Legend says if you dont put super 8mm sound and crop the mask, the footage automaticly converts to t2i footage
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
@@SweetLouPhotography can you watch this short video on Super 8 video that I made ua-cam.com/video/5_ykXdYHHfw/v-deo.html
ayo the t2i is my only camera 🥲
The thing I find so interesting about any Super 8 footage in a modern setting is that it immediately takes it to a different time. I think often we envision our modern world/cities as slick and very "high-definition" (this makes no sense), but when it's shot on Super 8 it takes that conception away, and the shots in Times Square could be from anytime in the 20th century. Neat video
I literally had the exact same thought...
We look at jerky, silent, black and white film and immediately think of the early 20th century, we see Super 8 and think of the '60s or 70s, or video camcorder footage and remember the '80s and '90s.
For all intents and purposes, anything shot on an HD or 4K smartphone today looks as vivid, sharp and bright as the real world. They don't impart "character" on the image like analogue formats did. I wonder how that will affect people's perception of the past in a century's time? Will the 2020s feel more recent or perhaps more tangible to people in the 2120s, than the 1920s do to us?
This camera seems to be good for shooting a nostalgic old-timey scene
I sometimes forget how much I love shooting on 8mm and Super 8mm film until I see videos like this. Thank you for the inspiration. Overall, this really is a great video.
oh yeah, this look cant be replicated..
yeahhhh for real!
There's a new Super 8 simulator app that looks like the real thing.

Did anyone find the app?

Very cool video! I'm planning on starting my first Super 8 short film later this year and stuff like this is super inspiring.
The image that camera displays is eye porn, wish I could grab it for a lower price lol
Hey I bought one from eBay for £20 which is about $25, can get pretty cheap and cool expired super 8 film too
@@emc7056 omg that’s amazing ,, i hope i can find one for a similar price someday too :)
Love this format and style of video. Type of laid back content I flock to on UA-cam
This entire video is so charming and the footage is splendid. Subscribed
Thanks so much, you're too kind :)
I love your stuff dude. Always something new and interesting. Keep it up!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy the variety haha
I love the retro colour saturation - love love love!
I love the quality and it still fits for the 2020s!!!
I cannot push the importance of shooting more than you think you need. I took a roll with me on vacation and it was great but a great 50 snippets of 3 second clips lol
Definitely!! It looks so much shorter than I thought, even after reminding myself while filming to shoot longer
Really dope bro, I use to live on Middletown road as well so this hit home
I dipped my toe into Super 8 a couple of years ago. It was such a fun experience. I too geeked out on Analogue Resurgence. Great video and well shot. Subscribed.
Noah is awesome!! I love his channel, big inspiration. I actually just sent out another cartridge of film!! So I'll probably upload that vid in the next 400 years or something lol
@@SweetLouPhotography Brilliant. Yes, he definitely helped me out when I started but even 5en, he was relatively new on the scene. Great to see his channel grow.
I’ll be sure to keep an eye on your channel.
I have other super 8 / 8mm projects on my channel amongst a billion other things.
Keep in touch 😀
Thank you for this video!
Amazing shots 🥰
That 2020 ball drop is even more timeless now
I like that you felt the need to give the definition of the word juxtaposition. Lol. It's like the word of the day on Sesame Street or something.
I’ve had some pretty unsuccessful super 8 experiences so far, always really wanted to try it... about 15 years ago I found some sealed rolls of Kodachrome in the basement, expired in the 70’s. I took them to Walmart who amazingly still processed super 8 film at the time but what I got back was essentially blank leader. I don’t know if they actually processed it as Kodachrome or if they thought it was E6 and that ruined it. I still have one more of those 70’s rolls I shot in 2005 but now that Kodachrome is donezo, it’d have to be processed as black and white.
Fast forward 5 years, late 2010 I still really wanted to try this so I bought 2 fresh new rolls of Ektachrome and immediately put them in my freezer. Spoiler alert: they’re still in my freezer. I shot one at the time and never managed to get it developed, just too expensive, but I shot around town a bit. The other box is still sealed. I’m sure it’s still good as it’s been cold stored for 10 years but at this point I’m not sure I wanna take my chances. I do have to wonder how well the film I actually shot held onto a latent image for 10 years. Also that roll kodachrome from the 70’s I shot in 2005, I don’t know if there’s any hope of it still having an image I literally shot while I was still in middle school but if anyone wants to experiment with home-dev in a bucket using b&w chemicals, they can have it.
