It can be very valuable to have a integrated GPU, never know when your dedicated one fails. And its even better if you know it can do some light gaming.
or you could buy an old graphics card for $1 or get plenty cheap thrownaway ones. of course can have some drawback if really old such as not supporting 4k. Id say barebones igpu (like this) is worth $10.
@lukasgroot my 13 year old self didn't know about the concept of framerate, and especially because all my friends had very similar specs we all kinda thought that's how the game is supposed to be. I also used to play Doom and House of the Dead a lot and those ran very smoothly, but they also "looked" different so again, I thought that's just how it is.
@delatomvione9943 tbh ever since I switched to a high refresh rate monitor even 60 Hz feels like a compromise. Anything at 100Hz or above is way nicer, and thankfully my PC is fast enough to pull off that kind of framerate in most games.
I do genuinely hope that Integrated GPUs continue their trajectory upwards in performance. Although I do wonder if they are getting better or we are getting older and thus just playing some of the older games (which they would almost definitely be better at)
They're definitely getting better, not too long ago that you were lucky if games were even able to launch on most iGPUs. Although performance wise it's still not that great, the best iGPUs nowadays are still only comparable to midrange graphics from ~10 years ago. Most of the improvement is from stuff like FSR/XeSS and better drivers.
G'day @burnplaysgames, they are definitely getting better R7 8700G 780M IGP - Shader: 768, TMU: 48, ROP: 32, CU: 12 (15W) is only about 10% slower than RX570 - Shader: 2048, TMU: 128, ROP: 32, CU: 32 (150W) so when you compare them in the same games you get similar performance, but the other thing that happens is the performance required for games also increases so IGPs don't ever seem to be good enough.

If you ever do this again it would be cool to test older games, from the 2010s or so, to show how far we've advanced as the games would have needed a GPU to run back then. Seeing something like skyrim running its graphics on a CPU "only" would be interesting
This was basically my setup back on January, while waiting to save up for my GPU. It was really handy to have a fully functional PC for a while, essentially splitting the PC purchase in two. I played a lot of Dark Souls 2 at medium settings, and obviously easy to run 2D games like Cuphead, Blasphemous, Disco Elysium, etc. It also worked great with emulators, which are more CPU than GPU bound. I had lots of fun on PCSX2 with NFSU2 & San Andreas and Kingdom Hearts 2.
@@TheSlowDudeAs someone who knows many people with hardware this old, you only have hardware this old for one reason: Money And you're like "Oh modern 4 cores are so cheap and so much better" and you're right, they are compared to other options but people stuck with these types of chips can't even afford that. Some people I've helped get a PC had a total budget of 70 dollars. You aren't getting a modern quad core with that and the rest of the components, not easily at least.
This is really interesting! I'm running a 7600 (non-x) because I don't really need a gpu yet. I was absolutely shocked that ray tracing was supported because it runs worse than anything. At low settings, I can play Doom Eternal at about 40 to 50 fps and minecraft & terraria at above 70 consistently
I have a R7 7700 and I used its iGPU until I got my 4070s. For modern gaming it's kinda bad. That said, it is surprisingly capable when it comes to emulation. 3DS, Switch, GameCube, WiiU, all ran buttery smooth at 1080p.
AMDs desktop CPUs have mobile GPUs since AM4 and the 780M can even more than this model! The mid-range mobile GPUs are in the 8000 series and in some 7000 series...
Back in the day when I used an iGPU for gaming I remember mine overclocked so well. I clocked it up to 1300mhz from 900. It didn't scale exactly, but it was worth a good 10-20%fps in some titles. Together with overclocked DDR and the cpu at stock speeds (and a decent cooler!) it managed quite well.

If I remember it was best to overclock either the CPU or iGPU - but not both or it would warm up too much or hit TDP. A mild oc on both was fine, but the further you pushed one the less headroom you had with the other!
30 fps for cp2077 is already very respectable.i remember trying to play skyrim on a craptop from 2020 and could barely get 20 fps with its cpu and igpu
Ha! I saw a system w/one of these processors/integrated video and no video card recently. The owner bought a GTX 1050 to put in the system. I was curious so looked it up later wondering if the integrated would be better than the 1050. I wasn't able to do any testing myself and after I saw the specs I thought... integrated = that's got to be terrible. Glad you did this video, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for gaming and kind of like the idea of having the option.
the comparison between gtx 1050 to amd igpu (that is Vega 7 igpu in 3600g and above) has been out there years ago. the 1050 usually perform 40% to 60% better than Vega igpu simply because it has vram. Any other note on igpu is that handhelds are able to run some high spec games in 60fps, that should make anyone to question more if the igpu on desktop is worth it... because the tech capability is there, but AMD choose not to publish it on PC, which is why I don't see any merit of 7000 series being labeled as 'great performance for igpu' because the price to performance is subpar compared to last gen.

