- #TonyHadley chats to Gold's David Andrews about #SpandauBallet and his amazing career!
Tony Hadley had one of the most distinctive voices of the 1980s.
As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley ruled the charts around the world with hits like 'True', 'Through the Barricades', and the brilliantly-titled (if you ask us) 'Gold'.
However, Tony revealed to Gold that he wasn't actually that impressed with perhaps their biggest ever hit 'True', and didn't think it would do that well.
Tony will be going out on tour this December with fellow synthpop legends Culture Club and Heaven 17.
Absolutely Tony Hadley was Spandau ballet great voice
This man is such a gentleman I met him in special services in Naples Airport and had a chat to him .
"Through the barricades " is just breathtakingly beautiful...my favourite Tony is a superb vocalist... Spandau had some amazing hits ...
That song genuinely brings tears to my eyes almost every time I listen to it. BEAUTIFUL lyrics.
100% - fantastic song
epic album Gary langan from Art of noise did a magical work, but it failed in uk chart i didnt understand british way ? 😢
Gary Kemp wrote the song and did a brilliant acoustic version. This B tried to Sue Gary and lost.
@@hardlines2635 he is dreadful now
Tony Hadley's discipline in relation to maintaining his 'unique voice' is admirable! I've met Tony a couple of times, and he was approachable & polite!😊
Yes a consumate professional! & thankyou also!
Can anyone tell me what much is true?
Can vouch that this bloke is proper down to earth and sound no ego whatsoever. Good to see him looking well
He was all the problems in SB
@@CarlosAlberto-ii1liNo, that was Gary.
@@CarlosAlberto-ii1li cos carlos was there haha

