I'd urge you to reconsider the lottery. In the past 15 years, the #1 pick has gone to a team outside of the top 12 in value (currently) Only 4 times (not including 2024 draft). Colorado in '14, Florida in '16 and buffalo in '18 and '21. that means a top 12 valued team has selected 1st overall in 11 of the past 15 drafts. If you want to rig something, but don't want it to seem rigged, you sprinkle in little contradictions to hide your efforts. is it just coincidence that generational talent Tavares went to the islanders? coincidence generational Hall went to edmonton? or the apparent generational yakupov (who didnt develop into that) went to edmonton, or generational mcdavid went to edmonton. or generational matthews went to toronto? or generational bedard went to Chicago? it's a lot of coincidences. while your graph just looks at raw numbers, it doesn't tell the full story. over the 4 year period you looked at, 2/3rds of all lottery winners were top 12 in value. and that included three 1st overall winners. to the contrary, the ones not top 12 only had two 3rd overalls and two second overalls. the top 12 in value had only 1 fewer 1st overall wins than the non top 12 had TOTAL wins, and they had ZERO 1st overalls. your graph misleads the argument and doesn't represent the information well.
Maybe look at before Betman and after Betman, as well as team by team breakdowns to see if there's any specific teams getting unusual amounts of good breaks or being picked on an abnormal amount of times. Also, keep in mind if things are being rigged, there's going to be a lot of red flags that just won't show up in the stats, for games, such as non calls, plays where a penalty was committed but not called, or plays where a penalty was called, but none were committed. In the former, it just shows up that no penalty was called on a play, and in the latter, it just shows up as an extra penalty call. Also severity of calls and minutes spent in the penalty box are factors to look at, as a 5 minute major is much more devastating then a 2 minute minor. Likewise 2 penalties called against a team concurrently (ie creating a 5 on 3 situation, is far more devastating then 2 penalties called far apart. As are penalties called not concurrently, but in rapid succession, as these can affect momentum swings, more then penalties called far apart from each other. Then there's goals allowed vs disallowed. Was there a ligitimate reason for a goal that counted to be called back or was it a good goal? Did a good goal get disallowed for sketchy reasons? goals are the biggest momentum swinger in a game, and are what determines who wins and who loses. So having a series like Canucks Vs Hawks in the back to back seasons where the Hawks won by scoring probably about 10% of their goals by knocking Luongo down and tapping the puck in the vacated net while Luongo was rendered unable to play his position. Those 10% extra goals the Hawks got were more then enough to alter who won and lost the series, and that happened 2 years in a row... well actually 3, but Mike Gillis by the 3rd time in a row had had enough and called the NHL out on it and created a scandal, so with all eyes of the world scrutinizing the every call made by the officials, they had to be extra careful to call all games fair for the final 2 games of the series, and what do you know? The Canucks won game 7 and slew the dragon! That's a matter of pubic record. Look up the news from 2011, Round 1, and you'll see after Game 5, the firestorm of news of Mike Gillis calling the NHL refs out. EDIT: And I want to point out, it's not just the Canucks this happens to, and no doubt the Canucks can also sometimes be the beneficiaries of this crap, the above is just one of the most blatant and consistent multi season examples of it. I will also point out that if the refs would just call all games by the rules, regardless of how early or late in the game it is, and regardless of how early or late in the season it is, there'd be a lot less accusations of favoritism, and if any ref were being biased, it would stick out like a sore thumb and such refs could more easily be caught and fired. That makes the question of if a thing should be called a penalty or not much more black and white. Did player a do something that's an infraction to player b according to the NHL rulebook? If the answer is yes, then it's a penalty anytime, anywhere, anyone, then if it's not called, questions need to be asked and answered. If no, then no penalty call should occur. Simple. If you do this if it's this time and this player vs that player on that team it's a penalty but if it's other guy on other team vs this that guy, then no penalty, you get a recipe for corruption, incompetence and bias to run rampant and be undetectable, or just for the appearance of that to be true, and all it takes to make people think the NHL is a bush league is for it just to appear biased, not to actually be biased.
1993 - Gary Bettman becomes comissioner (since then he added teams in Anaheim, San Jose, Tampa, Miami, Nashville, Carolina, Dallas, Vegas, Atlanta, Phoenix) TWO of those teams relocated (Atlanta, and Phoenix) and Miami lost 150 million between 2012-2022 more than any OTHER team in that period...dying southern franchises 1993 - LA Kings make finals (first southern team in finals) they get there after a wayne gretzky high stick on doug gilmour was mystriously NEVER called... 1999 - Dallas wins cup (first southern team to win) they win cup after brett hull scores a goal with his foot in the crease...a CLEAR VIOLATION first southern cup 2004 - Tampa wins cup (second southern team to win) they win cup after martin gelinas goal in game 6 is NOT COUNTED....Calgary won game 6 and mysteriously the goal was missed Probably just coincidence after coincidence that the dying, southern markets Gary Bettman introduced into the NHL were given favourable calls....
