How venoms kill - Venom 101
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лют 2016
- Venom... the word sends chills up your spine at the mere mention of it. And with good reason. Its aim is to incapacitate its victims and boy does it work a treat. What's really interesting is that not all venoms are equal and not all work the same way. They're as diverse as the animals that deliver it. From clotting blood, causing paralysis and destroying living cells. It's a fascinating world that Assoc. Professor Jamie Seymour knows a thing or ten about, after all that's his shtick. So given that he's a fun-loving sharing kind of guy he given us a bit of a lesson, kind a like a venom 101 of his world (which is venomology and toxinology which are tricky words to say let alone spell) showing us how they work on their victims which sometimes include the human-kind, and the results are..... all sorts of awesome! He also sets us straight on the difference venom and poison, which we will now be able to use with so much confidence, the world will think he has been cloned!

On point. The mark of a great video is one that can make me sad it's over after 9 minutes.
+SmarterEveryDay Amen to that, Destin! It was nice seeing the Professor again after your videos!
I'm surprised I didn't faint. I couldn't finish Spider vs. Penis because I literally fainted, lol
+SmarterEveryDay WOW! the man from SED loved our video! in the words of a seriously epic movie "we are not worthy!" Thanks mate, all we really did was what you suggested we should do, so you should take some credit as well!
+Stoneman66666 thanks for the support!
+Jamie Seymour And thank you for the great video! Keep up the good work, this stuff is fascinating!
Meanwhile, in Australia…
Incredible video! Having been a past victim of arachnid α-Latrotoxin myself, this gave me very strange feels.
+It's Okay To Be Smart ouch! got nailed by a red back hey! I feel for you! Thanks for the support
who here was uncomfortably feeling their heart beat as they watched this video?
WOW. This was so illustrative and put together fantastically! It'd be interesting to see effects of insect and arachnid venom under similar lab tests. Like... bullet ant venom.
+thebrainscoop hmmmm Sounds like the theme for another TNOS video! thanks
I'm a simple person. I see a cute guy shirtless, I click the video. I see blood turned to jelly, I click like.
+Rauron ahahah
+Rauron I see a shirtless guy's blood turned to jelly, I subscribe.
RIP random frog
+Jeff The Ripper its a toad
Joey Ouyang oh ok.
RIP random toad
does it bother to anyone else the fact that he aint wearing gloves? ewwwghh
It's a Cane Toad, they are an invasive species in Australia so they usually kill them when they find them.
I don’t like your profile pic
It actually sounds pretty interesting to be a toxicologist. First time i saw a video where you were featured, was in a smarter every day video, and when i heard you made your own channel i subscribed instantly. It's rare that you see a person with so much love for his/her job, and that is how every teacher should be like, because that's how people listen and learn. you could just as well be a boring person who's like "yeah here are some venom, see you next time" but you take some real examples of it, i think it was really interesting to watch a heart stop beating, blood clotting, and real examples of people who's been stung or punctured by these animals and watch the effect of the venom. So thanks for these videos, there is not one single day that goes by where science fails to impress me, and teach me something
+poisoncobra7 Nothing you have said above about "teaching I disagree with poisoncobra7. My views are that if I can not make what I'm trying to teach you i) fun ii) exciting and iii) if I'm not enthusiastic about it then i should not be teaching! Thansk for the support!
+poisoncobra7 *TOXINOLOGIST! :P
ChirrupForScience oh damn it :/
+poisoncobra7 || i enjoyed reading your comment, POISON COBRA number SEVEN
TrueEerinessJazzMile lol just realized that my name makes no sense, it should be VenomousCobra7 instead xD
hope the toad recovers fine.
+Yajirobe Hmmm he's gone to sleep now.
+Yajirobe Hmmm he's gone to sleep now.
Superb educational video, i subscribed, really hoping to see and learn more.
+Yajirobe Great to hear, hope you enjoy our new videos that will be released soon. No toads will be harmed in the making of these vids ;)
oh, I completely understand that one frog had to be sacrificed for such a video to be made, It was really interesting to see it hooked up to a monitor meant for a mouse. These are not the types of machine that we are used to see in everyday life. Overall very interesting stuff, I instantly subscribed after watching the video, I wish you good luck with your youtube videos, and hopefully this can help the cause and draw the very needed attention to research into venoms and toxins.
