The need to get permission for major changes applies whether you're performing a cover song or making a recording of a cover song. There are some things, such as tempo and key, that you can change as a way of taking artistic license, but anything that alters the fundamental bones of the song, including changes to the lyrics or melody, requires that you get in contact with the song owners first." - Jamie Davis-Ponce, Berklee College of Music.

Amusingly, it's Paul who gets his own lyric wrong here :-) He wrote and recorded it as "I *said* something wrong" not "I did something wrong". But with so many great songs to remember we won't hold that against him.
I think a lot of Paul's stories are just amusing anecdotes at this stage and the reason is simple. It is impossible to remember every days work you did after 50+ years. I can't remember what I did last Tuesday ffs. So we know he pads it out but it's still an absolute pleasure to listen to him. The man is literally a living legend.
@Strath Man thank you. I was thinking the same exact thing when Paul said that, lol. The really ridiculous thing though is this audio right here shows Elvis knew the lyrics and clearly got them right. ua-cam.com/video/JVsPLnT3WiE/v-deo.html The recording he's referencing was when Elvis was in a very extremely loose backstage rehearsal more or less clowning with the lyrics. (and Paul should understand this as an artist) Elvis knew the lyrics. So when it came time for singing it on stage, or the official recording, he got them correct.
Hi strath man i just found Elvis practicing yesterday from his thats the way it is outakes on you tube and he sang must've said something wrong, possible paul was thinking of that.
Elvis didn't get the lyrics wrong, he just changed them. Like the live performances of Yesterday, Elvis sang 'I'm not half the stud I used to be' instead of ' I'm not half the man I used to be'.
I agree, many artists who cover a song will improvise a little or change the lyrics very slightly to suit their own style and that often works better for that artist. And you have to factor in also the differences between American English and British English. I think Elvis just adopted American English and how they speak in the South especially, it sounded more natural to him probably.
It was just a joke, and had nothing to do with language, or getting it wrong. Had nothing to do with American english vs British english, or being from the South. He said it for a laugh during the song one night in Vegas back in 1969. The official release of the Elvis version that came out at that time was from a different show, and the lyric was sang correctly. The version with the 'stud' comment has been floating around on bootlegs for years, and only recently has been officially released as part of a collectors set of those first Vegas shows. Paul knows this, and has told this story in some of his recent interviews...he's just having a laugh...just like Elvis was.
@@TimmyJamesDafunnyMan nope. I have a few sound board and audience recordings of Elvis singing 'Yesterday' from Vegas in 69/70 and he made that lyric change a few times at The International.
I think hes a genuine down to earth guy, he has nothing to prove to anyone, never has never will. Great songwriter and performer and musician. i like him.
Hmmm, I think Sir Paul might have been mistaken in his recollection!!! Elvis’ recording of “Yesterday” is actually correct, it is Elvis’ recording of “Hey Jude” that strays from the original!!! But it’s all good!!! Two great, timeless, songs written by Sir Paul and covered by Elvis!!! You can’t go wrong with that!!! ☮️🖖🏽
Like someone else posted earlier, even Paul on this show got the lyrics wrong to his own song!! So easily done eh, Elvis can be forgiven, and really it wasn't like he totally changed the meaning he just re-phrased it into American English really.
Mostly he didn't record other people's songs without insisting on receiving 50% of the royalties.. This was how he could live such a lavish lifestyle and just go out and buy his dozen or so memphis mafia guys new caddillacs, Harley Davidsons horses and often home's.. Dolly Parton said in an interview how elvis wanted to cover one of her song's but because she refused to give up 50% of the royalties she decided against it, Whitney houston later covered it and dolly made close to a million bucks out of Whitney houstons version.. Hence a high percentage of song's he recorded he also earned song writing royalties on, in some cases it worked out well for both songwriter and singer, because the songwriter might have had difficulties getting anyone to record their song, so it was worth giving up half the rights to the song. You need to look at things objectively, for example the merchandising, posters, badges, guitars, toys etc were all tom parkers idea, yet Elvis also got a 50% cut of these, so it was a perfect partnership to riches beyond either of their wildest dream's. Elvis worked hard up until late 1956, all the tv, radio shows and performances to establish himself, but from that point onwards it was a case of doing what earned him money the quickest, eg movies made in 6 weeks, huge paycheck plus a cut of the movie profits, rarely doing any interviews except for promoting latest movie. The movies made that didn't have many songs didn't do as well at the box office as those with more song's, so they stuck with multi song movies, it's what the fans wanted. This allowed him to only have to work 3 or 4 months of the year. Then onto Vegas residency which meant no touring, playing in the same venue for a month and having 2 months off, it paid well and suited him. Prior to his death he'd not worked in 6 week's, his was a case of too much leisure time and too much money. Elvis was known to spend upto 2 weeks at a time in his home hardly venturing any further than his gardens, often spending several days at a time not leaving his own bedroom.. That was when he was in his mid 30s onwards, having food brought upto his room. Don't forget he had a cook, groundsmen etc, so wasn't at home cooking or doing DIY, it was a man in his mid 30s sat at home being waited on by his staff..
@@adrinathegreat3095 believe it or not... some worked in the gulf region (where the oil is) who earned way less than Elvis, were living the laid back lifestyle in their thirties...not anymore I guess
Strange how Paul always find a way to put Elvis down when he talks about him.- Anyway When Elvis did the song to a live audience he said, _I said something wrong_ The only time he said, "must" have said something wrong, was when he was doing a rehearsal of the song with the band. But he did stuff like that with others songs too as just being playful while rehearsing with the band.
@@babydollrock You can only be jealous of someone who is better than you. Elvis was the one who was jealous. They dethroned him. Priscilla said he felt defeated. Jerry Leiber said that the Beatles were second to none in every department. He said that while they evolved wonderfully, Elvis became a parody of himself. No truer words have been said.
I was wondering, but didn't bother checking. Thanks! :) I think it came from having to rapidly locate the part in the song, after bringing it up and then putting himself on the spot.
Search Elvis's Yesterday and listen to his live renditions. He sings the correct words. There is rehearsal footage of Elvis singing it, and he's not trying too hard, and he sings the incorrect words. Why does McCartney cite that one? He never seems to have a good thing to say about Elvis, post army.
Antony W Shaw because Elvis wasn’t exactly nice to them. He tried to have them banned from America using his CIA contacts. Whichever way though ... the Beatles owe their career to Elvis as John Lennon said “ before Elvis there was nothing “. They also tried to steal his manager, as did frank Sinatra, and got knocked back. Probably still a bit salty

