- My solo wild camping gear setup for 7 days that I had used for backpacking both the 'Cape Wrath Trail' and the 'West Highland Way'.
This film covers the basics of what I carried to be both safe and comfortable whilst out in the wild and remote sections of the Scottish Highlands.
During my backpacking trip of the Cape Wrath Trail the weather conditions and terrain tested a lot of my gear to the limit. Some of it may not be ultralight but was certainly lightweight and most importantly, comfortable to carry and use over multiple days of wild camping.

Failures below I forgot to mention in film:
Berghaus Paclite Gore-Tex Waterproof Trousers (Only lasted a day or so before letting water in.)
Tentmeal Breakfast meals (OK, but lacked a bit of flavour and could be a bit difficult to get down first thing in the morning.)

Very nice setup!! I've got the Ribzpack as well. It seems as if they're still being produced... at least the website is still up. It's a very nice pack to separate your camera gear from your other items. I've been looking for a frontpack like this for years. It really amazes me how nobody has ever come up with an idea like this up until now... though currently I'm just using my GoPro, until I have the rest of my pack dialed in properly.
Some good advice there. It s always a trade off between keeping the weight down, and not leaving out some critical piece of kit should the circumstances arise. I always find it useful to review the gear you carry after every trip. Thanks.

Really enjoyed this vid, love a good kit rundown from really experienced hikers/campers like yourself. One thing that stands out here for me is actually the editing, sound and shots in this vid. Really keeps it engaging. Tbh I know less about filming than I do about wildcamping but it's quality stuff as always Ray, there's real effort there in your vids - it always shows. ATB!

It is my go to setup and really enjoy it. However the filter can clog up after a while but so do most others. What I do like is the flow rate for drinking pouring water into pot. Atb

Great video! That propellor jacket looks the business! Glad the boots and the darn tough socks combo stopped blisters. I swear by darn tough socks, i think socks as important as the boots! It was tragically sad to hear about Jumper Home Ray. He was making a tent for me when I heard the news. I believe all orders will be eventually fulfilled by his family and friends, I hope so anyway. love kit vids, alot of same style of stuff i use, Im drifting back to more "sensible" kit rather than ultralight, like from trail shoes back to my Miendl boots, from the duomid to my hilleberg Unna, Im just getting too old for that lvl of discomfort, lol, but like you say, you have to find what works for you...cheers as always..ATB WJ

Thanks again for your vids,Ray. I have the same sleeping mat and in irder to prevent it from slipping on slanted ground, I have put some silicone (seam sealer) drops on the hill-tops of the mat, mimicking baby’s non-slide rubber socks. Having tried it yet, but I’m pretty sure it will work. So much so that I’ve done it on both sides so that I do not slide myself on the mat. I managed to get myself a properllor jacket after your first review. I agree it is amazing: with modt waterproofs you need to compromise either breathability or waterproofness. With this jacket, you have both. Paramo is also a good choice, much heavier. Thanks again. Take care.

Most of my camera gear is in my front pouches, such as GoPro, batteries, ND filter. Could actually get my old Sony A7iii with 16mm lens in one side. Atb
I love a good kit video and your cape wrath trail video was brilliant. Id love to see how you carry your main camera and tripod. I find using trekking poles difficult unless I pack my tripod away each time which isn't practical for me at least. All the best 👍
My secret is because I wear that front Ribz Pack with the pouches. It lets me attach my camera or GoPro to the tripod and then with the tripod legs closed I can put one leg of the tripod through the front waist belt of the orange pack at front. If I put it through at angle the camera rests on the left pouch and legs of tripod are short enough not to affect my walking and still have both hands free. This way I can stop walking pull out tripod, setup shot, film and then put it back again without having to remove rucksack, etc. Atb

