This video here…. Couldn’t figure out where the tiny spring and copper retainer went (inside mode button). This video and the quick shifter saved me a few Benjamin’s. Thanks brother.
My 2017 XSR9 switch has just started sticking. Tried WD40 around the switch, to no avail. So searched for more info and this vid came up, so will be dismantling the switch and cleaning like your vid shows. Very helpful vid, thanks.
Hey sir, I just bought an FZ09 2017 and I have seen many of your videos to have a guiandance in how to do some of the mods on this bike and I have learned a lot, I really appreciate for you taking the time to make these videos, keep it up!
Had this problem and fixed it after watching this. I noticed there’s a small sprung ball bearing where the inner switch rubs on the side of the casing. This needs a dab of grease also👍🏻
Thank you for the time and know how on how to fix the FZ starter button. I also have an FZ and A FJR and your video's have saved me lots of money. You have a talent for making these DIY videos and hope you continue.
Thanks! Coming up on 50,000 miles on my '14, and this hasn't become an issue YET. Maybe I'll strip that stuff out next rainy weekend. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks for this. My 2017 just started sticking and I was having to manually push it back after starting. The dealer is replacing is next week under warranty but it’s likely to go again I suspect. At least I now know how to fix myself! 👍🏻
Many thanks, this is going to save me booking my XSR900 into the shop for an unnecessary repair. :) *update* fixed it for me - many thanks again. Safe biking everyone.
Thanks Brian, guess what… WD40!!! Blew my starter solenoid too. Fixed the switch and waiting for a replacement solenoid, then back on the road. Won’t be doing that again 😊 Keep helping us out with the demo’s, lots of appreciation from Wales 🏴
Great video! I was a bit nervous about cleaning mine out until i saw this. To clean it our really well, split the red thumb switch and contact ring by using small terminal screwdriver and gently push in the small square hole on red thumb switch (shown at 07:48). It just pops apart and snaps back together once cleaned out.
Good morning, I just bought an XSR 700 and ran into the same problem. I opened the switch case and to my surprise I couldn't find the spring. Do you have the references or the dimensions of this one please?
That's a good point about JIS. If you're wrenching on new bikes it's not as big a deal because nothing is typically seized up from age and they'll come right out. If you're working on a bike from the 60s or 70s with JIS screws, not using JIS bits is a sure fire way to strip the hell out of all of them. Especially because they used cheaper metal for the screws back then (not as hard).
My starter began sticking on yesterday. Oddly, it wouldn't stop cranking even with switch to off and key removed. I even removed the 50A fuse and the 10A fuse on the solenoid but it still cranked continuously until the battery drained. I have no idea how it was getting power.
Mines just fried the starter solenoid, bike kept on turning over when switch in off position and key removed from ignition. Will be trying this cheers .
Full beams on my mt 09 2020 not working they are turning on and off then just stay off, this happened after leaving it in the rain overnight any tips on how to fix it myself?
Hey there, I have been following your videos since I bought my MT-09 in July 2020, mainly the MT-09 (FZ-09), for ideas on the bike and any tips you give. I used this video today as my starter switch had stuck and burnt out the starter solenoid. I completely stripped the switch down and the switch rocks from off to run on a ball bearing. There are 2 channels for it to sit in when in either of those positions. Mine is still sticking after a good clean so will have another look when the weather gets a little warmer on this side of the pond. Keep well and keep the videos coming.
I tried using those 3M 5ways spray or acf50.. seems to do the work so far for now.. just sprayed it ard the switch gaps without removing.. i had the same issue sometimes.. key on and the engine immediately starts.. must be some itchy finger who tried the switch and it didnt pop back up.. nvrtheless if it happens again will try to do what u did. Keep the videos coming.. ur the best
It's also causing trouble with the MT-07 & MT-07 Tracer. Yamaha denies there's a problem with it. But in fact they should make this a recall issue. My bike went death a week ago, the start/stop got stuck in between & drained the battery.
.... It's many people - having this problem. And yes - very well formulated of you - it's Yamahas' stinginess that causes the problem ! They do have some bikes with NORMAL start switches, but on these nd the 7 series - still insist on this crappy switch ! Really dumb of them. PS - how will a Silicone lube work on this ? - Have you, or anyone else tried ?
Thanks for this video. It was very helpful when I couldn’t work out where the little metal tooth shaped piece had fallen out from. 8:38 into the video - that component is VERY brittle as I found out when mine snapped in two where the spring attaches trying to get it back together. Hoping it will hold with superglue.
I'm wondering of the friction in the start position is by design, or if it's just due to parts not fitting perfectly together. If there's a spring to return the switch to the Run position, it doesn't make sense that they would build in friction between the parts when in the Start position. I think I'd stretch the spring just a hair too before reinstalling it to take up any free slop (if there is some) in the spring when the switch is in the Run position.
What I'm saying is maybe manufacturing QA on those parts isn't super tight, and there might be some bikes that have more interference fit and therefore friction with those parts than others. If every bike had the same friction level at the Start position, then I'd say it was by design. Yours is one sample. Thanks for the video, good info on the issue.
Great video as always! I stumbled upon this video because the killswitch of my MT09 is sticking after the winter break. I was about to nuke it with lube, good thing I watched this first :) Cheers!
Its called phillips #2 thats "fits" the JIS. Phillips go by #1, 2, 3, and 4. 1 being smallest and 4 be largest. Im not sure if they make bigger then that.
TwoWheelObsession ohhhhhh i seeee lol sorry for the ignorance! Everytime i came across a JIS, phillips #2 always fit the best so i never knew they had other sized JIS
Sadly, not everyone has the attention span to pay attention to 11 minutes of video. Maybe a TL;DW summary text highlight at the beginning of the video could help this? Just a thought.
TwoWheelObsession have to say the replacement isn’t showing any signs of sticking anymore so my guess is that they changed them already or it was a bad batch
You owe it to yourself to buy the JIS drivers. Trust me when I say that Phillips doesn't ACTUALLY fit. It might seem like it does however the proper JIS bit removes all chance of a cam out and damaged screw heads. Amazon sells various JIS drivers in the form of full screw drivers or 1/4 hex bits. They aren't expensive at all. The geometry differences between JIS and Phillips is quite considerable and is the reason why many bikes have chowdered up screw heads. Give them a look...you won't be sorry. Regards...and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video. My switch is working again HOWEVER, my mode selector is NOT working. Is there a drawing online of how it should operate?