This is one of the coolest science videos I've ever seen on UA-cam (and also one of the hardest to watch). Excellently done!
+MythicalRedFox Awww that's really sweet. A big heartfelt thanks for the team :)
How about changing the title? Noone will click on a video which says mpeg in it.
Edit: they changed the title
+Charlie Ringström Thanks for the heads up on that Charlie. It went live before it was supposed to :) Title now changed. Do you mind if we ask you Charlie how you found the video? Thanks in advance.
+The Nature of Science Destin! ;-)
+Charlie Ringström He shared a video of yours on Reddit
+Charlie Ringström thanks for the heads up :)
+The Nature of Science I found it via reddits r/biology page
Please wear gloves. I'm so concerned hahaha
venoms are not dangerous if you touch them. They need to make a way into your blood system to deal real damage. that is why often it is okay for predators to eat snakes and scorpions, the digestive system ruins the venom. This is contrast to poison, which can be dangerous on contact.
your skin is a remarkible defense against many things, venoms included.
I probably wouldn't want to dissect a Cane Toad without gloves on though, Cane Toads are poisonous and knicking yourself on a scalpel or bone while touching the toad's skin could potentially expose you. These are the toads that people lick to cause hallucinations.
Venom has always fascinated and terrified me. Subbed.
I think Destin is going to give your channel a fair boost in subs. All the best!
+BinkyTheRabbit thanks, appreciate the support!
+BinkyTheRabbit We're pretty fascinated as well as you can tell and thanks for your warm wishes, it's much appreciated. Big high five to Destin, we love his work too!
Don't eat in front of your videos. Noted. Dully noted. (Thanks for the amzing job btw)
+AstroBax Yeah... sorry about that ;)
Duly
This is officially my favourite youtube video, keep up the awesome vids Jamie!
+Joe Rogan Yay!! High five to us! Thanks for the awesome feedback :)
RIP toad 2016-2016
I want this guy to be my teacher. I'll never miss class and his accent will keep me so intrigued time and time again.
Jamie is definitely one of my favorite people to watch on UA-cam. Do more venom videos?
Never have I been so interested and disturbed at once
Great video folks and some brilliant uploads so far! Very informative and awesome demonstrations. I look forward to more :)
I suddenly really want to study Toxinology at James Cook University.
Did you ever study toxicology?
This video was very well put together. The examples used and how you demonstrated the various affects of venom on human cells/rbc and on a toad is great. I would love to see more of this.
What an absolutely fantastic video! Had me gripped all throughout. Venom is a terrifying but awesome thing, and seeing its effects in such a unique way is amazing.
I hope you continue making videos. This is so excellent and well put together. Thank you for sharing your field of study with us!
I've never really been interested in toxinology before, but every time I watch one of your videos, I get more and more curious. I look forward to your next one. They are very informative and interesting.
What an awesome channel! I've shotgunned every video posted so far.
+NightHawkInLight cool! Thanks
dang... your channel is the most venomous of them all, got me pinned to chair for that better part of my day
Enthralling, frighting and wondrous... all at the same time. Well done!
+Gabi Bookatz thanks
I'm really starting to like this channel! Loving the angles you're filming at as well (on the table between all the jars). Keep it up!
+littlemira89 Thanks. The gurus behind the camera have, well lets just say, a real artistic flair about them :-)
My biology teacher showed this to my class and I can say we all enjoyed your video. thank you. :)
I've seen so many documentaries about animals that I'm not easily intrigued any longer, but this video was amazing. Thanks.
+Tereza Dragounová Ahhh that's awesome! Jamie is so passionate about his work and has a unique way showcasing the natural world which is always fun.
Two videos a week apart?
Does this mean the channel is gonna keep pumping these out? Really loving the videos so far
+Giggle Gasm thanks. yes we will be releasing videos probably ever two weeks!
One of the most truly good videos on you tube..
Thank you for the video
Best nature mini-episodes on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.
+nastypokernastypoker thanks! appreciate the support!
