I was there at those shows. Its wonderful to hear the explanations on what we were hearing that tour. It was mind boggling! Now we know at least one of the reasons why! Thanks Trey
I wish he would talk about his gear more because he's so well spoken and colorful with his words. We get a rig rundown about twice a decade and the last one was hosted by someone who doesn't play or listen to guitar at tf all.
AMFM - and I think it gets even better in 99’. 98 has a heaviness I don’t love but 99’, I don’t know what they did but it just tickles my ear pussy!....it does help to have Languedoc on sound back then too, all his tones back in 1.0 matched with languedoc on sound are better then what he is doing right now.
samsaraa I hear you. Still the fender setup was prob my fav. Less compressed with snap. Agree with you...not into current sound. Love to hear him talk about it tho. ✌🏻
I do like Treys new tone a lot. I saw him tonight in Seattle and he had the Trainwreck ( Jan Marie I believe) right out on the stage next to him in plain view, not secreted behind everything like how I have seen it before. He is kind of painting with broad strokes here, a big reason for the change in amp tone that happened in the mid 1970's was the addition of another gain stage and a master-volume control that would make it so you could generate distortion in the preamp at lower volume settings, instead of in the power amp. Non-master volume amps just sound better, but you have to crank them to get that sound and it can get loud. Sure, if money is no object, go get a NOS set of Mullards if you can find them, but I'm telling you, you can get a pretty good tone without breaking the bank with the right circuit and quality modern components, and there are lots of boutique amp makers out there these days that do just that.
Phil M - ya but I’m sorry, it does not even come close to sounding how it did back then. Although he might think his tone back then wasn’t perfect, it was his and everyone knew it his and that’s what made him him....I hear more grey soup now than ever, just saying. With that said this is amazing and I need more I absolutely love this kinda stuff! Thx for posting🙏🙏🙏. Trey is Jedi!
The “grey soup” you hear now could be the el34 Marshall amp that is almost the opposite tone of 1994. His 6l6 amp sounds just like his fender deluxe. Most guitar amp audiophiles don’t like treys og tone & Trey realized why after talking with ken Fischer. What trey is saying here is %100 accurate. Surprised it took so long for him to dial in his rig
I do fairly well with a Dumble type pedal, being the Ethos TLE. It seems to do well, right? It is a little harsh. But, that's the cool thing about Mark III's They are like a bucking bronco of an amplifier. Should've done what me and Steve Kimock did a long time ago. Get a dual 6L6 Two Rock. Ken Fisher is a legend, but so is Bill Krinard. ua-cam.com/video/H3XqWGF0jA8/v-deo.html
I’m glad he’s so excited but, the “Trey 94” button doesn’t sound anything like what he sounded like in 1994. Also, check out the NYE 95 Strange Design video. The Leslie effect is perfect. Now...meh.
He's backwards on impedances and cable runs. To drive a long cable or a lot of pedals, you want a LOW impedance signal source and low impedance cables. Low impedance = high current drive capability. This is what you need to push a long cable and lots of effects.,
@@tylerwilkey13interesting. I think Bakers is when his tone became absolutely unlistenable. It has gotten better since he ditched the Komet and Ambikabs, but still he hasn’t tamed the high end yet.
Sco - couldn’t agree more! When he plays stuff like Reba (which was his example) now his tone is all grey soup. It doesn’t come close to having the clean bite it used too. Trey I love you but you are wrong here, bring back the Mesa!!!!
Sco -couldn't have said it better. That tone was legendary... LEGENDARY! I think all musicians should explore, but I might have to resort to criminal activity to make sure Trey gets his tone back 😂
huh, this is from only 2 years ago so idk what he's talking about... I don't think any players except maybe really amateur players put reverb and delay at the start of the signal chain. Everyone knows those go in the effects loop or at the end of the chain. There are many reasons why most people's tone sucks, but that mistake isn't made by too many people.
@@jada90 Trey wasn't saying that, although I totally feel ya the grammar was confusing. If you go back to that part of the convo, they had been talking about the problem of grey soup, and Trey was saying was that most peoples tones suck because it's a "grey soup" (for, like you said, a variety of reasons), but he wasn't trying to say that their tones suck because of putting reverb/delay at the start. That was just one example of what causes grey soup among many.
Trey’s late 90’s early 2000’s sound was the cleanest and most present. Around the Brooklyn album it took a turn for the worse. Don’t like the raspier sound.

I don't like his new tone. Please bring back the fender/ross/tube screamer or the mark3, or the groove tube. New tone is muddy, flubby, mushy. Want the old high headroom clean sound. Please

Not a long or boring answer Trey!! Could listen to this for hours.
so stupendous, playing quality part tube
I love that Trey gives a nod to Derek. Tone is so important to both of them.
This video blew my mind. I’m not going to lie.
The Derek set....
I love this. I could listen to him talk all day long about the music

It’s awesome to watch Phish play while listening to Trey talk about his rig.

I still like the the deluxe reverb setup starting at Island Tour 1998. Mids with bite

Get a ceriatone - he makes an exact clone of the trainwreck express using all high end parts. It’s cheap cause it’s made in Malaysia. Hardwired too!

phish has a lighting rig that looks so amazing but the mid 90s dead shows and early to mid eighties dead shows are the best..

So Trey got hip to Jerry's O.B.E.L. system. On board effects loop. More or less without saying it.
Trey does not use an onboard effects loop on his guitar.
Chris Michels no not in the guitar, but there are ways to do it on the floor in the effects signal chain looping.
he has been doing that since the early 90s, as does every guitarist with some $