Good to hear the boots worked. I’ve bought a pair and will probably use them on Dartmoor in October. I wish they made a pair of the mids in leather. I don’t use the top set of cleats, as they feel a bit constricting. Sad to hear about Jumper. As you say at the end, gear is a personal choice. I like to take a few more clothes, but that is offset by minimal camera gear. ATB.
It has always been a bit of a challenge with gear as trying to go lightweight, but be comfortable. It is always about trying to offset the camera gear as you say. If I wasn't vlogging I would have a very lightweight setup. Have fun on Dartmoor. Atb
Great video! I also have an Ether light xt insulated pad, Although it is comfy I find it very noisy and slippy, Preventing a good nights sleep.I have just got a Big Agnes insulated air core pad for half the price of the Ether light and in my opinion is far better! All the best, Adrian
Good to know as I had always wondered if the Agnes version was any good. Also as you say can be found at a cheaper price. Atb
I’ve got some of the zpacks water proof bottoms which I use for 3 season. Find them very water proof and super light weight. There’s no zips on them and it is a tight squeeze getting them on over shoes which is a negative but would recommend.
That was a reason I go the Berghaus trousers as hate hopping about on one foot trying to get trousers on and off, lol. Atb

Sad as he was doing some weird and different stuff. He would also test it in some very harsh and wild places as well, not something some manufacturers do as far as I can see at times. Also at pretty good price point. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors Ray, just to pick your brains if ok. I have just returned from 6 days on the trail but taking a loop using the Great Glen way up to the Glen behind Loch Quoich/Gleouraich down to Kinloch Horn and back to Ft W via Barisdale, Sourlies etc. The idea was to test out some new gear (fortunately the highlands threw everything at me in the 6 days). I took a Lightwave Sigma S22 as I hoped the greater living space would bode well for future Winter trips. I did suffer some condensation, I wondered if you managed to keep your MSR inner dry? On another note I had a lingering ankle injury so had to take full on mountain boots for support. I like the sound of the Salamons you used and will look to get a pair. My normal hiking boots (Keen Targhee) would not have had enough tread for some of the walk especially climbing and descending the steeper boggy terrain. As you will appreciate tho Mountain boots are no fun on tracks, fortunately there were few of them.
Nice setup, im sorry to hear about the tent man. You should try NorTent 4 seasons tents. They designing a free standing UL 4 season tent right now (called the Vern 1 / 2 or 3 person) should be on sale on spring. Keep an Eye on it. Its not going to look like the Pyramid tents though. We found out they are terrible on storms, so they need to be more aerodynamic.

Hello ive got the same sack but on using it lately for the dales way where i carried about 10.5 k found its straps dug in believe i got a size to small as if just day camping about 5k its ok got size m so id go up in size

Good stuff Ray, I'm surprised the Berghaus paclite trousers let you down. I've had mine for years and they still keep me dry.
So was I and never thought they would let me down. Just goes to show and maybe as I bought from Amazon, could copy versions be going about, who knows. Atb

I was just wondering, with the tent alone, your total weight from south to north must have been more than the first part of your trek from north to south? If so, did you feel a difference? from your videos you couldn't tell from the appearance.
Thanks Gavin. My kit was heavier on this one due to the camera gear. Last time on CWT I had just taken the GoPro. Also tent was about 1kg heavier so in all I think I had 3kg more. Didnt bother me too much to be honest.
Hello Ray. Great kit review. Love looking at people's gear 🤔. Camping gear lol. I just finished the WHW which we done as a 5 day challenge. The problem I had was my feet, just before the walk I took out my superfeet insoles and replaced them with the original insoles and forgot to change them back round. This resulted in my feet becoming very painful and sore. Never mind we still managed it in 5 days. What insoles do you use my friend. I also have a Rib pack in camo colour. Can't get them anymore. Hi Steve, Have used the supergreen carbons for a while and the green version. Both do help but as yous say even the bottom of my feet start to get sore. The carbon versions seem to work bit better for me as it has a fairy rigid arch. But really depends on your foot type. Guy on cape wrath I seen had ultralight trail running shoes and the bottom of his feet wear in agony. Next test is to try some HOKA ANACAPA boots I bought and see what they are like as the foam in them is crazy. Atb