@@soulman7429 Or perhaps he doesn't take the matter that seriously. He is the most successful songwriter in history, so I doubt he cares about faceless commenters thinking he is silly.
@@athenaminerva8954 My guess, that what he was referring to was not Elvis' physical death, but musically. When Elvis got out of the Army, he was busy making movies. The songs that he was recording didn't always have that raw energy, of his earlier music. However, the way I look at it, Elvis was evolving as an artist. He went on to prove, that he could sing anything. Most artists, who have been performing, for any length of time go through this. If you look at Paul McCartney, he evolved as an artist as well.
Both Hey Jude and Yesterday (less so) were throw away attempts by Elvis. Hey Jude, especially, was never supposed to be released. The live version was just a snippet at the end of Yesterday. Probably why he stopped singing them by 1970.
How lovely to see an icon like Paul McCartney looking and being so great. Don't know how long ago this was aired, but I loved it. I missed it back then. Sorry Jonathan. Such memories brought back. Magic, Magic songs written and played by the genius Beatle. And John and George of course. Blew me away when I first heard them on tv. Rushed home from work to see them around 6pm. "Ready Steady go" was the show, I think. Getting older. Memory you know. PS. Have to mention Ringo. For appreciation. When Ringo joined the Beatles, the beat he brought to them was made to measure. No other band sounded like the Beatles. He was the Beatle beat. No one could do it like him for them. Their timing together was magical. And you could feel their brotherhood. I think that is what made them.
Jealousy? LOL. How can a Lexus be jealous of a Buick? They dethroned him and sent him to Vegas where Jerry Leiber said he became a parody of himself. LOL.
In the official master of Elvis’ version of Yesterday from the album ‘On Stage-February 1970’ ,Elvis sings the lyrics correctly so it appears it’s Sir Paul who’s got it wrong? Maybe he listened to a rehearsal version where sometimes Elvis mucked around with lyrics? Also Elvis was certainly not ‘flakey’ in 1969/ 1970!
I am sure Paul was just thankful that Elvis at least covered one of his tunes. He covered a George song at ALOHA though.. One of the largest satellite views to this day.
This is one of the coolest appearances Paul McCartney ever did. He really shows his human side and very little of the celebrity side. I don't know, I just love this guy.
1969 Elvis Flaky?! His Live return was a triumph, Suspicious Minds was number 1 on the charts and From Elvis In Memphis album was one of his finest record!
Yep, '69 was one of Elvis's best years vocally and physically, he was in top shape. Agreed, 'From Elvis in Memphis' is when he temporarily ditched Parker and produced one of the if not the best albums- those session players and Southern Comfort were fantastic. 'Flaky' Elvis began circa 1971, IMO.
It is Yesterday the song not Hey Jude and I have listened to the song and Paul does not sing "I did something wrong" so according to the lyrics ELVIS sang it correctly
Right. Paul sang I "said" something wrong.....according to the lyrics in the Compleat Beatles. NO, Elvis didn't sing it right either. He sang I must have done something wrong, not I said something wrong. Just listened to Paul's version again, It's I "said" something wrong. There you are. Fin.
If Elvis Presley sings your song (even you Paul) -- he can sing it any way he wants to. Virtually everything he sang sold, and singer-songwriters & just songwriters were always hoping Presley would cover their songs whether the song was a new pitch or a cover of someone else's hit. Doesn't matter. As far as covers are concerned -- let's not forget Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles, (do I have to go on?) -- all covered songs by other people, artists & writers. They didn't "steal" them. Interpreting someone else's song is not easy. And some artists seem to be able to only sing their own songs and they can't sing a cover. Some artists who are songwriters have had hits only with covers: Tim Hardin's only hit was "Simple Song of Freedom," -- written & originally sung by Bobby Darin (who covered Tim's songs as well). Harry Nilsson's biggest hit was "Everybody's Talkin'" -- a Fred Neil song. Ringo recorded an entire LP of standard/covers. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis & John Coltrane recorded COVERS. Elvis didn't have to write his own songs. He was one of the few artists who was that good.
