13:35 in my opinion, Gallagher's contract isn't bad because it's like a payback. While the habs weren't rebuilding, Gallagher took paycuts and did many sacrifices for the team. Now that they had money ( they didn't have big contracts cuz they had many young players), they could pay him back for what he did in the past.
It is objectively a bad contract because he is a 4th liner making high-end 2nd/low-end 1st liner money. Paying someone for past achievements instead of present and future capabilities when the salary structure is capped is a terrible business decision. This is a competitive business and giving out contracts on emotions is incredibly stupid. That being said, his contract isn't actually hurting us cuz we are rebuilding anyways.
@@theclaffy1842 It's not "objectively bad" when folks can offer a different and defensible perspective. We're going to start forgetting what objectivity even _is_ if we keep carelessly abusing the intrinsic meaning of it. Just a pet peeve of mine...back to the topic at hand. Honoring loyalty and hard work might not be a fantastic 'in the moment' business decision, but observing how teams humanize their contracts is something that players do and reconsider before they sign the dotted line. If Montreal wants to attract and keep top talent for years, then those players need to be able to look beside them and see the players that have already done their tour of front-line duty being treated with respect and dignity and NOT getting cast aside like yesterday's garbage. It matters. At the risk of patronizing you, I wonder if you remember some pretty lean years a few years back when Gallagher was the heart and soul of this team and fought for every scrap of production he got. Around him, players magically got better. Lead the team in goals for two years and was not a league all-star only because Carey Price. Anyway...is it a good contract? No. Is Gallagher everybody's favorite player these days? Probably not. But I think there is a pretty solid explanation why the Habs keep him and honor his back-loaded contract despite the fact that he has (objectively!) lost a step.
@@bradmorris5797 There was nothing patronizing or disrespectful in your response and you put some time and effort into it so I will do the same with my rebuttal. I say the contract is objectively bad because a contract in the NHL is, by definition, given for the players FUTURE X amount of years. Whether or not he was overpaid or underpaid on his last contract is irrelevant. Both parties agreed at the time that the first contract was acceptable, signed it, and that's that. The manager's job in the salary negotiation the the next contract is to project the player's value in the future DISPASSIONATELY. The fact that Bergevin was choked up in the press conference announcing the new contract and talked about his past contributions to the team and what a good soldier he was etc. as justification for the contract is all the evidence needed to see that a lot of it was based on emotions and past behaviour, and not on projecting Gallagher's (extremely obvious and predictable) upcoming decline which had already begun by that point. Your argument in the first paragraph about treating players with respect etc. shouldn't be done by overpaying them. It can and should be done in other ways that are not a detriment to the team in a salary cap league. It wouldn't have been disrespectful to offer Gallagher a contract that reflected his projected future value as that is the what all contract to all players should do. Everything you said in your second paragraph is indeed a solid explanation for why the contract was given, but the explanation only references things that happened in the past, when he was on a different contract. I agree with your explanation for why Bergevin gave him that contract, but it doesn't justify it whatsoever. Bergevin let his emotions control him rather than the cold hard facts, which a business manager should never do. If Gallagher insisted on a salary that was too rich for his projected future role on the team, then Bergevin should've simply let him walk and let another team pay him too much and be saddled with that for years. It wouldn't have been disrespect, it would've been a savvy business decision. You said that people can offer a "different and defensible perspective" on whether the contract is good or bad. You are correct that people can offer a different viewpoint and can give a reasonable explanation for why the contract was given, but, as I attempted to prove in this response, that position is, in fact, indefensible. In summary, Gallagher is being paid 1st line money for 3rd/4th line production; if the Canadiens (and even probably die-hard Gallagher loving fans) had the opportunity to cancel his contract right now without penalty they would 100% do it. You even said "Is it a good contract ? No." Hence, the contract is objectively bad. Anything else is just noise.
Because Montreals Canadian is the mecca of the NHL. The LA Lakers of NHL. We are just a very consistent team throughout the years that we never had a chance for a 1st pick. Thats why. But the fact we never had those we still managed to stay consistent
The hardware and numbers Carey Price was able to put up while going his entire career without a single PPG player on his team is just insane. Another reason why I think prime Carey Price is THE no.1 most skilled to ever put on set of pads. Wish he got his cup in 2021
Ken Dryden is the best ever, single handedly won the Stanley Cup in 1971 most incredible goal-tending ever. Won the Conn Smthe and the next year won the Calder, that will never happen again.

Demidov's growth sprut is out of control. He was 5ft10 162lbs in the last Nhl central scouting report before the draft. He then measured at 5ft11 3/4 and 175lbs at his private pre-draft event. On draft day he was 6ft 185lbs. He is now 6ft2 nearly 200lbs according to this video...

But I think we're ready now, give us scoring, gives us the plays and the homerunners...we will live with the turn overs for a few years even if it means a few crushing defeat and hopefully eventual success.
You forgot to mention the lack of PPG scorers in Montreal during the decade prior to 2014 and beyond. I mean, there's a reason Jose Theodore won the Vezina despite having pretty bad stats on the surface.

The statement that always gave me shutters in this period on a description of a player was "He's a 200ft player". @@bravepotatoe7513 we have MSL as coach instead of a dinosaur like therrien. I don’t think guys like hutson or demidov will have to worry. as for the milktoast thing, is there a player more devoid of any personality than pacioretty? maybe tavares, but that’s probably it.
When I wanna have some fun on my offtime with... the grass... Tiny weakling players get injured. This will not change. The HABs need at least 4 solid defensemen to be competitive.

