Agree that they could have made it a box shape. One thing keeping me away from BM is the weird shape. Requires a bit more work to balance on gimbals. But the 2x 1/4" screw at the bottom is great though. Wish all cameras had that.
I own the BMCCP 6K pro and I can work around all the downsides except for the autofocus and the active tracking. Nailing focus each time fast and be able to keep in focus when moving is so important for me as a single operator that I am considering to switch over to the Sony. I own the Sigma 18-35 as well as the Canon 24-105mm. Can someone tell me if with the adaptor the AF will perform as well as do the Sony lenses?
Hi, I stumbled upon reading your comment and I happen to shoot with both BMPCC6K and Sony. MC-11 will work perfectly fine with my two sigmas, one being 18-35 and the other being 24-105. 18-35 is usable at 24mm mark and wider. 24-105 is fine because it is designed for full frame. I have shot music videos only using the18-35 and if you want to see how they work in terms of autofocus, let me know and I will post the link.
Nice comparison. I'm torn between Sony or BMD. Love G Master lenses, Alpha 1 specs, but also love the BMD ecosystem of cameras, ATEM remote camera control, ATEM ISO recording live camera switching to a Resolve project file ready for editing.
Thanks! If you're going to be doing any kind of live switching, there's really no choice. BMD as you has just has everything you need and it all talks to each other! Sony feels like it'll be more trouble than it's worth tbh. But if you're shooting to be edited later, Sony is great!
Haven't used the A1, but currently own the 6k Pro and have to say that shooting with it is a blast. It's so clean and organized. BMD has really honed in the color science and knows what buttons to prioritize on the exterior. In comparison, the Sony A7III feels like a little kids you or a TikTok camera, even though I know it’s capable of capturing compelling footage. 6k RAW plays smoothly in Premiere at 1/4 quality on half-decent computers without proxies (God bless BMD's codec). The one issue I’ve had with it is its size. If you are going to get a gimbal for it, make sure there’s plenty of clearance on all sides for this camera because it is awkwardly large (especially in width). Doesn't feel too awkward in the hand, but I haven't been able to get it to balance properly with the Ronin S gimbal because it barely fits. In addition the weight isn't evenly distributed so trying to balance the tilt axis has been a headache. You can easily buy a better gimbal though with the money you save over the A1. Hope that helps and lemme know what you decide!
I think you are every smart in purchasing both cameras for solo use and use with a production crew. I am mostly a solo shooter who does events and I am toiling between these two cameras. I appreciate your honest opinion and attention to detail good lock on fur productions. Look for ward to more videos.
Great video. I think you missed out on stabilisation though, where the Sony obviously takes the cake. If you go solo with the BM you'll have to get the gimbal with focus motor too. With Sony that's not the case. And, add the gimbal cost to the BM and you're almost at the Sony's price.
These cameras are not in the same leage. I work for a network TV fishing show and would never use BMPCC unless it was for broll. If you are shooting a film the BMPCC is a better choice but for everything else the all other sony cameras beat the BMPCC. (I own both)
@@ekphotography try and pull manual focus on a boat and also managing the audio and everything as a 1 man crew. With a sony a7siii or even a sony a7iii is the superior camera for shooting an outdoor reality TV shows. I might know because I own and use both. I own the 6k rented the Sony and to be honest I like the 6k image better. You are right concerning usability but as a 6k owner and starter I got use to setting and pulling manual. Using the Sony auto focus was a dream but there was a couple times it hunted in the middle of a killer shot.
APSC and Super 35 are actually really close in dimensions, so there is no vignetting. You can use most APSC lenses on super 35mm cameras, even up to the RED's and Alexas that are not full frame
Not gonna lie. I did not realise that until you said it... Probably because I didn't buy them both at the same time. Bought the a7Siii when it came out and the BMPCC wasn't even a thought in my mind... The FX6 is slightly more expensive here in South Africa, but seriously worth considering... 🤔 Thanks so much!
