Scaring scorpions makes them more venomous

- Although they look all A-team tough on the exterior with armour-plating and a don’t mess with me stinging tail, scorpions can actually be a bunch of scaredy cats. But don’t take this as a weakness because the scarder (yes that is a word, Google said so…) they are, the more potent their venom becomes. No-one has been able to show this in any other venomous animal.
Here’s how it all goes down (or up in this case..) Scorpions have two components to their venom. One for using in defence against furry animals with sharp teeth such as small marsupials and mice who like to eat scorpions and the other to capture prey such as crickets and spiders.
What researches found was that when the scorpion was regularly exposed to predators i.e the highly frightening frankenmouse, the amount of venom for defence increased and the venom for capturing prey decreased.
Which makes perfect sense, you need to try and give anything that is going to eat you as much whoop-ass as possible which comes in the form of a deadly tail fashioned with a venomous sting.
What is even more amazing is that they can do this within 4 weeks! If a venomous snake tried to pull that off, it would take them generations, which makes it super cool for a scorpion to be a super scary cat. The key message here… embrace your vulnerable side it could give you super powers. Don’t take our word for it, check out the video.

"Here's a deadly creature. We're going to piss it off and see it that makes it even deadlier." Fuckin' aussies, man.
+Hirumaru the Rageaholic What can I say? :-)
Deadly? People need to specify whether something is deadly? Down here everything is deadly.
+Boglenight XD
Jayhawk2k16
One time I went camping and a scorpion made it's way into my shot glass which I had left unattended, you can probably see where that went.
Boglenight It went to a special place right ._.
I bet that scorpion had some stories to tell when it got home.
+The Count of Monte Disco I'm sure it did!
"Honey, you won't believe what happened! They kept shoving a dead rat in my face for 4 weeks, it scared the venom out of me!" hue
then theyd tie me down with a rubber band and shock the fuck outta me! oh love it was horrible.
Vegan Clorox for real
Nobody believed him...
This is a man who LOVES his job. Beautiful to watch.

Come on now, you know that almost all animal presenters are like that.
Yea, I want what he's on too...
Fun little fact. That pill bug he picks up in the beginning of the video isn't actually an insect. It's an isopod, closer related to crustaceans.
hidanprime Most so called insects are not insects at all.
Woodlouce
hidanprime its latin name is isopoda, that would explain a lot😉
No it's actually called a rolly pollie
They’re rolling pollies
There seems to be a trend with Aussies, childlike enthusiasm, dangerous/venomous animals and a desire to provoke said animals... Love it. Keep it up :D Just... please don't get stung by any of them.
Keen Trasborg we enjoy life! We like to have fun!
Scorpions are not highly dangerous, in general.
Rip Steve Irwin my childhood hero :''(
Keen Trasborg he just loves his job how’s that childlike?
I love his enthusiasm
We couldn't agree more. it's infectious.... The good type ;)
Nope nope nope nope nope nope. Pick up scorpion and put him in a jar to take back to the lab? Nope. More like, put myself into a scorpion proof jar and roll myself back to the lab.
Davis Djubovs :D
AirIUnderwater lol same
:D
most people would say that not all scorpions are venomous to humans its venom would not kill you
TencoYT91 cant really grow out of phobias, takes a lot of time and exposure to cure a phobia
"Aww, guys! You made me venom. :("
this comment should have so many more likes
@@Juggalotusable lmao. Maybe they just don't get the reference
I know this guy here from Smartereveryday's interview. I'm so glad I found this channel!
+Efren Chen Shhhhh don't tell anyone it's him :) We're super glad you found our channel to. Share away friends...
+The Nature of Science Also found this channel through Smarter every day. Applying for a Bachelor of Science Marine Biology at James Cook next semester.
That's brilliant @Dylan Durose!! Let us know how you go and drop by to say hi.

Johan Dale I know!
Most under-subbed channel on UA-cam.