I don't know why people make this thing out as something it's never intended, nor marketed, for. The plain 7000 series aren't even considered as APUs.

I actually didn't know my 7950X3D even had an iGPU until a few days *after* I built my 7900 XTX system because no one buying this beast will *not* have a dedicated card, so no reviewers actually mentioned there was an iGPU.
Funny story but I finally decided to build my PC early this year, finalized everything but the GPU by April and bought most of the parts mid May except a case and a GPU. I decided to wait for the GPU prices to drop (which they never did) and since then, I've just been using a 7600 with 32GB of DDR5 with a GT 1030.... Yeah, you read that right, a tiny GT 1030 that I was gifted back in 2019 to put it in an 10 year (at the time) old i5 computer which itself was handed down to me by my brother. So, now it's been 5 months since I built my new computer and I've been waiting for the GPU prices to drop (which they evidently never did) and have been running a 7600 with a 1030 (at least it's the gddr5 version of it). Hopefully, 7000 series will drop in price in the future just enough so I can buy at least a 7600, right now it costs around $280, unfortunately I can't stretch my budget so far, $240 is all I can spend and only a 6600 non-XT is available at that price point. Wish me luck if you've read so far!
I love having onboard graphics as it's nice to know if my primary 4090 or any future dedicated GPUs fail I have a temporary backup to get a fully functional system again without needing to keep other dedicated GPUs lying about. When I used Intel for years before switching over to AM4 with the 5000 series it was a backup feature I missed. Was so glad when AMD added it to the 7000 series and for onboard graphics the performance is pretty decent.
By my calculations, the 2 CU iGPU is significantly weaker than a Vega iGPU. But this isn't really an APU. It is a CPU that just happens to have an integrated basic display adapter.
I'd like to see a benchmark using the Hybrid GFX option enabled in BIOS, where you leave the iGPU enabled and your monitor plugged into the motherboard, while also having a dGPU installed. It's supposed to function like a laptop - less demanding stuff runs on the iGPU, saving power, while more demanding stuff uses the dGPU and is passed through the iGPU to your monitor.
For two gpu cores its amazing it can even run some of these games. Can't wait to see the upcoming 40 CU strix APU for desktop can do. While it raised the cost adding the display ability helped the sales. Also back in the day many returned Ryzen chips thinking they was broken not knowing they had no display output.
I do honestly feel the igpu performance is rather good for what's going on, that tiny little processor chip is handling enough to be a playable experiance with many games and usable if you had to fall back on it while replacing a gpu or wanting to build something and get the gpu later. When I think about igpu's my thoughts always go back to the very low end intel tuff from 10+ years ago, this is miles better haha.
You better believe I was enjoying Minecraft on my Celeron laptop with no GPU as a kid. All 20fps of it 😎. In all seriousness it's shocking how far iGPUs have come in the last couple years...
Nice video, as always! I must say that I am quite confused, it has a similar and even inferior performance than Vega 11 included in old models. It would be nice if for future videos you could set up more VRAM via resizable bar, to test higher texture settings. It's a big advantage of using AMD iGPUs
Even with the lowest performing games it would give you an idea of what you might want to play when you get your good GPU (if you get could them for low or no).
The iGPU in the Ryzen 7950X3D is basically a cut down 610m, which is a cut down 680m. It is still impressive at getting 25fps in Horizon: Forbidden West at 720p, medium settings with FSR balanced. Edit: this is better than the UHD G1 in the i5-1035G1 and the UHD 770 in the I9-12900HX.
I had thought that perhaps the iGPUs were catching up, and we could take them more seriously, but then all the games started demanding a bunch of VRAM, so never mind. Still, there are a LOT of games that can play just fine on typical iGPUs, now, which makes them a solid starting point for a build. The rest of the CPU isn't even sweating for most of the tests, so a $200 AMD 6600 GPU should wake a system right up, with headroom to use even more GPU. Like others have said, you would always have a workable backup solution in place in case the discrete GPU fails, and that's great.
i love the 610M in my 7800X3D, i use it to offload things from my dedicated gpu such as my browser and stuff like discord are being rendered on the iGPU (it also nets me better decoders for the browser doing this)
I've seen the prices of the 8600G falling a bit, about similar to a 7600. Would like to see how those stack up with a 60/600 tier graphics card. I have a 1650 rn but dead GPU's are always a possibility so that back up is necessary.
It is kinda wild, that my iGPU (Have an 7600) will give me almost the same experience i had with RDR2 when it came out on my old Xbox one. On my 55 inch 4K TV. In 1080p (? :D Or 720.. i do not know without looking.).
I like my iGPU on the ryzen5 7600 , I just dedicate it to a tv running chrome to watch youtube/netflix etc. from my computer while the 4060 does gaming on my main monitor.

