The songs that ABBA wrote and recorded were commonly termed as “The magic of ABBA” back in the 70s and early 80s. And their songs remain timeless. They still sound fresh and viable even today.
The songs in which they sang the melody lines in unison are my absolute favorites, they had such an incredible technique they sounded like a third voice
I’m glad you found the version with the extra verse. This was the B side to Lay All Your Love On Me released on 12” single in the U.K. in 1981. I believe the falsetto backing in the chorus is Benny.
One of my absolute favs from ABBA!!! Feeling her power a couple times plus...on the floor, shake your groove thang!!! "Keep on rockin" the cure for all!! 💜💜💜. Thank you, again, Derek!!!
Dereck, this was another one they performed live (and flawlessly at that) for Dick Cavett in 1981. Frida is particularly amazing and this is one of the few you can clearly discern Benny and Bjorn backing up the vocals. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/nf7xZhzgF7A/v-deo.html
In Australia, this was an A-side, top 10 hit, the second single from the album. Their last top 10 hit in Australia. Their Australian record company delayed releasing Super Trouper as a single to release this one instead, with The Piper as the B side.
really nice to see you giving the Super Trouper album some attention as its coming around to its 40th Anniversary of release. You really need to take a listen to 'Our Last Summer','The Way Old Friends Do', 'Happy New Year' (which has an actual video for its English and Spanish versions) and 'Andante Andante' (also recorded in English and Spanish). There are also two songs that didn't make it to the final album, 'Put On Your White Sombrero' and 'Elaine'.
Maybe you didn't know that quite often especially when they were playing at big venues and on some of their albums they had two synchronised drummers ola brunket and per lindvall with a full orchestra
Omg I haven't even watched yet but I'm so very excited for your reaction. I loooove this jam! "So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star. Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar." I try to channel this attitude at every party I attend lol
Greetings from Australia 🐨😃✨👍 The chorus is *also* sung by Frida (not only Agnetha). This is a great example where B&B bring Frida & Agnetha's voice together so well, that it becomes what is known in ABBA fandom as the '3rd Voice', meeting Frida's mezzo-soprano voice and Agnetha's soprano voice together - singing the same notes 😁🎶👍 This song got into the Top 10 in Australia as a single, but for some reason, our popular retro-music radio stations never seem to play it these days (well not when I'm listening to the radio 😉). It was only ever called 'On And On And On' in Australia, and I've never heard of it being released with any other title around the world. However, ABBA's wonderful recording engineer: Micke B. Tretow would often get the job of giving ABBA songs a working-title if the final (or any) lyrics weren't ready for when they started to record the music tracks, so Micke would sometimes give the songs a title to what the music inspired him (sometimes funny/daft ones too, like 'Mr Sex' for ABBA's 1974 'King Kong Song' from their 'Waterloo' album 😆💖👍). One of the best and reputable places to do research on ABBA, is Australia's Ian Cole's 'ABBA Omnibus' website, to find out what *was* and *is* the case with ABBA information (he's helped to write and sub-edit official ABBA linier-notes for re-releases of ABBA's albums, and also helped good conscientious fan-writers with their books, like Sweden's Carl Magnus Palm [another reputable source of ABBA history to refer from 😃👍].).
I think I’ve already recommended it a dozen of times but PLEASE you have to react to the 80s gem ‘One Night in Bangkok’ by Murray Head. It’s from the musical Chess written by Björn and Benny after ABBA disbanded.
Thanks for another great ABBA response! From 1980 onwards Super Trouper is my favavorite album. Very special to see you 40 year’s later enjoys as well. There is a live version of this song (1981) where instrumentation is the same but different. It’s live at ‘David Cavatt show’, which has also great live versions of other songs (e.g. Slipping through my fingers..). This album version is very slick, live you can see the fun of band and ABBA....... and it rocks even more than this version. Love both versions, but live the instruments are ‘just fun and makes me happy’. And Frida missing a part of the lyrics is the only time she missed a line in all live performances I saw on UA-cam but still all smile and keep having fun!. You’re ABBA responses are remarkeble as you pick up details and that’s what makes ABBA songs that great and even after 40 years I can listen to certain instruments and hear something new, or a hidden background vocal. You could listen to versions on UA-cam where e.g. they focus on ‘background vocals’ and you hear lines which I heard but not in full and when you hear it you’re aware of all they did to get a song sounding this great and interesting. Thanks ABBA and hope you will release the new music you’ve recorded soon. Dereck, all the best and thanks for all your reactions!!
@@dorojessy6932 it would exceed 3 minutes hence they decided to cut that verse in the released single. Radios only play songs less than 3 minutes, ideally 2:30.
Holy crap, thank you. I have only every listened to this.. never watched the video. I was blown away by that last part. I LOVE ABBA, and I love to find something I have not heard, and I know their little known songs. Thought I was going crazy, lmao. 😂😂 Thank you again!
The first time i heard this song back in 2002 when the definitive collection CD came out and on and ond on was an instant favorite of mine. It's inspired by the beach boys track i think. So many hooks in this track, whenever you put the needle in the song there's a hook, the genius of ABBA!