@@sampicano Though Dallas and Tampa have always been strong and Florida was mainly failing due to piss poor management which they sorted out and now the franchise is doing much better, and Phoenix had owners who didn't pay their bills, so they lost their arena and had increasing numbers of businesses around the NHL markets refusing to do business with them since they wouldn't get paid even if they did. While Atlanta seems to be always a good choice for a team to fail and move to Canada, and some of these other markets are prone to struggling, I won't conflate bad management with it just being because they're southern teams. The Quebec Nordiques (whish is French for Northerners) and the original Winnipeg Jets both moved due to failing in their respective markets (though admitedly due to lack of facilities and governments hostile to them getting any facilities, even when zoning approval would have cost the city nothing in the case of Winnipeg, as 100% federal funding was on the table from Sheila Copps until Winnipeg city council stalled it out of existence. Success and failure is form many factors, not just north vs south. That said, it is interesting that not one single Canadian franchise has won the Cup since Betman took over in 93.
It was always going to happen, how long did you really think governments were going to allow billions of dollars to be made by criminals when they could so easily control and tax every aspect of sports betting
Pro-sports been that way for a long time. Don't you remember the Pete Rose gambling fiasco or the 1919 Chicago White Socks gambling fiasco en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sox_Scandal? White Socks fiasco was made into the movie 'The Field of Dreams' 1989.
The lottery with the real lottery balls is recorded and audited by an accounting firm and takes place a few hours before the broadcast. You can watch some of the past ones on UA-cam.
Also have to understand that NHL officiating has to be one of the hardest officiating jobs there is. Having to keep up with the players, the danger of being hit, keeping an eye on the puck and the players, being on the ice at all times. So, it can't be easy. Still, there will always be some calls or missed calls that are just terrible.
@machupeepoo8431 Spot on, man. I don't even get upset. I just shrug and say "Sure, that is/is not a penalty right now." Also, that is one of the best usernames I've ever seen lol.
I think the 2 referee system was to reduce accountability. It doesn't make much sense that one ref at 10ft will make no call, and the other will give 5min major from 200ft away. I've seen that in playoff elimination games and it makes no sense.
If corporate interests are involved you mean. Tons of people work jobs where honesty is a critical part of the process. And if you don't believe that, it doesn't mean it isn't true. Maybe you've just lived a sad life full of shitty people.
It is involved. Look at the gambling industry. Also, you have political agendas and with the NHL - they've been desperately trying to push hockey in the southern US for years - to no avail but they're still trying. Hockey interest/profits pale in comparison to the other pro sports - and they're trying to promote hockey in non-traditional hockey markets - combine that with the massive profits/revenues in sports gambling - you're damn right, the NHL is 'rigged'/scripted - whatever you wish to describe it as.
Sorry kooks, you're kooks. The refs are human, and they don't have 360° vision. The lottery is random and quite fair, and top pick is anything but a silver bullet. (Yakupov drafted 1st vs. Connor Hellebuyck 130th.)
Brad Marchand Punching Daniel Sedin in the head 6 times Daniel says "When are you going to call something on this" to Kelly Sutherland And Kelly sutherland says "Oh I will" and then Gives daniel a 10 minute misconduct for daring to ask if Getting punched in the head 6 times should be a penalty.
The canucks notoriously get atrocious reffing against them, that's what happens when the owner of your team is Christian, see now if they had a Jewish owner like the Oilers then maybe the refs would have called that blatant high stick on McDavid lol
I'm sure Daniel Sedin blames that for the team losing in 2011 and not that they couldn't win at the Bruins ice. It's like you folks never consider how no player would say that's the reason they lost, because of a bad call or a few bad calls. Not to say Sutherland isn't a douche bag for doing that, I'll take your word on this I'm not going to go check. But that wouldn't even be unique, we've seen that happen with referees in a lot of leagues. Just be glad he isn't officiating anymore. Vancouver lost because they LOST not because the league wanted the Bruins to win. If you want to say one referee had it out for a team, I can accept that to a degree but it still would never fly as an excuse that any professional player would use as to why they lost. It's not only ridiculous to say things are rigged but it's so god damn disrespectful to these guys and girls who play sports professionally and put everything out there, day in, day out. You think they're sitting up at night with a tinfoil hat saying shit was rigged? Or do you think they look in the mirror, look at why they actually lost.
There’s no doubt in my mind that the NHL is rigged after watching the officiating in these playoffs. They pick and choose to call different penalties at different parts of the game. What was a penalty earlier in the game is somehow not a penalty later in the game. If it isn’t rigged then the NHL should be embarrassed for all the atrocious calls this playoffs.
There's no doubt in my mind that you're wrong, so, fair enough. Is it your first season? I'm guessing it is, you'll get used to how they call penalties in the playoffs. It's always like that.
@@adamg7984 Not my first season, been watching hockey for over 20 years. It sounds like you already accepted the fact that the officiating is terrible, which is fine. The officiating has gotten drastically worse over the years and something has to be done for the integrity of the sport. It’s really sad to watch as a hockey fan.
The NHL has and will continue to take action to do what they think will be more profitable. They will not enforce rules because of this. Example, remember back in 08/09 the NHL said they would suspend players if they instigated a fight in the last five minutes of a game, I think that was the Islanders who inspired the rule, then in the cup final Malkin instigated a fight with a Wing in the remaining minute or two and was not suspended. That's literally the NHL influencing the outcomes of games by selectively enforcing.
Why are refs and NHL representatives not interviewed after games? Why is it that only the players are interviewed? Officials are not interviewed and players are fined if they speak about the officiating.
It would be hilarious to watch, but I agree that it would be too problematic. I would maybe like to see some sort of official accountability for blown and bad calls. Just quietly fine and suspend refs who screw up. It could weed out the worst. But there's probably lots of problems I'm not considering.
