the power triangle. i hope you get my idea..
I mean you can add that with a modifier. Honestly, I believe you will find that to become too complex. Had you thought just about using the keyboard for the more mundane functions? I still use Keyboard for landing gear and a bunch of other stuff
Yes, but it takes up more space which forced me to lower my keyboard and mouse. It improved my ergonomics and broke parts of it elsewhere. I ended up going back to standard.
VKB is making a Left Gladiator stick setup like this, but it's molded plastic to one angle built into their grip based on teaser photos =( I want one for my VKB Gunfighter gimbals because it's more like the Virpil so you can attach it or remove it as desired. Had same luck with iffy 3d printed parts and willing to lay the extra couple dollars for sturdy metal. The other perk of the sideways stick is easier control panel access in smaller sim pits.
Noob, thanks for the video. I'm a little curious but I do like my virpil throttles. That said I have one burning question - during your Alpha grip review you never talked about how Star citizen does not allow use of the thumbstick if the main stick is deflected at all. Basically it seems like it locks out input to the thumbstick if you pitch/yaw/etc. What do you use the thumbstick for? I bought the alpha grip after your review but was very disappointed to find this out for myself. I had hoped to use it for free look but for SC its virtually worthless tasks while piloting.
I don’t use the thumb stick for anything. You could bind it in ED for zoom and a bunch of things such as power target. CIG hasn’t really made any progress with optimizing their bindings in the past three years. I am hoping that they do soon so we can use all these extra features
I like it, but it would be cool if they offered one with a second knuckle that would allow a full 90 degree horizontal platform. Although I’m sure the 45 degree would be sufficient for most.
+BrianMP5T *This new joystick accessory from VIRPIL® Controls is definitely a to-consider for the Universal Simpit concept.* The Z Extension could be the final piece of the puzzle for the left-hand input, to execute a Helicopter-Collective-style thruster control with the Hawk-60® Collective Grip. Virpil still needs to design and make a Hawk-60 Cyclic Grip (to match Lockheed Sikorsky and Boeing Vertol cyclic-grip switchology), which I'd need to build the Roll-Pitch column of a notional Northrop F/A-54 pilot station (a theoretical extrapolation from what Grumman actually did in the G-391 (USDoD: F-14D) Enhanced Fleet Defender).
This is also interesting for fixed-wing ga pilots because of weird control setups like the cirrus sr22 not really fitting into any traditional joysticks in my mind.
I'm having an issue with text boxes. When I try to type in them no matter that text box it is, chat, bookmark, searchbar, whatever, when I hit a key that has a function it takes me out of the text box so I cant type anything. Anyone know what the heck is going on?
I believe Jaguar Gaming (ua-cam.com/channels/ItkszqNYTcL-VuvaZOGfiw.html) is the actual inventor of this Z-adapter, and originally made it for his simpit many years ago. I truly hope VirPil partnered with him and didn't just rip him off. If they didn't, and just ripped him off, I will be thoroughly disappointed with them.
Came here to point that out as well. He goes by the channel name *Afterimage Flight* now. I don't recall if he "invented" the idea, but his videos showing off how he executed this in his simpit setup definitely set off lightbulbs of inspiration across the community.
Hey noob! Question for you how does this feel using one of the helicopters sticks vs the constellation? Does it feel more natural also what do you do to adjusts once you lose your Z-axis (twist function)? Thought about getting one soon!

This is the innovation gaming peripheral needs. Too bad it doesn't happen in most genres, but finally I got an intuitive way to use a HOSAS! Because originally, HOSAS has only 2 axes we can intuitively associate with up and down and 4 with left and right, like this it's finally 3/3 which is the motions we do.
I really don't get this. Besides centering being a concern, which you mentioned, it would seem like the movements would be counterintuitive. So strafe right is down? What's wrong with dual stick as is and why would one want to make a fake hotas?
Strafe right is right, and forward is forwards, it just changes strife up and down to a twist motion similar to a bike accelerator (changing the twist Axis from vertical to almost horizontal)
Weeoo

The Extension will allow you to angle it at your discretion that will fit you individually which is the best part of this design.
I noticed the imbalance of the LH and maybe a counter weight will be added in the next design?
There is no real need IMO for more weight. Just adjusting the tilt a bit makes this sit level
Just when you think you might have everything you need something else comes along. Thanks for the 📹
Merry Christmas
This is awesome! I did this mod with my Alphas when i bought them and sent virpil photos and ideas and now it's a product! (made mine from stainless though as i'm a fabricator)
Do you recommend these on the WarBRD-D Base or the MT50 Base?
