Gib was my Great Uncle Charlie. His brother was Joe, my grandfather who became the caretaker for the property. My grandfather kept it all so well maintained. The University moved the things from the library to somewhere else. When I a child I walked all those areas and loved it. I did meet Stellanova a few times and she was a nice lady.

Thank you for sharing. I haven't seen it in many years. John Bozich on the comment is my husband my name is Kim. Gib/Charlie and Joes last name was Andrews. There are still people on the island who know the history. You should check out The Gander.

Yet another great video. To think that I was born in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago and have spent over 65 years of my life within 40 miles of Lake Michigan, yet have done so little exploration of our Great Lakes... [smh] 😔 Thank you for sharing. There's so much to see in the region and so few people sharing it on YT. For what it's worth,, I like your relaxed, informative presentation style, infused with a subtle sense of humor. Well done.

I worked for 41 years for UMBS and knew Joe and Josephine, Charlie, Ed and Sally and several other Andrews over the years They were all good people. I'm heading up next week to turn water off a the Gander. The UMBS still sends researcher to the Island several times over the summer. This summer was slowed by covid. Some of your information is flawed. The U of M didn't abandon this property, the buildings on Duck Island fell to arson and getting vandalized over the years. We transferred all his books and valuables out of the Library 20 plus years ago and most were donated to LSSU. The Gander and Summer house are still being kept up for researchers to use in the summer time. The caretakers house which was out on the main road was torn down several years ago due to structural damage. The UMBS still oversees/caretakes this very unique and interesting property.

Thanks for commenting! Especially. . . thanks for your perspective on the situation. For sure, many historic sites have succumbed to vandals and arson - it is a very sad reality. It looks like UMBS was no different.

They do! Not an easy accomplishment for a young person. It is great to see them step up and do what needs to be done.

My in-laws the Hills had a place
    on the island 50s -- 70s .
    Never locked the cabin and
left a bottle of whiskey for the
    Indian's .

Omg another place I never knew about. Awsome. Now I'm a little upset not buying a cabin up along lake in Michigan.
Hmmm, maybe I will buy a zodiac and toss it on back of trailer...not. I keep watching your videos instead. Thank you again for sharing a place in our great nation that is widely known about. Be safe out there

Accidentally found St. Helena on a trip home from the Keweenaw. At first, I thought it was a "fake" until I saw the historical marker at the rest stop. I remembered your video & got so excited.

My great aunt and uncle were caretakers and cooks when he was governor. I believe they lived in the small cabin for 2 years
