@Jim Thomas Gareth is on the spectrum. I worked with a science teacher who was similar to Gareth and looked a bit like him. Three schools moved him on because they mostly couldn't work him out. Female students and female staff disliked him, they were very wary of him.

This highlights the difference between British & American humour. If this was an American show, the guy who walks into the tearoom would be extremely animated listening to Gareth’s ‘conditions.’ In this show, his facial expression never changes, and when Gareth’s finished he simply says ‘is there any milk?’ Brilliantly understated.

It’s of course possible to enjoy both for what they are.
But you can’t go away from the UK version. It’s the original form of it and the US show cannot be without it.
I know some Americans who think the US show is the original.
Scenes like this don’t work for a mass-market US audience. They either plainly don’t find it funny or even remotely amusing, don’t understand why they should, or find the rather cringeworthy/socially awkward nature of the series not a form of comedy they are accustomed to, or enjoy.

Picking sides in this is idiotic. Different shows, different styles. No need for narrow mindedness. I felt more awkward and cringy watching the British version, which is also genius obviously, but I find the US version was more enjoyable overall, being less intense at the cringy part. It's really important to get pass the first season of the US version, they changed it a bit (especially Carell's character) and for the better. Both shows have their iconic lines and scenes.

Steve Carrell is too much of an upbeat guy to play a David Brent like character which they sussed after the first series and made a huge difference when they changed it especially as it fitted with the US culture better. David felt trapped with life passing him by where as Michael Scott loves his job. That subtle change in tone across the show worked well and allowed it to go on for so long.

Gareth, awkward, inept, unwordly, a bit of a perv.
      Chris Finch, crass, cocky, vulgar