me too, i didnt notice any increased latency and my pc is very energy efficient on desktop since my dedicated 6700 xt gpu turns off and pulls only 4 watt
Any FSR/DLSS/etc. that isn't framegen will always improve (lower) latency so long as the framerate goes up (FSR 2 / XeSS might LOWER framerates on some GPU's compared to the native resolution though).
I'm curious what kind of performance you'll get with Optimus-type usage. Many of the X870 boards with USB4 only support piping the integrated video over USB4, rather than having a DisplayPort input.
In another 5ish Years integrated graphics should be doing pretty good! When I got into PC gaming I was using an Athlon dual core @ 2.8Ghz (forgot the model), an x1650 Pro and I think 1-2GB of Memory. I somehow played all through Crysis and even played the crap out of multiplayer at 15-25 fps and still had a blast... I've never been so good at an mp game as I was at Crysis- I'd regularly have matches with 50-60 kills and 0-3 deaths and I've never gotten anywhere near that kind of k/d ratio ever since- I think probably because we ALL had sub-par systems and were all running at those sort of fps back then! Crysis was ahead of its time and still looks good- I'm actually replaying though it right now (the original, not the remaster- don't much like the remaster and they're missing the flying mission in it), but on a 5700xt so I'm getting about 90fps maxed out at 1440p :D
Should play Half Life 2 and Starcraft 2 just fine 😊 Probably Starcraft remastered, Command and conquer remastered as well... Those run fine on a gt430 lol

I remember getting better framerates in cs2 using the igpu on the r7 7800x3d, I'm guessing the extra cache is helping somewhat. Or maybe I just cranked fsr higher.
To be honest, very impressive for a GPU that's only benefits over the Nintendo Switch's GPU is the newer Architecture and higher bandwidth (and far better CPU paired with it) FLOP wise it actually isn't that far off Swtich's GPU docked lol, and it has far less cache and is literally half the width of the Swtich's GPU. Mind you a 7600 alone will beat Switch due to the better CPU and higher bandwidth. But Switch's GPU if paired with similar CPU and Bandwidth environment probably would overshoot it.
Where's those mendocino APU handheld PC from AYN or ayaneo? It's the same igpu as this i assume. If we can play CP2077 for 250$ that's still a decent choice for some. Because ultra performance FSR at 6" screen won't be that bad

I have a 12900kf and when I upgraded I used it for a Plex server but I quickly realized no video encoding then I upgraded to a i7 14700k. I will never buy a cpu without a igpu again.
Yeah, it's not worth the money to lose a useful backup graphics options, if you want to do some GPU troubleshooting, for example. And yup, the Intel encoding capabilities are pretty great!
The CPU really does a huge difference because i have a 2060 but I got a shitty old cpu and I cant get 30 fps in cyberpunk when I should be getting way more.
My R9 7900 has the onboard and the intent was, use the onboard for a second monitor, leave the GPU for gaming, streaming, recording exclusively but Windows 10 didn't like it. Crashed a lot. Haven't tried it on Windows 11 yet.

If you can, please, change testing for Elden ring to the castle area, where birds atack you and there are exploasive barrels. I was testing rx460 2gb for fun, to see if it can run it and this area made in completly unplayable, no matter the settings. Maybe someone can give you safe file, coz I do not have it now. btw. rx460 / rx560 / gtx1050 are around 2x better than vega7 / gt1030 / rx550.
It'll work in a pinch, and it gives you options. The other thing is that as PCs have become more powerful, more games are easy to run even by a new 'potato'.
There is only so much to expect in all fairness. The amount of silicone is limited on the chip to be shared with silicone of the cpu. That being said it does what it needs to do and that is display a still pretty reasonable image and gaming capability. But missing a physical gpu in your pc just looks sad…😢
So what's the current consensus on the benefits of disabling iGPU when running a dedicated GPU? I have a 7600x and it's running pretty hot even when undervolted in a mini-itx case with air cooling.

you must test 8700G not 7000,,,7000 graphic is in minimum for start windows only

that's something worth mentioning, emulation is usually cpu bound, so for emulation this chip is pretty good 😀

Was so glad when AMD added it to the 7000 series and for onboard graphics the performance is pretty decent.
My brother only just realized he's been using his 7800x3d igpu instead of his 2060 lol, and he wasn't even having a bad time.

