    I also own both cameras and can't really tell, which one I like better. They have different purposes to me. I prefer the A7SIII for traveling, run and gun, extensive gimbal shoots and really low light. In those cases the autofocus, dynamic range, full frame sensor and the compact and lightweight body just come in handy. 120fps is also great. For any planned shoots I still really like the BMPCC6K for it's image, the BRAW format, being able to punch in from 6K, the easy menu and display options. Two really great cameras.

    • @denny_nguyen
      @denny_nguyen 3 роки тому +1

      @@nikosantoss I think the Ursa (G2) has about half a stop more dynamic range than the BMPCC 6K. You also get the benefits of more ports, including SDI, XLR, internal optical NDs, significantly shorter Rolling Shutter times than the BMPCC 6K (about on par with the A7SIII), Genlock (which is important if you're going for virtual production). On the other hand, the form factor and weight can be a concern depending on the use-case. Considering the image alone, it's also questionable if the slightly better dynamic range is worth the money (and it's "only" 4.6K).
      And if you need the additional ports, timecode, internal ND, etc. there are also a bunch of other cameras to consider (C70, C300 III, FX6, FX9).

I have the BMPCC4K and I ordered the A7Siii but tonight bm launched the BMCC6K PRO and I was wondering wether I should cancel my Sony order and get the new BM plus a couple o decente lenses for the same price. I was able to tell in the first 3 scenes due to these factors -> lack of handheld IBIS in bmpcc6k, improved dynamic range of a7siii, cropped image on a7siii, and difference in color. This new sony model maintains the naturally dreamy color science that they have developed over the years, whereas blackmagic has more mild tones without shooting raw. great video!

    I know this is a comparisons and not a "better-than" video, but it highlights what I feel has been a trend for quite some time now. I think we should stop looking at which camera is "better" and really realize that it's actually much easier to find a great camera than a bad one now. The image out of most cameras made in the last, oh, 10 years is pretty great. Using most cameras made in that time span is a pretty good experience too.
    It's reached a point where people really have to nitpick in order to find things about cameras that stand out. "Oh, well this camera has a little more jitter than that camera." or "The skin tone in that camera is SLLLIIIIIGHTLY cooler than the one in this camera."
    Shoot, you could buy an entry level $200-300 camera with a kit lens and when you learn how to use it you're going to get great results.
    What I take away from this video is that both of these particular cameras are fantastic options and the differences are negligible.

      You pretty much nailed it.
      With the right luts and filters, the Sony can look damn near identical as the BlackMagic. They ALREADY almost look super similar to begin with.
      The reality is that most of us wouldn’t even think twice about the difference between a BM or Sony camera if we were watching this on social media or TV lol.

    • @joeeastman
      @joeeastman 2 роки тому

      I concur. It’s pointless to stress over what camera is “better” since most cameras perform quite well over the past couple of years. Learn and master the equipment you already have and you will be far more productive. Ultimately, especially with filmmaking, you’re going to be way more motivated to shoot when you can just go out and, ummmm….shoot, rather than setting yourself back because the subtle tech differences become a roadblock, thus, preventing you from actually producing anything at all. It becomes depressing, less motivating and in the end…..counterproductive. So many people have the “best” camera and nothing to show for it. Compromises will always have to be made. Period. As for me, I’m still shooting with a GH4, though I my end up switching over to BM at some point since I started using Resolve which would just make things easier for me in Post. I’ll also be able to keep using the lenses I already have. This video was great and very informative by the way, although I’m a little late to the party ahaha

    Thanks Matteo! I was feeling really great about my A7siii until exactly this moment :-) On a practical note, and I'm not a colorist..but would it be possible to just reduce or shift the offending tones from A7siii for a better match with the clearly superior Blackmagic? Or have you already done that here?

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  3 роки тому +27

      Hey Brandon! The A7S III I think is the best mirrorless camera Sony ever made, but checking even the log image it seems there’s a lot of green and yellow in the image. Definitely fixable with some basic color grading and easy to match with a Blackmagic camera, but what concerns me the most is the horrible performance in low light up until ISO 10000. I honestly can’t understand why this camera can’t be as clean as the A7S II at ISO 1600/3200. Did you notice horizontal noise at those ISO in low light conditions? I am wondering if they can fix it with a software update! Big fun of your work BTW!

    • @BrandonLiUnscripted
      @BrandonLiUnscripted 3 роки тому +12

      @@matteobertoli Thanks, I have been testing the Buttery LUTs w/a7siii, to mixed success. Slog3 is tricky. I don't see banded noise (fixed pattern) but I do see a lot of chroma noise. I usually only shoot base ISO's - 640 and 12800 - and I overexpose as much as possible until my histogram almost hits 100 IRE. I adjust my variable ND or aperture/shutter for each shot. Images are quite clean once I drop it a couple stops in post. But yeah, shadow noise is a nightmare on a7siii. Worse than a7sii, I think.

