Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another ABBA reaction music video with "Head Over Heels." Can't believe this one almost got away from me, but ABBA never fails with it's catchy melodies and hooks. Instrumentation is experimental again but that's The Visitors album as a whole. See what I have to say about this one!

A well known fact is that the bloke that Frida crashes into in the middle of the first chorus was the well known director of 90% of their videos Lasse Hallström of films Cider House Rules and Chocolat...

The harmony between their two voices, A’s one and F’s one, is probably one of the most beautiful chance/luke song’s world, in general.
Chance, because there is certainly a question of coincidence. But then, it's something that the band has worked on, and worked on thoroughly. It's on the level of perfection.
I don't know the band that well, although I've always liked them.
But I could see from a compilation box that at the beginning, it was more the two men who were singing. I guess it was until they discovered this perfect harmony.
Perfect, yes. That's the stamp, the signature of the group.
(Well, not only that, by the way).
And as incredible as it sounds, 40 years later .... it hasn't changed (I've only listened to one of their new songs so far).

vocally Agnetha sings up a diminished 7th and then immediately descends quickly chromatically with perfect intonation. good luck any pop singers today doing that so accurately and effortlessly...

When these two voices come together... That is what musical heaven is defined as... That right there! I know I've said it before and I'll say it again it's why I cannot wait for the new ABBA songs to come out this year they've been promised to us and promise to us and promise to us but Bjorn said this is the year I cannot wait I'm sorry they can top charts all around the world instantly with anything they probably put out these days (except the US of course, because they have no clue and that's their loss I feel I feel unfortunate that I live in a country where they don't understand what ginuwine amazing masterpiece musicians are) but yeah these folks are going to smash it when they release new music eventually!

The video for "Happy New Year" was filmed in Lasse Hallström's apartment. Since he directed virtually all their videos, it was easy to simply use his own apartment for that video.

one thing i noticed that a lot of people overlook is that the chorus uses a technique called counterpoint, which is when 2 lines of independent melody intertwine harmonically! if you listen closely the vocals and the synth during the chorus are 2 different melodies, both good and functional on their own, but that harmonize like crazy! the spanish/tango sound comes from the raised 7th degree, which adds a unique flavor to the song

Along with 'Two For The Price Of One', this song was a little light relief on what is quite a dark and brooding album. But ABBA being ABBA, it's almost like they couldn't help ending the song on those down notes. The masters of melancholy.

    • @Mark-zu6oz
      @Mark-zu6oz 3 роки тому +3

I think this song was more interesting and fit in better with the other songs on the album because I feel there's a darker side to this over-the-top character in the lyrics where it seems she also is probably out of contol with her behavior. The down notes at the end give me the feeling that this is not a happy person. With Two For The Price of One it seemed a bit more of just a joke and the ending of the song seemed a bit too much.

Hey Dereck! It’s so fun to see when you get excited by what you are hearing and processing it as well, picking out certain sounds and vocal arrangements and when you do it to an ABBA it’s even more special since I love them so much. I like your comments regarding Frida’s performance in the video and noting her full commitment to really acting it out. But, as you may or may not know as you’ve experienced a lot of ABBA’s videos, Frida is a true performer and has always said how much she loves the performance aspect of singing and being onstage. It’s part of what I always found so interesting about the contrast with Agnetha and her more low key personality, but, dynamic stage presence. I think you should take a visit back to the Arrival album for what I consider an under appreciated gem of a song (has a video as well) called “That’s Me”. And this suggestion goes a little further back and again I think is a little gem of a song called “Tropical Loveland” and at some point you MUST do a reaction to “Hey Hey Helen” which also has a live video from ABBA’s appearance on the US TV show at the time called Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.