The first three and a half minutes are enough of a statistical statement for Price to get in the HHOF.
Ayyyyy! Congratulations on your wedding, my guy! 🎉❤

If all their guys have a good season and everything comes together as one would want, they got a good run coming their way

Is Kent Hughes building a contender? Or is this core overrated?
Contender
Contender in a few uears
Running the league in five or so
I think it'll take more than people expect, but they will definitely be contenders a few years down the round.
Overrated but they have a good core

Yeah, nice to see someone who sees my boys' potential!! Habbies are going to be a team to be reckoned with very soon. Totally stacked. Can't wait.
Happy for you that you got married bro! Wish you well and loved your video like always! Keep up my guy
They've also assembled such a great development team under Rob Ramage : Francis Bouillon, Nick Carrière, Paul Byron, Alex Burrows, Lauri Korpikoski, and last but not least Marie-Philip Poulain.
Is there any other team with such a strong pool of quality people to help the kids grow to their full potential ? I doubt it.

@theclaffy1842 being known to reward loyalty isn't completely terrible.
It's a bad contract, but I'm not going to bad mouth Gallagher ever.
And in cap NHL times, you can't reward with salary. You'll get in trouble.
Congratulations on the marriage 🎉 I dig your videos
Congrats on the wedding 🥂🍾
I may follows the habs this season, man I didn t wach a game since covid but you may just got me back to it with that.
@@robertl8481 Do not agree, this based on the D men from each team.
I love your tone, you're great !
Grats on the marriage Rob wish you and your wife a long and prosperous journey!! ❤🎉 Great Vid btw. My brother is a Habs fan and I've been telling him the same thing the Canadians are a sleeping giant
He will be maybe 6'1 but 195-200 style, not 6'2
0:50 shows how good tampa Bay is at drafting. Kucherov was second round as well
And need some point lmao
Nice mini-documentary... Go Habs Go!!!
Small elite skater offensive defensemen might be the most entertaining players to watch, Hutson has been dominating the preseason so far, really nice to see.

The Habs have some unbelievably talented prospects, and signing their young core is perfect. Genuinely within the next 3-5 years they will be SCARY scary.
It's a good thing we love all style of hockey...we've been sold solid defense wins you championship (it hasnt but it brought us close) for 30 years now. Also shows you how good Price was in front of offensively anemic teams.
But I think we're ready now, give us scoring, gives us the plays and the homerunners...we will live with the turn overs for a few years even if it means a few crushing defeat and hopefully eventual success.
Finally some love towards my HABS

The contracts. Signing all the key pieces long term for very reasonable dollar amounts could ultimately be the more important part of this rebuild.

congratulations to you and your wife! Beautiful picture
You forgot to mention the lack of PPG scorers in Montreal during the decade prior to 2014 and beyond. I mean, there's a reason Jose Theodore won the Vezina despite having pretty bad stats on the surface.
HOLLY CONGRATS ON THE ENGAGEMENT BUD !!!
the habs record for most goals in a season by a player dates to 76-77 with Shutt and Lafleur at 60 goals. that's how long it's been.
Great insight , what a break down of reaching the pass to the future of the Habs , good job. Loved your video great job thank..s
Call me delusional also ghg!! Been watching them since 80' this is s different build........❤
The statement that always gave me shutters in this period on a description of a player was "He's a 200ft player". The team sucked at offensive development and were concerned more about making a player into a defensive robot who was concerned about not making defensive errors and being milktoast as a person
Look how the establishment ran Subban out town instead encouraging him.
we'll get a good idea in the next few years with hutson
@@bravepotatoe7513 we have MSL as coach instead of a dinosaur like therrien. I don’t think guys like hutson or demidov will have to worry.
as for the milktoast thing, is there a player more devoid of any personality than pacioretty? maybe tavares, but that’s probably it.
Montreal has the most cups in franchise history...........
Yes, they were the best of 6 teams many times. 32 teams now, much harder to win.

When I wanna have some fun on my offtime with... the grass... I just go onto Twitter and talk shit to Ottawa, Philly, Toronto, and Winnipeg fans because they HATE us. 😂
With Ottawa a lot of bad blood came from the Stutzle & Gallagher stuff, and Xhekaj in the preseason.
Philly because we have been giving it back 10 fold for the Michkov harassment.
Toronto is self explanitory.
Winnipeg fans are kinda weird, they got mad at us for the sweep in 2021, PLD trade rumours the first time. The fans were still upset enough that they spammed "Monahan wont get a 1st back." Then got even more upset when he did get a first from Winnipeg themselves, and Habs fans made them eat shit.
I feel like its always super fun to shit on other teams as a has fan. like nobody in mtl is under the impression we've been needing to win, and IMO, nobody has as well rounded of a prospect pool as we do. the sharks has celebrini and the hawks has bedard absolutely they're franchise players, but who else has a young goalie phenom(s), a sweatshop level roster of talented D, and capable forwards like mtl?? I don't think any other team

@@paulouellette6934 I have no reason to doubt KH so far, adult Caillou has done great with asset and cap management, I may have had some doubts with Slaf and Reinbacher when they were slow to start the year. But I am really liking how it's going now.
@@booqueefius8670 This is not meant to be a comparison, but I gained a lot of admiration for Anahiem in the last year or two. I think they are going in an amazing direction.
Their defence might not be amazing, they have a lot of offencive small guys which are good, but you can't have all small and skill. Thats why I like Solberg so much. But their right d is weak.
The forwards however are crazy, I'm iffy on Sennecke, but even without him, they have their lowest potential guy as Zegras (which is crazy), then they have McTavish and Carlsson, I like Carlsson a lot, watching a big power forward just impose himself on the league is just so fun to watch. They also stole Gauthier from Philly. (f u flyers). I like Dostál also.