Very informative and factual and presented without unnecessary sensationalism. Great clip!
loved the clips that you and Destin made on SED and stoaked to find that you've got your own channel now! Subscribed and looking forward to more!! :)
One of the best vids on your channel. Bravo!
+EddyGurge thanks, we appreciate your comments :-)
This is one of the best channels on UA-cam. Every video is captivating
+memberHD Glad you think so and thanks for taking the time to comment, it's much appreciated.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL THIS MAN IS SUCH A INSPIRATION RN IT'S UNREAL I AM LEARNING NEW THINGS DAY BY DAY WHEN I VISIT/WATCH UR CHANNEL OR U BEEN FEATURED IN OTHER WILDLIFE SERVICES AN UA-camRS WHO FEATURE U IT'S SOOO DANG SICKKKK BRUH THANKS FOR ALL OF THIS HOLY SHIT!!❤💯🐐
Awesome video. I like that they're not rushed and that you explain things and give time for us to understand.
Keep it up!
+Simon Brown thanks. The tnos tema were a little worried that this video was too long, but I just could not explain it any faster and I didnt want to leave any of the venom outs, so I'm glad you didnt think it was too long and boring :-)
This was incredible. Your channel has become a fine addition to the swath of educational channels I'm subscribed to. I'm so glad Destin of SmarterEveryDay linked me to you
It was fascinating watching how various kinds of venom worked, and I am now forever paranoid of ever walking along a beach in Australia for fear of stonefish from now on
+Vectored Thrust thanks for your comments. Although australia has some seriously venomous beasts (we have the most venomous animal in ever group EXCEPT the scorpions and centipedes (and beofre you ask, I dont know why..............yet!) ) we only manage to kill baout 3-7 people on avergae a year from venomous animals! So although it may SEEM like a hazardous place to live/visit/holiday in, its actually really safe.
Jamie Seymour
Oh, I know that full well. I've visited Australia numerous times and have australian friends. The catch is I've always visited in the winter months because it neatly lines up with my northern hemisphere holidays and it meant I never once visited australia for the beaches
+Jamie Seymour
I'm curious what criteria you would use to rank "venomousness".
+Jamie Seymour uplnQwr
Also thank you for this video you guys! All your vids are very interesting and informational! And I'm so glad you guys didn't blur out the toad scene. So many people become desensitized to seeing things like that. Idk of I'm using the word correctly if not sorry about that.
Absolute thumbs up for the pseudo-live frog demonstration.
Also breaking the 3rd wall like a boss at 3:13 😂
By far most educational video ever in youtube :) Thank you for your time.
This is incredible, what an amazing video.
Ever since I first saw the stonefish video over on the SmarterEveryDay channel I have craved to see and learn more from Dr. Jamie Seymour! It is because of Dr.Seymour that I have decided to start looking into toxinology as something that I seriously want to do and I am SO excited to see that my wish for more videos has come true! Keep on inspiring people like you did with me because it makes a difference!
+Samuel M thanks, really appreciate the comments, and if watching the video has heightened your enthusiasm for science (and in particular toxinology) then we have done our job!
Jesus Christ, what happened to the blood when he introduced venom is the one of the most chilling things I've ever seen. To think that that's what happens to the human body is just to scary to imagine.
I really enjoy the animations and graphics you use in these videos. Great explanation and extrapolation of the subject!
+thief9001 Thanks, glad to hear you enjoy the vids. We have heaps of fun brainstorming ideas, bringing the videos to life and sharing our knowledge.
Such a good video. The live demonstrations were super helpful and really helped me to understand what you were saying. Thank you so much!
Both Smarter Every Day and It's Okay To Be Smart sent me here, and I'm glad I came! Great video, I actually wished it was longer.
+shirinie999 thanks . appreciate the support!
This is a fantastic video, and I'm glad to see something both interesting and educational pop up on UA-cam.
Awe shucks, thanks for your kind words and we're glad it's hitting the mark. We love doing this kinda thing
Absolutely stunning video, subscribed immediately. Keep making them!
+mit1mit2mity4 thanks! You guys keep liking them and the TNOS team will keep making them
Destin sent me here, and I'm glad!! Subscribed!
+nicklk thanks, appreciate it. Destin! Wow where would we be without SED! I love his stuff as well!
