How HOT Do Steel Pipes Get Under a 300 TON Hydraulic Press? (Thermal Camera Footage)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 жов 2024
- In this video, we test how hot steel pipes get when crushed under a 300-ton hydraulic press, using a thermal camera to capture the heat in real-time! The results are more interesting than we expected. You'll see the steel bend and heat up as we apply massive pressure, and how quickly the heat spreads and cools down. This experiment was inspired by your comments, so we hope you enjoy it!
We also share some exciting plans for the channel and talk about an idea for a potential Hydraulic Press Channel / Beyond the press vacation experience. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Please let me know what do you think about having some technical/dangerous press footage here? It would this whole channel more feasible since buying fire trucks and exploding shit with dynamite doesn't scale up to weekly videos :D Also if you are interested on BEYOND THE PRESS SUMMER MAYHEM 2025 FINLAND PRKL fill out my questionnaire about the idea forms.gle/n1TLACH2fbeGY5n48
If it happens you need to invite “The Slow-mo Guys”..
Would love to take a trip out there and do some of those wild things but our economy is not doing very well here in the states, so watching your channels is close and good enough for now! Well done to you two my friends. 👍✝️🇺🇲
I like the thermal camera idea. Also, the gathering , for those that can afford it, is a great idea!
I think the difference between 6k and 15k is not so much compared to 0k to 6k. Most people who can spare 6k can also spare 15k.... But most people will not be able to spare 6k even.
I think the average person can spare maybe 1-2k for a holiday, maybe 3k at a push. So at 6k it's already luxury, so you might as well make it as best you can, as even at 6k it will attract the same people as 15k I think, and they will probably want the best service no matter what they pay, so better to charge more and give it to them as the price increase from 6k to 15k will only deter a very small portion of people I would imagin, with the most already finding 6k too much and anyone who can easily afford 6k being close to indiferant, providing they get the extra value they pay for at 15k.
I personally like the technical videos here, keep these videos coming please.👍🏻
LOL I'm so used to watching both channels that I completely forgot there are two separate channels with the extra stuff feeling JUST as fun as the "main" channel. Well for me anyway.
Love all your content on your channels - whether it's dangerous, technical or both. The thermal camera is a good addition to the bunker.
The Great Return of Thermal Guys! :D
The thermal camera is a great idea! 👍
Hey Matt Carriker from Demo Ranch has just started doing festivals and gatherings. It’s been a success! If you have the accommodations I’m sure people would love to come!
I hope the summer mayhem works out.
The planning and logistics will be mayhem on its own. Seriously best of luck with it though!
Love that you are planning on loading more videos to beyond the press.
I even love the workshop videos of just manufacturing or completing projects.
Pretending your thermal camera channel didn't happen.
Yep that was bit nicer camera still! The videos are by the way still up :D Might revisit the concept now when we are bit more experienced
@@Beyondthepressthat would be cool!
My favorite vacation I could imagine is hanging out with you two and seeing Finland at the same time!
Here in the US, the primary thing we worry about is lawyers and insurance for something like that. Make sure your friends who work with stuff that goes boom can have visitors and still keep their insurance coverage, etc.
I wish I had the money to make the trip, I'm sure it'll be awesome. Have a lot of fun.
You can buy the P2 Pro Thermal Camera for about €225. Its USB C and plugs into your Android phone/tablet. If the thermal camera costs €50 per day to rent, €225 is 4 and a half days worth. You might as well buy your own.
The light umbrellas in the window behind you at the beginning make it look like the windows are broken lol
Been so long I had forgotten I was subscribed
We haven't published that much here lately since we have been too busy with other stuff. But I hired a new video editor so might be able to do more now
That's why Lauri said "welcome to the Hydraulic Press Channel" at the beginning LOL.
I love the fact that after 10-15years of the "Hydraulic Press Hype" you are still able/managed to do interesting content in 2024; short/concise & entertaining! Good job! 🙃😚😘
Summer Mayhem sounds like an incredible idea and I would love to go, but I know I could never afford it. Im sure plenty of people would be trhilled about it too.
It's about time! I've been asking you to show the temperature of the items being crushed for years.
Thats wild, I was just catching up on some Hydraulic press channel content and then this video drops! Glad to hear the vacation was fun and then Hydraulic press experience idea is pretty cool! way beyond my means but I hope you two and some one else lucky enough enjoy it!
I've been a casual viewer for years and didn't even know you had a bigger channel!
As much as I’d love to make that trip, my wallet won’t allow me to
Joo lisää lämpökameravideoita!
All the cool kids watch Beyond the Press
That thick pipe was awesome you could hear the built up air escaping a few times
Can't wait to hop on plane this evening for my first trip to Finland.