@abibirawa4119 all sorts of different games actually. Even Arc Ascended lmao. He was getting about 40fps in Arc Ascended 1080 optimized, not low lol.
By my calculations, the 2 CU iGPU is significantly weaker than a Vega iGPU. But this isn't really an APU. It is a CPU that just happens to have an integrated basic display adapter.
It still faster than the integrated GPU in 14th gen Intel CPUs, only 32 Execution units, it performs well for a display adapter.

I'd like to see a benchmark using the Hybrid GFX option enabled in BIOS, where you leave the iGPU enabled and your monitor plugged into the motherboard, while also having a dGPU installed. It's supposed to function like a laptop - less demanding stuff runs on the iGPU, saving power, while more demanding stuff uses the dGPU and is passed through the iGPU to your monitor.

For two gpu cores its amazing it can even run some of these games. Can't wait to see the upcoming 40 CU strix APU for desktop can do. While it raised the cost adding the display ability helped the sales. Also back in the day many returned Ryzen chips thinking they was broken not knowing they had no display output.
I do honestly feel the igpu performance is rather good for what's going on, that tiny little processor chip is handling enough to be a playable experiance with many games and usable if you had to fall back on it while replacing a gpu or wanting to build something and get the gpu later.
When I think about igpu's my thoughts always go back to the very low end intel tuff from 10+ years ago, this is miles better haha.
I'd like to see the results for this with GZDoom and Quake with some heavy duty mods.
The fact this runs cyberpunk its amazing has it is, and runs GTA 5 , near 60 its amaizing....
You better believe I was enjoying Minecraft on my Celeron laptop with no GPU as a kid. All 20fps of it 😎. In all seriousness it's shocking how far iGPUs have come in the last couple years...

Nice video, as always! I must say that I am quite confused, it has a similar and even inferior performance than Vega 11 included in old models. It would be nice if for future videos you could set up more VRAM via resizable bar, to test higher texture settings. It's a big advantage of using AMD iGPUs
You should try to overclock it... Skatterbench had managed to push the iGPU to 3ghz. Would be fun to see.
Even with the lowest performing games it would give you an idea of what you might want to play when you get your good GPU (if you get could them for low or no).
The iGPU in the Ryzen 7950X3D is basically a cut down 610m, which is a cut down 680m. It is still impressive at getting 25fps in Horizon: Forbidden West at 720p, medium settings with FSR balanced.
Edit: this is better than the UHD G1 in the i5-1035G1 and the UHD 770 in the I9-12900HX.

Ryzen CPUs have Radeon display GPUs or 700 series mobile GPUs (depending on the modell) and the 780M is around the performance of a GTX 1060.
I had thought that perhaps the iGPUs were catching up, and we could take them more seriously, but then all the games started demanding a bunch of VRAM, so never mind. Still, there are a LOT of games that can play just fine on typical iGPUs, now, which makes them a solid starting point for a build. The rest of the CPU isn't even sweating for most of the tests, so a $200 AMD 6600 GPU should wake a system right up, with headroom to use even more GPU. Like others have said, you would always have a workable backup solution in place in case the discrete GPU fails, and that's great.
But here's the thing. I can increase the amount of RAM I have on the system to increase my effective VRAM. So its not entirely moot.
i love the 610M in my 7800X3D, i use it to offload things from my dedicated gpu such as my browser and stuff like discord are being rendered on the iGPU (it also nets me better decoders for the browser doing this)
I've seen the prices of the 8600G falling a bit, about similar to a 7600. Would like to see how those stack up with a 60/600 tier graphics card. I have a 1650 rn but dead GPU's are always a possibility so that back up is necessary.
It is kinda wild, that my iGPU (Have an 7600) will give me almost the same experience i had with RDR2 when it came out on my old Xbox one. On my 55 inch 4K TV. In 1080p (? :D Or 720.. i do not know without looking.).
Now a comparison to Intels current iGPUs would be neat
I like my iGPU on the ryzen5 7600 , I just dedicate it to a tv running chrome to watch youtube/netflix etc. from my computer while the 4060 does gaming on my main monitor.

