Kathak is commonly regarded as one of the seven state recognised classical dance forms of India, and it is the only classical dance form from North India. It is known for its technical virtuosity, fluidity of movements, footwork, sharp spins and highly versatile range of abhinaya (emotional expression). It largely developed in spaces that were characterized by intimacy between the audience and performer, such as courts, residence of landlords and influential elite men who would frequently host artists. Some artists, especially from Rajasthan also claim a history of performing in temples. What survives in Kathak despite decades on stage is the courtly elegance in its presentation, its confrontational and almost flamboyant directness with the audience, and the highly intimate and interactive nature of its performance.