No one sings Elvis songs better than him and when he cover other artist's songs it always end up better than the original like; Blue Suede Shoes, That's All Right Mama, Mystery Train, My way, Bridge Over Troubled Watet, etc.
Elvis made many songs better...his feel for the song came through and he’d conduct his musicians to play his way... take for instance You’ve lost that loving feeling...in my opinion the best version of that song 👍 ua-cam.com/video/e7R5xxDy3QU/v-deo.html
John LaStrada ...hum... Nothing is easier than signing everybody else song... You just have to choose the one that fits you best... If Elvis did not create or write songs, it is just because he was not capable of doing it...He was not a musician...He knew 3 chords on guitar...All artists are or were capable of signing someone else song but many of them wrote their own songs...like Elton John, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, McCartney, Lennon, Robert Plant...Elvis was a great signer, and a great artist and he would be remembered, but please, if he would have had the competence of writing songs, he would have written songs...Nothing is more important to an artist...That’s why, Paul Simon is an American artist more important than Elvis for me, but I understand that many people would disagree with me, it’s o.k.
John LaStrada and I would ad this to my opinion: when Elvis passed away, he was not considered seriously... Without the body he had in his prime, he was a fat guy...and with his voice that was not as good, his clothing completely out ...many people though he was almost a joke... and that it was a shame..Everybody knows that... A signer that gets old have nothing left in terms of public consideration... Just what he was in the past... That’s the big difference between simple singner and a composer...
6:01 Elvis didn't sing, "I must've done something wrong," he correctly sang, "I did something wrong," well atleast on the recordings I've heard! Love you Paul ❤
Elvis presley sang "yesterday" right in some live performances but when he recorded his version elvis sang "I must have said somthing wrong" when it should be "I said something wrong".
A lot of Elvis fans make the rest of us look bad by making us look like whine bags who cannot take a joke and treat him like The Messiah. Leave that sort of moronic stupidity to Michael Jackson fans. Paul loves Elvis and he is just having a laugh, something Elvis was capable of too.
I don't think he was either jealous or serious here, Paul is always a humourous fella. There are many videos on YT and interviews online where Paul praises Elvis, as well as to a of other artists such as BB King, James Brown, Tom Jones, Springsteen, etc. Some were jealous, but most in awe, as w/out Elvis, their careers most likely wouldn't exist.
@@joeblough261 I have said the same about Tom Jones who I admire greatly. He has always professed to be such a big pal of Elvis but in nearly all the interviews with him he tells some silly story that belittles Elvis in some way and none of them have the ring of truth about them. Just used to big himself up.
Frank Sinatra sang Yesterday the same way Elvis sang it, though I also heard Elvis correctly sing it. Maybe, just maybe Elvis learned the lyrics by listening to the Sinatra version or vice versa? I doubt it, but who knows?
"I must have done something wrong" makes more sense in context. If you didn't know why she had gone away, then you wouldn't know for sure whether you had done something wrong or not.
It's a song about guilt. Many people feel like something was their fault even if it is unclear to them. The experience Paul is probably emotionally referencing is the death of his mother (he didn't especially get dumped or feel heartbreak in relationships at that time). He was never told that she was seriously ill and her death was kept from him for a while. It was only 10 years later he was told she had cancer and not until 30-40 years later he was told the fuller story. When you are a child and your parent dies or leaves you it is extremely common for the child to assume they were to blame, even if it's logically untrue, . This is why kids can get so messed up by death or abandonment by a parent. Paul didn't take his mother's death well, reacting unemotionally and internalising his grief, he distanced himself from others and distracted himself with music to deal with the depression.