Because they sell out seats, merch, concession, and just about everything else with zero playoff success. If you don't need to have on ice success to have off ice success you don't go on deep runs.
The suggestion it is rigged is a valid plausibility simply for the fact that especially in the playoffs the officials seem hellbent on trying to decide games just as much as any of the players on the ice. You can say calls are missed or bad calls are made but some of the interpolations have nothing to support them at all. Like the elbows from Trouba you showed in this video not being suspension worthy or clear GI leading to game deciding goals. With the very loose interpretation of the rules, it allows more help at key times to be given to any one side then it should be. With the fact that everything is more intensified or magnified in the playoffs also grants some credibility to the concept but isn't clear proof on it's own
Trouba didnt deserve a suspension, thats why he wasnt suspended. Anyone who watched, should realize a trouba suspension wouldve HELPED the rangers, he was playing on a broken ankle and was horrendous. Rangers fans were begging for him to be suspended. ANyone catch the brutal missed calls on Zibanejad and Kakko right before OT? How bout the non call when Zib got elbowed in the face trying to get a loose puck, only to have the player that elbowed him turn and score an EN immediately? Was no one around when the NYR got completely DESTROYED in the Crosby lottery? C'mon. the notion the NYR of all franchises have benefitted from rigging is a joke
@@gwell66v2AnimeReviews An idiotic take. Trouba would not have been on the ice if a better performing player would have been available for any game. Do you have a source for the broken ankle? Mika sold that like a member of ABBA. It barely touched him. If anything, he should have gotten a minor for embellishment of unsportsmanlike behaviour. Absolutely ridiculous to claim that should have gone any other way. He faked that like the little bitch he is. No one has benefitted from rigging in the NHL, ever. It's pretty clear why.
Nah, man. You still can win the game even with adversity like that and championship teams always DO overcome that shit. It's not plausible, it's pretty fucking ridiculous honestly. The sheer amount of people who'd have to be in on any sort of rigging would be, frankly, uncontainable. The one scenario that has any credibility is one referee who is bribed behind the scenes. That's still a significant number of people who have to not let a single ounce of evidence slip and the damage it would do to any league would be utterly crushing, especially for a league as niche as the NHL. Not to mention how smaller market teams win just as often as major markets in the NHL, it makes no sense financially for so many things that happen EVERY SINGLE YEAR yet we see those things every single year. The fact the refs don't call things the same in the playoffs has been a well known fact for... pretty much for fucking ever, I can't remember when it wasn't that way. And referees make mistakes, they always will.
@@adamg7984 Hilarious to see someone call the NHL ''niche''. The NHL is a 6.2 billion business - annually. That's one third of the NFL, and more than half of the NBA and MLB. That's not niche.
Rigged against canadian teams because the league knows the fans will always come back and support the team. Canucks Boston series years ago was a joke.
was rigged before that series. Nathan Horton attacked a fan and still played the next game, they were not going to suspend the best player on the team. Tim Thomas was also 'fined' only for wearing illegal equipment, makes it pretty hard to score when you allow that
And the teams that win the cup runs are typically markets that have the most potential growth, typically high end markets that are still lacking their prime annual growth through viewership, merch sales, and attendance... you'll never see teams with low production get big prospects and draft picks... but what you might see is a Stanley Cup win for a new franchise to test the expansion potential. You won't see Canadian teams win the Cup because their markets are already maxed out. They allowed Carolina for instance to have it's own Winter Classic match in Raleigh NC because that region of the country has huge viewership in sports... but the problem is it is mostly about college sports... so what did the NHL do? They gave the Winter Classic a college like atmosphere to see what would happen. I know it is silly, but it is just the reality I think we're starting to only just now understand it. Why is it Florida and Carolina (the two lowest markets) in the NHL, getting so much love lately? It's called potential. People are moving to both places in droves, Florida even more so because they're becoming richer. If Carolina doesn't grow in fanbase and revenue, it will be a failed expansion just like the rest. If Florida doesn't grow after a Stanley Cup win, it too will slowly rot. But also, what was Florida for 20-30 years? Nothing, seriously nothing. The team looked like Buffalo or Arizona and even Carolina imo. Now the NHL knows money is going to Florida, potential is there... time to give them a Cup to test it out. If sales go exceedingly well, they will not only have future consideration to begin moving towards 'superstar' prospects, but they will no longer be viewed as just 'an expansion team'. This is literally all it is about. And Carolina did win a cup as an early team, but because no one in Carolina really cared, they let the place dry up until Aho and the new group came aboard.
Hey go ahead and tell me where the NFL, NHL, NBA, or MLB are “registered” as entertainment, I’ll wait… Also, explain why sports betting exists for all of those sports except for professional wrestling. Since you’re so confident, I figure you’ll have no problem with these softball questions!
@@abikuneebus the NFL is for sure.their is this thing called google and you can easily find it their, Its under the category of sports entertainment so they cant be held liable in court for affecting the outcome of games due to gambling. No, only the WWE. This has been in court. The other four are actual sports, professional sports. It's not ''registered'' as entertainment. Stop embarrassing yourself by making stuff up.
Canadian team wins the cup (1993). Gary Bettman (Born in New York) shows up. Canadian teams get made to look inferior since then. Martin Gelinas (Playing for Calgary) totally didn't score that goal no sirree! Currently, Florida is outplaying my Oilers. Problem is, they have 4 extra players on the ice at all times. They're just wearing different (striped) jerseys. The officiating lately is bad. Bring on the AI robots! Can't be worse than Vince McMahon yelling in Michael Cole's ear all night. Side note: Gary Bettman's net worth is close to 40mill. PPS: Betfair, Bet99, Bet365, Betway.