Centering is my main concern, I feel like I expect it to add additional strain the springs in my base.
It works great at a normal angle
My question would be more about the height difference between the stick and base versus using the Z extension. At the lowest setting on the Z Extension, what is the difference in height from the neck of the Alpha Grip (where your thumb/index finger both touch the stick)?
Lower overall
Its not slower at all. You hand is in the exact same location, just angled.
Ok that is awesome bro!!!!
@TheNOOBIFIER1337 what table are you using?
Does the twist axis work like a motorcycle throttle now? Because spacebike.
This looks like it would make up-and-down strafing so much smoother
Looks interesting. Curious as to how your left stick axis binds are setup. Mine are strafe forward, back, left and right, with the twist being up and down. I feel like the forward and back would be nice with it but the left and right and twist would feel odd.
Twist works perfect
interesting product, inho specially for twist users for the vertical strafe. it seems it would make the twist more intuitive (not left right for up/down)
At first the twist for vertical movement may seem weird, but after a while it is completely natural.
Oh noob, we need this UT I already have mine via 3d printed version awhile a go, but good virpil made it for you all.
I have a set of printed adaptors that work very well but the all metal is too nice to pass on so I ordered a set
Adjust the angle and they will center out. The Z will also work when this is done
As a fellow printer enthusiast. Yeah threads never work, only way I would see this work is the stronger stuff like polycarbonate.
weeoo god damn virpil never compromises. love it.
thanks for the vid!
Whelp... I said I wasn't going to spend any more on virpil till I could buy without converting my money to euros and not have to pay to ship overseas. But dang it this is what I've been wanting since I got my hosas set up for space sim.
I bought the Virpils, per your experience. Did I understand you that the Twist is locked out so no Roll? Thanks again for all your help.
Twist “Can Be Locked” but it isn’t locked by default
How do you think this would be on both sticks
An interesting idea. Not touched my HOTAS setup for a long time now. I actually have two sets, an X52 and an X52 Pro. Perhaps it is possible to run two of these sticks (and no throttle? or perhaps throttle is possible with two sticks?)
I have known for ages that two sticks will be my preferred option to pilot in the Verse, must be about time to dig into this situation :)
Just for now it seems my PC's RAM is faulty and cannot load into the Verse for more than about 15 seconds before crashing. Fixing this soon !
Anybody used one of these with a stick and throttle setup? I'm not a fan of dual stick personally, but I'm kind of considering trying one on the primary stick just for the more natural wrist angle
When you play SC, do you use GameGlass ?
Are VBK Gladiator Joysticks good ?
Which Joystick do you recommend ? I have about 150$ for HOSAS.
Interesting product from Virpil. I was wondering what it was for exactly also. Your reviews are very helpful and informative. Many thanks! 🙂
Ordered one Jan 4th, Should land Feb 4th on the California west coast. About a 30 day lead at time of post.
glad to see this catching on.
although my method is a bit more obscure. I use aluminum extrusion mounts, and wanted to be able to tilt my joystick for certain circumstances.
got myself a $15 aluminum pivot bracket, now both my joysticks (and my throttle if I want) can tilt, and untilt. takes about 10 seconds to change the angle.
held in place just as solidly as they are without the pivot bracket.
pics or it didint happened ;-)
@@DrPet80 I have pictures, no idea how to share them here. I think youtube is automatically screening out my imgur links
sweet. i just ordered my constellation alpha with that Z extention with the needed base for my left hand as an addition.
noob, do you have an idea how to set up a multi layered setup on your bindings on sc? something like if i hold a certain button, my binding appear to affect the shilds instead of the power triangle. i hope you get my idea..
I mean you can add that with a modifier. Honestly, I believe you will find that to become too complex. Had you thought just about using the keyboard for the more mundane functions? I still use Keyboard for landing gear and a bunch of other stuff
I'd love to check this out, but the online store for Virpil wont load.
virpil-controls.eu sure it does
I think my next setup is going to be dual Constellation Alpha Prime's with dual z-extension on both.
I am planning a short video on this..
Did you ever end up doing dual z-extensions?
Yes, but it takes up more space which forced me to lower my keyboard and mouse. It improved my ergonomics and broke parts of it elsewhere. I ended up going back to standard.
When buying my sticks I considered standard sticks, but opted for the "Motorcycle" feel of duel VKB's Omni's
Could this be used to extend a cyclic towards the user?, NLR boeing chair can move the stick away and down so need something to bring it back.
