Man Treys phrasing when soloing is amazing. Really trying to mimic his phrasing helps when working on tension and release. Using lower notes to build into those high tones. Great video man! Always good to think about different areas to focus on when listening and playing!
Honestly, everything. Musicians can literally argue perpetually who the top 10 guitarists to have ever lived are and still not find the "answer" but I'm sure most would agree Trey belongs in the top 10. Not even for influence necessarily, but in regards to how scientific and surgical that man plays. It's not an exaggeration he's called a "Jedi". His sound is 100% unique and immediately recognizable as Trey. I really haven't witnessed many guitarists match his complete ability to just command a 10-20 minute guitar solo that was actually a build up into a mind blowing solo / jam. There are literally countless examples of his theory / creativity (insert your favorite 90's version of Trey here lol) but honestly 11/26/94 Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis' " Slave To The Traffic Light" is honest to god one of my all time top 10 cherished 10 minutes of music ever. That version isn't music. I swear to god Phish were all having an outer body experience watching themselves play from overhead. Mike and Fishman literally transcend what it means to be a rhythm section. It sounds like they are literally playing the soundtrack for the birth of the universe while Page and Trey are writing a verse for the birth of stars. It is the pinnacle to me of Trey being able to just abolutely play the most beautifully heart wrenching guitar solo in his Jedi form. I still listen to that song preciously as an anti depressant / anti anxiety / stress breaker. Ugh god i really could go on and on, but ya, I honestly can't narrow it down to a favorite thing. The man is just a scientist. *(I could literally write a book about Page, Mike and Fishman as well, but we're talking about Trey here so forgive me Ifor not spending more time praising their genius)*
-His ability to evoke any emotion he wants out of his guitar, or his songwriting. -ability to build and release tension -vast variety of musical styles -how you can hear him smiling through his guitar -his sense of rhythm -ability to change time feel -humility -the optimism and joy that shines through his playing when a jam goes from minor to major
In the 90s, less so now, he would hang on notes, almost as a pedal point, with a groove against the main groove. A special kind of tension that I think creates spacey jams and really complements Fish's grooves.
When I first discovered Phish over 30 years ago, what most amazed me was his crescendo/decrescendo playing. Of course the Dead did that as well but in my opinion were a bit more amorphous. Phish and Trey could always bring you to these epic peaks again and again and then bring you back down comfortably. The only new band I think that really does it closely is Goose/Rick.
Trey is my favorite player still around. He has so many skills that a video like this would be super difficult to get right, but yours, as usual, was spot on and delivered concepts of his playing that can be studied for a lifetime. Thank you for yet another great, light, goodvibe-full video, Jeff! Love the channel!
Love the sloppy on purpose!!! So creative the really great Bowie's or any great stash especially the Mansfield show from live one. Just amazing tension, and spot on with how he developed so quick he just oozes creativity because he didn't pick up guitar until junior year high school and started phish first thing in college. Just had insane ear. Great video !!👍
I had been using autofocus, but I've got a Lumix G85 and it's weak. Was always going in and out. So I just started using manual but it's challenging getting it right when filming by myself. Any advice?
I like this video series. Maybe Bob weir is next? Also great insights on Trey’s playing. I feel like you could do a whole series on his rhythm. In some ways, even when he’s soloing during the jam section, it still has a rhythmic feel to it
You're in luck. I'm planning an Allman Bros one next! Gonna touch upon Duane, Dickey, Warren and Derek. Eventually will definitely do one just for him, but I gotta work up to that!
I don’t get why ppl used to call Trey a ripoff of Jerry. I hear that influence but after listening to Phish, the dead & Trey’s solo stuff I can say that Trey stands on his own. Funny thing is I didn’t like either of those acts until I started getting into playing guitar more
I don’t hear much Jerry in him except for where Jerry just has hours and rock and jazz in him. Trey is far more technical and just all around better and more interesting to me. And actually has a great tone.
I suspect people who did that didn't actually listen to either Trey or Jerry. They were probably just getting high and dancing around without actually listening to the music. I was a huge Deadhead before I became a Phan. The first thing that really got my attention when I started listening to Phish was how radically different from the Dead they sounded. The only time Trey sounded like Jerry was when he did the Fare Thee Well shows, and that's only because he consciously practiced Jerry's solos to stay fateful to his style. But listen to him play Dead tunes with Phil Lesh and Friends, he sounds like himself 100%.
Great video. Which show/song is on in the background at the end of the video. That jam is on the tip of my tongue and can’t recall it for the life of me. Thanks! 🙏
Yeah he did it in nineties it's what stash is it's how he builds crescendos dozens of others too Bowie the slow builds. Those are my favorite concerts too though 90s : ) I'm unfortunately that old but feel lucky though went ,lemon wheel , Worcester, island tour, so much fun !! Cheers
Yeah what I learn from him is don't let him get anywhere near the Allman Brothers song In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. He got lost in space they almost had to carry him off the stage.