Oiler's fan here, you cannot tell me that nurse and Beuchard haven't single-handedly destroyed last night. Didn't the oilers even get a power play in like the third period? I do agree that Canadian teams get very, very short end of the stick with respect to officiating, but I don't think it determined last night's game. Also not a huge fan of Skinner, I think Skinner is a good 1B goalie option in a 2 goalie system, but he was not the main reason for the loss last night. Passing to the other team in your own end as a high-paid defenseman is absolutely AHL worthy.
No, that was just the weak Canadian Dollar and taxes screwing it up for Canadian teams. It has nothing at all to do with Bettman, junior. Then why didn't Gelinas and the Flames make any indication that they had scored? You're a comedian, haha! What's Crosby's net worth? Yeah, I thought so.
This is Florida's year. Last year they make the final and come up short this year. They get the job done. Oilers turn to win next year. Storylines sell the game. Betting intensifies the need to make the playoff series last longer.
no mention of how colin campbell's son is asst GM of the panthers? or that they were the most penalized regular season team but the least penalized playoff team? the NHL wants that florida TV market badly, I dont think it's a coincidence that a florida team has been in the cup finals 5 years in a row.

People will do/believe anything to justify their teams not having success. I see it in every major sport even in the AHL and ECHL. I’ve seen people yell that an ECHL team was rigged/staged because their favorite team lost. My in laws are huge Steelers fans. They jump around and cry the league is rigged when they lose and the Steelers are one of the bigger markets. People can’t accept when they lose and can’t take accountability. The Montreal canadiens run to the finals, in the series against Vegas, officiating was so brutal Chris Lee got the interdiction to ref a finals game. There was a clear intention behind who the NHL, or at the very least the officials, wanted to win
100%, despite the fact that Montreal beat Vegas, that was probably the most rigged series I have ever witnessed; I'm still surprised that we managed to beat two teams on the ice. I'll never forget how Vegas wasn't called for anything and the high stick that cut Perry's face and made him a bloody mess wasn't called at all in OT.
@@angryassyrian5627 the best part was when Suzuki got punched, in the face, at like max 2 feet of the official, and the play wasn't blown dead. Not a penalty, like not even blown dead
@@vincentbourdon4372 yup, I still remember it was Brayden McNabb who did it in front of Chris Lee and nothing happened. When Montreal won in OT against Vegas Bettman looked visibly upset and left the building without a word. Also, when Tampa won the cup Bettman literally said nothing about the Habs which was super disrespectful considering that he always says something about the runner up teams in previous years.
The last handful of games for Vegas were interesting to watch during this season. It really looked like the league was not going to let them miss the playoffs and officials were handing out pims to the opponents like ive never seen. If the league review the officiating it would be obvious, but more than likely it was something planned.
You could also cover how they crapped their pants in the early 90's when there was almost an ALL CANADIAN FINAL between Toronto & Montreal and they let Gretzky split Gilmour wide open and then changed the teams around to ensure there will never again be a Stanley Cup final between Toronto and Montreal...it's bad for business in the States.
The league was fixed going back to the 1950's. Rocket Richard was so abused as a hockey player, right in front of the referees and no penalty was called. A couple of times Richard lost it and went after not only the player but the referee as well. The reason the Rocket Richard riot happened was because of what I just described. The president of the NHL was Clarence Campbell who hated Rocket Richard. He hated the fact that the Rocket's fines were being paid by the fans fund they started and used to pay for the fines. The day that Campbell suspended Richard at a full Hearing, the decision was already made before the Hearing took place. Richard's witnesses weren't allowed to be heard. What was significant was that Richard was going for the scoring title that year and he was banned from the playoffs too. He lost the scoring championship and Montreal lost their star player for the playoffs. If Richard had not been banned Montreal would have won 6 Stanley Cups in a row and not 5. The refs were always against the Montreal teams let obvious penalties go by other teams while coming down hard on Montreal players. A recent case in point is recently when Montreal played Vegas in the year Montreal made the Stanley Cup finals Perry was bleeding from the face & no penalty was called as was Gallagher.
There was a book first published in 1969 called Hockey! The Story of the World's Fastest Sport (written by Richard Beddoes, sports columnist in Toronto at the time). In the book, there was a chapter called Troubles of the Game, where there were quotes from refs about how the NHL told them to manipulate games in a way that the league wanted.
A more recent example as well was Habs vs Vegas and Habs vs TBL. Brutal officiating and it makes it more and more obvious the league does not want a Canadian team to win the cup :(
The one that always got me (aside from my oilers always winning the lotto) was the Rangers lotto wins They send out a letter saying “hey fans we love you and we love our team but we gatta rebuild/retool so we are ganna lose some fan favorites and some games but hang in there”. And then magically they get 2 top picks (along with good GMing and coaching) are back to the top in like 3-5 years
Dont forget the unprecedented pick when the Rangers were in the bubble playoffs, lost in the qualifier, yet still won 2nd in the lottery. First team in lotto history to make the playoffs and still win a draft lotto.
The Wings won 17 games a few years ago, the Rangers got the number one draft pick. They were in the playoffs the previous year. The Wings were the worst team in the league and got F’d in the lottery FIVE years in a row. 26 straight years without a top 10 draft pick.
