The footage of Nik's performance at Live Aid is still one of my "instant time machine" experiences...i remember the day and the version of "me" at that time in a way that few other things can do.
Yep! It was such a a notable world event, it sticks. And cable to watch it was still so scarce for us, young and poor just starting out with dodgy apartments, that we went to the local bar/restaurant to catch a glimpse of it.
What I find irritating is that those artists from the 80s who had really big hits and generally great music are almost all long forgotten and not had a hit beyond the 80s in most cases (madonna, MJ, Prince the exception) YET there are a ton of modern 'artists' like Beyonce, Diddy, Bieber, Timberlake, Rhianna, usher, jay-z, Kanye west, Shakira , Eminem , Miss Elliot that have had the odd track that's been ok, if that's your thing but these people have been around for the best part of 20 years and not quitting soon, how is this possible, why are these people still relevant and yet the brilliance of the 80s isn't? Why couldn't the 80s artists continued for a lot longer than they did?
I recently watched the live aid dvd from start to finish. Yes, he looked nervous at the start, but I thought he had done ok, and you could tell how relieved he was at the end that he had pulled it off so well
Saw Nick few years ago in a tiny venue in Wellington NZ doing an acoustic set. He's still go it. It was rammed, and he put on an amazing show. Such an accomplished singer, composer and player! I also saw him on the riddle tour, the second live act I ever saw. I was amazed how much he rocked it up and what a great guitarist he is.
I'm a child of 60s n 70s. There was so music to choose from in 80s. I loved all sorts but I bought the riddle.. in those days male pop stars were girls faves. But i wanted to listen. I was amazed. Nik may never admit it but his songs were brilliant. I loved my LPs. Hopefully still in the loft of my rented out flat up north...so having bought a ticket on the 1984 tour.. bought HR and Riddle on cd. I've not listened for 30+ years. HR on the way to work.. i sang along. The words must have embedded in my brain. Human Racing the song.. is just famtastic. I actually got to work chilled and back to who I was in 1984..
What a great interview. First of all, the guest -- Nik -- is fantastic. But the interviewer is excellent as well and really makes this whole thing work. Well done!
This interview reminded me what a great artist Nik is. I went and watched a few of his other videos on youtube. The 2012 Shepherds Bush performance of "Bogart" is awesome. Always loved that song.
Wonderful interview and he is ageing extremely well 😍 Nik's music was on heavy rotation whilst growing up in the 80's when most of my pocket money was spent on many Nik Kershaw vinyl singles 🎶🎸🎹🎵👩🎤
Simon, he still had success with the 3rd album: Radio Musicola in a few countries, and +"When a Heart Beats" was hit last hit single in the UK getting top 30 + was aalso a hit single in Ireland, + Belgium getting top 20. + other singles from the album like: Nobody Knows was a hit single in Ireland, Italy, + Japan 😀
Saw him in Wellington New Zealand, along with Go West and Human League last summer. He was great, only wish he had been on stage longer. Bought the tee shirt!
me sorprende que a pesar del nerviosismo en ese gran escenario hizo una presentación increíble, por mi parte estoy adicto a esa presentacion del live Aid 1985 gracias a ver tanto ese video llegue a esta entrevista.
Saw him in '83 and I'm sure I remember him saying it was his first ever gig as a solo artist. It was the Cliffs Pavillion in Southend on Sea, not too far from where he was from.
talk to me Bogart….what a musical genius…plays guitar like Holdsworth and Jeff Beck…weaves in vocals like Stevie Wonder and writes amazing lyrics and hooks…hope he tours America!
Still looks great. He was a little before my time (I’m 48), I don’t remember him from my early childhood though. Don’t think I’ve seen him since the 80’s.
1.9 billion is an internet folktale Live Aid, a multi-venue rock music concert, was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for Ethiopia famine relief. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time with an estimated 400 million viewers, across 60 countries, watching the live broadcast.
Without doubt one of the best Live aid performances that day. There were some preposterous performances that afternoon and even later with the bigger stars, but NK pulled it off with a great set, defo one of the most underratted Live aid performances that day.
I remember " Old men in striped pajamas rule the world with plastic smiles ! I won't let the sun go down on me ! I won't let the sun go down !" and then remember thinking then ,when it came out ! " Not much you can do about it really mate ,if the Bomb drops , you can't out run a nuclear explosion !
Why do radio deejays always seem to have the bass on their voices turned up to such a high level? I wonder, is it a hangover from the days when most people listened to transistor radios with Mickey Mouse speakers?
Nik did a decent job, everyone must've been worried Geldof was going to throw them off in favour of his preferred inferior pro Kinnock/Red Wedge bands after he kicked Adam Ant out.
Poor Old Nick - turns up for an interview, and the interviewer turns out to be some bloke with the cheesiest 80's taste, who thinks he's the most talented man to have ever walked in the studio. The look on his face says "why do they employ these people?"
We need songs like that around now. The whole 80s ethos and vibe needs to return...