It’s pretty late here and my eyes are blurry but I think there’s going to be a pretty good fire truck video soon
Sounds a fantastic idea
I would love to see Finland one day. I was born and raised in the U.S. (65yrs ago) but my grandfather Toivo was Finish. I love watching your channel because of your accent and humor, it reminds me of him. Thanks for the great content 👍 😊
I trust you making your videos. I don’t think you you spend any more money than you want. Your content is good, your ideas are interesting, whether on 1 or 2 channels.
HOWDY FROM THE ADIRONDACKS ! 1:00am going to bed after this!♾️♥️✝️🇺🇸
UA-cam says that it doesn't really matter when you publish these :D I wanted to try out that
@@Beyondthepress if I didnt catch it now I would when I got up in about six hours. Always a priority, and I’m subbed to over a thousand channels.♾️♥️✝️🇺🇸 night night!
I love you 2 great minds
Agreed, great idea
good idea for the beyond the press weekend. but i personally have no money
Same with very small nozzles and various fluids plz. :)
I don't even watch the hydraulic press channel, i like the technical stuff, the videos about making stuff, or like that video working on a big hydraulic cylinder
Thermal camera is a great idea. Hope to see more of it.
It's great that you get a thermal camera. It's a great tool to see things you can't see otherwise :)
The Vacation idea would be fantastic if truly feasible! I would do it.
I think you need to try cooking some items using the heat generated from pressing an object… start easy by melting butter, then maybe cooking an egg… popcorn, boiling water… could be a cool experiment AND worthy of the UA-cam shorties.
You make the content and we will watch it continued blessings and thank you for sharing
love the technical stuff. Because of this video, I now see why steel rolling mills are constantly spraying water on the steel due to compression deformation heating.
Hello from Australia I like watching your videos, keep up the good work
holiday sounds like a great idea I'm in
Beyond-the-press-mania!
I don’t have the attention span of a squirrel, so I prefer the long form tech/physics videos. Keep it up 👍
wow, one of the most requested things I've seen in the comments over the years, awesome!
i really like the workshop part stuff like in this video. (dynamite and flame throwers do not spark my interest. perhaps i have gotten to old for that.)
You know the press is strong when it makes steel look like playdo
Summer Mayhem is a great idea, wish i was not broke.
Well, now that you've confirmed that it heats up, next move is to collaborate with a cooking channel to find a way to cook via hydraulic press. :p
fin-aly! i was asking this for the all crushes for years.
Would love to do the vacation program! Give cost options please.
5:50 Nice hiss.
I don't think you can get it onto a tray
Yes, more BTP content!
I have been waiting for this! I'm looking forward to the BTP videos 🎉
Thank you for being Fahrenheit friendly for those of us in the USA
I would love to join the Summer Mayhem, but 4000,- is already too much. I don't think I can afford that. Everything more is just too much for a holiday. I get that things like that cost money, and being a small UA-camr myself, it would be amazing to meet, but sadly that is not an option for me with this price. Maybe downsize it a bit more? Then I would be the first one to book it. :D Less expensive action, a bit more leisure time with the 2 of you and it should get cheaper? ^^
Pääkanavan seuraus loppui puolivuotta sitten, siisti kuulla että siellä on seuraaja määrä kasvanu. Mutta näitä on paljon mielenkiintoisempi katella, ehkä oppii jopa jottain. Kiitos paluusta.
The only way I could afford to come over there is if you had a year-long package that included me sweeping the floor, fixing cars, painting, etc. Just watching what you normally do is interesting -- crushing shit or not. Finland seems like an interesting place.
Personally I love your crazy ideas. Summer mayhem sounds awesome. I wish I could afford to participate 👍😎
Vacation in Finland, yess, do it :)
I wonder if it is possible to cook an egg with press heating
I honestly wouldn't mind scientific approach to what's about to happen, especially on your channel. I mean, a video of paper getting crushed was quite surprising, that they exploded with significant forces once the whole thing approached the limits. Hypothesis and tests do go hands in hands.
Thank you for trying the thermal camera! I would love to see true engineering stuff. Strain gauges, thermal images, computational analysis vs actual, etcetera. You could really provide a great verification video series that shows what computers predict will happen to materials and shapes under different loads and then evaluate these with real world tests. Of course, the computer analysis is all over the internet - probably collaborating with some of those channels would keep your costs low.
Tech, info videos FTW
Sadly the trip is above my paygrade, but if I could afford it I would definitely be on board!
You should really paint the steel black before you crush it. If you put another hot item nearby, you should see that the flat steel parts are very reflective in the thermal camera, and you can see the hot item reflected off them. So they probably got a lot hotter than you thought over a wide area, but the camera picked up reflections of the colder surroundings.