So what? What the hell are you talking about? Detroit drafted #9 as recently as last year. How is that not a top ten draft pick? Are you crazy or just an imbecile?
no accident that every time a generational player is up for the draft a large market team beats the odds to win that draft. Five days before the 2023 draft lottery commentators on the NHL radio were already discussing what it would mean for Chicago if they won the draft. did they discuss any other teams? Like Anaheim or Columbus? No. Was there ANY movement by other teams during the draft? No. The ONLY team to move up was Chicago. Tell me it wasn't rigged.

@MetalDetroit Did you really say the last 26 years? You realize they haven't been a bad team for 26 years right? Hard to get a top 10 pick when you make the playoffs almost every year. Like seriously
What an idiotic comment. McDavid has been an Oiler his entire professional career! Your moronic theory goes straight out of the window. Yes, there was talk of Bedard on several teams prior to the draft. Where were you, Mars? It's not statistically unlikely that there is little or even no movement in the draft lottery. That has happened before. What's your point? It wasn't rigged. You'd have to be as daft as a dolphin to believe that 32 teams are in on some conspiracy and 31 teams give the green light that Chicago wins the Draft Lottery. Then you're claiming that the media all knew about the outcome in advance, yet there is no evidence of any foul play. The only thing that was rigged was your birth, so that you could provide us with comedic value!
If we're talking ingame performances, and you want to know how they rig a fast paced sport then look no further than the NHL All Star game... because in the All-Star Game everyone sandbags to let other players score. I mean, what is stopping someone from performing extraordinarily well, and then maybe being a little slow in a moment to let a guy get the beat on them and the goalie. Sometimes I see goalies drop their gloves unnecessarily low on top shelf velocity shots from the point. It almost looks like they're not trying to make a save, even if it's clear line of sight on the shooter. I saw a few of these in the Canucks vs Edmonton game. Also, I see reputable players who don't make really bad penalities get some of the worst in the playoffs. I saw Jordan Staal wrap his stick across someone's face from behind during the Rangers vs Canes series. It's bazaar, you just don't see this stuff in regular season. You also don't see the 2nd best powerplay go 0 and 14, but that was Carolina.
Rigged to favour bigger American non traditional markets ie vegas, tampa, florida to grow the game.. and toronto and montreal are in on it..toronto being nhl home base and both team already winning a bunch of cups to have solidified fan bases. Its a business that spreads where it can...NHL 'Europe' is next. Canada screwed never winning cup again :( but blame the league for selling us modern fans short
I think another thing people dont talk about is the raw weight of the lottery balls per team. Perhaps a team that has a higher percentage will have more balls, but if a ball is weighted less, then it will have an easier time going to the top of the lottery machine. Could it be that maybe the more equitable a team is, the less a ball is weighed?
You're mixing up rigged with karma. Glad someone got to give Brad "cheap shot" Marchand a taste of his own medicine, sucks to fucking suck for Marchand but he had it coming and I don't root for anyone to get hurt but I wish Marchand had picked up a more severe injury
As a casual leafs fan that got into it more this year since my daughter did… The reffing of this cup finals series has been awful. Game two was specially bad
As an Oilers fan, Im shocked that McDavid wasn't called for high sticking... Im even more shocked that Duchene got high sticked and they reviewed it. As of right now though, Im pissed at the league. They want to take headshots out of the game but yet Sam Bennett hits Marchand up high and results in Marchand missing time. Bennett does a very similar job to McDavid in game 1, and headshots Broberg. And the stuff Trouba was getting away with... my god. I watched as many of the games as I could but I think this year has been the worst for officiating and that includes player safety.
@@MaxSoininen oh no I will. Drai let his emotions get to him and I have no words for what Carrick did, your stick should never go between someones legs. I believe Florida purposefully threw the 4th game to keep the Stanley Cup finals going longer because there is big big big bucks for every game played. There is a huge financial loss to end the finals early on a 4-0. It doesn’t make sense that Bobrovsky was a human wall the first 3 games and suddenly allows 5 goals in the first period only to be replaced by a less competent backup
Except every person on the team gave up the chance to sweep their opponent in the finals, win awards, set records and be the talk of the hockey world for years to come. But they all agreed to give that up as competitive athletes, for a bit more cash for Gary Bettman.... Yeah, ok.
@@CrazyShepard No. None of the players would be aware. Only Bobrovsky. It only takes corrupting one key player to change the course of a game. Billions of dollars at stake, so the motive is there. Same thing in the NBA and NFL. I watched a video of an Italian mafia guy who explained how its done in sports. Very few people in the sport are in the loop about it. Watch game 7. You will see how Bobrovsky suddenly plays again like the first 3 games
Columbus has been in 19 lotteries. Never won 1st overall. 2nd once. 3rd only 3 times. They had the 3 way tied best odds for Crosby, and fell to 6th. They’ve dropped 7 times, moved up only once. While there has been a history of bad management, they haven’t had much to even work with.
like basketball, where cndn teams were banned from getting top draft picks, first year of canucks they lose Gilbert Perrault, next year they lose every game but the last, and lose Marcel Dione, lose Mike Bossy, lose Jaramir Jagr, lose Mike Modano, lose Joe Sakik, lose Peter Forsberg, lose Brian Propp, lose Bobby Schmautz, lose Cam Neely,
flyers are now at 49 years with no cup...lost in finals 76 80 85 87 97 2010.......i don't blame the refs for that.... even though the offsides in game 6 of 80 was atrocious.....its just the way it is............flyers will never win another cup
Trends may show it isn’t rigged all of the time, but it doesn’t prove it isn’t rigged SOME of the time... like in the case of a generational talent entering the draft.

