Everybody does not want a big truck for loading extra heavy items at my age because the lower the rear end height the better. It's not hard for older people to climb up in and is not as top heavy and won't rollover as quickly. I like vans not big on trucks.

I loved my Astro van. Had it for eight years! It was perfect for hauling lots of kids in car seats and still have room for groceries. My mom had Chevy full size van when we were growing up. I learned to drive in it. Mom said if you can drive this you can drive anything and she was right!

I raised my five kids with Astros. They will still hold more people than any SUV. It was a people mover and truck at the same time with plenty of space. I would buy an Astro like this over a Suburban. And I own a Suburban.

Your model has terrible visibility!! I’ve owned n 80s Caravan and a 2007 Grand Caravan. I loved them. Daily commute good hauling fantastic. Stow and go was great. What would make me buy one again would be reasonable pricing. The 07 MSRP was $28,000 paid just over $18,000, that was the last year of that model. I would suggest the Ford Maverick marketing model. Inexpensive and functional.

I'd love for the Astro/Safari to be brought back as long as it's rwd based with an AWD option and not priced so high that I could never afford it. I have a AWD 94 Safari as my daily driver and I wouldn't trade it for anything, they're one of the best vehicles ever made.

People loved their AWD Astros! 300K mile drivetrains, and would go through snow unsuitable for many other vehicles. AWD did use more fuel though (3-4 MPG), as the front axle is always engaged to some extent. Might be better now with electronic control that did not exist back when these were designed.

    • @PuffMan.
      @PuffMan. Рік тому +2

@@loboheeler Yep I do love it. Mine has a little over 250,000 miles on the original drivetrain. It's a first gen too so it has the full time viscous AWD system and not the electronically controlled kind.

we currently have a '95 AWD
it was a salvage - only 88k miles on it
van was used by a lock smith
so the two rear bench seats were in new condition
all we did was remove the cabinets the locksmith had installed
replaced the rear doors and rear bumper
and our son-in-law heated and hammered out the rear floorboard so the rear doors would shut
      all told - $600 - runs great
      $400 for the van
$200 - for the doors and bumper we took off a van at a salvage yard
add in some sweat equity - and voila -
      great van for moving people
      or -
remove the two rear benches and use the van to haul stuff

I loved the Astro/Safari van, the company I worked for used them side by side with the comparably equipped, $50 more 1500 ChevyVan. There's the problem. Low sales and a plant problem$, aided the smaller vans demise. My sister still is driving her 95 AWD, Dutch Door, Astro. Still going @ almost 300k miles and four teen drivers.

Being 1 of only 2 minivans that used a body on frame design I loved the astro van cuz it could actuallytow a boat a car or more unlike the unibody minivans made by everyone else.. That and the back "Dutch Doors" were the best because you didn't have a line in your rear view mirror..

My wife and I traded our 1996 Astro AWD in on our 2011 Equinox. Yes, we kept it that long. It had something over 200,000 miles on it and still looked new inside and out. The Equinox is easily the best car we've ever owned... we said the same thing about our Astro Van at the time. An updated Astro with the technology of today would be very, very appealing. I'm not sure I would be willing to trade the Equinox... after all these years, it's still like new too.

  • @johnrichardson1949
    @johnrichardson1949 Рік тому +19

I had Astro's ..... LOVED them... and they did a lot of miles with limited work. The AWD was awesome for winter trips to the country house... nothing beats sliding doors for kids or child seats and ease of entry, and use in parking lots.. It was crazy comfy too. I also LOVE the stow & go on the chryslers ive had.... you're short sighted.... own one and then don't tell me you don't miss it from time to time. Great to have at least one in the family. I would feel handicapped without one. PS - try to get your mother in law to climb into a suburban (been there). Also vans are a must for people with special needs. My AWD Astro could take a bunch of people, their luggage, stuff on the roof, and still trailer like 5,000 lbs, and not be dangerously slow doing it. Even loaded it got better mileage than some of my other vehicles, and it did it all wthout costing 100k like my current suburban. And I sold it for a lot of money to people fighting over it to have it... Also IMHO the styling is no worse than any of the SUV's/Crossovers out there that all look the same, I have always gotten compliments, and whenever there's a trip to take everyone always wants to go in the van. That says something.

Preach brother👏 Its one of the best vehicles ever conceived. Also they were probably one of the most reliable American vehicle ever made. I sold my first at 333k miles still going strong after my fiance left me with the kids and dogs. I bought a silverado being relieved to have my man card back…. Within 6 months i had sold it and bought another awd astrovan. I lifted it, put on big tires, a lightbar, a huge cargo rack, and converted it into a sweet camper setup. I couldnt think of driving anything else. It has great offroad capability and more cargo space than a full sized pickup. People may make “scary dude with a van” jokes… but those are the type of people that just need to shut up and take a ride in my van 🤣

Over the years (and also very recently), I've been consistently amazed at how well Astros have aged. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing any undamaged examples that didn't look fresh and rust-free. Surely it must be the closest thing to a "bullet-proof" vehicle the General has ever made! But whereas I like the notion of a newly imagined Astro, I'll take the prudent "wait and see" approach before getting too hopeful.

