Yeah... that is soooo weird... like... for most of my life I thought turtles were like snails except their shells grew... not that dumb considering all the media I've seen about turtles either had them not mention it, or have the turtles able to leave their shells... I think there was even a kid's show where the mc is a turtle and took off his shell... and I mean very early kid's show
The funny thing is that there seem to be two distinct kinds of koopas - four-legged turtle-like ones whose shells don't come off (seen mostly in games prior to SMW), and two-legged ones who seem to be more like beaked reptile people who wear shells as clothes. My headcanon is that they are actually two different species who are not even related, though we never see both in the same game, these rules are consistent across the series.
Fun Fact: Yoshi is actually wearing shoes. Official Nintendo art shows him without his shoes. I just searched it up. So apparently he is born with shoes on.

Boshi from Super Mario RPG has his feet visible, and they are regular sharp-toed lizard feet. Toad's mushroom is definitely part of his head though, that's why all the toads in Mario Odyssey wear hats on top of the mushroom. Maybe they reproduce by spores and so they grow out of the ground? I think it's best not to think about it
My theory is that the mushroom is a symbiote or parasite that is bonded with the host species for life, basically like the Pokemon Paras. They are born like humans (maybe even ARE humans whose growth is stunted by the parasite) and the mushroom infects the baby as soon as it is born.

According to the SMBSS, the Toad heads were actually hats though. I remember him taking it off by the sink and squeezing water out of it. Also you can see Toad’s head briefly in Adventures of SMB3 at least once. Debatable whether canonical, BUT! Toad’s voice from the games originates from SMBSS. So at least there’s that. In New Yoshi island for the DS/3DS The plot of it shows that there are seven star babies being the main characters that we know today known as Mario, Luigi, peach, Bowser, Wario, donkey Kong, and Yoshi meaning that the star baby Yoshi is the original and considered the one who has a house rather than just living on Yoshi’s Island

According to the SMBSS, the Toad heads were actually hats though. I remember him taking it off by the sink and squeezing water out of it. Also you can see Toad’s head briefly in Adventures of SMB3 at least once.
Debatable whether canonical, BUT! Toad’s voice from the games originates from SMBSS.
So at least there’s that. Wow, probably nerdiest comment I’ll ever write. And I want the old Mario figure in Kungsbacka, Sweden back!

In the Mario bros supershow toad used his mushroom top as a parachute

That tv show is not canon.
Toad is actually wearing the mushroom as a hat because in the mario show he takes it off and you see he or she is BOLD
Yoshi's shoes and Toad's mushroom cap should stay on permanently like in the game.
Y'know I was expecting more of something like Yoshi having super accurate raptor talons... this is far worse.

I'm glad that the hats versus head thing ended with paper jam, confirming that they're two separate worlds and in the world of Paper Mario they are indeed hats... but that's not the case for 3D Mario's world 👟😌🍄