Love the attempt at the analysis here. In terms of revenue generated, we have to consider a few things: 1) all the ways teams generate revenue; 2) market size and available market dollars; 3) cities' familiarity with hockey; 4) sports visibility in the public, among other factors. With consideration of even just a couple of these items, it's possible to explain the revenue differences. I'd also like to know how the lottery works exactly! Is this information published? Statistically speaking, if it's at random, it's possible like the 649 lottery, that a team never wins. It's also possible that a team wins regularly. I'd love to hear about all of this in depth from the league, from each time, etc.
In the revenue sample I recorded here. It took into account. Ticket sales, arena merchandise and concession. Technically Toronto is the biggest franchise, but I would consider the Rangers as the team with the biggest market potential because of income levels and population. In terms of the draft lottery, every team is assigned a set amount of ping pong balls depending on their final standings. The odds of the 15th team winning the lottery is far FAR greater than 649 odds. In fact, it’s not even comparable
Well when Connor is on a breakaway and gets slashed 4 times but doesn’t get a call, never mind the penalty shot he should… I could list another 20 instances but you’re a smart guy and can find all the video too. What are the refs supposed to do with a call they have no way to show judgement on? We’ll just ignore it…yup, we don’t see it. And you can’t video review it. And no one will say anything after the game.
You make some excellent points. The lottery could be rigged but I don't think so. The ref situation is definitely an issue. My issue is all the gambling that is out in the public now. Some calls absolutely favor certain teams. We have all seen it. I'm not talking about missed calls. I'm talking about goalie interference and no goal calls. Toronto decision makes me wonder sometimes. Also 5 min major not being call correctly at all. What is a kicking motion. So much that can be defined as unusual. But over all hockey is a game of bounces and inches.
id even say that the terrible start of the sharks season last october was because they learned they were finishing last and at some point someone said ''yeah youre finishing last but gotta make it less obvious boys'' then they began playing
@@romanfrederick2240 Because the NHL ignores what players like Bennett do. If they policed the players with some effort to follow the rule book Draisatle would be suspended but because they let players like Bennett get any with more than almost any other player Draisatle won't be suspended.
would have loved to see a compilation of all the goalie interference calls for Boston. Every time it goes to review the Bruins were on the short end of the call that defied the textbook rule.
Even if they want to grow the game in Florida, their market will never be bigger than the rangers or leafs. Even if the panthers make the finals 10 years in a row, they will still struggle to fill seats in the regular season
If there is no merit to the idea that sporting events are rigged, then why did all major sports change the legal definition on their tickets from "sporting event" to "entertainment event"? If you know the law, they had to do this so the leagues couldn't be charged with a crime for rigging games. While it is not as easy to see in Hockey, it is blatently obvious in the NFL if you slow down any of the important plays. But as Rome burned, the citizens were provided with plenty of bread and circus.
I am a Rangers fan but not a Trouba fan. He was not suspended because no injury and as many professional players pointed out... it is borderline but not definitely a elbow penalty. Bettman is a NJD fan. He actually HATES the Rangers and Jim Dolan the owner. Finally, Referees..Umpires... and the like are the worst in all sports we have seen in a long time. There needs to be testing, accountability, and better training for them.
Was that one play of Jacob Trouba leaving his feet and elbowing a Hurricanes player in game 1 of the semi finals a clean play? Was Trouba sticking his elbow out in game 4 in Florida at one of the Panthers players a clean play? No and no. His hitting has the objective of causing injury because he feels like delivering extra pain to his opponents so that's one less player he has to deal with.
Why the fuck would the league rig a game for the Florida Panthers of all teams against the Oilers who are essentially the equivalent to the Bulls in the NHL.
Grow the game in south Florida. The Miami area is a huge market and bettman’s big thing as commissioner is to grow hockey in non traditional hockey markets like Florida and Arizona
@@brendankelly9037If Bettman rigs it for non traditional southern markets why did the Coyotes never win a draft lottery or experience any consistent on ice success?
@@brendankelly9037 the Yotes, Sharks, Blues, and Blue Jackets are all small American teams that never experienced sustained success or franchise players in the draft. None of it is fixed.
To show they are honest and transparent with the annual NHL entry Draft, all they really need to do is just to show the draft lottery live on TV/open webcast with the classic bouncing balls the same way the real lottery does it! Still with the regulation having the bottom 3 teams as the first picks. The TV lottery with the real lottery balls is recorded and audited by an representative law firm and takes place a few hours before the broadcast. Have this instead !!! I still feel it was wrong of having the 1st pick to go to Chicago last year, they did not deserve it. Anaheim was dead last and have NEVER-EVER gotten a 1st overall pick....
Perhaps, they're waiting for the next American superstar draft eligible player to arrive? Much easier to promote. Who knows why they haven't had a top pick but surely, they will soon enough.
@@WarioSaysSo What are you talking about? How exactly was it ''wrong''? It doesn't matter who is last. You clearly don't know anything about the history of the game as you're making such ignorant suggestions.