,
, p
super impressed by the quality of the content. great animations. amazing that such a new channel has such a great team filming and editing. Def agree that a warning would be good if there's gonna be shocking imagery (didnt bother me but i could see it bothering someone else). PLUS your enthusiasm for the subject, which many others have commented on, reminds me of the Late Great Steve Irwin. Keep up the good work!
PS. Destin also sent me here!
+cxcevents thanks for the support. Yer, Destin (and SED) are all sorts of awesome.
Thank you, absolutely loved it
Mark of a great video, you dry heave through a good portion of it but it is so good you have to keep watching.
Glad you enjoyed it! If it makes you feel any better our resident mermaid was dry heaving with the blood clots ;)
Such a nice channel so far, can't wait for some more videos!
+The Tank Excellent, glad to hear you're enjoying our work. Hopefully we're on the right path. Would love to hear what you think of our other videos that will be released soon.
This video is so informative, excellent job. This clearly explains everything to me.
I love this video. The hands on demonstration really drives home the point.
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Loved the hands-on demonstrations. The toad thing was super cool.
+Catherine Lu Thanks for the feedback :)
These videos are super cool! Just watched all of them, you should have your own TV show!
Seeing that toad’s heart beat like that was really interesting. Liked the video.
Informative and entertaining, really glad I found this video! Would not want come across any of these guys in the wild... especially the toad.
+Michael Thanks for the feedback. These creatures are pretty amazing to see in the wild. The cane toads you can see everywhere in Far North Queensland, they're actually a pest. Also if you don't mind us asking how did you come across this vid?
The Nature of Science interesting! Surething, I found it through a post on Reddit. Here's a link: reddit.com/r/videos/comments/46b0sw/how_box_jellyfish_venom_can_stop_a_beating_heart/
+The Nature of Science Reddit.
+Marko Castillo Ahhh thanks for the heads up, you're a star!
Best video so far!! I think you should fix up the video title just to 'Venom 101' though
+Lachlan Thanks for that Lachlan you're a champ. I was having a moment and thought it was on private until we were ready for the release.
+Brandon Cabral Let's just politely say that one of our members had a moment....or in how she would explain it 'Her brain was waterlogged'. We'll forgive our fab mermaid teammate this time :)
Amazing video and last one part was the best of your video o.O
Amazing video! Who knew I'd be so interested in venoms. Well off to learn more about toxinoolgy!!
WOW this channel is awesome the quality of the videos is really really good! plus its Australian which makes it 10x better, keep up the good work, i hope your guys keep uploading regularly, if you want to keep the channel active this year i would aim for 1 video a week if that's possible. Plus your description seems to be over detailed i would try to stay away from slabs of texts, plus i would include more links in your descriptions such facebook page, twitter, reddit ect. Btw the content is really good just as good as a T.V. show if not better! P.S plz keep the channel active this year
+Logstar you're a star! Thanks for your kind words, it's much appreciated. We're still finding our feet with the channel so your advice is much appreciated. We thought we would release a video every two weeks which will give us time to do our paid work :) We would love to work on this full time... maybe one day. A TV show would be brilliant. Will also add more links to. Keep the feedback coming...
Marvelous demonstrations.... Great Stuff.... Thank you Sir :) Fascinating
Incredible video mate! Well made, high production value, great information!
+Andrew Todd Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback it's much appreciated.
I just watched through all of your videos. This channel is going places! Personally, I'd love to see videos like this that are a bit longer then your average 3-4mins. Cheers!
+m3aneapolis Big high five to you for watching all the vids, much appreciated. We're still playing with the length of the videos which is topic dependent but if the masses want longer vids, we'll deliver longer vids :)
This was super cool. I'm so glad I found this channel.
We're glad you found it too :)
Sir, you have the greatest albeit possibly most PTSD enducing job in the world. Huge fan of your work, Dr. Seymour, not only are your videos highly informative but they're very entertaining. Nice one.
Thanks for your kind words and feedback James, its much appreciated.
Sending the love to the Professor for you.
Please do. Have a fantastic day, lads.
Dude, this is awesome. Thank you so much. Great video
Such a great video! I learned a lot in just 9 minutes. Keep them coming :)
+Besmira Alija we will aim to please! Watch this space. More in their way!