In my opinion there is not much sense to compare the BMPCC to the current mirrorless line up of cameras. The BMPCC in my opinion is best shot fully rigged out with cage, external SSD, v-mount battery and follow focus. If you are really serious you can even throw nice cine lenses on there. Working with that package the missing image stabilisation doesnt matter so much, because the mass of the setup eliminiates micro shakes and you do shoot in a different style anyway. the camera produces beautiful images and BRaw is a joy to use in davinci resolve
Nope, your thought process is sound. The Blackmagic is more for when you have a crew and that's how we use them. Blackmagic raw gives so much leeway in the editing process, especially with Davinchi. The sony on the other hand with its auto focus and other features is great for a one-man band. Every job doesn't require the 6k and it saves you time with the smaller body.
Honestly, only used the BMPCC about 3 times in the last 3 months... Everything about the Sony is much simpler and easier to use on corporates. But whenever a narrative shoot comes along and I have a larger team, the blackmagic just makes a much nicer image. But the sony is definitely my go to for most jobs
@@LoopedPictures I suspected that… we all do that thing where we think we are going to be somehow more connected to the cinema and cinematic ethos if we use the cinema cameras but then realise lugging the heavy gear comes in a way of creating and technology moved up so fast and at the end of the day cameras really don’t matter that much and end up going for what is physically easier 🙃 thanks for your answer brother - happy trails 🙌
Hello. I am watching your reviews and thank you for your work. I would like to advise you on buying 6k video recording equipment. £ 3,000 maximum The camera is to be used to record music videos and reportages. Thank you.
Hi. If you really need a 6k camera, I think the original BMPCC 6k is your only option at that price. It's a marvelous camera, so that would be my recommendation. Perhaps with the signal 18-35 f1.8 if it's still in your budget.
Thanks my guy! I'm looking at purchasing my very first but I was conflicted between the BMPCC (4K) and the Canon C300 MK2. I'm leaning towards BMPCC though 😂
Quite the difference in budget you got there 😂 The blackmagic is gonna be awesome! And you've got a massive variety of lenses that will fit that camera! Good luck 😁
Hello. Can somebody tell me if the footage of both cameras are easy to match with each other in post? I own the BMCCP6K pro but I am considering buying the Sony A7 Iii s as well for the reasons mentioned in this video. But what if on a production I use both?
Since I don't see answers here; I can tell you that I've tried to match and older generation Blackmagic to an older generation Sony and it seemed impossible. I haven't tried these two models in particular.
f1.8 x 1.56 (crop) = 2.808 (in Full Frame 1.0 Crop). So It doesn't make any difference if you have f1.8 on a crop sensor or f2.8 on a full frame sensor. Now 18-35 is about 24-50 on full frame. So I think a 24-70mm is a bit better than. I would have gotton Sigma 24-70 and not Tamron.
@@dennisbucher6200 Not to the Lens itself but to the end result of the picture caused by the crop factor of a lens. So to make the calculation I did makes sense if you thinking about the end result not the technical aspect of the lens. otherwise, yeah.. a f1.8 lens will always stay 1.8 but the look equals regarding the sensor size. So what you said might be nice to knw in theory, but doesn't help if you want to achive a certain look.
Please, in the next video, show more image of the cameras more than you speak, its very important you speak but there is no images and videos of results
I am new at this & I’m actually needing both of these cameras (for still video work/filming dj sets, etc). I’ve paired the Blackmagic 6k Pro with a Tokina 11-16mm. However, I am not sure which lens equivalent would give me the same mm range in the Sony a7iii. I’ve read that 11mm in blackmagic is actually like 17mm in a full frame camera… etc. any insight?
Hi. Those are awesome cameras! We're enjoying ours as well :) So the blackmagic has a super 35mm sensor and the Sony has a full frame 35mm sensor, which is larger. The crop factor is 1.6x so your wide angle lens needs to be multiplied by 1.6 and then you'll know how wide your full frame lens should be. Hope that helps!
Yeah pretty much. The Tamron 17-28 f2.8 is a beautiful lens and is probably exactly what you're looking for :) There's also the Sony 16-35. But the f2.8 & f4 versions are both pretty expensive
@@LoopedPictures I was looking exactly at the Tamron! I’ve heard good things only. And yes, the Sony (and other) lenses are very expensive. But for my needs, I think these choices will more than suffice. Thank you a lot for your replies, insight, and reassurance!
