Can we talk about how koopas and their shells can be separated, but the same doesn't apply to IRL turtles, since it's literally part of their skeleton?

Yeah... that is soooo weird... like... for most of my life I thought turtles were like snails except their shells grew... not that dumb considering all the media I've seen about turtles either had them not mention it, or have the turtles able to leave their shells... I think there was even a kid's show where the mc is a turtle and took off his shell... and I mean very early kid's show

The funny thing is that there seem to be two distinct kinds of koopas - four-legged turtle-like ones whose shells don't come off (seen mostly in games prior to SMW), and two-legged ones who seem to be more like beaked reptile people who wear shells as clothes. My headcanon is that they are actually two different species who are not even related, though we never see both in the same game, these rules are consistent across the series.

Fun Fact: Yoshi is actually wearing shoes. Official Nintendo art shows him without his shoes. I just searched it up. So apparently he is born with shoes on.
I think yoshi born with shoes thing was just had something to do with hardware limitations or laziness by Nintendo and never bother changing the trend. Of course Yoshi has feet, I'm not sure if it's canonical that they are born with it though. The saddle is canonical a shell though.
I can just imagine them putting on their shoes before hatching lol

Just for anyone who actually cares, yes Yoshi's DO have canonical feet. They have 3 toes and a spot under the foot. all this was found from a 1998 Super Mario story / activity book.
Did it also explain why they're born with shoes on?^^

If you asked Nintendo they'd give you a response like "Oh that is a Mystery that even we can't fathom" or some other cryptic nonsense lol It's no different then when people kept asking who the mother of Bowser Jr. was.. (If you never seen the video, Miyamoto just points at himself.)
I was genuinely surprised when Nintendo revealed that the mushroom caps were actually the top part of the heads of the Toads, I had always thought of them as a kind of turban.
Especially since Toad's cap was a hat in the Super Mario Super Show. He even uses it as a parachute

Boshi from Super Mario RPG has his feet visible, and they are regular sharp-toed lizard feet. Toad's mushroom is definitely part of his head though, that's why all the toads in Mario Odyssey wear hats on top of the mushroom. Maybe they reproduce by spores and so they grow out of the ground? I think it's best not to think about it
My theory is that the mushroom is a symbiote or parasite that is bonded with the host species for life, basically like the Pokemon Paras. They are born like humans (maybe even ARE humans whose growth is stunted by the parasite) and the mushroom infects the baby as soon as it is born.
The Mario Brothers were canonically delivered by a stork, so I'm guessing pregnancy isn't really an issue here.

The most shocking part of this video is seeing Mario actually *caring* about Yoshi’s well-being.
They were in Peach's Castle, and she's a notoriously outspoken PETA member. Mario has to keep up a certain act around Yoshi when within range of Peach.
I did the exact same thing by googling Yoshi's feet without shoes and some appear normal. But this really explains why Yoshis are born with shoes for feet.

According to the SMBSS, the Toad heads were actually hats though. I remember him taking it off by the sink and squeezing water out of it. Also you can see Toad’s head briefly in Adventures of SMB3 at least once.
Debatable whether canonical, BUT! Toad’s voice from the games originates from SMBSS.

I always thought toads were just people who fell victim to Ophiocordyceps. In fact, right when he went to take his mushroom off I thought he was gonna start freaking out about how long he was under control for.
The same can be said about Pokémon, take raboot for example. Imagine the bunny taking off its “hoodie” only to end up ripping off its entire body’s skin from his neck all the way down to its toes.
After watching this the first thing that came to mind was Boshi, you know that edgy yoshi from mario rpg with his sharp shades, spiked collar/rings and torn up shoes with his clawed toes sticking out.

Ok so, according to Yoshiaki Koizumi (the guy who produced Mario Odyssey), Toads don't wear hats, that's just their heads. On the other hand, in old Mario comics from the 90's, Yoshi's shoes do indeed come off. They got three toes and some paw pad type shit on their underfoot.

Mushrooms grow as a pin and start off with their cap folded down. As the cap grows out, there is a veil under that tears, allowing the mushroom to spread spores. Perhaps Toad folk don't start off with their caps when they are born?

I always assumed that Yoshis have three toes with claws at the end, like Boshi has on Super Mario RPG.
Being that it's the only actual Nintendo game that shows that detail, that's always what I assumed would be the case.

it would make a disturbing if hilarious video for the various mario species to just "discover" how weird their cartoon physics bodies are XD example, Dry Bones can survive in lava. Chain Chomps are somehow entirely made of metal but require food. Koopas have a detachable shell (would be funny to see a koopa shell store that they're all in line to buy from XD )

It really blew my mind (more than Toad removing his hat) that Mario ordering the cheapest ambulance available was the sole reason that Yoshi didn't bleed to death after removing his shoes that were also anatomically his feet.