  • @GlassmanDan3

Brother had an '87 Safari, I had an '88 Astro. Both got well over 220K miles (I'm approaching 300K now on my 2012 Sierra Denali). Being built on a truck frame with the ability to haul stuff (trailers, boats, etc.) with the vast amount of space inside and three legitimate rows of seats made it the ideal vehicle for me raising kids, carrying lots of kids and their stuff to sporting events, and making several moves by myself. Couldn't have done it with another minivan. Sitting up high where visibility is better than in auto-framed minivans was a definite plus. Never understood why GM stopped making those vehicles. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Priced right, of course. Ideally, with AWD, towing package and hybrid power. The six cyl engine in my '88 was more than sufficient for whatever driving I was doing.

The thing I am always looking for more of in an SUV is cargo volume, cargo height, and the ability to haul long objects like lumber or a fly rod. Both SUVs and pickups provide often surprisingly less all-around utility with these challenges than one might think. A big vehicle like you are describing here would conceivably do better in all respects and not be embarrassing to be seen in.

Yes, I'd gladly buy one if they maintain the functionality of the last Astros. Gotta have at least a half-ton capacity, full 4' wide and 8' long cargo area (at the top of the seats!) with quick removable seats. AWD with the smart transfer case is an absolute must, as is a big V6 or a V8 for towing and hauling duty. Use bigger tires than the old Astro for good ground clearance, but not those low profile worthless things. I want a classy truck that holds everything including the load INSIDE, out of the weather, and still carries six adults in style. GM did it 20 years ago - they should still be able to make it happen.

Absolutely yes. Even though I would do my best not to drive a minivan, I can't deny the cargo capacity. I was riding along with my best friend in his minivan when we saw a snowblower for sale. He ended up buying it and I joked to him about going to go get my GMC Yukon xl to bring the machine home for him. He was like no, he's got it. I lauas he proceeded to fold down his rear seat into the floor. I then helped him lift the machine into the minivan and watched is disbelief as it fit in with no problems. In my Yukon, the handles would be hanging out the rear window. That's why this new concept van would be the perfect all around vehicle.

I LOVE this vehicle. Given the financial stability and the availability of this vehicle, with 4WD, towing package, a V8, luxury interior and a slightly higher roof, I would definitely buy it. Unfortunately, if it were to become available, I would not be able to afford it at this time or in the near future. Hell, I'm barely making my current payments ( $530/ mo )

I loved our Astro Van, it was a van and a truck all in one. I could hall things in it just by removing the rear seats, and it was very reliable. I didn't care about the looks, just that it got the job done, and most SUVs and cars today are all for looks and nothing else.

Growing up my family had a 2000 gmc Safari SL rwd with the v6 n we loved that van, we actually still miss it. Its actually still running today but unfortunately we couldnt afford to fix the rear end so we had to sell her (which we regret). If the Safari got brought back n still have that 2nd gen look with a proper "old school" V6 motor, with the body sitting on a truck frame, with RWD/AWD options that would be incredible n we would definitely get one! If the Safaris n Astros do come back I hope they come back as a family/working van, not a high tech luxury vehicle because thats not the way they were built, n thats not the way they should be built. That's just my opinion.

Bought a Used Blue Astro van it had the extended front end. I bought it as a man was bringing it up to the dealer to trade, he said it ran well and he was the only owner. I lucked out and bought it from him for a hundred bucks over his trade in this was in 1997 so it was about 5 years old or so. It was an awesome van that we passed thru the family for nearly 10 years till we ran out of young drivers. I think I sold it for about half what I originally paid for it?

I fell into a super clean 2006 Express 3500 Passenger a few years ago. And honestly, I would like to know where this vehicle has been all my life. It hauls my motorcycle in the back (seats removed) and tows my travel trailer to the races like a boss. No other new van can do what this van does; towing and hauling. Please GM, do not remove the towing capability of this vehicle. And, I don’t need a high roof but, the roof cannot be any lower than it already is. Thanks for listening.

I had two Astro vans (cargo/work models) Both V6 and they were both late 1980's vans. They were great vans for work! When unloaded the V6 would light up the rear tires. Put 200K+ miles on both of them and we worked the shit out of them. But we had the maintenance done religiously. Only problems we had with the 1980's Astro were the outside door handles. When you have a vehicle you use to get to and from work, you open and close the doors a few times a day. But a work van, 10-20 times a day. We had to replace the driver and sliding door handles on both vans a couple of times over the years. When we were busy and didn't have time to fix them we would climb in through the passenger door. LOL. This new Astro looks more like a Suburban with sliding rear doors. Other than that, yeah it looks good.

Many of us that still drive Chrysler Town & Country minivans can not fit in the drivers seat in the Pacifica.
We need new minivans that have much wider drivers seats with plenty of side to side shoulder width, leg length
and no center floor console between the seats taking up leg and hip room.