He's got a great ear, he makes the whole band sound great and vice versa. Hes good at grooving in the pocket and can tastefully play outside.

Trey is a great guitar player. He has his own original thing going. Great guy also.

Thanks Felipe, glad it's helpful!
Brother , you nailed it..Much thanks! Trey is the bar set for guitar players in this world.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that you had the WENT GIN playing in the background at the start/end of the video. Love it!!!
You are awesome - you’ve got so much love for guitar, phish and education; thanks for the info.
Phish = Funky grooves + tension/release + brilliant compositions
I love your personally and creativity Jeff!
Heart of a teacher!
You vibe man. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Mateo and no prob!

double check where your camera is focusing in your wide shot...you're out of focus, the background is in focus. Love what you're putting out!

❤️ the map/jam analogy, where there’s definitely a destination …But w/Phish, Just how ya get there is Anybody’s guess!!❤️
Thank you for you 🎉🎉🎉

He has a bob weir video already!
@@nathanielgale468 oops must have missed it
What about Bob?!: ua-cam.com/video/ilDidH_Ifv8/v-deo.html
@@JeffWilliamsGuitar oops haha
Love your guitar, by the way.
I would love a bit on Derek trucks. He is SO hard to figure out
You're in luck. I'm planning an Allman Bros one next! Gonna touch upon Duane, Dickey, Warren and Derek. Eventually will definitely do one just for him, but I gotta work up to that!
Great video Jeff. Trey is my favorite.
Thanks Eric.
haha luv ur sound building into the yem release! nice
Awesome video Jeff thanks man
Thanks James and no prob.

Great comments about how to adapt/adopt many of Trey's techniques! What kind of electric guitar are you playing here. It's a great tone!
It's a B&G little sister crossroads.
@@JeffWilliamsGuitar thanks for the reply. Love the sound.
Love it man!
Great editing on this one my dude 🤟😄
Thanks!
His right hand technique is second to none
Great video. Which show/song is on in the background at the end of the video. That jam is on the tip of my tongue and can’t recall it for the life of me. Thanks! 🙏
Came to me in my sleep- Went Gin
Well said dude.
I just got a T-shirt off of Ebay a few weeks ago that says, "TREY IS A JEDI!!!"
Nuff said!
Nice Jeff!
Ahhh…5:40 the Went Gin. What a way to go out.
The video is exactly 5:55😂 Nice!
yo im so happy you made this video
Trey has great hair.
Whats the date of that jam in the beginning? I inow ive heard it before, but cant place my finger on it!
Went Gin.
@@TheChknptpie thanks! should've been pretty obvious hahaha.
@@tombadil64 all good I forget what song it is all the time during shows that are good! hahaha
I'm with ya except the sloppy on purpose comment. Trey was rarely sloppy in the 90s. I would attribute any recent sloppiness to older age 😉
Miles Davis used ‘sloppy on purpose’ to great advantage as a stylistic trademark while his chops were improving - not declining with age.

Hey now--anyone up for a Jeff rundown on those Goose guys? Hear some good stuff now&then.
Video is 5:55 long. Nice touch
Was looking for this comment😂

killer video! thanky!!!💗♥️💗
Yeah what I learn from him is don't let him get anywhere near the Allman Brothers song In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. He got lost in space they almost had to carry him off the stage.
What song is in the intro of the vid?
Hell yeah
Thanks frank zappa!
Phish are super duper improvisers, I think, however the songwriting not so much...
They lose me with the terrible lyrics
Just play the goddamn song!!!! Why the wait???
To learn from Trey you should take lessons from the same guy he took lessons from . . .
💯⭕️❤🚀
Every time I try and add my playing to the common consciousness the neighbours call the cops
😂
learn those cover songs, kids...