Gary wrote all SB songs so he was the man!! 👌🏻
@@randomelvis3359 Gary was the songwriter, Tony was the man!! That's why Gary was envious at Tony 😅
i worked with Tony for a month, and he was a absolute gent. Very down to earth and was genuine.
The Kemps had the band by the throat, naturally, but no doubt there was jealousy over Tony Hadley being the front man.
A superb voice, instantly recognised, one the best from the era.
Very true, I'm sure. He certainly didn't get proper acknowledgement in their documentary - his voice was their USP.
Just back from Nottingham & Tony Hadley was amazing. Sounded great & looked fabulous
I'm so grateful that I was in my 20's right through the 80's.
Best bands ever, best music ever, best time ever.
🎉🥳🍾🎈👯
I've also met Tony and spent a while talking to him. As others have said, absolute gent. I'd had a few drinks and was accidentally rude by interrupting him with his friends. Friendly, polite, patient and good company.
Tony is a proper old school bloke. We used to hang out together at Le Beat Route in Sleezy Soho during the early 80s. Terrific fun happy and later on, crazy mental times!
Hadley is Tory scum, so was his father, an electrical engineer for the Daily Mail!!!
Le Beat Route! Loved that place, loved the whole New Romantic phase. I probably saw you there.
@@jordsupp ❤️
I was there when Tony went in the Beat Route one night and Larry the doorman slaughtered him! Took the micky out of his suit and man bag. 😂😊
@@garywood5882 ♥️♥️♥️😁😁😁🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love him ever since like I love listening to his song..TRUE..❤❤
Tony still got his wonderful voice. Not many 80's singers are like him.
Tony will always be the voice of Spandau ballet, such a shame they never sorted their problems out
Tony was quite simply in the top 5 of best singers during the 80s
What a nice guy too !
Being one of the best singers during the worst decade in the history of popular music isn't really saying much.
@@philsurtees You've gone to the effort of replying, yet you've said f##k all
@@philsurteesHe stayed one of the best singers for more than 40 years. Does that say anything?
Having a distinct voice is instant recognition.
I was behind him in a queue in a coffee shop in london a few years back. So polite to the staff
One of the uks best male vocalists. Strong clear vocals.
Don't think you know much about singing. Nothing against him - but he sounds like he' s singing into a bucket. Terrible vocalist.
Back in the mid to late 90s I remember my dad and I being asked to play football by a couple of kids as we sat outside a music tent in Islington. Inside, Spandau Ballet were playing. At a break in the set, out steps Tony - and guess what - the kids we were playing football with were his very own. So funny. Super fun kids and a lovely dad. Great memory. Blimey, that’s nearly 30 years ago. Time flies.
he did a gig at our club where i worked in the 90s? And apart from his amazing vocals? he didnt rush off after . Had a pint after with the guys! Just a lovely funny down to earth guy who didnt need tons of equipment. Will never forget that night! A true super star !!!!
Never their biggest fan but what a nice bloke Tony is.
Me neither, but if I stick True on, I'm instantly transported back to 1983, specifically to an amusement arcade I used to hang out in which would have the radio on.
Very unique singing voice, qualified singer, a pure talent...... so very chuffed for the influence of relatives putting me in his direction 🎵🎶🎼
I'm the only person in these comments who's never met Tony Hadley and can't vouch for what a great guy he is in real life. Sorry.
Maybe someday….🤞🏼
Ach, just make up a story 😂
Im the only girl in the world who will never meet any of my rock idols. I live in Ukraine.
@@leyla.007 I hope you’ll meet Tony someday. He’s such a kind man 😊. One day that terrible war will be over …🙏🏼
I'll bring it up with him next time I see him
I met Tony in the 80s . I am a joiner and went to look at a job in his house . He and his wife were nice and normal…
Was he normal ormal ?
Sure you did. Proove it.
how big was the house?
@@purefoldnz3070 He’s a bloody Tory!
@@purefoldnz3070 it wasn’t that big to be honest . Without giving the address , it sat in a narrow lane and as far as I remember, sort of “ stepped down” at the rear …
Don’t think Gary gets the recognition he deserves, what a great song writer he was…
After the legal drama about the band's royalties, I think everyone appreciates that he was song-writing genius in the band
No TH, no Spandau.
I was lucky to see him perform with Spandau ballet in the 80s and then on his own..What an incredible voice he had 👍🏻
And still has.
@@j.schermer3523 Totally agree 👍🏻
Absolutely love Tony, comes across as a real gent and he's still one of the great voices of the 80s.
Tony Hadley is exactly the same age as Jeremy Clarkson. Just let that sink in...
Tony looks like he could be Clarkson's suave nephew 😂
Shit driver though
clarkson will be a corpse in 5 years
Wow!
64 I just looked it up. I assumed Clarkson was in his 70s
I was a secret fan. I was a Mod, but can't ignore how good all their songs are. Almost like jazz.. Terrific song writing.
Always comes across as a lovely guy / love his voice - Spandau Ballet had some of the great 80s songs 👏
Tony Hadley and Spandau Ballet will always play an important part in my life. I was such a huge fan - and still am. I remember one night at the end of the eighties: I met a girl, she took me home and we would listen to "True" all night long in repeat...
I met Tony whilst on a weekend trip to Rotterdam about 15-20 years ago. I was just standing in the square with a couple of friends, deciding where we were going next, when I looked over and about 50 yards away saw him. I said to my mates, is that Tony Hadley over there? Them being 10 years younger than me had no idea who I was talking about. But anyway, Tony must've heard me, so he came wandering over to me and just started chatting away like we were long-time friends. I don't get star struck, I've met loadsa "stars" in my time, but I was a little bit gobsmacked, just cos he was so lovely and chatty, asking what we were doing, were we having a nice time, why he was there and was just doing a bit of shopping himself. I liked Spandau back in the 80's and some of their songs, but can't say I was ever a fan particularly, but I turned into a Tony fan that day. What an absolutely lovely guy. He had no need to come and chat, he could've just gone about his day, but he made a point of coming over. It made my weekend.
Me and my friends were asked to come backstage to have a glass of wine with him after one of his gigs. Surreal experience. He’s such a lovely man!
No Spandau Ballet without Tony Hadley……..that’s for sure!
No songs without Gary’s writing. That’s for sure.
'Only When You Leave' is one of my favourite Spandau songs not 'Gold' or 'True'.
The vocals on earlier songs like 'To Cut a Long Story Short', Chant No 1, Musclebound and Glow when his voice was as he said 'harder' were phenomal.
The sound of the 80's 🥳
I was lucky to see Spandau Ballet on their "Soul Boys of the Western World" U.S. tour and Tony sounded & looked amazing, better than ever!
Good for TH crediting his singing teacher, Pamela Dodds, @2:42 - she helped him find his voice and deserves credit. Good teachers are rare and valuable, so let's celebrate them more!
Met him at a gig in sheffield uk where i was crew. Tony and the rest were sound chatted with us real down to earth, he's a metal head. Then there was gary kemp didnt speak to us and looked at us like we were shite.
One of the greatest Artists in the industry. Still Great singer. Given me a life time of inspiration. Thanks Tony and the lads!
Tony 's voice is the sound of the band, but Gary Kemp's writing is the spirit of the songs.
You don’t say…..🙄
Tony is a beautiful man, inside and outside ❤
The band were in Maestro's in Glasgow a few days, or maybe the night that they reached number one with "True". Except Tony Hadley, who, we were told, was back in the hotel, "taking care of his voice". So he ain't lying on that count. Must have took a lot of willpower that. He missed a great "stay behind". The manager of the club was on holiday and his assistant was, shall we say, a bit more lax about things. The other band members were all sound, paid for their drinks, didn't act like prima donnas, no minders or nothing like that. Good luck to them.
'I'll fly for you' is a great song.
in my view this song sound far more catchy and classy than True ❤
Indeed. Far superior to ‘Gold’
Never a fan of his band but I do like him. He’s a ‘punter’ & remember him on a reality tv show that took a few former 80’s pop stars to the USA - He was totally cool & when one dude had a deva meltdown…he really tried to calm him down & show him they were all having a great time getting paid to have a jolly !
Where does he actually say “Live aid gig was a huge mistake “ ?.. Total click bait thumbnail !. Tony comes across really well though . 👍
No, it says his massive live aid regret - it doesn't technically say it was a mistake doing live aid. He said the mistake was not doing 'Gold', which he says as the last sentence. EDIT: I've now seen a different thumbnail, and it does have a different statement on it, which is misleading.