Hi Ray, first off, I really enjoyed watching your Cape Wrath video great job on the cinematography. Secondly I was just wondering how you've found the Sterno + Ocelot HX kit up in Scotland? I'm in the market for a stove at the minute and it's between that setup or a Soto Windmaster most likely. I'm curious how you've found it does with wind and overall how happy you are with it. I was up in the Cairngorms two weeks ago, and while you create a windbreak with bag and body, you still get quite a few eddies and gusts to deal with.
Not had an issue with it and a great little lightweight setup. Really heavy wind can have a slight effect but as long as you turn up the gas it works fine. Going to be using it over winter as well.. Atb

As far I know those jackets are no available here in the states. They pop up once in awhile and sell quickly on used gear sites.
Sadly like gold dust to get and don't know why they stopped making them. But like a lot of outdoor fabrics I think it is down to the current situation in world and drop in manufacturing and supply. Hopefully they will appear again some time soon. Atb

Ray great video , ref the ME waterproof jacket , would you say they fit true to side or run a little small/big . i am thinking that they look like a slim fit so if i can find one i size up to allow for layers would this be accurate ?
Prob go up a size if you want to wear anything thick underneath. I just had my thermal top and had room but wouldn't get much more on under it. Atb

Yep got one a few weeks back too. Don’t do the different sizes like they used to nor the colours. Black, one size fits all now.
Another very fact packed, real world tested video. What permethrin (%) product do you use and how often do you treat your tent and stuff?
I use Lifesystems Ex4 spray. Will put on clothes after every second wash. Only put on key areas such as ankles and shin, Around waist and bum area (In case I sit down in ferns, etc) and at wrists. Mainly areas where ticks can crawl under and get to skin. Also with tent I put it on the bottom few inches of fabric to the inner tent and around door zip in case they crawl up bathtub to get in whilst inner tent door is open. Also on things such as rucksack to stop them attaching if I take it off and put it down for a rest. Put it on my gear once but if I know I am going to a really bad place for ticks maybe put a light coat on them few days before to ensure it drys well. Or if been in heavy rain for a lot of days, when I get home I will respray. Note that not sure if it will affect any fabrics but haven't had an issue myself but something to be aware of. Atb

interesting video Ray, how did you cope with river/stream crossing too deep for boots.
Only had on deepish crossing during this southern section of the CWT. This was after Sourlies Bothy at NM 87148 96354. Note I stayed to the right hand side of the mountain and found a very faint stalkers path and then crossed. Just walked over and was maybe 12" deep and just accepted the wet feet. Many go across the bog but I decided against it. However once you get to the north section there are a good few.
Nearest I can find to your jacket is a Ron Hill/Mountain Equipment version. This retails for about £230. Sound about the right price?
What’s your thoughts on the life of the shake dry jacket when wearing a rucksack?
Seems all good so far and not had any issues. But not really used it on a regualr basis with a rucksack so that thought could change. So far so good.
Do you have something to clean things at camp or just deal with smell/dirt on clothes ?
Not Really. Had wipes for personal hygiene which I bagged in rubbish to bring out. Did have a micro travel shower gel which I used at campsite. Did take a spare pair of underwear to alternate and let me wash out, dry a set. As for clothes in general when out on hike like that over just a few days, really not fussed if I pong a bit. But last day at hostel allowed me to freshen up before bus home. Atb
Hi again Ray. Question which I’m hoping you can help with. Have noticed you’re wearing the Abisko light trekking tights. I’m about to buy some but not sure which size. I know my waist (34) would normally be a L, but I have quite big thighs, and you look like you do also. Is it worth going up to XL? Hoping you’ll reply. Cheers.
The large should fit fine and legs in L are long anyway which I like as can go over top of boots.

Ray, I really wish ME would see this and reproduce the propellor or impellor, I’ve seen it once on magic-mountain and it was the wrong size. Gutted, anyway, looking forward to seeing your upcoming winter camps whether it be local in Clacks/ Ochils again or further afield this year.

There are similar jackets but would need to do a bit of a search. Do have a coffee link in description tab for video. Haze outdoors uses a Ron Hill version but its very expensive. Atb

It's nice to be able to afford UL gear when you need it.
