The genius of ABBA to have such a joyful sound married to dark lyrics. ABBA are the gift that just keeps on giving and giving and giving...... Bloody marvellous
I always said this should have been released as a single. It's about a woman exploring two very different sides of her personality. Very clever lyrics, great melody and as usual superb vocals.THIS was a terrific album & the top selling album of 1980 in The UK.
It is indeed one of many hidden gems. ABBA's albums are full of them. They released many singles but the other tracks on the albums are often equally good and could have been hits as well.
Hi Dereck so many classic album tracks from Abba! One to look out for is 'Should I laugh or cry' fabulous synths again vintage darker Abba! Another fun track is 'You owe me one' from 1982. Great reviews Dereck!!
I absolutely adore this song! I must have listened to it 100 times over the years. I know it's a dark subject matter but this track always makes me feel really happy. As a kid I thought she was singing about someone called Dr Fraud and I always wondered who that was lol x
Super Trouper Album was only released in the UK in November 1980,and was the biggest selling album in the UK that year, with 1 million advanced orders of the album, one of my favourite songs, which for me was their best album.
I can see in the earlier comments that Michael B. Tretow is mentioned. He really deserves such big cred for creating that special ABBA-sound. A True Genius in soundengineer who is one of a kind and a hero of mine!
Abbas is a group consisting of 4 geniuses! Their songs and voices are amazing. But we must not forget Michael.B.Tretow the technician who created Abbas' special unique sound! Think what masterpieces they have created 🙏. Their songs never become outdated but live on for future generations 👍👑💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💕❤️
A gem of pop music! Super Trouper was the first Abba album I bought with my own money when I was just 12. It is their best album by far, followed by Voulez Vous and The Visitors. Me and I is a great song that has endured times very well.
Great, Dereck!! ABBA's Albums are full of hidden gems: As good as new, One man one woman, Our last Summer, Move on, Andante Andante, On and on and on, and don't forget Thank you for the music and Happy New Year..., lots to do, can't wait for your reactions...stay safe!
Same here. They were always in the background. Like neighbours, relatives. When I heard the new stuff it felt like it was like meeting a family member after a loong time.
Never released as a single for some weird reason, but enjoyed lots of success in Australia as it received high rotation airplay as an album track. Brilliant of corse. ❤
I was one that I suggested Me And I and I'm delighted that I was right..... yay..... still going to make a suggestion for Our Last Summer for it's lyrics, rock and syth. Should be right up Dereck's street.
Hi Dereck!!! Glad you like so much this song!!! Is one of my all time favourites ABBA songs... I never understood HOW this wasn't a single!!! This song is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!! And ABBA has a lot of hiddem gems to discover!!! I hope you coud do some day "Hole in Your Soul", "Move On", "I'm a Marionette", all from "ABBA-The Album", another masterpiece from them...
Happy that you liked this song. It's one of my favourites, and the lyrics speak to me a lot. Frida's vocals in the verses are brilliant and really bring the lyrics to life. It was recorded at around the same time as 'Lay All Your Love On Me' in September 1980.
Fabulous song. I remember a lot of people thinking it would be released as a single, but the band decided on 'Lay All Your Love on Me' instead. Frida listened to a lot of Eartha Kitt to help her perfect her 'schizophrenic' singing style in this song!
Dereck your reactions are so natural. Fantastic comments, arm waving and sounds . The Super trouper album needs to be given a wider audience, its all killers no fillers. Which you channel is doing and great for it. Cheers
Just a beautiful record that as stayed with me since the day the album came out, love it...You can see why they were offered 1 Billion Dollars to reform.
By 1980 I think Benny had completely mastered the monster that was the Yamaha GX1 synth. Whilst only used in the later years, it’s an integral part of the ABBA sound.
Super Trouper is their best album. Every one of the ten songs on the original album is perfect. All ten songs could have been single A sides. They played a live version of Me and I on a 1981 TV special hosted by Dick Cavett. Try Our Last Summer and Andante, Andante, Frida shining on both.
Wow , What a powerful , harmonious and very beautiful sound music and voices !!! Brilliant , excellent , magnificent , extraordinary !!! ABBA is of other universe . No exist nothing like to ABBA music in this world definitely . They are so absolute genius in pop music .
The Bassline is very Great and the Vocoder-Part 🥰 ABBA = The Best Popband of the World 💥 The Mixed Voices of the Girls is a Dream.. Thank you Michael B. Tretow in the Studio🤩🤩🤩
Was sure you'll like because of synthesizers. Synths are almost like a fanfare by Benny, tomtom-drum and multilayered A&F vocals, Frida lead and Agnetha dominating in a chorus. Note also key change twice, back to original key at the end.
They are Legend...when it comes to sound and voice...Superb...that is why till today they are the only group that I followed thru the years of my life...Glad that they are finally back...🤩😁😀💛💖💙
Another great reaction, right on the button! The song covers a dark subject matter but sounds so uplifting and you get the further uplift with the unexpected key change.
There is definately some Agnetha contributions in the background with the high parts and the "I don't think I'm different nor in anyway unique" chorus. This sounded great and lush in 1980 and still stands up as a well produced song on probably their best album.
Superb🎶👌 What else can you say about a tune thats been cream being fed into my 2 ears and totally bring my mind to its ultimate peak of pure satisfaction in music that will never ever be beaten. Mark my words 🎶🗻🎧👍❤️❤️Abba is forever Abba is lifes goal. 🙏
I always hoped you would do ABBA in chronological order. They are best doing it that way because of their growth. It makes understanding their later songs better as you see their journey. But regardless their music is forever. They and the Beatles will be heard 200 years from now and honored just the same. How come you cannot say Agnetha's name? You can say An-yetta. Anyway, so Agnetha is your girl! Ha ha. Well I hope you get the chance to listen to Frida sing Saltwater live for a great cause. She was fabulous.
Knew you would love this one! Next suggestions would be the opening and closing tracks from Voulez-Vous. As Good As New and Kisses Of Fire. Your girl Agnetha does lead on both.
Frida is completely smashing it live in a tv-concert as part of terrible Dick Cavett show taped in Stockholm just after she and Benny divorced. So sad, but a great performance!
Thank you Derek, for making me rediscover my childhood, coz my parent listen to ABBA, all the time, My mom was 25, when I was born in 1978, and rediscovering ABBA reminds me, that I remembering the sounds of ABBA, in my soul.. I know the melody but not the lyrics. Being af poet myself, it is amazing to dive into ABBA lyrics, and I getting inspired to write better and in a new way.. THANK YOU!!!
Super sythy Love it My Fav album Abba Track I should know, as i revirw tbis albumin the ABBA UK Fan club magazine THIS IS ABOUT BEING YOURSELF AND YOU DONT ALWAYS STAY THE SAME THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE
Oh what an intetesting song reaction. Lyrically its very weird. I think for me I read it as an expression of how we interact with the world with different personas. I dont see it as a dark mental health issue. More a feeling of "yes, we all feel a bit messy and contradictory, its not just you". Irs a very reassuring song.
That's what I've always thought. We all have different sides to our personalities that at times can be at war with each other, while at other times they're complementary.
"Think about yourself for a minute, then you'll find the answer in it: everyone's a freak". This lyric made a 12 year old me feel like they were not alone. Absolute bloody gold and as someone else said, I never understood why this wasn't a single.
Derek, another great song from this "Super Trouper" album is "Our last summer" with Frida's beautiful voice. I think you would like it. "On and on and on" is another fun track in this album. I would enjoy watching you react to them.
Me too ! .. It's right up there with my very favourite ABBA songs , if not Number 1 .. And there's a great video with it too .. Really hope Dereck checks it out !
I’m a huge fan I pride myself in knowing all (probably no where near all) the ABBA idiosyncrasies harmonies etc and I’m really happy as you’re recreating this for me and noticing different things. Which means I’m learning even more about ABBA. Thanks Derrick. My favourite album is super trouper although my favourite song ever is “that’s me” you really need to hear it. B side of dancing queen. Album track in arrival
I don't think it is about a illness but just somebody who have 2 personalities like the good and the mad... like everybody. Like those angel and devil on each elbows. Sorry for my english...
Greetings, Dereck 👋😃🐨🦘🦜✨ • One of the jobs that ABBA's recording engineer (Micke B. Tretow) often did was to give a song a working title - usually if the lyrics weren't ready and/or if ABBA were playing around with temporary or non-sensical lyrics while experimenting through the song's evolution. And if it was early days into recording without lyrics, Micke would often give it a title (sometimes silly/daft/fun and irrelevant to what the song ended up being), inspired by what the music made him think of, via the arrangement that B&B had come up with initially. And for this song, those two working titles are correct: 'Jackass' and 'Piccolino'. (Some others... 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' had the previous working titles: 'Number One, Number One' and 'Ring It In' // 'The Story Of My Life II/III' for 'The Winner Takes It All' // 'Mr Sex' for 'King Kong Song' // 'The Devil In Miss Jones' for 'The King Has Lost His Crown' or 'If It Wasn't For The Nights' // ...and more 😁 [...the research to confirm the variations of working titles, is from the website 'ABBA Omnibus' - run by long-term Australian ABBA fan, and official cover-notes compiler and sub-editor: Ian Cole 😊].). • The lyrics for 'Me and I' are just a fictional story, as per other ABBA songs. Although sometimes one can wonder if some of their lyrics are inspired by a bit of historical biography, like 'I Wonder (Departure)' being vaguely similar to how Frida might have been wondering before she took the complete dive into her career; and how some of 'The Winner Takes It All' *were* inspired by just *some* of Björn & Agnetha's divorce - but it is *not* biographical; and as they've both mentioned: there was no 'winner' in their divorce (just like in many divorces). • And yes, that was a key-change 🎶😁✨