The talks of Conner Bedard going to Chicago in my opinion contradict with the other narrative, if the NHL is rigging the game for smaller markets to grow the sport in those markets then wouldn’t having a generational talent going to that market make more sense? If Conner Bedard goes to Arizona for instance, there’s a good chance that they’re playing games in that state in September, we saw it with Sidney Crosby and Ovi, both those players helped grow their markets, sure Pittsburgh had Lemeuix but they were also on the verge of bankruptcy before and now they’re in the top 10 richest markets in the league
My problem is how the nhl is benefitting off promoting sports betting (I mean.. bettman?? Cmon, that’s just hiding in plain sight)… and you can’t tell me some of the refs aren’t making calls every so often cause it might benefit them or someone they know… they’ve “caught” them doing it before… there’s no way they aren’t just getting better at hiding it now.
Panthers players have been crying if a pinky finger grazes them what are you watching, 3 different panther players flopped in 1 game alone this series 😂
Comparing the Bunting elbow to bad hits drives me nuts. Cernak didn't have the puck, didn't recently have the puck, and wasn't near the puck. Any hit on him would be illegal. A dirty hit was straight goonery. Stop debating whether there was more or less elbow, they're not comparable.
Really??? THAT is what did it for you? Not the absurd amount of shit the Panthers have gotten away with? Not the Bennett sucker punch, or Lomberg's Elbows, or the constant flopping getting them calls? It's plain and clear the NHL is trying to grow the Florida market, and are handing the Panthers the cup to do that
@@PoorMansInvesting "fact is crazy". The league isn't rigged, Oilers were clearly undeserving of the finals anyways. Dallas, Vancouver, Colorado, are all better teams. If it was rigged then there would be big market finals like Rangers and Kings, Leafs and Kings, Boston, Chicago and Vegas, etc. You're seriously salty if you think that it's rigged. The draft lotteries are also audited and unlike other sports there are little amounts of game fixing scandals.
@@vedantbhalla2571 all good, I could care less about the Oilers but OMG the whining I've seen online and then seeing other fans react to them has manifested a hatred that I did not see coming. I'm a Flyers fan too, were it's logical that I hate the Devil's, not the Oilers.
I've followed the NHL since the early 60s when I was a small child and I started to question things in the 80s. As great as Gretzky was, somehow he never took a hit. Once a player for the Leafs, in his first game, tagged Wayne and Gretzky crumbled into a heap. The player was given a boarding penalty and after never got on the ice again...EVER! I figured after the league had lost Bobby Orr due to injuries that when Gretzky came along there was a rule, the Gretzky Rule. After all, the league was bleeding money and Gretzky was the saviour. Every where he played the games would sell out. Then it got really weird when Bettman took over running the league in the 90s. Each year there were more and more rule changes and soon hitting became less and less. By 2010, I had seen enough and stopped following the league entirely, catching the odd game. I did notice Stanley Cup Finals starting going 6 or 7 games each year. Also, a Canadian based team would almost always lose to an American based team. What are the chances of that? What were the chances of Vegas winning a Cup in their 5th year? Most people laugh at me when I tell them sports are rigged and that's fine. But remember, you don't have to include the players in on it, just the officials.
The league was caught with its pants down when the NHL's Senior VP at the time, Colin Campbell, had his emails leaked in 2010. He directly pressured the director of officiating, Stephen Walkolm, to assess the work of the refs in calling a penalty against his son, Gregory Campbell. Instead of the NHL relieving him of his duties, Colin stayed on as the Senior VP. So instead of maintaining an arm's length to incidents involving his son, Colin thought it was a great idea to flaunt his position over game officials. It makes you wonder just how much of this garbage goes on behind closed doors, especially now that gambling's being added to the mix. I'm surprised this incident wasn't part of the video.
It's on the broadcast for each game of the playoffs in the finals, no matter which ice you play on, it depends on who the broadcast chooses to talk about, whom the broadcast favors
When it comes to reffing it is very easy to miss a call, I realize this more than ever now that I have started reffing, I’m a player who started coaching in youth hockey and now ref mens league and let me tell you the speed of this game makes it nearly impossible to see everything and I now apologize to every ref for some of the things I may have said 😮
I mean If it was legit rigged would they really have given the best player since Gretzky to a relatively small market like Edmonton? After already giving them 3 first overalls? imagine mcdavid in a huge market or even a smaller southern market they could use him to market too. An already dedicated small market like Edmonton makes no sense from a marketing point of view
Kinda think it showed the league's arrogance to do it in our faces. They need Chicago to be successful. The Coyotes lost their 1st round and another pick for less.
There are a lot. Most recently would be Draisitl's flying elbow to Barkov. They had to discuss whether they would even call a 2 minute penalty on what would have a game misconduct for any player playing in the sunbelt.
Pittsburgh went bankrupt in the lock out year and every rule devised by the league to implement the draft seemed designed to boost the Penguins to the top of the odds and well surprise! Pittsburgh lands Crosby.
They were having problems before Crosby. They were on the verge of leaving and then the Penguins threw games to finish dead last and were able to get Mario Lemieux. Back then, there was no lottery draft.
@@danp2306 yeah, the way I hear it New Jersey was the worst team but played to win right until the end out of respect for the game. Pitt, Chicago and now San Jose have no honor.