"Many musicians don't realize that they actually need permission from song owners before changing inherent parts of the song. The need to get permission for major changes applies whether you're performing a cover song or making a recording of a cover song. There are some things, such as tempo and key, that you can change as a way of taking artistic license, but anything that alters the fundamental bones of the song, including changes to the lyrics or melody, requires that you get in contact with the song owners first." - Jamie Davis-Ponce, Berklee College of Music.

paul did it better
Elvis ruined every song he sang.
The really ridiculous thing though is this audio right here shows Elvis knew the lyrics and clearly got them right.
ua-cam.com/video/JVsPLnT3WiE/v-deo.html
The recording he's referencing was when Elvis was in a very extremely loose backstage rehearsal more or less clowning with the lyrics.
(and Paul should understand this as an artist) Elvis knew the lyrics. So when it came time for singing it on stage, or the official recording, he got them correct.
Soul Man Wasn't it hey jude he did?
Great stuff strath man i checked Elvis singing yesterday snd he actually sings. ... Said something wrong . So basically the article is wrong.
Sean Ryan he only changed the lyrics to yesterday once

0:21 what gang is that hand sign for?
It doesnt matter if Elvis got the lyrics wrong....what matters is he covered it....and beautifully

But he was very much the stud in '69/70.. it was from 1971 that he began to go seriously downhill.
No one sings Elvis songs better than him and when he cover other artist's songs it always end up better than the original like; Blue Suede Shoes, That's All Right Mama, Mystery Train, My way, Bridge Over Troubled Watet, etc.
beautifulinside&out I like Elvis but he did not cover everyone’s songs better, nice try though

ua-cam.com/video/e7R5xxDy3QU/v-deo.html

Not really. He knew he said something wrong, but he did not think it was bad enough for her to go.