+G-Games thanks. Subb away peeps :)
Agreed! Hopefully you can make some kind of collab with Destin to promote the channel!
+Charlie Ringström Ive done some videos with the man himself, Destin, from SED and he is a huge supporter of us. SED is an AWESOME channel and if we can achieve 1/10 of what he has done then we will be happy vegemites :-)
+Jamie Seymour Yeah, but you didn't have your channel to promote back then! :-)
+Charlie Ringström hmmmm good point ! :-)
And this is an exact example of why my zoology professor says basic research is necessary because it can be used in applied research. Any normal person might ask "Why do we need to know this shit? I'm not going around scaring scorpions." Then, by the end of the video, "Oh, we can fluoresce cancer cells and find them in the body." No way would I have ever come up with that idea.

Oh yeah I knew that already I was just... My brain wasn't working properly atm...
The editing is superb, and you have a fantastic delivery. I hope you get many more subs. Great channel!
+urgetester Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback, it's much appreciated. We're hoping to get some more subs too.
Scorpion at the end: “I’ve seen some shit”
Anyone else seen him on SmarterEverday?
Destins UA-cam channel is awesome
That guy is just really fun to watch. He could be like "Okay guys, in this episode we are going to find out if blending the peanut butter and jelly together tastes better than jelly and peanut butter on each slice of bread, and that is just the nature of sandwiches"
+Mr. Midnight not sure how to reply to that ;-)
Jamie Seymour Haha any reply is awesome. Keep up the amazing work!
+Mr. Midnight POTATOES
I am willing to give away my accounting career and work for this man...it is so interesting...
We love working with him too! You should come and study with him :)
+The Nature of Science I am travelling to Mt Isa followed by Cairns in June, I can drive down to Townsville - I guess it a 4 hr journey. It will be great meeting the prof. in person.
TanKpb.p
Fairus ProdigyGod the Frick are you on about?
So what's the news? Are you scaring scorpions now?
Man, your laugh is more venomous than the scorpion 🦂
Hell of a job, scaring scorpions for money
Yeah we think we have pretty cool jobs. At the end of the day it helps us to better understand these animals and how we can treat incidents.
The Nature of Science scaring? They electroshock the scorpion!
They do this so idiots like you can be treated in hospitals with the right antvenoms
david z shut up
I just adore how enthusiastic this guy is in all his videos. Such a great presenter, and I imagine he'd be a great teacher and co-worker. A real love for science is pretty rare in people. I'm glad youtube lets us see people like him when they would usually remain rather anonymous and unknown outside of their fields.
Omg i just realized the guy was in smarter everyday's video of the stonefish
Edison Zheng holy crap, I just realized as well....how did I forget about the....VENOMOLOGIST
**his laugh** HOO HOO HEEE!! HEE HAHA HOHOOO HA HEEHEE!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how he always ends on bombshells lol. great!
Aussies... the mad lads. Goes out into the jungle at night in shorts looking for scorpions
Really cool experiment. Would have been neat to see your chromatogram from the FPLC to see the ratio of the two proteins in the venom.
i love the channel!! i learn so much thank you very much =)
+That Guy Pleasure, glad you enjoyed it :) Subscribe if you to see more of our stuff
Yay! Love this channel, thank you for the new video! Florida checking in - I've been stung by a scorpion. I was around 4 years old and lightly stepped on it. I must have righteously ticked the thing off because what I can remember is screaming my bloody head off in pain. Though I was 4 at the time...I'd like to think 26 years later I might have been able to suck it up. Eh, probably not. :)
+btwomfgstfu depends on the scorpion species. There are some seriously venomous scorpions in the USA. You guys have evn had deaths from these guys!
When the Stuffed Mouse "Attacked" the Scorpion "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,MY VENOM IS NOT WORKING, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
Video Starts at 0:00, thank me later.
wow thank...dont know what i would do without you
BiFF can you help me find the end please.
Oh really?
GrALV XD that helps heaps!
