StichMethod Guitar great video lesson! Really helpful points in this. I’d like to message you privately about your backing-track situation. Is there a PM tab I’m not seeing on the UA-cam profile?
Dude thank you so much. I originally started playing guitar to phish but had no understanding of what he was doing and gave up. Fast forward 10 years and I have the technical skills to keep up and now the musical understanding of what he’s doing. Best day ever over here. It all clicked! Thanks again.
Probably the best explanation I've found of Trey's lead work I've found on the web, keep it coming brotha! A lot of this stuff I find myself doing subconsciously due to all the Phish I consume/play, but it's awesome to get the theory behind it to connect your brain to your fingers. Truly sublime lesson, thanks!
This was awesome. I've been playing guitar about 20 years, admittedly am way behind where I could be if I practiced music, and drilled for real, and not didn't just dick around learning songs and noodling. I grew up on phish and memorized tons of songs along the way and I kind of would hit that 6th intuitively playing around on some phish tunes just because I felt it, and now I know why! What you've done here, instead of getting super technical or detailed on a given melody or solo(like, here is the YEM arpeggio), is distilled a PRINCIPLE that expresses that 'Treyness' . I have always found that great (highly effective) teaching comes from making principles simple, and this is a fun one to play with. Whether this is a teaching principle you work with, or just how you decided to go about this video, I got a lot out of it. It's opened up just a bit more freedom Thanks for what you do and if we ever get concerts back post covid mania, and I happen to bump into you at a show or on lot(west coast) I'll be sure to buy you a beer or a heady cheese quesadilla
OMG Thank you Ian, this is grate!! I've been studying Phish for a while now and this lesson fills a huge gap in my understanding of Trey's techniques. I can totally hear and see what he's doing now thanks to you my phriend, my phriend!!
They did what all of us are trying to do.. find music/bands that inspire us and further it into our own style of playing. Thanks for all of your videos especially this one.
Nice jam. i saw Jerry Garcia for the first time and Phish for the first time within a couple month in 1989 and I have been trying to learn this stuff ever since... 63 Grateful Dead shows and 30 Phish shows later, I am still trying to learn this stuff :)
You come the closest to unlocking Trey's code... Very cool. It's amazing watching this how many similarities Trey has to Jerry's style yet places one or two notes which make him unique, especially when he inserts a core (chord?) note in place of the minor.
amazing synchronicity... i bought a box of donuts today... my subconscious was thinking about bakers dozen.. just found ur channel & PHISH stuff.. been binge watching... i only have about 2 years of experience strumming chords... no solo experience.. wish i hadn't dropped the ball.. but that is how i roll.
Whoooooah... What a GREAT lesson. You are exactly what I was looking for. Not a nasty lesson. For those who know the basics, you are super clear... The move up to the next chord tone at the end of a 4 bar phrase was SUPER helpful! Thank you!
Yeah, that's it alright! I've always played that major 6th note by ear knowing it had the trey sound but I never understood it so well until now. Thank you!
I've saved this video to watch for awhile, but I wasn't quite ready. Best thing to do first thing in the morning. Great energy and a very good teacher. Thanks for posting, this was brilliant. I'm finally studying Trey's music and if you ever end up at any Dick's shows in Denver, let me know. Keep jamming.
Really great lesson. I always hear about "chord tones" and how to use them to build tension, but you've articulated it really clearly here. I was playing along and a lot of things started clicking- finally felt like I was getting out of that repetitive pentatonic noodle and into something with real structure. Cheers.
Hey brotha just wanted to let you know how much o love this channel. You've literally been posting videos about everything I want to learn. And the you explain everything so easily, every time I watch one of you're videos I notice myself become a better player, it's almost like having a personal guitar tutor lol. Also Jerry and trey inspired me to play music so it's always been important to me to understand what they're doing musically. Thanks so much and please keep uploading!!! Hope to see at a show one day lol!
Would love to see an example of "Trey phrases in three's". Something simple so I can expand on at home. Maybe you can show us a slowed down version! Keep them coming!
Killer lesson man, I have never been able to find any lessons that really show Trey's style this in depth. If you could do one for Jerry too, I would love you forever.
It’s funny because I always want to redo this video because I have a better guitar and better sound now, but the video does well. Maybe I’ll rerelease it later this year
Hey Stich...another sweet lesson. Grabbed the chart to work on this. I know you are not into "5 Trey licks...." style vids, but I always find it helpful if someone shares some basic licks to get started and then knewbs like me can build from that. Thanks again.
Thanks for posting this video! I was initially lured in by the Phish / Trey aspect but it has helped fill a big gap of my understanding of solos in general.
Holy cow Ian this is great. I just finished spinning the atlanta kdf (my fav one-7-31-15) and this lesson helped me so much in understanding what Trey is doing and how to replicate it! Cheers bro!
Awesome!! Great concepts! I just have to take exception with something you said at the beginning. You do not need to learn a Phish song or any other artists songs note for note to play them out or anywhere. If you want to, cool, but I never do. I like to learn the general song and then use my own music sense and playing style to attempt to make them my own. Great work!!
