One of the biggest and best electronic bands/groups/artists of the twentieth century ever to exist in our generation. These two guys were there right from the beginning of the electronic generation and will forever to remain during our time, not only that, their influence will definitely remain for the further generation of generations of electronic music fans and there some. Thank you Orbital for every track you have ever produced.
I would slot *Underworld* into the same category of sorta' "unequivocal electronic music pioneers with several remarkable genre-defining tunes in their discog, long careers of consistent output, and dozens of sublime live performances." Some of the tracks off Underworld's 2019 "DRIFT" series are exquisite, among the career best (see 'Custard Speedtalk'). Chemical Brothers rank high as well. Though many people associate the Chems with early Big Beat and high velocity bangers (often with semi-prolific artist vocals), yes - album after album of live venue bangers that could simultaneously satisfy more mainstream audiences, the Chemical Bros. albums always featured several highly nuanced tracks (more "difficult" tunes, one might say) that put them squarely in the same league as Orbital, Underworld, and a handful of others. I'd say Aphex Twin is another obvious member of this higher tier category of inimitable originators.
Just found this band recently on UA-cam and figured it was pretty recent stuff. I am MIND BLOWN that this is from 1990! Way ahead of their time, or just pioneers! btw, "Pants" is underrated, check out that track if you haven't
80's and 90's music is immortal, just doesn't age, sounds as good today as it did then. Those where the best years of my life, Orbital being a part of many of them music-wise.
And on October 4th 1990, I discovered you guys thanks to a really obscure radio for "print disabled" station in Melbourne. The track was Omen. Being 15 at the time, to say it was a epiphany would be an understatement. It engendered a love of electronica that still continues strong nearly 30 years later. By the way, thank you for the awesome set you played in Christchurch NZ - Feb 2019. I only had to wait 28 years, 4 months and 3 weeks to see you live :) The wait was worth it.
Thanks for sharing, guys. A hearty 👍 to this early (earliest?) Orbital show at the cool Shamen-driven gig. The recording has a nice, warm quality to it. Of course part of that is the pure analog origins (the satisfyingly old school gear of an early, dedicated 90s electronic band's live performance + recording to ribbon straight off the deck), but besides the sweet classic hardware outputting the rich tones, it's also a testament to how you constructed the tunes/set itself. Loved the anecdote re: Meat Beat, whose shows I often caught in North America. He/They also had this splendidly thick analog warmth and unrepentant drum power for those masterful live shows throughout the 90s. I had a 16-year old musician - genius budding jazz pianist - listen to In Sides and Middle of Nowhere. This kid listens primarily to late 60s/70s/80s jazz greats and shows, but he's well aware of many genres and styles, including "EDM" - which is what he figured I was describing. When I said "Orbital is a bit like those Jazz greats you listen to, in terms of being masters and originators -- pioneers of their craft and a musical style nobody can mimic without it being obvious." He was legitimately in love with some tracks off both albums, and said, "You're right, they are masters. This is waaay better than any of the EDM stuff I heard growing up or out now. This is super intelligent. I can't believe this stuff was out before I was even born." I do believe I converted him, as I heard him whistling parts of Girl... and The Box some days later. *Too Long, Didn't Read* Some music and musicians are indeed - as they say - timeless. Destined to be rediscovered and embraced by later generations. Orbital successfully carved out a niche in this classification.
LIVING LEGENDS!!....played some Orbital on vinyl last weekend at an outdoor gathering in the wilderness.. ...people went loony !!...thank you Orbital...🇨🇦🏴☠️
For a moment I thought I was at this gig but I checked my ticket and it was 7th may 1990 shamen synergy all nighter town and country club. Never got to see the shamen that night as had to get last train home but I was lucky enough to see orbital which I have never forgot!
- short, but technologically interesting: time lag (30 years) the notion of time, instruments, and tempo in general ... Everything seemed different, simplified and yet nothing has changed: the sound quality of the whole remains timeless. - Just some time later went out the album Snivilization (referenced: intelligent techno) It is from there that everything started (the dream :) And since I could never unhook : )) Thank you 🍀Team Orbital 💚 : )
A much more recent fan here, but I completely agree. What I love about Orbital, when compared to other electronic acts of the time, is that their sound manages to refrain from feeling cold or too metallic. The brothers Hartnoll definitely keep their music warm and inviting, beckoning legions of ravers to the dancefloor for decades to come