Is that so Captain obvious? Your keen sense of observation is simply miraculous
thanks for the hints at the start but you wrote what it was in the title of the video..
This channel defintely deserves a lot more recognition
i love his enthusiasm about his work 👌🏾
I was hopeing that was a real rat
Cane Garcia me to
Cane Garcia why?
well, its a real rat but just is already dead as to not put the animal is the pain of being stung at pinched.
Someday when this channel gets 1 million subs, I will comment that I subbed when there were only 25k subs.
Thanks for your kind words. We're trying to get some resources together to bring you some new videos
Subed!
Bro this channel died 6 years ago lol
Love this channel so much
Please, Don't stop uploading this educational stuff. Your voice is comforting too ngl haha 👌
Thanks, will let the Professor know :)
what's the point in glowing under uv light for certain animals?
+Florian Wh great question. Short answer, we dont know! Great PhD topic for some one!
Am I weird for finding scorpions quite adorable?
+ChirrupForScience Embrace your weird bc we think they're awesome too! Of course the guys in our team wouldn't say it was adorable but our resident mermaid would :)
This man knows what he's doing and doing it well .. Look how happy he is
Keep making great quality videos like this and you'll get a huge subscriber base!
+Tanner M Thanks we hope so :)
You may have the machine that goes "ping", but what about the most expensive machine? As I understand it, the director is quite proud of the leasing scheme of that one.
+Tim Sidaway Ok, way way to abstract for a dumb academic like me. Not sure I understand the question, sorry :-(
+Jamie Seymour He's referencing Monty Python, meaning of life. Unfortunately I am nerdy enough to know that.
Some silly questions from an academic here! For the analysis of the venom, what kind of detector do you have hooked up to your LC? Did you do MS/MS ID to confirm the identity of the venom as well or did you rely upon something like UV absorbance pattern with a reference standard? I'm not a biologist myself (toxicology/pharmacology here working in drug development) so am super interested in the characterisation of the venoms and their exact composition.
Do you have a published paper available on this so I can take a squiz at the methods/results?
This is Like Brave Wilderness From Coyote Peterson
Jason Goldsmith except these fellows are actually doing something not just getting stung/bit for$$
I love your videos, I was dying to find any of your films when I saw you on SmarterEveryDay. If only they were longer, nonetheless i appreciate the quality of the videos too.
+miran sabljic thanks. Yes, its a trade off on the length. Id love to do a full length film (if there is a production house out there that wants to do a doco, the team is open to it (hope nat geo, discovery channel, etc read this!) but we have been told that for youtube they need to be short.
You have quickly become one of my favorite channels! Keep up the good work
+MrBrassGears thats great to hear. Thanks for the support
so what was the point of the "what am i" intro if you put scorpion in the title...
How did you just pick it up like that by its tail?
U grab it's stinger
Not really, there is a part or its tail called the knuckle and is is whats a ttached to the stinger and can move co - dependantly, that what you opick the stinger up by. :)
U literally just explained how he did it
This is very entertaining and educating! New sub!
Really enjoying this channel! Keep up the great work
+Alyce Jackson thanks, appreciate the comments
Omg that little scorpion is so cute omgomgomgomgomg eeeeeeeee
You know.. you are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
She's extra beautiful.
i was sort of thinking the same thing...seriously pretty, dang, girl
don't be all white knight up in here
Atley, I think I'm in love with you.
Great vid as usual! You guys need to get with SmarterEveryDay and Veritasium more often so you can tap into those subscribers, I'm sure most will start following you with great content like this!
+Akram Jerab Thanks for the support. Love to do some more stuff with SED and Destin. He is a great bloke, his channel is awesome, but he is on the other side of the globe! Having said that we have discussed me going to the good ol U S of A to do some stuff with him, I just have to find the dollars to get there!
Jamie Seymour
If you keep posting regular content I'm sure the YT channel will pay for the trips. Just remember we're in the internet era, you guys don't have to be physically next to each other.