Buy a digital cam. This is not for you, hahaha. It will save you time and money.
That train pan shot got me like T o n e s, c o m p o s i t i o , by far my favorite. also for a short film wouldnt be kinda better 16mm? looks so good i love that look, music videos on 16mm are lit af
Thanks much! I really like that shot too. 16mm probably would be easier? But I was really feel like the look of Super 8 based on what I saw on Noah's channel haha
Wanna pay for it?
Beautiful handheld style man 🖤
Thanks much!
Super enjoyed it!
Love Noah and love super 8. I've been trying to wind down on shooting super 8 because of how much it was costing me, but I love to see other people get into it and the things they capture. Really like how well the 50D was able to capture those neon lights at night. Whenever I know that I'll be shooting at night, I usually load my camera with 500T, so it's helping to see how versatile 50D is
Noah is the best. Glad to hear you dig his stuff! And yeah, I was surprised with how some of that night stuff came out!
@@SweetLouPhotography 😘
Great to see you also trying out Super 8. I also got into Super 8 lately and did two short clips so far. A lot of fun but really costly over here in Europe. Love your Super 8 clip. Give the tungsten balanced films a shot. I only tried 200T and 500D so far. They are amazing.
I made a bigger project since this experience, where I shot on 50D and 500T. Very excited to put that one out there. Appreciate ya!!
Sweet Lou Photography looking forward!
Beautiful shoot! Want to see your short film now. I have some super 8s but waiting to get film to shoot
thanks so much!! My short film is on my other channel here: ua-cam.com/video/KWWbHozwqVk/v-deo.html
Great fun video man! You’re hilarious Glad you’re getting into it. I’m looking to get a canon super 8 camera for my vacation soon and was just going back and forth with different super 8 cameras. So far I am leaning on canon XLs. Probably gonna look online on eBay or Craigslist?
love this
Thanks for this!
GORGEOUS
That Super 8 gives it such a dope vintage vibe🔥🔥🔥I need a music video I’m in NY
I'm super surprised at how well the camera and film performed during those outdoor night shots
Yeah it's pretty wild dude
My thought as well since Sweet Lou was using 50D!
Man, just bought a super 8 camera and this popped up. Super hyped to see what I can do with it. The 50T held up pretty well in the dark for it being only 50iso
Best of luck shooting super 8, it's a blast!
@@SweetLouPhotography Thanks!
I literally just bought this camera & film, excited to shoot it!

Funny commentary! Subbed! Hey, do you color-grade the 8mm footage at all, or just use the lab-scanned footage?
Dude that's actually super impressive for a 50t film omg, film was daylight or tungsten? is it more expensive with more iso? im actually impressed on how much footage you can get with this.
I was shooting on Vision 50D, which is Daylight film. The prices slightly vary based on the 'flavors' - though Ektachrome is wayyyy more expensive than Vision
💛💛
seeing a smart phone on a old style 8mm film is pretty epic imo :P
Every 8mm footage... Me holding out my left hand to block the view of the perf gate.
Yes Sir.
DAYUM SON WHERE’D YA PRINT DEHYUS!
Yup, make your shots count and chose your film wisely
Hi men I have a question. I own a Canon Auto Zoom 518 (8mm). And I used it once, i used a 50D Vision but I have an issue. After recieving my digital footage I found out that like 2/3 of my footage is overexposed. 1/3 of the usable footage looks pretty good but the other 2/3 is just white (I was recording on a very sunny day). Does this mean that 50D is not good enough for these heavy sunny days or do you think it has to do something with my super 8 camera? I need your help. Thanks.
ok you sold me im buying a 514xl-s now
How do you get it from the film to digital ??
Really love it! I was wondering, did you switch the button on the camera to tungsten when you were shooting at night? I’m new to this, just bought my first super8 :)
I only switched based on what film was in there-- so I set Daylight film (in my case Vision 50D) to the daylight setting, and in my recent Super 8 when I was switching back and forth, I used Tungsten for the Vision 200T film. I made a bts vid about that process on this channel, and the short film is over on my other if you're interested in the camera itself and what it can do :)
Also, completely forgot to add. Noah from the channel Analog Resurgence is a champ, such a great resource for super 8 info. Best of luck with your camera!! Would love to see what you make
Sweet Lou Photography Thank you so much, I’ll check out Noah and your other suggestion! I look forward to using it too :)
Hi, I like the 8/16/33 mm look. But is there cheap alternative? Getting the footage developed and digitized is hardly affordable if you want to shoot a full length analog film (and dont want to use pseudo-analog digital filter.)
