    Marlain - "Tha 'ne Erotas"
One of the most tragically undervalued songs in Eurovision history, Marlain Angelidou's intriguing Europop ballad "Tha'ne Erotas" immediately became popular when unleashed on the internet. Beginning with a gorgeous intro, the sound changes considerably with the first chorus, leading into a soaring, catchy dance-pop song. It's beyond belief how much the fan favourite bombed, only scraping up 2 points (both from the UK). While the performance maybe could've been tighter, this is a strong song (I prefer the English lyrics, though) that deserved much more than it got.

As someone from Cyprus, though I wasn't born at the time, we were gutted that Marlen only got 2 points. We were all confident we would be battling Iceland for the victory but they did not win either (which is a shame for Selma). There obviously were bad things that happened:
    1. The song itself. The lyrics are very pretty and so is the beginning part, and the rest of the melodies are great, but the pop part should've been rearranged, it sounds quite clunky. Maybe it would've been better to have the live orchestra kept, but too bad.
    2. Maybe she was just nervous because she normally sings very well, but the live performance was average and sometimes she was just screaming. But her vocals definitely weren't the worst of the year. The choreography was not very exciting and the backing singers were visibly messing them up. In fact, the national final performance sounded much better, but she doesn't move around a lot in stage. (it WAS held in a nightclub in the middle of Lemesos)
    3. We went in between Iceland and Sweden. Why?
    4. Maybe it was the switch to televote. Most of the time we only do well in televote if it's an ethnic song, or the style is popular. But EBU had very good reasons to remove juries, especially because of lots of cheating in the 90s.
    5. The English lyrics might have helped to get more votes, but I am happy we decided on Greek language that year. Plus, Croatia came 4th without English that year.
Even with these, I have no idea why she ended 22nd and not at least in the middle.
Our broadcaster stopped selecting songs that might do well, which explains how low we ended in 2000-2013, and now it's happening again since Andromachi failed to qualify.
But at least Marlen had a successful career in the group "Hi-5" in Greece and Cyprus and she also works as an actress :)

I remember all the internet forums raving about this song in '99, this was definitely winning, and I recall a lot of aggression towards those who disagreed. What exactly happened that it did so bad? Not singing in English probably didn't help, though neither did Croatia, and they did fine. The performance is a bit iffy, and the dance moves aren't good. Also, as a few have already stated, it was sandwiched between the hot favourites. So it does seem like a combination of factors, as opposed to just one.

@@Euroviking86 Seeing the 1999 recap for the first time, I hadn't known the whole song, and the part shown there made me perceive it as a depressing post-Disney ballad. Meanwhile, there's one moment in the whole song - the rave-ish bridge at 2:16 exactly - which itself is far stronger than the actual winner of that year... Speaking of Iceland, its recap piece sounded like Lazytown series, so it's not all obvious

Happy to have been one of the tele voters who contributed to her only two points from the UK (that was my 14 year old self at the time and I felt at least she was sending something different). Sadly the performance wasn't very good, and she was flat at parts in the song. The choreography was messy, the backings were off-putting especially the one that keeps smiling. I think it was nerves and the pressure got to her being a favourite. Also the draw had a huge part to play too. A shame as this is a good little dance pop song.
