Kathak and Mathematics

Mathematics is woven into the fabric of Kathak. Terms like 'layakari', 'upaj', reflect the emphasis Kathak places on technical calculations and this is enhanced by the prominence of improvisations and spontaneity in its calculative creation process. The relatively open structure of Kathak creates the space to use these calculations to create complex and finely layered compositions. The mathematics in Kathak is integral to the technical skill of a dancer and the dancer works very hard in their training to gain command over this.