5:53 - The comparison is not unfair... it's your way of assessing where it is unfair. I own the A7sIII and I seriously dont get what you mean that the Sony's ISO 25600 is usable after noise reduction - it absolutely is NOT, not even a bit! Unless your video quality requirement only needs to be up to youtube standards of cos. And I found it silly you wanna compare their autofocus as clearly the BM6k is just basic. U should compare the Sony's AF to a Canon. Seems like you too are over-influenced by the silly hype of the internet claiming the Sony is 100% flawless when it is in fact NOT
The A7Siii is noisier than the blackmagic between iso 3200-10000 before you can use the second native iso again at 12800. So simply ignore facts like this is not a reasonable comparison.
I would sell the sony fx3, and buy cinema lenses for black magic 6k pro, and some accessories. So one camera is really rigged out, and not two cams, 50 50
@@LoopedPictures It doesn't make sense to me how you mess up the color...?? people need to say, they dont know color temp of environment they are shooting in or how to correctly white balance their image.
It's not always possible to know the colour temperature all the time. Especially when shooting events with all sorts of mixed and matched colour lights. If you don't know how to compensate, it's easy to mess up colour balance. Luckily, it doesn't matter with RAW
I definitely believe that having two systems is a waste of money. Having a lot of people around the camera will increase the production costs. Blackmagic looks like the poor cinematographer's camera to me. Those ND-s are a joke. FX6 has up to 128 ND value which is very useful in sunny situations.
You're forgetting about its rental value. And what about low budget music video and short film shoots where most of the crew is giving their time for free? When you can only spend money on a camera and barely anything else, getting a great one at a low cost is very valuable.
@@LoopedPictures don't get me wrong, your review is great. But I'll still wait for BMPCC Pro SWRFGF+ (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro with SDI, Wi-Fi, RF mount, Good Autofocus and others.
Sony has amazing battery life? Did you smoke crack before this? 30 minutes shooting tops, batteries dead, on any Sony mirrorless model. Also, the comment on mounts makes no sense. Neither mount is "more versatile". They both require adapters to put any non-proprietary lenses on. Also, yes, resolution IS everything. Saying it isn't is kind of silly. That's like saying a cinema film can be in 720p and it's fine, which is clearly not the case. Resolution is possibly the biggest quality determinant of all.
@@blossommediastudios Actually, it is. If you were the greatest filmmaker on Earth in 2021, but all of your videos / films are shot in 480p, no one is going to watch your videos. Period. Anyone that says otherwise is just puffing up his own pride and has overconfidence in his "skill" as a photographer. People in this age have already become accustomed to high resolution videos, and they are looking for the next best thing. No one is going to accept sub-par resolution. The argument could be made that resolution and good gear are THE most important thing.
@@drift8021 I can give a film school freshman a res camera and I can give a graduate a 1080p camera I can almost guarantee you the overall work will be more professional from the graduate
@@blossommediastudios And I would love to see any evidence of that. Any competent, artistic person can learn almost all there is about photography in a year or so if they put their mind to it. Film school is just an overrated way to dump loads of cash into a for-profit business that serves the self-inflated egos of people that think they are special because they went to film school. Also, the difference between a RED and a 1080p is not enough to make a difference. Those resolutions are both decent resolutions that the average consumer is used to. Try to make that argument comparing a RED to a 480p phone video from 1999, and you'll get my point. The number one most important thing that will determine if someone watches your video in the first few seconds is the resolution and gear. After that, they might stay long enough for the story. Even then, it doesn't take a "film student" or rocket scientists to create a decent story.

Good overview, thanks
Excellent, thorough and authentic comparison. Really helped me out as am trying to decide between them both. Thank you!
Really appreciate that and glad it could help you!
Best comparison video I’ve seen in a very long while.
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it :)
what about stabilization? btw good video :)
good review! thanks
I think you are every smart in purchasing both cameras for solo use and use with a production crew. I am mostly a solo shooter who does events and I am toiling between these two cameras. I appreciate your honest opinion and attention to detail good lock on fur productions. Look for ward to more videos.
Glad we could help with your decision!!
I can only afford the BM and I'll use this camera to save up for the $3500 Sony plus the expensive lenses you need for it. (Budget perspective)
Great video. I think you missed out on stabilisation though, where the Sony obviously takes the cake. If you go solo with the BM you'll have to get the gimbal with focus motor too. With Sony that's not the case. And, add the gimbal cost to the BM and you're almost at the Sony's price.