Stoked that this set has material I've never heard before! Mostly a spotify listener so they don't have everything (specifically the earliest stuff). This video feels like the best step back in time ever
So, they were shit hot from the very start, basically. Paul + Phil, you are the thrilling soundtrack to some the best nights of my life, please keep going! Monsters Exist was great. Also, thank you for just being down to Earth diamond geezers.
Excellent stuff! The US version of the green album was the first electronic music CD I ever bought. Has edits of Satan and Chime that are very similar to what's in this set. Thousands of listens later over almost 30 years (ugh) and all of the tracks still sound amazing. Timeless electronica :-)
Loved this , an absolute treat .. killed it with the first live set no surprise. Even back in ‘90 Satan sounded as fat as that ! Freaky samples Dirty stabs fat break beats n cowbells , fire! 8:58 on clock yes Paul ..
This makes me so happy that I finally got to hear what I have always Ben wondering about. Thank you so much for all the work and effort put into your art that helps me so much and also helps the world in so many ways and I could go on and on but I'll just leave it at that. Insert laugh track and fun starting
I was at this gig, it was properly amazing - totally blew me away! Me and my school mates went to all of these Synergy nights at the town and country 2.
Went to Synergy at Brixton Academy in the 90's, Orbital headlined, Hippie Homeboy and a Funki Dredd, The Shamen and I think Back to the Planet played, possibly more bands and DJ's. It was a great night 🤪
Tremendous! Lovely to hear you talk about the Livingston gig. I was there and would *love* to hear it. I had just moved to Edinburgh for art college and it was a life changing gig. London records had sent me promos of the album and bits and bobs as I'd made a fan film of 'Belfast' (I was doing film). I never went to bed that night and had to pull a full day the next day. I was young enough and fit enough to take that! Halcyon days!
Beautiful. I’ve been a faithful fan since mid 90’s. Sound crisp as anything by the way. Thank you guys for blessing me with your incredible music most of my life!! Big love❤️
Fantastic. Satan was the first Orbital track I heard on a pirate radio station early 90s. I recorded it on cassette and kept playing it with my open bedroom window trying to get a reaction from my sunbathing dad in the back garden. I got zero from him, he was such a dick anyway.
Not surprised that there's no dislikes my fave dance band ever the brown album was my introduction and never looked back absolutely love lc1 and midnight
Got all excited then, only saw 2 words at first (Orbital & Live) ran downstairs with my phone to show my other half and ready to start making plans & what have you. :( I'm still buzzing for this though. Can't wait.
What a brilliant way to start off a set "Satan," especially being it your very first proper gig and similarily exposure to the world, and the rest is history!
for 1990 - insane sounds... that is pure magic - so good - a real treasure ... wow! Update 24h later: heard this gig once again, turning the volume to max. bass level. Absolutely amazing. So clear, so profound. I‘m in Orbit. :-) it just keeps pushing and pushing and pushing...getting better and better and better. 23:00 ----> ... wow
Saw you at the Livingston forum synergy all nighter , the shaken done two all nighters in a row , I went to both , wouldn’t fancy trying that niw I’m 50 tbh !!
P&P thanks so much for these treats, bringing back some wonderful, hazy memories, i wondered if you have any recordings of either the first Albert Hall show, or the Brixton Academy night where you played right in the centre on a scaffold tower? anyway thanks again!
Ciaran Oates This is a great find. I’ve not watched it all as yet but it was great to spot Mickey Mann on the sound desk. He later worked extensively with Orbital in the studio and also on tour. He would talk about his Shamen days and also his fond memories of Will. Thanks for finding and sharing.
Stuart Quinn I first saw them in 1994, can’t remember hearing Satan played before 1997. Must have have kept it back for us. Consistently the best live act I’ve ever seen, happy times :)

True that!!! I still listen to Orbital almost every day.

Having heard it in so many versions over the years, can't help but think the early mixes of Satan were dirty and much better.

Kicking off with “Satan” 🕺🏼🕺🏼
Saw their set at Somerset House years back. I swear they only played Satan to stop me shouting for it between tracks.....
I've only just found out that Satan didn't date from the mid nineties!
@@StuartQuinn I found this out just a few moments ago.
What a treat! Great to hear the history of this trailblazing, blissful music.
Was at Synergy a few times, unfortunately have no conscious memory of this. Maybe it's somewhere in there. Need my hard drive defragged or something.
Time to dig out my copies of Live At The Brain... from that same era. Orbital - Son of Chime, Ramjac... etc 🤓