You have delved so deeply into the ABBA catalogue, and yet as you said, there is still so much more to discover! I love when you listen to an ABBA song for the first time and find that excitement and joy in the music! It's so great! More from the "Super Trouper" album: how about "Happy New Year" in English and also the Spanish version "Felicidad." I'd love to see your reactions to those. :-)
TQ Dereck for reacting to the Super Trouper album. Yes, indeed a strong album. Please react to every single track off this album. You will be Amazed. Start with Happy New Year, The Way Old Friends Do, Andante Andante & Our Last Summer.....I will await patiently...
This is from a live show. THAT is what you should watch. This is their closing song from that concert. The reason you should see it is the instrumentation; 2 drummers, 2 keyboard players, 3 guitars, 1 bass player, 4 extra backup singers. Their stage shows were way over the top in their time.
Allways fun to hear your reactions on ABBA! Please, go for Put on your white sombrero, previously unreleased track for the Super Trouper album. It has some nice spanish/latin wibes ABBA style. je suis française et j'ai tous les albums du groupe ABBA, j'aimerai Dereck que tu écoute la chanson ( the way or freinds do) que j'adore et merci pour les belles réactions que tu fais, j'ai vraiment adoré les réacs de Mylène Farmer
Super Trouper is an awesome album. In Australia "The winner takes it all" was the first single (big hit), "On and on and on" was the second single (big hit), then "Super trouper" was released as the third single but it bombed, so no further singles from that album came out. Shame, since other countries made "Lay all your love on me" a big hit
the "minister" is a government minister. He alludes to all these things that are going wrong, and she asks him how he knows this. He looks around carefully and then says he's "a minister, a big shot in the state." She replies "boy, I think that's great" thus ending his pick up chances. It takes place in a bar or club.
'Minister' in this context has nothing to do with the Church. It means a Government Minister, who works for the State. That's why he calls himself a 'big shot in the State.' The backing vocals are referencing 'Do It Again' by the Beach Boys specifically. Mike Love, who co-wrote the song, covered 'On And On And On' on his debut solo album.
I started liking ABBA because a Beach Boys concert last year. They opened with "Do it again", and I had an epiphany. That song brought me to On and On and On, and from there I had to listen all abba songs
I agree although maybe a church minister who’s a big shot in the state might fit as an interpretation given the dark themes here; entanglement of church and state.
Hey Derek - around 5.55 into the song Where u talk is the 3rd verse that was omitted from the original song release - this video version was finally released in stereo on the Super Trouper delux version - thanks for reacting - there was a live album released in 1986 - now deleted which has an awesome live version - sending u kindness from Australia 🇦🇺 👍😷😊
A not well known Abba song you should check out is White Sombrero! Great Frida vocals for two verses, Agnetha joining in for the second chorus and the balance of the song. Ps. Kissed the Teacher is also a great song.
Please no. Sombrero was bumped from the Super Trouper album, and was not even released as a B side. It's a spectacular folly. However, it is fascinating because we can hear how hard ABBA tried to make the song work, especially the vocals. But it just didn't work at all, in fact the vocals hide how insubstantial the song is. It would eventually be reworked and find new life later on as Cassandra.
In People Need Love, So Long, On and On and On, and Rock Me and Does Your Mother Know they are taking part in Glam Rock one could say. Look and listen to Slade, music and costumes. Very similar vibe. Most iconic song of glam rock is probably Ballroom Blitz. So Long and On and On are great rock anthems.
Trendy muso's never really gave Abba their kudos back in the day, considered to poppy to be good but their popularity lives on. Oh and another ask for your reaction on Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody (live 1965 version), one of the best vocal performances ever. Also watched your reaction of Dolly Parton - excellent - try Crazy by Patsy Cline, a shiver up the spine by a late great
You used the good version, with the humpty-dumpty verse.👍🏆. Me and I, is my favorite track from Super Trouper album. *a lot of people do not know that "Super Trouper" is the brand of stage spot lights that illuminate performers on stage
I've mentioned this on other react videos. This and Visitors were both REALLY big in gay dance bars. Especially when it was close to Last Call, and you've been drinking all night. ON and ON and ON!
ABBA is just one the best pop groups ever they're just pure magic. Wherever they recorded
This song topped the US Dance Charts along with Lay All Your Love On Me and Super Trouper. Such a gem indeed!
Top ten in Australia too.
Just for the record, this is a dual vocal by Agnetha and Frida throughout the entirety of this song.
Apesar dos vocais serem duplos os vocais da mezzo soprano Frida são muito proeminentes nesta musica!
The songs that ABBA wrote and recorded were commonly termed as “The magic of ABBA” back in the 70s and early 80s. And their songs remain timeless. They still sound fresh and viable even today.

This is clearly Benny's homage to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, one of his heroes.
And the song "do it again" specifically
Mike Love from The Beach Boys did a cover version of this song (the ABBA version is better).