Oh that's true. It's another one of those points where you can't even compare them. The BM just doesn't have stabilization 😂 But good point on price
So you would rather take the sony?
but why not take a gimbal to an important shoot anyway
How does the BM compare when it comes to stills? Is it capable of producing great quality images?
Please who is best for video clip shooting by me only ?? A7siii or black magic 6k pro ???🙏🙏
Great video. Greetings from Poland🇵🇱.
These cameras are not in the same leage. I work for a network TV fishing show and would never use BMPCC unless it was for broll. If you are shooting a film the BMPCC is a better choice but for everything else the all other sony cameras beat the BMPCC. (I own both)
I beg to differ.. 6K Braw will make the Sony look like a joke. Although not good maybe for a fishing show.
@@ekphotography try and pull manual focus on a boat and also managing the audio and everything as a 1 man crew. With a sony a7siii or even a sony a7iii is the superior camera for shooting an outdoor reality TV shows. I might know because I own and use both. I think the bmpcc have superior image quality but there are alot of other factors to think about when shooting reality TV/run and gun doc style shooting.
@@ekphotography that difference mainly matters if you accidently film with the wrong white balance. Other than that the Sony can look very good.
@@kvalimad Ofcourse the Sony can look good, actually great, but not “better” than the P6K... no way, no how!
I own the 6k rented the Sony and to be honest I like the 6k image better. You are right concerning usability but as a 6k owner and starter I got use to setting and pulling manual. Using the Sony auto focus was a dream but there was a couple times it hunted in the middle of a killer shot.
How does the ASPC Sigma 18mm-35mm lens behave in the super35 BMPCC6KPRO sensor? does it vignette?
APSC and Super 35 are actually really close in dimensions, so there is no vignetting. You can use most APSC lenses on super 35mm cameras, even up to the RED's and Alexas that are not full frame
I agree with you, although for the price of both you have an Fx6
Not gonna lie. I did not realise that until you said it... Probably because I didn't buy them both at the same time. Bought the a7Siii when it came out and the BMPCC wasn't even a thought in my mind... The FX6 is slightly more expensive here in South Africa, but seriously worth considering... 🤔 Thanks so much!
@@LoopedPictures If you can get one! They have been on backorder for months.
Hmm... Decisions need to be made 😂
What about focus noise ? On these two ?
Thanks from Russia for this video🖤🖤🖤
So glad you liked it! :)
Every job doesn't require the 6k and it saves you time with the smaller body.
dope channel stoked on these comparisons, thank you
Thanks so much! :)
I think you laid out great reasons to keep both cameras. Subscribed and liked.
Thanks so much!! Glad you liked it :)
CLearly they forgot to improve the name of their camera 😂 one heck of a tongue twister 👅 🌪
Right!?!? 😂😂
And it doesn’t even fit in pocket now
@@zerovideography lmao good one 👌
So what you end-up picking up most now? I’m having the same dilemma now 🙈😅
Honestly, only used the BMPCC about 3 times in the last 3 months...
£ 3,000 maximum
The camera is to be used to record music videos and reportages. Thank you.
Hi. If you really need a 6k camera, I think the original BMPCC 6k is your only option at that price. It's a marvelous camera, so that would be my recommendation. Perhaps with the signal 18-35 f1.8 if it's still in your budget.
@@LoopedPictures thx :)
How does the BM compare when it comes to stills? Is it capable of producing great quality images?
Horrible from my experience. I have the 4K.
Can you shoot flat on BMCC6K?
What about the Ibis?????
Thanks my guy! I'm looking at purchasing my very first but I was conflicted between the BMPCC (4K) and the Canon C300 MK2. I'm leaning towards BMPCC though 😂
Quite the difference in budget you got there 😂 The blackmagic is gonna be awesome! And you've got a massive variety of lenses that will fit that camera! Good luck 😁
Hey hectic. Did you grab the bmpcc 4K?
Thanks for this video... ♥️♥️♥️
What about still photography. Wild life, nature, sports?
Stills a7Riv, the others a9.
Great information - THANK YOU !
So glad you liked it!!