I suppose but it would totally alter the range of motion of the controller.
ordered one of these when the announcement vid dropped
VKB is making a Left Gladiator stick setup like this, but it's molded plastic to one angle built into their grip based on teaser photos =( I want one for my VKB Gunfighter gimbals because it's more like the Virpil so you can attach it or remove it as desired. Had same luck with iffy 3d printed parts and willing to lay the extra couple dollars for sturdy metal. The other perk of the sideways stick is easier control panel access in smaller sim pits.
Interesting product for sure, Just to confirm all the axis of the stick still work with the attachment including the twist Z axis?
Yes. If the grip supports it
Noob, thanks for the video.
It lays practically flat if you like.
Virpil still needs to design and make a Hawk-60 Cyclic Grip (to match Lockheed Sikorsky and Boeing Vertol cyclic-grip switchology), which I'd need to build the Roll-Pitch column of a notional Northrop F/A-54 pilot station (a theoretical extrapolation from what Grumman actually did in the G-391 (USDoD: F-14D) Enhanced Fleet Defender).
so when you purchase the sticks, you also NEED the base then? otherwise they're not really operational?
Correct.
This is also interesting for fixed-wing ga pilots because of weird control setups like the cirrus sr22 not really fitting into any traditional joysticks in my mind.
They always make good quality stuff
Christmas came early, this looks AMAZING.
I'm having an issue with text boxes. When I try to type in them no matter that text box it is, chat, bookmark, searchbar, whatever, when I hit a key that has a function it takes me out of the text box so I cant type anything. Anyone know what the heck is going on?
What software are you in
quiete handy but i find pedals now way better approach for throttel and for strafing for me the normal shape is enought .
So it allows your spacecraft to strafe side to side? Then the ultimate versatility would be a controller that allows it to go up and down as well.
It changes nothing. You have the same control, but it’s bent on its side
So u don't have the twist feature with the extension? strafe up and down?
Yes you do. Twist works
@@NOOBIFIER1337 oh ok, lol, then I guess have to pay shipping again :(
I believe Jaguar Gaming (ua-cam.com/channels/ItkszqNYTcL-VuvaZOGfiw.html) is the actual inventor of this Z-adapter, and originally made it for his simpit many years ago.
You don’t have to loose Z if you use alphas. It feels very good to use
Did you ever make a video about a dual Z setup?
Not yet, but I have been testing it on and off. I will add this to the list
This is very interesting. I was wondering how well it would translate to Star Citizen
Have you tried dual z extensions? I just saw NXT release their own version and I just happen to be in the market finally for sticks!
I got one and it has twist axis.
It's AWESOME!
1:13 this really sounded like a full minute of "I do not know how to set up/troubleshoot my 3D printer and I am not going to bother to figure it out" lol.
No not really.. I have a 500 joystick, and I want a 100 solution that works.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 I get that. But can't say that those don't work if you didn't try to make it work. 3D printing is a fairly mature subject nowadays, and a perfectly valid way to solve issues.
@@vladimirlovato4192 for Prototyping and testing, sure.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 not just prototyping. There are incredibly strong reinforced filaments, and techniques people use to finish their items and make them viable. You just need the will.
I've seen similar products in the past and they always looked like overpriced garbage. This is the first time I've seen someone seriously attempt to manufacture an angled extension that might actually hold up to extended use. Thanks for the product review, NOOB.
i literaly spent all night yesterday looking for somethin like this and didnt find anything that wasn't 3d printed...
so i bought 2 of them
I saw VKB do this and I have VKB sticks and have been waiting for it
No talk about twist axis w/ the angled extension?
I said it works fine
@@NOOBIFIER1337 does it feel weird in any way? More or less natural for vertical strafing?
Did you ever make a vid talking about using two of these together for both hands?
There wasn’t really any video there.. it was just going to be me using both at once..
@@NOOBIFIER1337 That's a shame as I'm curious about using two angled sticks. It would have been nice to get some thoughts and a demonstration.
@@RainMakeR_Workshop it works perfectly as you expect. Comfortable and precise
@@NOOBIFIER1337 Is there any stream archive or anything where you use it?
This is the innovation gaming peripheral needs. Too bad it doesn't happen in most genres, but finally I got an intuitive way to use a HOSAS!
Because originally, HOSAS has only 2 axes we can intuitively associate with up and down and 4 with left and right, like this it's finally 3/3 which is the motions we do.
what control is that on the Z extension?
Hawk 60
I really don't get this. Besides centering being a concern, which you mentioned, it would seem like the movements would be counterintuitive. So strafe right is down? What's wrong with dual stick as is and why would one want to make a fake hotas?
Strafe right is right, and forward is forwards, it just changes strife up and down to a twist motion similar to a bike accelerator (changing the twist Axis from vertical to almost horizontal)
