Beautiful photography, Steve. You last photo at 7:10 is just stunning! The balance between the large boulder on the right and the trees on the left are a testament to your vision as an outstanding photographer. The colors are rich and yet not overly saturated. Well done!
Thanks Robert, the soft light really helped and had I been in a better position I may have got my favourite shot of the whole day well after the sun had set.

I love shooting at dusk. Nothing in the world is quite like it, especially on camera, the long exposure that is required gives the whole thing such vibrancy. My favourite photos of mine were taken in that beautiful blue hour.
It’s good that photography is a constant learning experience and offers huge amounts of novel experimentation along the way. It is why many find photography a constant joy. Cheers
The sunrise/sunset golden hour gets all the attention but the "blue hour" after sunset can produce some of the most amazing deep rich blue skies and moody scenes, it's hugely underrated as there tends to be a general preference for warm tones in everything.
I think your right about not exploring the light more at end of day Steve. When we had Livestock to sort out, going beyond Sunset was not an option. Now we have no Livestock, its probably down to Idleness not extending the day! Do like the photo at 2.28 😁Great Vlog and wander around the Lakes. Cheers Diz
Wonderful images as always. I have some nice camera bags, and after I got them, I kicked myself for having used bargain gear. The good stuff is more water tight. The good stuff makes your gear more accessible. The good stuff is more comfortable to use. The good stuff lasts a lot longer. When a zipper breaks on a bargain bag, how's that bargain looking now? So I think you made a great choice that you will appreciate more and more over time. "You get what you pay for" is especially true for camera backpacks and tripods.
Totally agree Dann, the cheap stuff keeps letting you down and there’s nothing worse than struggling to shoot when the light demands an immediate response.
When you get those high clouds catching some light its always worth sticking around because reflected light from said clouds can give gorgeous images. It's the same kind of idea as we see with Ben Horne shooting in Zion (albeit in the middle of the day using sandstone as a reflected light source). Those Portra images were stunning! Gotta love Portra... It's the business!!!
Nice shots. Indeed! I tend to stick around for about 45 mins post sunset where colours can be lovely. It was only recently I made this discovery. Previously, I would have packed up just around sunset. Thanks
Beautiful images and nice use of Portra. I suspect you will find the evening light is much like the morning light, only in reverse. I look forward to seeing those images. Cheers!
I actually have difficulty getting myself to photograph during the day with color film. I leave that for black and white. Almost all my color photography has been -30min to +60min around sunrise sunset. Youre inspiring me to try portra during the day 😂
I’m quite similar, for years I didn’t enjoy Dawn and dusk because I only shot B&W. By adding in colour the whole day is more accessible, not to mention enjoyable.
My moto when photographing the landscape was always, Never Give Up, Never Surrender, when I was a lot younger that is. N ow due to nearly 7 years of horrible work in an electronics factory, I am up at 5 am and in bed trying to sleep at 9 pm.. I don't seem to have much time for waiting out, sadly. So I have both given up and surrendered. Was that line also repeated in Galaxy Quest? Very nice photography and story telling, Steve. BTW, I have also treated myself to two Think Tank shoulder bags for my Leica M film and digital cameras, both are used though. Quite pricey stuff brand new.
Work does get in the way of enjoying life and photography sadly, I’ve lost count of the number of days I’ve driven through misty woods on my way to another day in the office sat in front of a screen 🙁
Previously, I've stuck to the idea ..... when the light disappears, so does my camera. In future, I'll try looking for subjects in that later softer half-light. Many thanks for suggesting this Steve. Hope you're enjoying the winter scenes - when you can see more of the landscape beyond the trees. Best wishes from The Rhondda.
The halations on that film are Cinestill to the power 10. It's a nice film otherwise, plus Harman themselves have said they're going to be further developing the idea. Strikes me that this Phoenix is a beta version of greater things to come

I love the light after sunset. Good job really because I'm rarely awake before sunrise!

Totally agree, if it was easy it wouldn’t be as much fun.
Your photography is so brilliant! I thoroughly enjoy these videos… a mini vacation! 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Certainly sage advice for me to consider when trying to tame the light out here in the desert.
Not I problem I’m likely to come across Bob, sadly 🙂

I’m often finding myself edging the sliders towards the blue end of the spectrum, also favour the purples too.
Love these photographs!
Thank you 😊

Thanks Diz. It doesn’t always work out after sunset sadly and on a recent trip I waited a full hour but the magic never happened 🙂
Interesting as always! Thanks! Fine photos and beautiful color! Kind regards from Sweden
Many thanks!

Thanks David. Far too often the light dies suddenly due to a bank of cloud but even then there’s always the chance of some last minute breakthrough.
Beautiful images there Steve.
Thank you 🙂

I prefer it when the route back to the car isn’t hazardous. I’ve just invested in a good head torch to make route finding in the dark a lot easier.
Some beautiful shots.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice shots! Your work has a very appealing subtlety to it.
Thank you very much George.
Interesting video, I shall have to give it a try.
Please do John.
Nice shots Steve, and a great summary. The advice to stay out longer certainly worked on that occasion, and I'm sure it will on future trips.
Thanks for all the great Affinity videos Robin. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2024
Well we certainly stuck it out last weekend Robin.
Beautiful images and nice use of Portra. I suspect you will find the evening light is much like the morning light, only in reverse. I look forward to seeing those images. Cheers!
I still prefer morning light Robert, and when the drama is over you still have the whole day ahead of you.

super imaging!
Cheers Jason.

Thanks Ray, I managed to get some frosty beach shots last week 🙂
Some of those shots I thought where wonderful :). I was wondering what scanning method are you using?
I’ve now moved to a totally digital camera approach for scanning Jennifer, I’ll probably do a video on it at some point, maybe 🙂
@@SteveONions Oh thanks :)
I have to send my Bronica to the repairman because in infinity focus I have soft images. There is something wrong.
They are getting harder to repair now, I rely on spare bodies if I’m honest.
@@SteveONions Oh yes. It's better to find another body.
Is that my favorite AffinityPhoto tutor Robin Whalley who you are shooting with?
It certainly is, we've been doing trips out for many years 🙂
@@SteveONions Two of my favorite channels, yours and his.👍
Hi Steve. Is this the same for when you want to shoot black and white?
I’m not keen on shooting B&W during blue hour Ruud, much prefer it closer to sunrise and sunset.
What Harman did not send you a roll of their new Phoenix 200 ? It seems everyone else who shoots film got a roll.
The halations on that film are Cinestill to the power 10. It's a nice film otherwise, plus Harman themselves have said they're going to be further developing the idea. Strikes me that this Phoenix is a beta version of greater things to come
Yes from what I see it needs to be tweeted.
I’ve got a couple of rolls in now, think I’ll give it a go with a cityscape.