You should have talked about image quality. Why are you filming in braw with your pcc6kpro, it's for that amazing color science from bm 😁😁
Great video.
f1.8 x 1.56 (crop) = 2.808 (in Full Frame 1.0 Crop). So It doesn't make any difference if you have f1.8 on a crop sensor or f2.8 on a full frame sensor. Now 18-35 is about 24-50 on full frame. So I think a 24-70mm is a bit better than. I would have gotton Sigma 24-70 and not Tamron.
That's a good point! Definitely agree that 24 is better than the 28. But I bought it at a time when money was an issue 😂 Thanks for the tip :)
Not true, crop factor doesn't apply to aputure. F1.8 will always be F1.8, no matter what sensor you're using.
@@dennisbucher6200 Besides that..did I say anything about aputure?
Please, in the next video, show more image of the cameras more than you speak, its very important you speak but there is no images and videos of results
I am new at this & I’m actually needing both of these cameras (for still video work/filming dj sets, etc). I’ve paired the Blackmagic 6k Pro with a Tokina 11-16mm. However, I am not sure which lens equivalent would give me the same mm range in the Sony a7iii. I’ve read that 11mm in blackmagic is actually like 17mm in a full frame camera… etc. any insight?
Hi. Those are awesome cameras! We're enjoying ours as well :)
So the blackmagic has a super 35mm sensor and the Sony has a full frame 35mm sensor, which is larger. The crop factor is 1.6x so your wide angle lens needs to be multiplied by 1.6 and then you'll know how wide your full frame lens should be. Hope that helps!
@@LoopedPictures alright, so a 17-28mm on the Sony would give me ~ BMPCC’ 11-16 🙂
How does the BM compare when it comes to stills? Is it capable of producing great quality images?
great enlighting review man, also you're sympathetic and frank, fun to watch!!
Great video btw
Thanks so much!
Seems like you too are over-influenced by the silly hype of the internet claiming the Sony is 100% flawless when it is in fact NOT
Amazing Work 👍
Thanks so much!
Amazing video Jacooooooooo
😂 Thanks man
Good Video Sharing Thank.
Thanks so much :)
You're a. great host. Got to love the chilled south African manner
That's so kind! Thanks! :)
I have to have built in ND filters
THANKS PAL!
Forward to 12:11
How Humble
BRaw is great, Sony menus suck. Thank you have a great day.
No you didn't, you rented those cameras xD or your gonna return one of them!
The A7Siii is noisier than the blackmagic between iso 3200-10000 before you can use the second native iso again at 12800. So simply ignore facts like this is not a reasonable comparison.
why is this video so grainy?
I would sell the sony fx3, and buy cinema lenses for black magic 6k pro, and some accessories. So one camera is really rigged out, and not two cams, 50 50
That's a really interesting point of view!
@@LoopedPictures I’m shooting a7s3 and c200 but selling c200 for a 6k pro. I canceled my Komodo order to get a 6k
Got lucky to not get a blue screen
Our screen is pretty blue, not gonna lie. But it's super easy to change the colour temperature in post if it causes you to monitor incorrectly
Luckily, it doesn't matter with RAW
they just fixed it with a firmware update :) Also, you can calibrate the monitor color in the settings

fare comparison
I definitely believe that having two systems is a waste of money. Having a lot of people around the camera will increase the production costs. Blackmagic looks like the poor cinematographer's camera to me. Those ND-s are a joke. FX6 has up to 128 ND value which is very useful in sunny situations.
You're forgetting about its rental value. And what about low budget music video and short film shoots where most of the crew is giving their time for free? When you can only spend money on a camera and barely anything else, getting a great one at a low cost is very valuable.
@@LoopedPictures don't get me wrong, your review is great. But I'll still wait for BMPCC Pro SWRFGF+ (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro with SDI, Wi-Fi, RF mount, Good Autofocus and others.

bla bla bla, show the image shooting with the cameras not your face!
Good tip!
Resolution isn't everything. What a clown ass statement 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
resolution definitely isn’t everything at all
@@blossommediastudios Actually, it is.
Hey sooo sad major advantage of black magic is affordable,nd filters, larger screen , 6k resolution… you just say these stuffs in the conclusion we are wait to the see the exact quality of these to cameras at the optimal level …🥲 i hope you would consider in the future