Well my friend, another Great lesson. After catching the Phish show in Jax last month, I have been ever "ear-ful" for the progressions. You have shed some light. More theory to digest...now time to "chop some wood"...Thanks...See you at Wanee? Jam On!!!
Sounds more like Garcia’s noodling than Treys. Garcia’s playing was very boxy at times, where asTrey is more linear. Constantly using half and whole step bends throughout even with his modal playing. For this progression he’d most likely be mixing major/minor pentatonic and mixolydian. Within all that he’d naturally be flirting with some Dorian notes. Your tone is also leaning heavenly in that direction as well. Cool channel I like the idea. I was gonna do a Similar Jam band/funk guitar thing years ago after having some success with my piano channel. But I gig out a lot these days. I feel bad when my subscribers ask for more lessons, but I just don’t have the time or energy. Keep it up though its all good stuff. I hope more people subscribe. If you ever wanna learn some keys just look up Tyler Thompson piano lessons. Got a few dead tunes in the mix.
Thank you for providing a good explanation of trey solo method. When it comes to compositions like Stash, Freezer, or Horn, I see these are just songs one has to learn note for note. The interplay between all the members means they know where the song is going at any time. They have the structure, but then fuck with it so hard live there is no way to keep up. I would like to know how Trey gets so much sustain in order to hold out one note for so long while the chords progress underneath like Squirming Coil
Aloha! Really great lesson and well said throughout. I really appreciate a lesson with detailed theory. I subbed immediately and really look forward to watching more of your Vids. Take care and mucho alohas! Happy jamming!
Great lesson, man! I bought an Ollandoc guitar a few months ago and I thought I should learn how to improvise properly if I'm going to play such an instrument.
Hi Stich, I really love the way you teach...especially how you focus on the theory behind Trey's soloing style. How about a lesson on Trey's rhythm style? particularly how he really gets into flaunting his rhythm chops on some versions of Suzy Greenberg. What do you think? Learning A Lot from you, thank you very much.
Good lesson Ian, as always! thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! Well explained and no fancy stuff in the playing. U stick to what you tell, I like that. I like the Song Sample in the Jar. Can you do a lesson on it? Those climbing tension lines in the solo... Down with disease and chalk dust torture would be cool, too ;) Greets Manuel, Germany
I enjoyed the lesson very much! Really helped me get a grasp on the sounds I've been playing with in my head since being influenced by phish. Could you possibly do a video on the way that Trey often moves between scales on the neck? Specifically, the way he almost plays arpeggios on the top few strings past the 1st position scale before resolving on the 1 or the major 3rd in 4th position. I noticed when you changed from 1st to 4th position you sort of just jumped and I'd love to learn how Trey almost walks up the neck to seamlessly transition between those positions or resolve on a crescendo. I hope I explained that well haha.
Finally! Fantastic. I was just playing around with Dorian for Tweezer. Do you believe in an approach to go from tonal center to tonal center. Here it would be C to C, Tweezer A to A? Bad phrasing of my question, but are all licks starting and resolving on C here?
Super interesting video stitch! Any chance you can address why c dorian typically means we are in the key of Bb, which would give us a 2 chord of C minor, but instead the 2 chord is C7, and we can solo over it just the same? How can we make chord changes like this in our own music?
Excellent video, as always - thanks! Question: you say use the Dorian (which has a flat third) and the minor pentatonic (also containing a flat third) but you also say use the chord tones of the C7 (which includes the major third). So, is both the major and minor third fair game for the solo? I get that the major six is the money note, but curious about those dang thirds! Thx again...
Mighty Bold title…. We shall see. Well danged if this ol hunt n pick er ain’t been cultured. Proper like. I’m a 63 year OLD, old years, been Trying to play guitar for forty years. Hippie. The whole nine on that. But relatively small doses of the Dead and Phish. So I guess not the whole nine. Dead and Hippie are like. Yeah. I’m working on it. This was enlightening. Nice job. Thanks 🤙
Dude, love your channel! Subscribed and Thank You! Could you discuss Trey's vibrato technique please? Most often I see the advice to anchor the space between the thumb and first finger on the neck and pivot there by rotating the forearm. From watching videos, that doesn't seem to me like what Trey is doing. Looks like he's more pushing his fingers up and down. Would love to hear your thoughts.
StichMethod Guitar You know what, I've been watching some videos of Trey and I think one could refer to his style of vibrato as "whole arm" vibrato. Clapton does this too.
Stitch. KDF also sounds VERY similar to the Birds of a feather jam as both use Cm pent and C Dorian mode I believe. Can you basically just use this lesson for BOAF as well?
do you hit the notes randomly? I got the idea that you're climbing up the scale to accent the chord notes, but i couldnt figure if you hit those notes consistently. Hope my question makes sense haha
DUDE You gotta get into Phish, they are an amazing band! Start with songs like Chalkdust Torture, Stash, Ghost, and Kill Devil Falls of course ;) The live shows are where it's at!