Regardless of whether you believe the Penguins were "handed success," they already had Marc Andre Fleury and Evgeni Malkin prior to Sidney Crosby. Future potential success for the Penguins was largely a given even excluding Crosby. The 16 straight years in the row of the playoffs and 3 championships (nearly 4 btw) are hardly due to just Crosby, but rather the players surrounding Crosby and with good coaching as well.
the 2024 draft lottery was worse than the 2023 lottery. Bettman pulled the sharks 3 times in a row before pulling the blackhawks for pick 2 while only having a 22% chance each pick after 1. which is incredibly unlikely when you consider all 3 picks %'s.
Honestly Oilers were counted out back in the regular season and bounced back. They are used to this. Oilers have Panthers right where they want them. Edmonton in 7

1993 - Gary Bettman becomes comissioner (since then he added teams in Anaheim, San Jose, Tampa, Miami, Nashville, Carolina, Dallas, Vegas, Atlanta, Phoenix)
TWO of those teams relocated (Atlanta, and Phoenix) and Miami lost 150 million between 2012-2022 more than any OTHER team in that period...dying southern franchises
1993 - LA Kings make finals (first southern team in finals) they get there after a wayne gretzky high stick on doug gilmour was mystriously NEVER called...
1999 - Dallas wins cup (first southern team to win) they win cup after brett hull scores a goal with his foot in the crease...a CLEAR VIOLATION first southern cup
2004 - Tampa wins cup (second southern team to win) they win cup after martin gelinas goal in game 6 is NOT COUNTED....Calgary won game 6 and mysteriously the goal was missed
Probably just coincidence after coincidence that the dying, southern markets Gary Bettman introduced into the NHL were given favourable calls....

It is a business. The so called lottery is a business decision.
It's 2024. If you've watched the NHL for even 1 season, shockingly bad officiating is no longer a surprise to you.
My grandfather has been watching the Bruins since the 50s and yeah, he still can’t believe the officiating!
Terrible reffing has been blowing my mind the last few years. Been watching since I was a like kid in the early 90s.
I think the 2 referee system was to reduce accountability. It doesn't make much sense that one ref at 10ft will make no call, and the other will give 5min major from 200ft away. I've seen that in playoff elimination games and it makes no sense.

Brad Marchand Punching Daniel Sedin in the head 6 times
Daniel says "When are you going to call something on this" to Kelly Sutherland
And Kelly sutherland says "Oh I will" and then Gives daniel a 10 minute misconduct for daring to ask if Getting punched in the head 6 times should be a penalty.
The Hockey Guy has a good video on that where he basically says, it will create only more drama and anger.
Plus the refs’ salaries aren’t even close to the average player’s
No refs, no league
It would be hilarious to watch, but I agree that it would be too problematic. I would maybe like to see some sort of official accountability for blown and bad calls. Just quietly fine and suspend refs who screw up. It could weed out the worst. But there's probably lots of problems I'm not considering.
How did I not think of that. So true. Its actually very unfair
If the NHL is rigged why does the Leafs, the biggest market team keep loosing in the first round?
Why break a winning formula? If they are the richest team in the league, why change anything? They sell hope and jerseys.
Because they sell out seats, merch, concession, and just about everything else with zero playoff success. If you don't need to have on ice success to have off ice success you don't go on deep runs.
Because people keep buying tickets? Still watching them on TV.. Numbers never decrease for the Leafs.

These mental gymnastics are crazy 😂
True, Hockey is all Canadians have
I used to think so, but how did Edm win 5 1st rounds. Last one was McJ. After Edm won it, after messing up previous 4.
was rigged before that series.

Didn't the oilers even get a power play in like the third period? I do agree that Canadian teams get very, very short end of the stick with respect to officiating, but I don't think it determined last night's game.

The last handful of games for Vegas were interesting to watch during this season. It's nox fixed..just massaged as needed.
You’re right
A more recent example as well was Habs vs Vegas and Habs vs TBL. Brutal officiating and it makes it more and more obvious the league does not want a Canadian team to win the cup :(

@@danp2306 31 years and not happend, yeah they mabey get one a year when the tallent pool is not so lucrative like 2000 Entry Draft year....

Crosby going to the Pens was a favor to Lemieux for saving that franchise
Anyone who follows the NHL know Crosby was going to Pittsburg
@@MetalDetroit it's true but they "won" the first lottery behind closed doors after a lockout season where there was no true worst teams

My problem is how the nhl is benefitting off promoting sports betting (I mean.. bettman?? @@PoorMansInvesting bro don’t act like it isn’t true, barkov and tkachuk are two of the biggest floppers in the whole playoffs
Leon #29 not getting suspended for game 3 sure confirmed it for me.

Had to put On the tin foil hat for this one
Cry harder
think about it the NHL was purchased and then after that no Canadian team has won the cup
In an interesting counterpoint to the draft section, only 3 of the players on the Panthers teams where drafted by the Panthers.
Could the Leafs bring I more $$$ for the cap than NYR? Or, no?
Lottery I think was to get people forgetting about the sexual assault cases with CHI.
Kinda think it showed the league's arrogance to do it in our faces. They need Chicago to be successful. The Coyotes lost their 1st round and another pick for less.
There are a lot. Most recently would be Draisitl's flying elbow to Barkov. They had to discuss whether they would even call a 2 minute penalty on what would have a game misconduct for any player playing in the sunbelt.
idk a canadian not winning a stanley cup in 30 years since garys been in the league sounds fishy
I feel like referees as a whole need to be seriously investigated. This year was one of the WORST officiating in NHL history.
the 2024 draft lottery was worse than the 2023 lottery.