Great interview. Really helped by the host knowing and liking Nik's music.
A lovely man and very underrated songwriter
Underrated to say the least.
Not a chance is he underrated . Nik Kershaw is a songwriting genius!
I quite agree.
But he is definitely underrated & doesn't get enough recognition.

The number of meaningless ‘underrated’ comments on UA-cam is underrated to say the least
One day the world will understand
Nice interview and off course Nik Kershaw still absolutely a great artist. I do love his music from all my life and I'm 47.
I recently watched the live aid dvd from start to finish. Yes, he looked nervous at the start, but I thought he had done ok, and you could tell how relieved he was at the end that he had pulled it off so well
Nick's performance was phenomenal! Totally brilliant!!
One of my favorite album (in all music) is The Works. Nick Kershaw is a great musician.
Fancied the pants of this man when i was a child in the 80s. He is a great song pwriter and singer. He still looks great. ❤❤❤❤
I bet you dont fancy this old man now
Yeah, he really is a great songwriter. I still listen to The Riddle
I still fancy him now. He's gorgeous 😍
Some of the biggest and best songs of the decade 😂😂😂😂😂nope.
@Baldrick_dogsbody you'll be old years from now. Humility wouldn't go amiss.
Talented and humble, Nik is pure class (also, he's still as handsome as ever :)
Also, his speaking voice is lovely
Nik Kershaw is my absolute music idol! Such a talented guy
Nik has always been great I'm finally seeing him in concert on the 16th October @o2 Academy Shepherd's Bush London
I loved his music as a kid in the 80s classic songs
Nik Kershaw is one of the few people in the music industry that I'd like to have a beer with. Nice bloke with interesting stories.
Seen Nik at the Floral Pavillion last night. One of the best gigs Ive ever seen and Ive seen a shed load of bands over years. Blown away!
Nik's Live Aid set was one of the Top 10 sets of the day, easily. Please tour the US Nik!
I was about to make this comment!

Nick is a brilliant song writer.
The most underrated album and track off that album was Radio Musicola. Absolute genius work.
Can't wait to see him again at Shepherds Bush! Such a lovely guy and an amazing musician ❤
He was useless in the 80's

It's quite different but his later discography is literally a goldmine
Love Nik saw him in June in Norwich, amazing performance from an amazing man x
Killed it at Live Aid.Never skip Nik
What a great interview. First of all, the guest -- Nik -- is fantastic. But the interviewer is excellent as well and really makes this whole thing work. Well done!
Fusion were a great band from my town. Saw them many times and Nik was amazing as was Pete, Ken & Alan. Great times.
A great artist, talented and humble, remains to this day!!!

Loads of my music writing and guitar work is based around Nicks's work....awesome artist
Came across as a very decent and genuine guy.

'Don't wanna be here no more' really hits you in the feels. but these days right here right now no place I'd rather be.
NK is an 80s legend and deserved his place on the Wembley Stage on 13.7.85 he was just one superb part of that amazing day!
He may have forgotten his words but at least he didn’t do a Simon LeBon 😅😅

Sound of the 80s - happy days 😍😍😍🥲
Absolute gem. The sound of my youth. No disrespect.

Really like his songs.
Nik isn’t only a great composer but a very underrated guitar player as well. Similar style with the tremolo as the late great Alan Murphy
I did not consider Live Aid a forum for comparing talent. Anyone who participated should be held in high regard.😁🎶🎸🎶🎹🎶
Play On

His singles still sound fantastic now.
It is brilliant to listen to a great talent who is also Mr Evevyman.
Proper musician. Quality.
Nick was great, but I remember Queen being amazing, just in a league of there own.
A league of where own?
The Queen were on a level than no obe in live aid was capable to reach not just Nik.

I saw him in concert in Clitheroe in May 2023.
If Prince is a genius so is this gentleman.
Wonderful man
Wonderful 👍😊
He was probably one of the most talented people there
He’s just a humble man
The Works is also a great record
I especially like Human Racing and Don Quixote by Nik
It was the 20th Anniversary when the DVD came out, so he hadn't watched it for 20 years.

DANCING GIRLS - OH YEAH!
Wonder how wide boy would’ve featured I what he’s saying always thought that was one of his best tracks
I guess he was huge In UK?
I remember he had 2 chart toppers here but that was it.

Don't worry Nick, you are not the only 1980's pop star that was out if its depth on that stage among the 1960s and 1970s genuine legends.
U we're top
No, you literally *were not* a deer in the headlights Nick Kershaw!
Admits?! This isn't news. And of course he was . Jeez that's almost a clickbait title

He looked ‘out of his depth’ at the time, just saying.
Wouldn’t it be nice lol. Yeah that wouldn’t have worked.
I think Kershaw needs to look up the meaning of the word 'literally'.
For the millionth time, Queen was NEVER that big. Lead singer dies fame ensues.