Just put in my order for the 310XL! Can't wait! Where did you get your film developed?
i sent these and all my other carts of super 8 to pro8mm in cali, they do good work (but are a little pricey, not too sure of many alternatives -- also not sponsored)
ALSO 10/10 INTRO
hahaha thanks for supporting my first takes
Excellent! What stock did you shoot with?
Hey! Cool video- I really liked it! I have been shooting super 8 this summer, and I am wondering how do I tell when the cartridge is full? I feel like I have been shoot since forever.
Hey there- thanks, glad you dig it. A 50 ft cartridge at 18fps should give you like 3.5 minutes. Your camera should have a meter on it somewhere saying how many feet you've used. But mine doesn't offer any resistance once you've finished the cartridge. On my second film, I actually missed a shot or two because I kept recording after I hit the end of the cartridge. So after that I was pretty careful to monitor how many feet I've used, and tried to keep a rough timer in my brain. Best of luck with it!! Super 8 is a blast
Amazing video! Did you have the lab color correct or did they process it flat and you color graded in post?
Hey there, thanks so much. I actually had Pro8mm handle the color (I believe they grade it standard rec709)
I just found my dad's almost unused Canon 514XL ,so interesting to learn how to use it
Love me some Vision Film! No other look like it. What did you scan the negative as? HD or 4K?
I had them scanned as 2k actually, through Pro8mm
1:59 This is the VHS camera app
Born of Osiris !
You've got a one way ticket to hell with open arms to damnation!!!!!
How do you export the footage for editing?
love the video! who did your processing/scanning?
I sent mine to Pro8mm (not sponsored lol)
@@SweetLouPhotography the colors, the definition... i guess its the best s8 ive ever seen. amazing
Greetings , what’s the filter you’re using for the in between videos ?
what is that old camera you use not super8 that with og look like vx
May i ask what specs? Like film stock?
hey! greetings from Brazil. ❤
I really loved the video and I laughed many times with you.
I just bought my canon 310xl and I'm in doubt about the film: I'm looking to buy the 50D film, but, have you done all the footages with the "lamp' or 'daylight' switch? I am so confused! thank you!!
Helllllo from the northeast in America-- I have a full super 8 beginner's guide here, hope it helps: ua-cam.com/video/wDEV6_gM9Wk/v-deo.html (too long didn't watch version: you gotta look up your camera, my particular one has a little orange filter in there, so when I flip my switch it's moving the orange filter in so that tungsten balanced film shot outdoors doesn't look blue
What camera is used filming old james bond film's, predator, Rambo. Because movies now days are so bloody dark and miserable looking.
Where do I buy super 8 film?
I’m just wondering, where did you developed your film? It’s so gorgeous!
Thanks very much!! I sent it to Pro8mm. They did a really beautiful job, and honestly developed it pretty quickly too. It definitely is a little pricey though. (also not sponsored by them or anything)
@@SweetLouPhotography Thank you for the information! Great video by the way!
@@SweetLouPhotography what would be considered expensive? I hear a lot of people saying that but I can't find an actual price!
Thanks :)
@@yomansup so it all depends on what you're working with-- roughly speaking here, standard color negative super 8 film is about $30 (ish) per cartridge. Then developing ranges depending on the resolution you want. For 4k overscans, it's between $75-100 per cartridge in my research.
Is it a 4:3 aspect. Also how much does a roll of film cost and to get it processed?
it would be 4:3 if you crop the sprocket holes, I didn't so it appears slightly more 16:9ish here. I got it processed via pro8mm (not spons) you can check their prices on the website, they vary depending on your needs (resolution, color correction, etc)
Super 8 more like Super great!
mind = blown
I wonder with the focusing, always with not clear images, why?
I don't mean to be rude but is it hard to get things into focus?
Or was ist more of a stylistic joice ? :)
You ,don't need a camera store , you can develop the film yourself all you need is a lomo tank & some color chemicals plus a dark bag.
i need one SO BAD
you're always welcome to use mine :)
what is the make and model of the camera?
did he use the cca orange filter?
I just got a Minolta XL 401. how do I go about getting my film digitized? I want to make short films and home videos bc I have a baby on the way.