I use it in hybrid graphics mode as a pass through for my 5700xt, improved FPS by about 20fps in doom eternal.

me too, i didnt notice any increased latency and my pc is very energy efficient on desktop since my dedicated 6700 xt gpu turns off and pulls only 4 watt

Any FSR/DLSS/etc. that isn't framegen will always improve (lower) latency so long as the framerate goes up (FSR 2 / XeSS might LOWER framerates on some GPU's compared to the native resolution though).
You can everclock the Igpu quite a bit, 2.7GHZ is a common spot but I could get 3 GHZ on my igpu
I'm curious what kind of performance you'll get with Optimus-type usage. Many of the X870 boards with USB4 only support piping the integrated video over USB4, rather than having a DisplayPort input.
This might be able to play Battlefield 1942 or other classic titles that are from the 1999-2004 era.

In another 5ish Years integrated graphics should be doing pretty good! When I got into PC gaming I was using an Athlon dual core @ 2.8Ghz (forgot the model), an x1650 Pro and I think 1-2GB of Memory. I somehow played all through Crysis and even played the crap out of multiplayer at 15-25 fps and still had a blast... I've never been so good at an mp game as I was at Crysis- I'd regularly have matches with 50-60 kills and 0-3 deaths and I've never gotten anywhere near that kind of k/d ratio ever since- I think probably because we ALL had sub-par systems and were all running at those sort of fps back then! Crysis was ahead of its time and still looks good- I'm actually replaying though it right now (the original, not the remaster- don't much like the remaster and they're missing the flying mission in it), but on a 5700xt so I'm getting about 90fps maxed out at 1440p :D
Should play Half Life 2 and Starcraft 2 just fine 😊 Probably Starcraft remastered, Command and conquer remastered as well... Those run fine on a gt430 lol

You can overclock the igpu to around 3.1ghz and get up to 40% more performance.

I remember getting better framerates in cs2 using the igpu on the r7 7800x3d, I'm guessing the extra cache is helping somewhat. Or maybe I just cranked fsr higher.
To be honest, very impressive for a GPU that's only benefits over the Nintendo Switch's GPU is the newer Architecture and higher bandwidth (and far better CPU paired with it)
FLOP wise it actually isn't that far off Swtich's GPU docked lol, and it has far less cache and is literally half the width of the Swtich's GPU.
Mind you a 7600 alone will beat Switch due to the better CPU and higher bandwidth. But Switch's GPU if paired with similar CPU and Bandwidth environment probably would overshoot it.
Where's those mendocino APU handheld PC from AYN or ayaneo? It's the same igpu as this i assume. If we can play CP2077 for 250$ that's still a decent choice for some. Because ultra performance FSR at 6" screen won't be that bad
I saw this and was gonna mention it looked like 3400g quality that grandma uses. My daughter is 2 and I'd put this in there to get her going if I wasnt already a maniac that put together a cheap aliexpress 6600M build.
I have a 12900kf and when I upgraded I used it for a Plex server but I quickly realized no video encoding then I upgraded to a i7 14700k. I will never buy a cpu without a igpu again.
Yeah, it's not worth the money to lose a useful backup graphics options, if you want to do some GPU troubleshooting, for example. And yup, the Intel encoding capabilities are pretty great!
Maybe GTA V at 60 FPS is possible with overclocking...

The CPU really does a huge difference because i have a 2060 but I got a shitty old cpu and I cant get 30 fps in cyberpunk when I should be getting way more.
I use my 7800x3d igpu to run a 4k 60hz tv an a second screen and it does the job really well.
My R9 7900 has the onboard and the intent was, use the onboard for a second monitor, leave the GPU for gaming, streaming, recording exclusively but Windows 10 didn't like it. Crashed a lot. Haven't tried it on Windows 11 yet.

i use the same setup, but im using an rdna2 gpu so its the same driver for both, probably helps out
@@NinjaWeedle Similar setup. Ryzen 9 7900, RX 7900XTX. So same driver. It crashed anyway. It wasn't a rare thing either. It was like clockwork.

I was testing rx460 2gb for fun, to see if it can run it and this area made in completly unplayable, no matter the settings.
Maybe someone can give you safe file, coz I do not have it now.
btw. rx460 / rx560 / gtx1050 are around 2x better than vega7 / gt1030 / rx550.
It'll work in a pinch, and it gives you options. The other thing is that as PCs have become more powerful, more games are easy to run even by a new 'potato'.

There is only so much to expect in all fairness.
The amount of silicone is limited on the chip to be shared with silicone of the cpu.
That being said it does what it needs to do and that is display a still pretty reasonable image and gaming capability.
But missing a physical gpu in your pc just looks sad…😢
So what's the current consensus on the benefits of disabling iGPU when running a dedicated GPU? I have a 7600x and it's running pretty hot even when undervolted in a mini-itx case with air cooling.

I always have a GPU but yet I still prefer for my CPU to have integrated graphics. Its a nice fallback in case your GPU breaks.