Hey man just wanted to say even 7 years later this vid is still helping people. As a younger jam band fan and an avid guitarist I say keep it up!!!

A lot of this stuff I find myself doing subconsciously due to all the Phish I consume/play, but it's awesome to get the theory behind it to connect your brain to your fingers. Man, it’s scary how accurate this is. You hear this absolutely everywhere in Trey’s playing.
This was awesome. I just want to say thank you for providing these lessons. You do a really great job in explaining the concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
"I stand at the base of the mountain" as a beginner guitar player and thoroughly enjoyed that, you have a happy phishy jerry vibe!
Thank you so much, only 10 minutes in and can see exactly how Trey is doing what he does.
You've just changed my life. Thank you!

You are a great teacher. You communicate and get your points across well. Keep on keepin' on. Thanks man.
You're the best, Stich!
Yes! This is it! Thank you! Phish fan and occasional guitar hack for 30 years here. Can’t wait to try this.
It’s funny because I always want to redo this video because I have a better guitar and better sound now, but the video does well. Maybe I’ll rerelease it later this year
@@StichMethodGuitar Well, it works as is, but if you do redo it with better gear make sure the same info is in there! Thanks again.
The root notes are so much like Garcia. Different flavors from Jerry to Trey though. Awesome lesson. Amazing work my friend.
This is one of my favorites, glad you enjoyed!
wash your mouth out...trey shouldnt even be mentioned in the same breath as jerry
Hey Stich...another sweet lesson. Grabbed the chart to work on this. I know you are not into "5 Trey licks...." style vids, but I always find it helpful if someone shares some basic licks to get started and then knewbs like me can build from that. Thanks again.

I cannot thank you enough for this. It’s exactly what I’ve been trying to find. Makes perfect sense and I’m doing it already!
Funny cause I’m working on a new Trey video as we speak! Glad you enjoyed.
This lesson has unlocked so much for me and my playing! Thanks so much!

Really great ,simple, effective lesson.I also hear the outline of a dominant be bop scale as well, in what is being played.
Wow, this was very, very informative. Just watching this I already feel like a better improviser.
Yes, this is the secret sauce. Thank you.
Love your videos dude! You've helped me a ton. Thanks!!
EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW
Enjoyed is an understatement.
I enjoyed this comment
Glad we all got through that together.... great lesson sir

Dude this was so good thank you. I haven’t played in weeks and this just inspired me to go have a super fun jam
Awesome to hear! Gonna revamp it as well as I think I can add more to it. Rock on
far out, solid, and right on
Such a great explanation.
Great lesson! I immediately made use of it. Thanks for the insight.
You are the MAN. Keep 'em coming
StichMethod Guitar The track does the trick, but I wish it was longer because I keep having to stop playing to replay it
Very educational as are all your vids and great fun trying to play along thanks
love your energy man, thanks so much for a passionate and fun lesson!

thank you ! i love your teaching style helping me a lot i never heard of fish lol or is it phish what lp should i listen to first ?

thank you pal!

Thanks! I love me some Trey!
Kinda funny that a lesson on Trey's playing in 92-94 would be completely different.
do you hit the notes randomly? I got the idea that you're climbing up the scale to accent the chord notes, but i couldnt figure if you hit those notes consistently. Hope my question makes sense haha

Don't worry I edited it.
Do you sell those stichmethod shirts in 4XL? Asking for a friend.
Bakers dozen mike song jam is a perfect example of his climaxing solos check it out it's beautiful
Can I still buy the Jam Chart? Link isn't working for me.

There is certainly a lot more to it than this but it’s a good place to start.