  • @eduardooscar309
    @eduardooscar309 3 роки тому +2

Hello Dereck, and nice to see you again in another reaction to the ABBA songs
    Head over heels
    It's a very good song
    unfairly despised or relegated
The video is one of ABBA's most creative (and the funniest)
Frida is excellent in her performance, while Agnetha accompanies the narration of the story with mischievous winks
The song has the typical contrasts that ABBA exploits so well: a soft opening melody with a sweet solo by Agnetha, then moving on to a powerful chorus with one of the best and most beautiful harmonies by Agnetha and Frida
In my opinion it is one of the best songs on the album "The Visitors"
It was #25 in the UK, a great brand for any band or singer, but it was not what ABBA expected, or what was expected of ABBA
(for me it deserved to be Top 10)
And maybe could be an influence of tango in their melody
I'm from Buenos Aires, tango city
PS: I agree with some comments before me and suggest react to
    "I've been waiting for you"

This was the very first Track from ‘The Visitors’ to grow on me the quickest. I was delighted when it was released as a Single, but absolutely broken-hearted when it fared so badly... I got some consolation though by the fact a lot of people didn’t know that it hit Number ‘2’ in two countries in Europe, and it did in fact get to number one for just one week in a very obscure country that I can’t recall, and so all was not lost. I played it over and over through the month of February 1982 - willing it to climb the Chart! Definitely one of their greatest Singles.

Schön wieder was von ABBA und Dereck gleichermaßen zu hören.
Da warte ich schon immer drauf.Head OVER Haels war ja nun leider ein Stück von ABBA's letzten Album
The Visitors .
    Z.B. My Love My Live,
Suzy Hang Around, Happy Hawaii, Lovelight, Thats Me

It was the second single from The Visitors in the UK but 'only' charted at number 25. Original working title was 'Tango' so maybe thats where you're getting the dance vibe Dereck. It was one of my favourites when I first heard the album BUT it did go to Number 1 in The Netherlands...allegedly. NOW, Please check out Our Last Summer, please please please.

Also Bjorn and Benny drew musical influences from across Europe (and the US) in their songwriting - Germany, Spain, France etc... They have commented on this.

Lol. The bass is semi-staccato with a syncopated rhythm. The song is built on arpeggios and chromaticism and you can hear this especially with the verses.

I like the fairground style, big keyboard strings counter-melody during the choruses. It definitely does, as you mention, have a Spanish feel to it. They truly are a European band! You might really enjoy "I do, I do, I do, I do, I do." Consider it related research, eh?

I want to add that in southamerica, a singer called Angela Carrasco used a little sample of intro of this song (in early 90’). The Angela’s song was “Boca Rosa”. It was a big big succes. Saludos desde Santiago de Chile

Could have been interesting direction for ABBA in '80s, imho. Tango+cabaret elements+inventive melody for which many modern day pop musicians would give one of their arm, for sure. Excellent instrumentational solo in the bridge part almost reminds of 17th century, evoking haunting yet beautiful and extravagant feeling. I think, going synth-pop would have been way too predictable and not fruitful for ABBA (since synth-pop music limits melodic composition, in my opinion, and ABBA was all about melody - in that sense they were true heirs to Beatles). So it wouldn't have mattered if any other song from Visitors had been released instead of that one. Because interest in ABBA has been declining in early 80s anyway - meticulous approach to melody was out of fashion and groove-and riff-based songs and post-punk primitivity were trending throughout whole 80s decade. Obviously, becoming another typical synth-pop band of the '80s made very little sense for ABBA. So their split was only logical.

I feel an almost syncopated uplifting beat, strange key but wonderful multi-tracked harmonies, brightly sprinkled keyboards and bass that not only supports in great playing style but suggests that you must move to this song. All wrapped up in a well handled production and engineered mix to give an experience of musical freshness and drive. Play loud! Thanks for uploading and breakdown thoughts. Enjoyed your views very much - Liked.

The beat to this song is very much styled as a Cha-Cha. The video is one that screams the 80's especially with the variety of dresses worn by Frida. As with a lot of ABBA's songs, it's very up-beat and is indicative, (for me, anyway), of the kind of songs that would have been played at kiddie's birthday parties of the time. It just has that, 'jelly and ice cream', feel to it! 🤣 Not that that's a bad thing.

I just love The Visitors. Yes, it’s not as upbeat and happy, but I just think that the songwriting is masterful. Bjorn has openly said and shown that he hates this video. I personally like it and I think it’s really fun. I don’t think this album was as big as others because it was a lot darker and more emotional than their other releases as was Super Trouper. My 3 personal favorite ABBA albums are The Visitors, Super Trouper and Voulez-Vous.

I'm guessing the pairing of Bjorn and Frida was more due to the couples both being split and not wanting to be with the other at this point. This song is not one of their greatest, but it is interesting for the descending chromatic melody in the verse. I think the best part of the song is actually the end where Agnetha holds the note over the changing chords.