Great video, very helpful, will strip my XSR900 down now as the switch is sticking with the starter spinning all the time.
Thanks mate! I had Check engine light coming on , till I discovered , it was the sticking starter switch.

Great Vid Man you should send this to Yamaha
Fantastic video, clear, informative, direct with details!! Thank you so much.

I don’t suggest that knowing what the problem is.
It's also causing trouble with the MT-07 & MT-07 Tracer. Yamaha denies there's a problem with it. But in fact they should make this a recall issue. My bike went death a week ago, the start/stop got stuck in between & drained the battery.
Thanks keep those good videos coming👍
which way of turning the bike off is right(or better) according to you? By turning key or the kill switch?
It makes no difference
Yeah mine started doing this a while ago as well.
.... It's many people - having this problem.

Nope, doesn't work that way. There is no where for it to stretch, it's captured. It's all by design.
The friction isn't part of the issue, it's just the grease.

Jis is not a size. 2 will fit some not all.

Awesome. Thanks for this.
Great video, thanks, subbed.
Did you raise the forks in the triple tree?
Yes I dropped the front end 1cm - vid coming on that shortly
This problem could have been the cause of my starter relay switch going bad.
When your starter relay went bad, what symptoms did your bike show? As of now my bike will turn half way over but won't completely start.
same switch on my mt07 2018 and same problem after only 6 months.
Can I use WD-40 Specialist Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray? Will this work?
No! I specifically said don’t spray anything like that
Sadly, not everyone has the attention span to pay attention to 11 minutes of video. Maybe a TL;DW summary text highlight at the beginning of the video could help this? Just a thought.
And then when people can't read, I should.....naw, I'll just keep making vids for the people that can use them.
Great job
Mine was sticking, went back to the shop and they ordered a new one, guy told me there probably will be a recall for these things
Very possibly. If your replacement has too much grease too it’ll do the same thing.
TwoWheelObsession have to say the replacement isn’t showing any signs of sticking anymore so my guess is that they changed them already or it was a bad batch
It will build up. Mine didn’t when new either.
You owe it to yourself to buy the JIS drivers. Trust me when I say that Phillips doesn't ACTUALLY fit. Obviously what I have been doing for years and year works perfectly fine. Notice my screws in the vids (including this one) are perfect. Non issue.
It may very well on old ones. I don’t work on old ones so I don’t have the need.
obviously it works just fine.