I used pro8mm (not in any way affiliated with them, I just think they do good work) I had them develop and scan all the super 8 I've filmed. I would do some homework though, as there are other options out there. I know there are few places in Cali and NYC that still process super 8. Hope that helps
Question, so how do you get the footage out and on to your phone or how do you get it off the camera period and edit it ??? Can someone tag me and let me know
I sent my film out to a processing lab, they returned the digital files to me on a flash drive. I went through pro8mm, there are other services out there but I really like the work they do. They did a fantastic job with a quick turnaround and tons of customization options (like the overscan, which gives the sprocket hole on the side you see in this video) hope that helps
I came from watching the 2011 J. J. Abrams movie
where did you buy one ? i’m thinking of getting one :)
I found mine on ebay, rolled the dice. It's a beater, the power zoom doesn't work at all. And if you watch my newer vids, I explain the piece that controls the zoom broke off too. But it was cheap, and ancient. And not in great shape, so I'm not shocked lol.
How did you power the light meter as I'm having trouble finding a 1.3V battery?
My model actually takes 2 AA batteries (they go in the slot where you insert the cartridge of film) and they actually power the camera/light meter.
Howdya find it with your glasses? I have to take mine off to see the damn finder.
I dunno hahah I just kinda smoosh it up against the glasses lens-- that's how I shoot all my cameras though. I have tried adjusting diopters for my eyesight and it just never quite feels right.
dang I can't even see the damn thing with my glasses on. Maybe because I am long sighted. @@SweetLouPhotography
Super 8 👌🏻
appreciate you immensely
What camera are you using exactly and how can I get it?
Canon 514 XL, check ebay
Thank you for making this video!! NYC + super 8 film = a fuckin mood. In the video you mention not using the right film for the dim light shot at brunch (i think?). I want to buy a super 8 (310 or 514 I'm not sure yet) but I don't quite know where to start. How did you find out what specific film to use for specific light-scenarios? I'm currently researching on my own, but I'm overwhelmed by the wealth of information-- is there any help you can give or information you can direct me to? I'm an amateur but I'm willing to learn! 😅
Thanks for stopping by-- things I learned shooting super 8 over the last two years-- is actually a vid I want to make (prob by the end of the summer)But the short version regarding film is by looking into what film you're buying. For example, Kodak Vision3 50D. The 50D tells you the ISO (which is 50, so it's low speed which is not as ideal for indoors/darker environments) and the balance (D = Daylight so it's meant to be used outdoors, and you'll get sort of weird colors indoors, like you can see in the brunch thing in mine) Hope that helps!!
Lo and behold, I totally I forgot I had a Super8 camera in the vault. GAF xL 110. It's a simple camera...and there was still film in there. Hmmmmmm.
aaaaaaand there is still 40feet left of kodak type g ektachrome 160 film in it.
That's excellent!! I'd love to see what you come up with if you shoot on it
Is that orange squarish thing on the left normal? Or is it added or something?
That's the sprocket holes from the film
Can you do a video of how you transformed the film to digital format/on laptop
Or direct me to a video if you already have it
@@stephanieomwanda8793Hey there, yep I have a vid going over all things super 8 here: ua-cam.com/video/wDEV6_gM9Wk/v-deo.html thanks for watching!!
Shout out umbrella man
Should I export 4x3 to get the bars on the side ?
Meaning you want it on UA-cam widescreen (16:9) with pillar boxing (bars on the side?) If so, you want to edit your vid in premiere or whatever 16:9 1080, do not conform your footage to the sequence settings. You'll see the bars in premiere. Export, upload and you should be good to go.
FOOOOOOORST
you're a hero
Please try to use some kind of gimbal for the 8mm camera. Everybody would love to see stable 8mm footage because nobody is doing it.
maybe i'm already working on a vid like that ;)
@@SweetLouPhotography Whuuuut? I cant wait to see some cropped and steady 8mm footage like its just another video. Meaning no gate.
@@SweetLouPhotography There is a comforting quality with film footage when viewed fully cropped. An hopefully stable.
Why ever do so many people posting 8 mm on UA-cam show the sprocket hole, either real or fake?
Super 8 is better than digital fir stuff like this. Would be cool to do a VLOG on film but that would be expensive.
Have, you worked with, 16mm silent film Before?!?
I haven't shot on 16mm yet, I do plan on trying it out though!
Whats camera?
analog video has tracking issues, too much noise on the bottom and it affects color noise(amplifies it). get that fixed in nearby electronics repair shop
heh...
How did u digitalize the film?
I sent it in to pro8mm for dev and scan