Anyway, thanks for the response and I'm looking forward to your next vid!
+Akram Jerab yes, that's true, but its WAY WAY easier to do stuff when you are in the same geographic location :-) However, I'm now thinking we could do something in the USA and Australia at the same time. Like the simpsons episode of does water in the toilet go in different directions (yes i know it doesnt but I think you get the idea). At any rate, your suggestion has got my brain working! I'll chat with the team (and Destin) and see what we can come up with. THANKS!
Jamie Seymour
No sir, thank YOU! I hope it happens, it'll be fantastic!
I love your videos, i get so happy when i see a new one in my inbox! keep it up.
cheers from Brazil!
+Mauricio Mpd Oi fantastic to hear from you and glad to hear you enjoy our videos. Oh how we love Brazil, it's on our bucketlist. So many amazing animals and research being conducted. Oh and the food and the people, the dancing....
Always interesting and video quality, edit etc superior to most youtube channel. Keep up the good work!
+L Roussaux Thanks for you feedback, I'll let the team know :)
is there any proof of this? how you scare the scorpion? is the scorpion scare all ready by you just holding it?
you know if he is scared if he try to defend him self insteed of run away or attack
DIFERENCIAS CREATIVAS proof that the scorpion was not scared/scared enough
Was that the Scorpion would have stung him since if it scared it would consider him a predator
scorpion is like "STOP poking me!!!!!" XD
id be the same Lol
Kids theese days.
thanks for uploading so much stuff lately
+Wolf Pitiz thanks for watching!!!
This is such an awesome channel. I love it when you upload something. 😀
+Laina M. Thanks! We love uploading stuff as well, although its a little nerve wracking waiting to see if people are going to like it :-)
more!
+Tim Tamas thanks! More on the way!
lol at cruelty comments. If shocking some scorpions is cruel to you (and for medicine ffs), be grateful you haven't seen anything worse in your life that you could be focusing on instead.
materiauser agreed
I think killing a Brown tentacle monster using electricity is cruel
Incredible precision with that venom collection.
These videos are so good, keep up the good work :D
+Jeppe Vendel thanks. the team loves comments like this!
in my opinion that is a baby scorpion the smaller they are the more potent only because they are not able to control there venom
that was an adult scorpion. while it's true younger scorpions don't have good control of the venom they inject, its the smaller species that tend to produce deadlier neurotoxin.
Tenebrio morio was it really wow that was tiny for an adult
***** it's about average size for a California common scorpion, if not a bit skinny.
wow those are in California i never new we had any out here thats awesome thank you
NOSTIX VASQUEZ
wtf did anyone hear that akward laugh😨😨
Amazing! It only now hit me scorpions have 8 eyes despite knowing all my life they are arachnid! Blown away! :D
+lennutrajektoor cool hey :-)
love this guy's doc. on irikanji jellys.
heres a clue its in the fucking title
Yeah.... we know. Our bad.....
Hahaha
Oh my lord.. much rather watch Coyote Peterson.
ProMc yes I agree
he already got a scorpion sting bruh
Talon his channel would be so much better if he did
ProMc because you're simple as fuck
Chauncey McGuilicutty and you're basic as fuck
I just came across your channel tonight, and its got me interested in your line of work, I cannot wait to see more of your videos, I agree with Joshua keep this up and you will have many more subscribers, you can count yourself a new fan ^_^
+Alexander Cummings thanks heaps. We seriously appreciate the support
2:50 I'm happy to hear that coming from the authority on venom. I was taught that as kid when shown the difference between our local bark scorpion and the other less dangerous cousins.
This is unnecessary cruel.
Oh shut the fuck up..
xProdergy i'm not talking to you.
JJ DV nonetheless your still bitching about it..
xProdergy Still not talking to you.
JJ DV why are you responding back? You seem really hypocritical....
That little giddy chuckle tho lol pure excitement
How come you guys have such good production value, and still lack views? I think this is a fantastic channel!