Instant subscribed to this channel! Awesome!
Talk about fascinating-- watching the toad's heart slowly turn white and stop beating within seconds of the Irukandji jellyfish's venom being introduced was amazing to watch, seriously. Thanks for another fantastic video!
+strfiretiger123 Thanks for the support! Without seeming like a smarty pants though, its actually the venom from the big box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) which causes the heart to stop beating :-)
+Jamie Seymour Ah whoops! My mistake haha. Thanks for the correction! ^^
Absolutely amazing. What an in depth look at venom and the different effects it has on the body. The toad was an amazing experiment to witness. Fantastic video, super interesting, and I can't wait to study this more in depth after some schooling!
One of the most interesting video i have ever watched 🤩🤩 thx a lot
Great videos! I love them. You deserve way more support than you have! :)
+Numb3rNinee thanks the TNOS team thanks you for your support!
THIS IS SO AWESOME, I LOVE WHEN VIDEOS MAKE ME LOVE SCIENCE EVEN MORE
Amazing...and scary. Thanks for this!
Awesome video and channel keep them coming :)
omg this was so awesome!!!! very intense!! your literally filming things that have never been filmed before (to my knowledge) publicly at least... keep it up ill be telling many people about your channel!!! OK ill admit the blood vials were a little weird but mainly because you were injecting your own blood lol keep making these amazing videos!!
Loved this video, very informative! The accent is a bonus too!
This is fascinating! I'd love to see even more videos going in depth into how these poisons work on the cellular level. It's cool and a bit scary how many vital processes in our body can easily be stopped by tiny tiny amounts of a particular substance
+Chase Blanchette thanks for the support. We would love to do more on VENOMS (we may even do one on poisons :-)) Its a little hard to show cellular level effects but we are working on it.
Now I feel like I want to be toxicalogy because by watching that its so interesting and fascinating. Please make more of this video😊
That was just fascinating. The Toad heart and Box Jellyfish venom was incredible. Kinda reminded me of how local anesthetic can make tissue turn white like that.
+FF sake Thanks for your feedback and glad you enjoyed the video. It's a pretty fascinating field to study and lucky we have Jamie on our team. We have some more videos coming up next week, so stay tuned.
Worst moment of my life is when I was 3. I almost died. So I went swimming, but that sea was known for box jellyfish. I had my floaties on. I went a little far and felt something latch onto my leg. I screamed and splashed until my uncle came and got me. I felt burning sensations all over my leg. When I got to shore, I saw a box jellyfish attached to me. People poured vinager on it and called 911. I was in the hospital to recover for a while.
Best video ever. Soooo damn interesting. Is there an hour long video of Jamie just talking his stuff because I'll watch it!
+CoryBaker92 Great to hear. An hour of Jamie? Not year, we're slowing working up to it :)
Love the channel and the detailed explanations.
+mrTHEsoccerGeeK thanks, the TNOS team loves that you love it :-)
These videos are great! Getting me back into scientific thinking like I've not been for some years
+Conn Talbot Excellent, welcome back :)
When can we expect more videos? These are AMAZING!
Very good work easy to understand, thank you.
This was an incredible video, thanks for taking the time to make it! If I were a teacher I'd totally show this to my class
+Sumanth Neerumalla fantastic! Thats EXACTLY what the TNOS team wants to hear!
Superb video - so informative. Subscribed to this channel.
Destin at Smarter Every Day sent me here. Great video, really cool.
+robin graves thanks!
This is prob my favorite video in your library.
Destin brought me here. The best channel on the whole UA-cam! Regards from Estonia!!
+lennutrajektoor Estonia??? How exciting, welcome and thanks for the comment. :)
+lennutrajektoor Wow, thanks, love the support, but I dont think we are a scratch on SED (well not yet that is :-))
This channel has such potential I can't express it properly. Keep talking, filming, uploading. Repeat many-many-many times. Prominence & recognition will come very soon. I'm telling this will be as big as any other geek channel on YT. Love energy you have but love what you do!
subscribed!! what an amazing video. id love to see one on arachnid venom too
This was a great video
+pls help Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it :)
This was incredibly informative!