On and on and on". Mon visage fait toute sorte de grimaces quand je la chante mais j'ai toujours du fun. Ahhhhhhbba. Ma jeunesse, mon adolescence et mon bonheur de tous les jours.
It’s ANGELEYES who made me fall in love with ABBA in 1979. I didn’t know them before that. It was the B-side from their single VoulezVous. Unfortunately ABBA was not as popular as in was in Europe back then.
@@martincharron2399 Sadly Bjorn and Benny didn't like the song that much... That's why it was NEVER played live, although it was really an A-Side together with Voulez-Vous...
With regards to working titles, they are all true. ABBA would call a new tune by one title as it evolved through usually different versions and lyric ideas before settling on the final version.
It's so funny Dereck, and I have to share this with you......is that when you are enjoying theses songs of ABBA, I'm finding myself talking with you over their songs, and agree with all your saying about their lighter songs up to their later darker songs, and sad songs aswell. But yeah you are right on point and target with your interpretations of every single song of their's. Thanks so much again Dereck ☺
Also a track ..called " Lovers live a little longer " which I think would make a _ great world 🌎 aids day anthem ...the lyrics are spot on....give it a listen 🎶👌 respect and thanks for your informative opinions..👍
Treat yourself to the live version from Dick Cavett. Frida's vocals can get buried in the mix on the album version but in the live version they are much more prominent.
The magic of an ABBA song when it sounds like they have given you everything they key change and give you more.
Thats the best definition of abba i ever heard my friend.
The genius of ABBA to have such a joyful sound married to dark lyrics. ABBA are the gift that just keeps on giving and giving and giving...... Bloody marvellous
The lyric is dark, but very danceable. The beat is constant, so it is impossible to keep your leg still
One of tbsir best
I soooo agree
The music of ABBA is timeless!
I always said this should have been released as a single. It's about a woman exploring two very different sides of her personality. Very clever lyrics, great melody and as usual superb vocals.THIS was a terrific album & the top selling album of 1980 in The UK.