No PC idiocy, kept his own counsel over Brexit and Trump.
So we still like and love the guy.
I was very fortunate to spent a few hours in Tony’s company not so long back when he played in Texas. He is a super nice bloke, very down to earth; we spent hours just talking about regular, everyday stuff.
Clickbait title to make you think he thought doing Live Aid was a mistake
Actually that’s no clickbait at all. He quite clearly says that he regrets choosing not to play “Gold” at Live Aid.

I’ve always thought this! Insane to leave it out of their set.
Yeah we got it 😆
Only when you leave at Live Aid was my top three finest vocal performance of the night. Please go check it out how TH pushed his voice to the limits, how serious he was to match the album performance.
1985 I stood next to him and Martin Kemp at The Currough race course! I was too shy to speak to them but remember them being two nice blokes enjoying the races like everyone else.
I stood next to him a couple of days ago, and he was as nice as he always is and has been ❤
Saw him at butlins this year absolutely fantastic
TH will always be THE man!
Just bought Heart like a Sky, been playing it for the last week. Memories of a young man.
I remember Tony coming to Bosnia, it was a nice but surreal experience while there on posting. Nice guy.
New wave bands of the 80's Tony has the superior voice.
Was not a fan of Spandau Ballet back then, but, they kicked arse.
However, anyone who wasn't Queen had no chance at Live Aid, they just wandered onto the stage and stole the show.
Don't get me wrong most of the acts kicked arse but Queen just owned that day.😉
Queen didn't steal the show. They used backing tracks (radio ga ga). U2, Bowie, dire straits go and watch them. Knopfler on sultanas of swing incredible for starters (and I don't even like them)
That’s debatable….. Bowie was the master of charisma….. even Queen were his fan boys….. they approached him to do Under Pressure, even recording near where he lived in Switzerland to entice him in
@@CatPiss-ls4zb As much as I like Dire Straits (and I saw them in 1978 before the first album was released), I wouldn’t put them up there with Bowie and Queen on a performance level that day…..
@@CatPiss-ls4zb where did you see that ? additional keyboard and synthesizer by Spike Edney in the backstage. When I saw the show the first time I thought Queen stole the show (like a lot of people), but, years later when I looked at the show again I thought that many bands and singers were at the tops.......
Stop telling lies.@@CatPiss-ls4zb
I spotted the band in Heathrow’s club lounge on the way to the loo said hello they where very nice to us great guys wish them long and happy life thanks guys for your songs and performances top class ❤
True - The end of Spandau Ballet for me. The first 2 albums were and remain GENIUS!
What a gentleman.
I saw them on Swap Shop and thought they would be massive, Tony's voice sounded operatic, it was and is unique. Great music from great times.
Freddie Mercury was an admirer, I mean that in the best sense.
Run, Tony! RUN!!!!!! 😱
@@k.aliazad4388 I would have run like that myself but Mercury was actually a Tony Hadley fan. In fairness a lot of the other pop stars didn't have good voices.
freddie and tony were great friends, freddie took him on stage when Queen were playing in australia, so all you sick homophobes are barking up the wrong tree 🖕🏼 👑✊🏼🇬🇧
He was a great Friend of Freddie. He has said Freddie had a fantastic sense of humour and never took himself that seriously. Got drunk with him a few times and he gave him some invaluable advice regarding the industry.