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  3 роки тому +6

      Interesting so 12800 ISO is an actual second native ISO? Not just noise reduction? Did you get the updated BUTTERY for the A7s III? We fixed an issue with the green tint. Drop me an email if you didn’t get it: info@butteryluts.com.

    • @BrandonLiUnscripted
      @BrandonLiUnscripted 3 роки тому +3

      @@matteobertoli 12800 is indeed a second clean ISO for slog3, though not officially recognized as "native" by Sony (for whatever reason). 12800 has sharpening and noise reduction in the shadows if you use internal recording. Prores Raw does not have these issues. I have Buttery v2, I assume that's the latest? I still see some magenta or green on some shots, still figuring out why. Slog3 is very inconsistent. I recommend you try Standard pic profile, shadows raised and highlights reduced, just to see the color reproduction. It's quite nice, though a bit over-hyped compared to Blackmagic. I've had a lot of trouble getting my slog3 skin tones to match Standard.

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  3 роки тому +2

      Interesting! Wondering why they don’t advertise it as dual native ISO. For Sony yes, we released the A7S III Natural v2. I think it works way better, but there might still some green in the image. Keep in mind variable ND cause a significant green tint in the image. So that might be the issue. Anyway, feel free to email me if you need anything!

    One thing I notice in a lot of comparisons with the BMPCC6K is that it does a really nice job of desaturating the super bright parts of the image. I think that goes a long way to giving it that "cinematic" or film look. It was clear in this comparison and the one with the XT4 that even though the dynamic range is super similar, the BMPCC6K tends to look like it has a softer "rolloff" and less of a video look because it doesn't get nasty saturated colors in the highlights.

    Cam A = BM (micro jitter). I found it a bit more pleasing tbh (maybe it was just the focal length on the sony was a bit too wide). Honestly though, unless you're doing side by side comparisons like this, the footage coming out of pretty much any interchangeable lens cameras nowadays is easily good enough for narratives. I think the only differentiating factors are convenience and flexibility (e.g. raw etc) The only thing i miss from by BM is braw and not having to worry about setting whitebalance.

    Standing that close with a 35mm lens on a full frame camera like the FX3 will be unflattering for any talent, which I feel definitely helped me like the BMPCC footage more (as it forced you to back away from the talent); I feel like to be fair the distance should have remained the same with different focal lengths to show how you'd accomplish the same framing given the limitations / strengths of each camera, or cropped in to APS-C mode on the FX3. Check Peter Lindgren's last video in "Rivals" , correctly exposed shots at ISO40000, and perfectly clean.

  • @MoonlightSocial

    No doubt the A7s iii and all these other full frame/mirrorless cameras are great cameras that can handle a lot of tasks. But once you record and grade in Blackmagic RAW, you pretty much never want to go back. There is an undeniably filmic quality to BRAW footage. When you use the new HDR grading in DaVinci it feels like a CRIME to have that much control over your image in post. It still ultimately takes a lot of work to make a DSLR image feel more like cinema camera image - obviously doable, but still much more work, and with ultimately less control. Cinema cameras take a little more work out of the box and require more rigging, but the level of control you ultimately get over your image is hard to beat if your primary goal is creating filmic images.
    Blackmagic's silver bullet is and always will be their overall ecosystem.

    I feel like the Buttery LUTs aren't optimised for the new colour of the Sony A7Siii. Do you feel like you could get the same pleasing colours from the Sony if you were as used to it as to the Blackmagic cameras? My other observation is that most of the compositions looked better with the bmpcc6k super35 sensor. I feel like you always composed with the 6k and tried to match it with the Sony with the same lens, by getting closer. This was an advantage for the 6k (also you know how to compose for that camera very well.) This was the main giveaway also, you can see cam B is a bigger sensor, cam B would have looked better with a 50mm lens most of the time, from the same distance as cam A. The Sony being too noisy below 12800 ISO doesn't bother me, I would always choose better sensitivity because I can always make the image darker with ND, but usually I cannot make it brighter without compromise in noise levels. I would basically use the Sony as a dual gain camera, always sticking to 640-1000 ISO or fixed 12800 (with ND if needed).

I initially liked the Sony better for skin tones when inside by those white walls. Once it got outside around all the green leaves and grass, I liked the BMPCC6k better. Sony was too saturated at that point. And then it was back and forth for a while. Impressive showing by both cameras. I would use either confidently, but having the option of B-raw or ProRes internally with BMPCC6K seems like the better option. Also, you could shoot Braw and then do noise reduction with Davinci Studio because they include a license with purchasing the camera. Raw from the A7siii requires an external recorder and then you'd still have to buy something like Neat Video to do noise reduction. The internal processing of noise reduction on the A7siii looks blah at times.