You can always recognise Frida's voice as she sings in a slightly lower register than Agnetha. Agnetha is a full soprano and Frida a mezo-soprano
Great, Dereck!! ABBA's Albums are full of hidden gems: As good as new, One man one woman, Our last Summer,

Hi Derrick.. Our last Summer should be your next Abba song.. for the rich vocals of the girls maing Frida and the super arrangements

I agree with Our last summer. It should be next Abba song follow by As good as new.

Always bemused when I hear an American talk about Abba, as Europeans have Abba in their DNA and are so familiar with them, and everything they did.
@Marvin Morawski I'd argue they had an even more consistent career I'm South America then the artists you mentioned.
In My Opinion, Super trouper is ABBA'S Finest album I love every song!. Especially this one.

But yeah you are right on point and target with your interpretations of every single song of their's. Thanks so much again Dereck ☺
Agnetha and Frida = magical voices ❤
Also a track ..called " Lovers live a little longer " which I think would make a _ great world 🌎 aids day anthem ...the lyrics are spot on....give it a listen 🎶👌 respect and thanks for your informative opinions..👍
Frida is a lead vocal!!
Omg Derrick I love your reactions and that you have played so many Abba songs 😍
You gotta watch the live version of me and i too. It's equally awesome. 😉😃
Treat yourself to the live version from Dick Cavett. Frida's vocals can get buried in the mix on the album version but in the live version they are much more prominent.
Agree was going to suggest that show.
Yes Frida takes lead in this song
You broke in on the amazing climax note by Agnetha that ends the instrumental break ☹️
Please react to ABBA PUT ON YOUR WHITE SOMBRERO!! You not gona be disappoited on the girls voicies ther are awsome in this song.
Such an underrated gem with bewitching harmonies!! In my opinion, much better than its successor ‘Cassandra’
@@JF-sh2sm the way Agnetha and Frida merge their voice is exceptionnal, a real gem too.
Parts of 'Put On Your White Sombrero' were used in their 1982 song 'Cassandra'.