No partying for TH and that's why he's still around today
I was at Live aid, and yes they were brilliant, also went to the reformation gig in Birmingham, excellent.
What a pro . Knew a teach who taught his kids and they were embarrassed by his fame. Lovely. What a gent!
This guy has the greatest voice in UK pop...Yes, I said has, not had.Good vocal discipline.... Remember that kids.
I had lunch with Tony Hadley and Captain Kirk onboard the Star Trek Enterprise. I didn’t know who Tony was at the time, but I can say that he was a genuinely very nice chap.
Will never forget live aid !!! Brilliant !!

Ah, I remember Simon Bates on Radio 1. He had a segment called Our Tune ideal for a song like True.
He's definitely an iconic voice. Not a massive fan of the band as such but very much appreciate their ability.
Seems like a genuine bloke.
"I always sound like T.H" legend.
@4:57min he mentions that at Live Aid '85, that SB never performed Gold in a rock style genre live & stated that that was the mistake by not playing that particular song whilst he was speaking on Gold Radio.....!

Agree with last comment Tony Hadley said about song 'Gold' for the Live Aid
It's so true that Tony Hadley made the band work with his unique vocals, it's such a shame that the band can't resolve their differences and perform again, what a fantastic day at Glastonbury that would be if that ever happened? Never say, never. 🤞..😁
A curious interview with a truly misleading title. He didn't ever state that Live Aid was a mistake but that in hindsight the band should have played their hit song "Gold!"
Spandau Ballet was one of the best live concerts i ever went to,incredible musicians and TH is The Voice( after Steve Perry😊)
Gold was a great track. Its something that everbody loves to get up and dance to.Spandau were a great band back in the day.Tony could reslly sing not like bands of today and all the autotune.

Tony’s a good guy ❤
I hope Tony Hanley and the kemps make up friends. That was the chemistry of Spauda ballet
The chemistry between them has long gone. Let Tony be happy with his own band, he deserves that.
Is there any more of this interview? I'd love to hear Tony's experiences doing Reborn in the USA back in 2002 / 2003
I’d have bet money after that headline to the link. That the huge mistake was wearing the bloody stupid long leather coat at Live Aid.
I hate it when videos include a snippet of the main video at the beginning. At least in this case, it didn't screw up continuity.
Good to see the lovely David Andrews still jocking - remember him from the days of Chiltern FM (The 'Hawwt FM' back in the 80s/90s.
The headline here is a mistake, he never says the Live Aid gig was a mistake he says not performing 'Gold' at the gig was a mistake. Why has the person who put this up intentionally put an incorrect statement as the header?
Nice guy!
I have been to compass point, was such a small place, surprised me,
Le Beat Route in London 1980s....brilliant times....
My favourite is Lonely Highway by Tony Hadley
I use to work with his cousin when thhey first began, she told me that her cousin was in a band and was going to be on top of the pops tonight. Never thought at that time they were going to be big and famous, as the song was not to my taste. How wrong was I
His cousin was at my school in Cheshunt and one day he brought in their first single and was showing it to all the teachers. Didn't think much of it at the time but a month later I realised that the band on the radio was the same one he had been talking about!
Ive never met him. I met stew pot out of Grange Hill once if that helps
Live Aid was in 1985, so next year is the 40th anniversary
Yeah, but the host was talking about BAND Aid first, not the Live Aid gig. And Band Aid was 84, so he's correct here.
Gary was jealous of him, very like Paul Simon jealous of Art. The singers made the songs, and the songwriters got lost in the mix