+Pope “Iamsepope” Poperino Thanks for the feedback, we're glad you're enjoying the videos. I think we're the new kids on the block and it's going to take some time to get our subs up. I think it's also about where our content is shared which will drive traffic here ie reddit, buzzfeed, wittyfeed etc
This is epic. How does he not have 1 mil subs?
I had never realized that tiny scorpions are super cute!!!
this channel has become one of my favorites. Pretty fascinating. Dr. Seymour, did u ever have any interactions with Steve Irwin? idk if that's completely ignorant to ask. but im curious, it wouldnt surprise me if u both crossed paths
+Tate Miller Yep, certainly did. I was with Steve the day he died. He was without a doubt the most passionate animal conservationist I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A pretty amazing individual to say the least. we lost an awesome bloke when he passed. CROCS RULE!
"What are you doing playing with those bugs?"
Curing cancer.
"Oh. Nice"
Doctor Seymour you are amazing I love your laugh especially you really enjoy your job and have a lot of fun while being a great and serious scientist. You are an example!
Thanks for your kind words. We think Jamie is pretty special too. Will pass on your comments to him. We know he will be chuffed (happy).
Ooooh thank you guys
Thanks. We will.
This channel is amazing
+ArianaKris I think so to, but I could be just a tad biased :-)
Scorpion to its family: "I GOT ABDUCTED BY ALIENS I SWEAR"
Really great content! Thank you! :)
5:14
Scorpion: STOP ! HEY HEY!! YOU STOP SON OF A !! STOP POKING MEEE !!!HEY YOU LITTLE BRAT STOP POKING ME!!!
Don't think I've ever seen a guy get so excited about finding a potentially dangerous animal before.
at first when he gave the description i thought the animal was a dog then i figured out it was a rabbit
Awesome work!
This must be the coolest channel of youtube!
2:25 scorpion was like 'why you bully me'
Another amazing video!
+Samuel M thanks! Appreciate the support
The bike race music brings back beautiful memories from years ago 😩
I love your laugh so much lol.
your giddy demeanor earned you this swedish sub
That violet light is soo good.
i love how they put it back after the experiments
+Sanyuj Gupta :-)
An ad with Rhett and Link played before the video and I got so excited for a sec thinking that this was one of their videos lol.
Great video! I wonder how the prey venom profile changed over this period. If the scorpions were getting regularly timed, pre-dead meals over those eight weeks, would you expect their prey venom proteins go down? Could you test that by giving them live meals at irregular time intervals (for 4 wks) tested against pre-dead meals at regular intervals (for 4 wks)?
+Arshad Khalid Thanks for the comments! Love your idea (we have thought about this as well). I'm presently looking for a PhD student to do EXACTLY that sort of thing. GREAT question!
Having grown up in the most callous times of animal-experimentation I was deeply to see the Doc let that scorpion go in the end.
I'm pretty sure that was just for show but liked it anyway. Because maybe it's not. One CAN expect good things from a guy actually using a machine that goes "bing"!
Really interesting and educational. Hoping for more videos and being your student one day
+Nash Legilis you keep liking them and we will keep making them:-) Always oin the lookout for good students!
I found this channel after seeing the frog heart video, and it's the best one out there if you're interested in venom, I'm recommending it to everyone.
This channel is fantastic.
+kingjacoblear Glad you think so :)
You are most welcome! Keep up the good work!!!!
Wonderful video! Thank you!!
+Michelle Molash Thanks you for raking the time to watch and comment :)
bioluminescent tumors would have great applications in the world of Neurofibromatisis research. Apart from having my 6yr old scanned by mri every 3 months to monitor his multiple tumors, we could just run a black light over him. Is the venom specific to certain tumors when it attaches? It's something I'm keen to follow. Great work on the videos and channel, great to hear a Aussie while I'm in the U.S.
+Patrick Donaldson at this stage it appears that the components are not cancer type specific, but the work is still in its early stages. Sorry to hear about you child, the TNOS team sends our best