I'm imPRESSed
If you stretch a rubber-band, it will get quite hot!
Keep the band stretched for a minute, while it cools down to ambient.
Let the band contract back to its original length; it will cool down significantly.
Summer Mayhem is a good idea. Start simple to see how it goes and work out the kinks, because there will be kinks.
9:01 "Exploding shit" - Why not explode a massive pile of actual shit? That would hilarious!
I think it would be fun to use a water sprayer to get some cool sizzle sounds from all that heat.
Great video!
Super, great, more please. I have always wondered where in the deformation the majority of the heat comes from.
Fill the Metal Tube - box section with water, get free hot water for your Coffee Break.
Shorts are opposite of what I like. More of this for me.
Some of the things that you've done wouldn't be much more expensive to do with a bus load of people nearby than it was to film originally. For instance the day where you blow things up. If you are taking suggestions, I think you for SURE should do the thing where you put a can of watery stuff at the bottom of a large pot of oil and then bring the pot of oil to a boil. That made a fireball I want to see in person.
The ballons full of flamable gas may require too much set up time, or be boring to wait around while they fill with gas, but the flames were impressive I look forward to hearing what you get planned.. I wonder how many of your viewers can actually afford a 6000 euro vacation (assuming that doesn't include airfare). I know that would be expensive for me, and I'm actually in the "take another vacation" part of my life. (I recently retired.)
for thermal camera, I can recommend a InfiRay P2Pro (the one with USB-C). Towards a computer, it acts like a webcam. With OBS and LUT, you can record the same colored pictures directly in the computer.
The vacation program sounds like a great idea, i wont be able to participate unfortunately but i wouldn't doubt that others wouldn't want to, it sounds really fun! Hope it works out for you guys
P.s. love the thermal camera idea
If you still have the smashinator one it might be interesting if there is a change in temmperature when you crush it in 1 fast blow.
07:15 although the heat obviously concentrated around a few unpredictable stress zones, I was hoping you'd actually math this. 🤓
I'd love to go to that programme but my earnings are just not quite there right now.
Maybe one day in the future.
Maybe you should spraypaint the pipes in black, so that the metal surface is picked up more clearly in the IR
You have to paint the parts black to prevent reflection. Especially the shiny ones, that is very important.
Holy molly, over 100 C! What would happen if the pipes were wet, would the water turn to steam?
any content you make ill watch
This reminds me of the time where I was bored as a kid and started hammering on a penny. After a few whacks I was picking it up to inspect the change and it was warm.
Really a curious moment. But getting to +100 C with just crushing it is something I did not expect to happen here.
Really interesting!
Surprised how quickly that square tubing got a 100c hotspot, it was almost instantly.
It makes intuitive sense that the areas of highest deformation would be the hottest.
I’m only mildly surprised because it seems like in physics and thermodynamics things often don’t make sense, at least not intuitively, haha.
I would love to partake in mayhem but the cheapest would still be too expensive, I'm sure you would get actual takers.
Not even Dimond (the hardest substance known to man) could withstand that press.
He could do destructive diamond anvil cell experiments in that press...
Wrong! This press is the hardest substance known to man.
The Infiray series (like the P2 Pro) are very cheap in comparison and can do 30fps which is perfect for video. Definitely worth checking out!
i'm sure your 'resort' /vacation packages ideas would be a very good ideas for you and many people. That being said, i couldnt afford any of them. But if you find ways to have 'floating' packages, meaning with dates that can be easily moved/swaped around, flexible, AND the people that can also be as flexible, it would be great. That way you could wait for slots to fill up or something. I guess you could also just plan for smaller groups while also making sure the dates are far enough in the future so that there is time to book em all... Anyways, hope the geopolitical situation in your area is also favorable to that. Keep safe, thanks and take care!
I would love to see a Citroen Hydraulic suspension Sphere take a LOT of pressure
I think start smaller, evaluate, adjust, let social media do the advertisement, then expand.
do luxury travel/hotels and ghettorig the fun, diy, improvise, blow stuff up for the fun of it!
There's much cheaper thermal cameras these days. $1600 is insane.
Even InfiRay has ones directly ordered off Amazon.
So you went and fahrenheit 451 your engine, cool shit guys
There are Flir thermal cameras that you can connect as a webcam via USB C. Would lessen your investment at risk since you wouldn't need the camera gear filming the screen.
I bet if you point that thermal image camera at Hanna, she's glowing white!
What a nice decoration piece that thick pipe would have made if stopped at about half length.
I don't have budget for the mayhem you are planning but it sounds really fun
