How to Fix Leaking Quick-Connect Fittings

  • The majority of leaking quick-connect fitting leaks are caused by a damaged O-ring, improper installation, eroded tubing, or too much torque placed on the tubing. Quick-connect fittings have a simple but powerful design. If the fitting is leaking, it is very unlikely the leak has sprung because of a manufacturer defect or faulty product design. The majority of leaks arise because a component of the fitting has been damaged or the fitting has been installed in a manner that is allowing water to bypass the O-ring.

You don't know how much this saved me. I'm a captain on a private yacht and the water maker has these type of fittings and it wasn't working properly. Someone had closed the valve that sends fresh water to the tank. So the pressure made one of the hoses come out. Well. Little did I know that there was an o-ring that goes in there and that was nowhere to be found so I had spare o-rings and was on my way, making water and making the bus happy. Thank you.

When I first bought the "push fitting 1/4 inch" there was a leak, but once I watch your video, I removed the hose from the leaking end and recut it straight and insert the hose back in and the leak was gone. Best expert advice.🤟🤟

My water service man came every year some 12 times. Sometimes he had to stay longer to change leaky fittings.
He quit the business four years ago and now I have to service the R/O kitchen sink unit.
Today was SANI day with 2 new filters. All went well but now two connections leak just like in years past.
I noticed today there are locking rings that go with these fittings but he never used them.
I'll try these half dozen tips tomorrow however the fittings are really old. Thanks for the good video.

This was quite helpful. I think I know why the fittings I just use are leaking something fierce ... only pushed to first resistance, so probably did not push tubing in far enough. Thank you!

Just excellent! Thanks for the clear and informative video. Fixed my leaky connection in a heartbeat. The O-ring wasn't seated improperly and deformed. I used the pointed end of a chopstick to gently bring it back to an O shape. The tube then went right in - problem solved. Cooling mist system up and running just in time for the heat this weekend - thanks again!

I found this video useful since I was working on leaking fittings on a kenmore refrigerator water inlet valve. Turned out the internal o-rings were deformed from the strain of the lines being bent at 90 degrees. I replaced the o-rings and added two 90 degree elbows and good to go with no leaks, the manufacturer should have manufactured it the elbows in place to reduce the strain on the coneectors. Thank you for the informative video.

Excellent video, explanations, and information! I looked ALL OVER the manufacturers site, and could not find any basic information on proper installation methods and practices. I identified 2 major failings that are likely causing my leaks. (My system was professionally installed and still corners were cut . . . .. wow.) Thanks a LOT!

I installed an ion-exchange water filter (BWT) into my fridge supply, complete with a water volume meter and bleed shut-offs, and I swear that every single connection either leaked or sprayed water when I pressurized it. I was pretty panic stricken as I had snipped the fridge line so I was committed now. Anyways, it was just me not knowing to push the hoses right through the O-rings.
Phew!! You saved the day. 🙂

Thanks very much for your clear presentation! I do have this one question though: I have a water filter system that is around 7 years old. I replaced an air gap faucet and, following your suggestions, I made sure all the tubing cuts were, square, the tubing round ( not mis-shapen) and nick free, and the tubes are pushed in as far as they go. 2 connections have very slow leaks, even with new, carefully cut and inserted tubing. Both leaks are with old, original fittings. All the new fittings are fine. Is it possible that with age, the O rings start to fail and the fittings need to be replaced?

1/4” fittings always seem to leak. They are connected correctly but I sometimes need to replace them numerous times until I get one that doesn’t leak. It’s a hit and miss with these types of connectors.

Listen up to those that did all the steps in this video and it still leaks. Simply wrap a few layers of that thin plumbers tape around the end of each hose (or the leaking side). Voila, problem solved. If it still leaks wrap a few more layers until it fits water tight with the rubber gasket.

Also helps if you have fresh, good quality tubing. I recently replaced all of my R/O filter tubing because it had all become so brittle, it just snapped in half like spaghetti. Also, sometimes the fitting collet becomes sort of stiff and is hard to push in for proper tubing release. I had to replace some 15 year old ones that were brittle from many California summers.

I've read some comments in many places that these fittings should not be used inside a finished wall. I know they can leak, but so can standard fittings. I don't know why there's any more concern for these than any other fitting.

Purchased a faucet with a quick connect tube already assembled and it doesn’t fit the 8” spread, even though the instructions say it should. The tubes have a coil inside, and clamps on the ends. No idea how to cut them down to make them shorter. I may need to just purchase my own replacement tubing. Hopefully it’s a simple as you make it appear!

Would you say that any type of pex tubing straight from a faucet should be the same size and fit into an under sink water filter push fitting. Scared I might have to cut off the flares end and try. I could try to find the right fitting but I’ve never had any leak problems whatsoever from the previous blue hose the filter came with. The faucet is grey with lettering. Could Kettering itself even cause a leak

My leak was caused from moving the system around quite a few times while I'm in the process of installing a new sub-floor. When I'm ready to re-install it I'll get all the parts I need, in fact have spares should this happen again later. I think I'll put the whole filter system inside of a big 22 gallon plastic tote, and if I go on a vacation I'm going to turn off the water source valve.
